The President’s Report

In the fall President’s report I mentioned that we were hopeful that the coming winter would treat us better than the last one. That “wish” was certainly short-lived. It seems that the snowfall was less but the cold weather certainly did hang around for a long time. In checking our propane usage for the season compared to last year, it showed usage to be almost the same. So I suppose it was not really that bad just that it seemed to be cold forever.

Our roads were maintained in great fashion. We can always count on Gord Hoard to be out there on the roads ensuring that residents and emergency vehicles have no problems getting in or out. Our neighbouring townships also did a great job on their portion of the roads. The spring has certainly made a mess of the roads with many sections being “torn” up and needing repair. In due course I am sure Marmora will get to it. Other than a small section of North Steenburg Lake Road, there has not been any report of flooding in our area. Less snow and proper repairs carried out last spring seem to be a good solution.

As noted in the fall report Mike Stevens ran for municipal council and was elected. He is working hard on behalf of all Marmora and Lake residents. We recently passed him on Jennison Road and when we stopped and talked, he was coming back from a 7:30 a.m. business meeting in Marmora. This makes for a long day especially for Mike; his normal “work” day only starts at 9:00.

The ice went out a couple of weeks ago as noted in our email correspondence. There does not appear to be much debris in the lake as the water level never did get as high as last year. The south west wind did a number on a couple of docks at the end of Jennison road however, moved them about 20 feet from where they were anchored. To quote Bob Gilchrist, “first time in more than 20 years my dock has moved that much due to ice flow”.

We have a challenging year ahead of us - we need new people to get involved to ensure that our events are a success - and we need new events that will get more people involved. Please do not be shy. If you have an idea for a new event, let the executive know - [email protected]. We meet on a regular basis and your ideas will be discussed. The executive, according to our by-laws, is made up of a total of 13 people. At the present time you are represented by 10 people from both Dickey Lake and Lake of Islands, some permanent residents and some seasonal, so we have a pretty good cross-section on the executive. If you are interested in running for the executive at the next general meeting in August please let one of the executives know and we will put your name forward at the meeting.

Looking forward to another great summer in “paradise” - drive safe and stay healthy.

Best regards,

Bill Rothwell

The recommendation of both the health department and fire department is that you change the batteries in your smoke detector when the time changes (spring and fall). If you have not been at your

cottage yet this year, it would be a good idea to change the batteries when you first arrive.

Be safe - not sorry!

Are you back at the cottage for the first time

this year? Change the Batteries.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all who helped with their time, donations, and most of all by voting in the last municipal election. This is my first year on council and it has been a learning experience, but also very exciting. The yearly budget has taken up much of the time and the staff and our Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) have done a lot of work on it. We are facing an increase in our portion of the budget. The largest single increase is in our Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) cost for the coming years. The increase will be $84,500 this year alone and ending with an approximate increase of $253,000 over 3 years. Our overall tax increase will be $4.40 per $100,00 of your assessed value.

Our recycling costs are also going up due to low prices for scrap and a new up-to-date contract with the trucking company and the recycling plant. We had a very low cost contract in the past which has elapsed giving new pricing

which is much higher. This will be an ongoing increase for the next few years as the costs become phased in. For hazardous waste and electronic waste please go to quinterecycling.org website for special dates and places where these items can be disposed of. We are also able to go to the site in Belleville where you can drop off waste on a weekly basis. Paint and batteries are also now recyclable at the Belleville location.

We will have 2 special garbage days this year on Dickey lake; June 6 and October 3.

For most information regarding your municipality go to the website marmoraandlake.ca or call 1-613-472-2629. You can also email me directly at [email protected]

Thank you and have a great summer!Mike Stevens

Loon’s CaLL 6 spring 2015

I realize that not everyone will agree but I felt like I should say something about the decision to make The Loon’s Call available only in digital format. Now I’m a “young” somewhat hip lady and realize the world is online, but there’s something to be said for the feeling of holding something in your hand.

I am a writer by profession and have been around long enough to see the latest and greatest way to get your readers attention. I have been working on a book series for a number of years and this is what I hear from our clients; the greatest thing about getting a book is that it will be around forever. It’s something to put on your coffee table and pick up and put down as many times as you like. It’s something guests pick up and browse through, it’s a conversation piece and in today’s world of everything digital a book is something tangible, something “real” to touch and feel and believe me, that’s making a huge comeback.

So to take away my hard copy of The Loon’s Call really fights everything I am promoting and working on today. I assure you I may peruse the digital copy, but I will no longer pour over it again and again. My guests will no longer cozy up on my cottage couch and dive in either. No longer will they ask about the businesses that advertise inside and hint that they’d like to go check them out; because how will they know? I am well aware my digital copy will get lost along with all the other emails coming through on a daily basis. That’s the reality of it.

We are losing something big here and I am willing to do whatever it takes to revive the hard copy of the Loon’s Call. Do we need to pay a bit more for our annual fees? Do we need to organize a fundraiser? Bake sale? I’ll do it. Put me in charge. Our local businesses deserve that much. Kim

Letters to the Editor: “The news of the last Loon’s Call”

For those of you who have the same concerns as above, Bulletins Plus has offered a possible solution

I was sorry to hear we will not be receiving a paper copy of the Loon’s Call this spring. Everyone who comes to the cottage looks for the Loon’s Call on a rainy afternoon. A cup of tea and my local news is the best. I can check dates of upcoming events, find a tradesman or find a new interesting fact. I know with the new technology we all need to keep up, but some still like the feel of paper and are not all connected here at the lake. I have a few copies from years past and it’s always nice to look back and see what was.Sue

For those who do wish to have a printed copy, Shelagh Landsmann has offered to make copies available at a cost of $10 each, which includes mailing charges. Please send

your cheque to: Shelagh Landsmann, Bulletins Plus, 2395 South Bay Road, Douro-Dummer, ON K0L 2H0. Be sure to provide your complete mailing address.

We were opposed to an email only publication. I have used the paper publication numerous times to look up local services for us and others, but have not ever done it on the web site, even though Bob and I are quite computer/electronic savvy and friendly.Rita and Bob

The 2015 License-Free Family Fishing Week will run from July 4 to July 12. This is a great opportunity to introduce your friends and family to fishing and to remind people of the recreational and economic value of Ontario’s recreational fishing - as well as the importance of sustaining and enhancing it for future generations. Also a great chance for fishermen and women to spend some time on the water.

Family Fishing Week provides not only opportunities to fish, but also to learn about proper techniques, ethical angling and how to protect fish and their habitat.

Although a license is not required, all other fishing regulations are in force - including limits and sizes. For more information or to view new regulations, call the Natural Resources Information Centre at 1-800-667-1940, visit www.ontariofamilyfishing.com or www.mnr.gov.on.ca.

Please plan on joining the swimmers on this year for our annual Marathon Swim in aid of Quinte North Hastings Health Centre (our Bancroft Hospital). It is just a good swim across the Lake from the Walton’s cottage property. It’s always fun, and for a good cause – keeping our hospital up to date with the best medical equipment. We look forward to seeing you out this year.Diane Warden

We are fortunate to again have Gordon Hoard to keep our roads

in tip-top condition during the past winter season.

Thanks, Gordon, for making our travels to the cottage safer for

everyone.

Rules: No electronics, no Internet, no Google. Answers can be found around the cottage.

Setup: Cut up egg cartons and place one individual egg cup on top of the other, fill with chocolates and wrap with a rubber band. Hide as many chocolate filled egg cups as you have number of questions/clues. Create questions and clues, write them on strips of paper, cut, fold, and place them into 2 separate hats/bowl/containers.

Hunt: Have your hunters choose one trivia question from the hat. Once they can answer the question correctly, they can then draw one finder’s clue from the other hat and look for that egg. Once the egg is found the next person starts with a question. We also had a bonus basket for each hunter that successfully found their correct number of eggs. Fun was had by all.

Here is a sample of the types of questions and clues we did up this past Easter.

Questions:

1. What small town is host to Cornell University?

2. Where did the Hershey family start and grow their factory? The whole town is said to smell like chocolate

3. What is the first name of the man who started Hershey?

4. John Tory was the CEO of this company?

5. What type of bird is found hanging around outside on the deck post here at the cottage?

6. What state is famous for brewing Yuengling?....also the oldest brewery.

7. Name 6 types of wine?

Rhyming Clues:

1. Its here you might find a trace......of things that can clean your face.

2. While you may sit here to work, the view at this spot, is surely the perk.

3. Where Jessie sleeps....with her peeps, look in high places for these to keep.

4. It’s always a fight that can end with the Knight!

5. This spot may be considered a waste of your space, but do look closely if you want to see the trace.

6. A tisket, a tasket, there’s towels in the basket.

7. Sit and be still, or find a maker of Margaritaville

Too often people think of something they would like to do and hesitate to mention it - for many reasons. Would others think it was not a good idea? Would people make fun of you for suggesting it? Others may have thought of it but, like you, not mentioned it. Surprisingly, many people would like to “do something new” or have a “great idea for a lake community event”. Don’t be shy. Speak up.

It is without hesitation that we recommend Duncan Snowden and his Tall Pines Carpentry Co. We fi rst met him for a very small job which he was very willing to do. Many builders can “do a reno” but Duncan has the vision and expertise to bring your dream to reality! Anyone is welcome to see his handwork...is okay with us!

Have you ever helped someone out and come away with a great sense of self-satisfaction? That is the same feeling you get from volunteering.

Do you have a particular interest in a Shawano event? Are you interested in supporting your Shawano Ratepayers Inc. Association? Volunteering is a commitment of real time, real effort and real leadership to bring success and results to an organization.

Not only do you feel good about volunteering, you meet new people who feel the same way. Why not consider offering your time and expertise. Contact any of the SRI directors to see how you can help.

The horses raced from the hall to the Cenotaph and back on the main street. In the early 1900s the Fair moved to its present location. A grandstand was built prior to 1920, partly for the Fair and partly to seat fans of the champion Coe Hill baseball team. Before cars became numerous, a special train came from Trenton each year.

Many barns and buildings have been added to the grounds. In 1969 the CNR Station from Coe Hill was moved to the fair grounds and set up for display. Over the years many new things have been done to better the Fair. The grounds are also used for many community activities and are available to rent for private functions.

Loon’s CaLL 18 spring 2015Sandy’s Craft Corner: Braided RugsBraided Rugs

If you can braid hair you can make a rug, it’s very easy. I go to Fabricland when they have a “buy 1 metre and get 2 metres for free” sale. Authentic braided rugs are made of wool but my preferred fabric is polar fleece because it is soft, doesn’t fray and comes in a variety of colours both plain and printed. I have a strip of wood approx. 2 ½ inches wide that I use as a template to cut the strips. If the fabric is a lighter weight the strips should be wider, if heavier the strips should be narrower. I lay the fabric out on the table and mark the strips with chalk using the wood as a guide. I like to use 2 strips of a solid colour with a strip of printed fabric to give the braids some dimension and allow you to blend the colours in the finished rug. I have also learned to avoid light colours because they show the dirt too much. You will need 3 strips of fabric to make each braid.

When you braid you don’t want to have any raw/cut edges exposed so you fold the edges in towards the middle and then fold the strip in half. This way all the raw edges will be folded into the middle of the strip. They sell special braid clips to hold the braids in the folded position but I use metal hair clips from the dollar store. This way you can fold a long length of the fabric and not have to hold it in place while you braid. If you need to sew pieces together to continue braiding you should place the 2 pieces at 90 degree angles and sew diagonally from corner to corner. This way the seam will be on an angle and not create a lump in the braid and all the raw edges will be in the middle. Trim the seam to about ¼ inch. Sew the 3 strips together at the top of the braid, leaving about 1 inch for fringe at the edge of the rug.

When you make the first braid the length you need for a square or rectangular rug, count the number of “loops” in the braid; it is more important to have each strip the same number of “loops” than the same exact length. When you get the braid the length you want simply hand sew it straight across the bottom and cut it off about 1 inch longer so your rug has a fringe on the edge.

When you have a few braids completed you can start to sew them together. I use heavy duty upholstery thread and a bodkin, which is just like a needle but it isn’t sharp, it has a blunt end. You don’t want to pierce the fabric when you sew it together you just want to connect the loops. Pull the thread tight so the braids are snugly attached and there is no space between them. Continue this process until you have the width you want. You can use old clothes but it is a lot more work. You have to cut off all the seams, collars, pockets, etc. before you can use the material. You often end up with a lot of short pieces that have to be sewn together to be useable. The other problem with using clothes is that each fabric is a different weight or thickness which means you have to adjust the width of the strips to try to make them the same thickness for the finished braid or it makes sewing them together and having a flat, straight rug very difficult.

If you want to make a round rug sew it together after you have braided 2-3 feet, don’t make a huge long braid and then sew it together at the end as you won’t be able to tell where you want to change colours. When you’re sewing it together you have to skip a loop on the braid at regular intervals or your rug will not lay flat.

My, how times have changed: As a wife and mother (possibly a working mother) in today’s world, you may enjoy (or not) some of the following comments from “The Good Wife’s Guide, from Housekeeping Monthly; May 13, 1955.

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return.

Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives.

Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.

Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgement or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his fairness and truthfulness.

Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

At some point in the last 20 years you may have heard the sound of a trombone, French horn, sax, flute, guitars and drums reverberating around our Dickey Lake. Judy (on horn) and I (on trombone) are professional players who have to practice to keep our chops in shape for the hundreds of jazz and classical gigs we’ve played over the years. Our son Ewan is also a musician, playing trombone, guitar, bass, keyboards with many local Indie bands around Toronto including Donlands & Mortimer, Austra, Alvaays, and is currently on a two month tour throughout the U.S. and Europe with Moon King and Doldrums.

Our nephews Andrew and Jonathan Kay are also musicians who play sax, flute and other woodwinds, but the last 6 years of their lives they have been living mainly in Kolkata India studying Indian ragas with their great Guru (teacher) Shantanu Bhattacharyya. You may have noticed the wedding last summer at our cottage of Jonathan and Shayna Kay (she came down the aisle on a white horse!). We had 80 guests that day enjoying a wonderful ceremony featuring a special vocal raga concert by Shantanu who arrived from India that day. There was jazz, pop, and ethnic music all evening as well. A lovely celebration of their marriage and a beautiful setting overlooking the lake.

We have a cedar log cottage and the acoustics are quite good inside, high ceilings and thick wood. Ewan asked us if he could bring Moon King up to record their next CD there, so for a few weeks in December and January of 2013/14 they were here rehearsing and recording tunes, relaxing, having saunas, and having a very creative time. Everybody was happy with the raw tracks saved to their Mac laptops, so over the next few months back in Toronto they edited each tune, but sent it down to New York for final

mixing and mastering. The final product sounds great and the CD booklet features a nice winter pic of our cottage. You can follow the band and get a copy of their CD by checking out Moon King on Facebook, or Moon King (@danielmoonking) on Twitter.

Jon and Andrew went through Humber College music (where I teach) as jazz sax students, but fell in love with Indian music (we have two student Indian/Jazz fusion ensembles there). They started writing tunes based on ragas with a western groove that were inventive, virtuosic, and had lots of space for improvisation (similar to North American jazz tunes). Indian ragas take years to master, so they started taking Skype lessons of classical ragas with Shantanu. But for the last 6 years they have been living over in Kolkata at least 6 months a year, taking 6 to 8 hour lessons from Shantanu every day. They have also performed hundreds of concerts with their guru and the very best Indian musicians receiving rave reviews. In India they are known as the “Saxophone Brothers”!

Back here in Toronto two years ago they booked time at a great recording studio Canterbury Sound to put together their new CD Monsoon Mandala. Jeremy Darby their sound engineer won a Juno this year for “Best Sound” for this CD! With the bed tracks done Jon, Andrew and the rest of the band came up to our cottage for a few weeks (unfortunately during a heavy black fly/mosquito month!) to record all the overdubs, adding other instruments and percussion to each track.

Their CD front cover is a mandala of all the exotic instruments they used, photographed on our sauna deck by Andrew who climbed on top of the sauna to get the shot. The picture inside of the CD booklet is of course Dickey Lake looking south from our point. The CD release concert was at the CBC Glen Gould stage, a fantastic evening of music played at the very highest level.

Right now Jon, Shayna, and Andrew are back in India studying and performing, but they’ll be back here at the cottage this summer visiting for a while. To hear tracks, get a CD or follow the band go to www.monsoon-music.com or <www.monsoonmandala.com>. Al and Judy Kay

The Loon’s Call would love to hear from you

We are newbies to Dickey Lake; thrilled new owners of 544 Jennison Road with plans to retire there soon from London, Ontario. Following a late season purchase in the fall and closing just before Christmas, our time at Dickey Lake so far has been one of winter wonderland.

After having our family up for the Christmas and New Year’s break, my husband Tim and I came back for a cross-

country skiing holiday in February. Lots of snow and extremely cold made our mini vacation most enjoyable. One late night walk on Jennison during a full moon it was so cold our breath froze in the air. But the dark silhouettes of the naked trees reflected on crisp, clean snow by awesome shining moonlight were a welcome break from the daily grind back in London, Ontario.

Our ski explorations took us down the snowmobile trails for several kilometers where all was peaceful and quiet. Another day we ventured out around the bay and into the Lake, until we tried to go to Lake of Islands and met with slush under the snow which immediately froze to the bottom of our skis and stopped us dead in our tracks. With such cold weather, who would have expected slush beneath the snow!

We met several of our neighbours and we so thrilled by the welcome we’ve received so far.

We are looking forward to warmer weather and a new vision of our new home – “The Big Chill”.

If you accidentally call 911, police say the wrong thing to do is hang up the phone. Police say that when someone accidentally calls the emergency response line and hangs up, an operator has to tie up a line to confirm if there is an emergency and is required to dispatch a police officer. Please respect 9-1-1.

It can’t be stressed enough that 9-1-1 is for emergency use only. The OPP receive many calls daily with either no one on the line or non-emergency questions. It’s hard to believe they actually received the following calls:* Call requesting the phone number of “Publishers Clearing

House in Markham;* Call asking how long a traffic jam would last as the caller

needed to use a washroom;* Call to report a problem with a water pump;* Call to report a missing TV remote.

Although it seems almost too humorous to be true, these calls were actually made.

The Ontario Provincial Police responded to 472 false calls from our area last year. The OPP must respond to every 911 call. False calls include hang-up calls, dialing error calls, prank calls, pocket calls (phone being dialed while in your pocket) and small children playing with a cell phone. The responses to false calls cost the area about $76,000. The OPP budget has jumped from $81,500 to about $236,300 in three years. Help avoid false calls and therefore reduce our policing budget commitment.

Wednesday, April 22 a large black bear was seen in the middle of Jennison Road near the sharp turn at # 106. The bear bounded eastward through the bush, but as we all know, black bear travel to forage for food.

We need to be extra vigilant when preparing and placing garbage for Monday morning pick-up. Also, any re-cycling waste, bird feeders and BBQs are prime targets for hungry bear. Note: bear picture at left is not actual bear seen.

Please remember that bears are not pets. Do not attempt to coax a bear to your property.

(NC)—Nothing says summer like a pair of fashionable, lightweight flips flops, but experts say we should think carefully when we reach for our summer footwear.

“We strongly recommend balancing style and ease with comfort and support,” says Ryan Robinson, a Canadian Certified Pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. “If you are at the pool or sitting in the back yard, flip flops may be an appropriate choice. But if you are walking any distance, a pair of flimsy, ill-fitting footwear can cause a lot of harm.”

Basic flip flops, he says, lack support and often fit badly, which can lead to strains and pains in the feet, ankles, knees, hips and back. Unlike walking shoes, which are designed to meet the requirements of the foot and lower limbs, most flip flops do not provide the support, motion control and cushioning required by the foot during walking.

For the committed, however, not all flip flops are created equal. Unlike the bargain-basement brand, some footwear companies design them with the health of your feet in mind. To minimize injury, flip flop lovers should look for ones with supportive footbeds, adjustable straps, thicker soles and deep heel cups to provide the foot with much needed support and protection.

Although these more supportive styles should never be substituted for walking shoes when a long walk or rough terrain is involved, they are a suitable choice for short walks and may reduce the risk of injury compared to regular varieties.More information can be found at www.pedorthic.ca .

Sidebar: How To Select Flip Flops That Won’t Hurt Your Feet

Canadian Certified Pedorthists suggest the following:

• Don’t be tempted to grin and bear it even if the flip flops appeal to your sense of style. Start by looking at the base of each one and make sure they match the shape and length of your feet. If your feet are too wide or your heel or toes hang over the edge, they are not right for you.

• Look for flips flops that have a thicker sole and a slight difference in height between the heel and ball of the foot. More protection under the heel provides better shock absorption.

• Choose ones with a footbed that has an arch contour for support and a deep heel cup to reduce the risk of turning your ankle.

• Adjustable straps are essential. As flip flops are usually made out of material that softens or stretches over time, adjustable straps will make sure your feet remain anchored in the correct spot even as they age.

• If last year’s flip flops are misshapen or no longer hold your foot securely, remember: If in doubt, throw them out.

Are Flip-Flops a Flop for Feet?

Potential Public Wolf Howls (Algonquin Park)August 6 to September 3, 2015 Aug. 6, 13, 20, 27 and Sept. 3, 8:00 – 11:00 pm – Outdoor Theatre

Join us for a famous Algonquin Park Public Wolf Howl. After a talk on wolf ecology, participants receive special instructions, and then travel by car (on rare occasions, walk) to a place where wild wolves may answer the imitations given by the naturalist staff. This event is held only if weather and accessible wolves permit. The final decision to hold a Public Wolf Howl is determined the morning of the event based upon the weather and scouting by the naturalist staff on the previous days. Check www.algonquinpark.on.ca on the day of a potential Wolf Howl for confirmation. If you are in the Park the day of a potential howl, check Park bulletin boards for confirmation. If you are coming to a Public Wolf Howl, arrive early, ensure you

have a Park permit, make sure your car is filled with gas, and dress warmly for this special program, which lasts three hours. No dogs are allowed at the presentation or howl location as they can disturb the experience for 2,000+ participants. If a Wolf Howl is not held, the following evening program will be held instead – The Wolves of Algonquin - Join a Park Naturalist to learn about the intimate world of wolves and how humans have helped shape their destiny here in Algonquin and everywhere else. Potential Public Wolf Howls take place only on Thursdays in August, or Thursdays in September before Labour Day, when weather and accessible wolves permit. Thanks to Gordon Hoard for sending us this picture of

“Molly” the Moose, taken in 1995 at Lake of Islands.

Many thanks to Donna and David Brady for providing our cover photo.

This photo was taken on Easter Sunday from our front veranda. I had just filled the bird feeder. There were Common Grackles, Jays, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Hairy Woodpeckers, Downey Woodpeckers, and red and black squirrels. And, Wow!! a Pileated Woodpecker flew in to check out what was going on.

Unfortunately, there was no suet in the feeder the big red head landed on. Big Red hung around several minutes and moved on. We were thrilled with the visit.Donna and David Brady

You forgot my lifejacket? Is lunch ready? Thanks to Marie O’Neill for sharing these photos.

Take the time to look around you as you’re out and about this summer. There are so many

wonderful things in nature to see. These two photos (beaver dam above) and turtles (below) were taken along the Anstruther Lake Road on May 1st this year. Shelagh Landsmann photos

Trillium erectum, also known as wake-robin, red trillium, purple trillium, Beth root or stinking Benjamin, is a species of flowering plant native to the east and north-east of North America. It is a Spring ephemeral, an herbaceous perennial whose life-cycle is synchronized with that of the deciduous forests where it lives.

This plant grows to about 40 cm (16 in) in height with a spread of 30 cm (12 in), and can tolerate extreme cold in winter, surviving temperatures down to −35 °C (−31 °F). Like all trilliums, its parts are in groups of three, with 3-petalled flowers above whorls of pointed triple leaves. The leaves

contain calcium oxalate crystals and crystal raphide, and should not be consumed by humans. The flowers are a deep red colour, though there is a white form. The flowers have the smell of rotting meat, as they are pollinated by flies. The plant takes its name “wake-robin” by analogy with the Robin, which has a red breast heralding spring and has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden. (June Wells photos)
