and international supporters ofthe Hospital, not least of whichwas a local school in Nazareth, which started the fundraisingcampaign in the most inspiringway by the students approachingresidents of one of the poorestareas of Nazareth and securing10 ILS each from 1,000 residentsin order to be able to present acheque to our Hospital of 10,000ILS. This truly has been a projectrooted in the community for thecommunity.

Other inspirational news includesthe completion of our firstindependently-run sponsoredevent - ‘The Jesus Trail’ walk -which raised funds for theChaplaincy Service.

Read more of this event, which sodeeply blessed participants andrecipients alike, on page 04.And for testimonies of how ourwork continues to touch the livesof those we serve and those whocome to serve, see pages 13(School of Nursing), 06 (Seedsof Hope) and 07 (SERVE).

Another major development forus this year so far has been theextension of our work andmission out into the West Bank. After five years of development, planning and negotiation,we started serving the peopleof the West Bank from ourHospital in January of this year.Read more on page 09.

This edition is, however, tingedwith a sense of sadness, as weinclude the obituaries of DrCooney Maddock, Dr FredHolmes and Moira Baikie. All had been faithful and long-standing supporters of theHospital in word, deed and with

their own resources. Though theywill be missed, we know they havebeen received into His Kingdomas good and faithful servants.Their lives set a standard ofhumble Christian service thatmost of us will be unable to meet.

We hope our work continues tobless and encourage you. Please, continue to support uswith your prayers and gifts as weseek to serve, heal and teach inthe name of Jesus.

Our intrepid fundraisers camefrom all over the world includingthe USA, Switzerland, Ireland,Scotland and England toparticipate in the first Jesus TrailWalk organised by The Trust.

The journey began in earnest ,starting at the Mount ofBeatitudes with a walk down intoCapernaum. Everyone could seethe land was in need of rain andour prayers were answered thatfirst afternoon as we arrived atthe ruins of Magdala.

We all knew how much the localpopulation needed water for theirfamilies and crops but little didwe know those first welcomeraindrops would set the scene forthe entire week, with soggyclothes, heavy clay and muddyboots – but but joyful hearts.

Ronit, our wonderful guide for theweek, was taken aback by the factwe wanted to complete the trail inreverse creating a morechallenging climb.

Ronit was so well-informed,each day was a revelation as shepointed out places of interestwe know so well from the Bible, adding a new depth to our Biblicalunderstanding.

One of the highlights was toreceive hospitality from theowner of an olive press nearZippori, who was Jewish and hadgiven birth to her two children atour Hospital, demonstrating theinclusive ethos and reach of ourwork in the region.

04HEALING IN THE NAME OF JESUS SINCE 1861

OHHAPPYDAY...IT IS AN EXTRAORDINARYTHING TO IMAGINEWALKING THE SAME PATHAS JESUS, AND YET 12 OFUS GOT THE CHANCE TODO JUST THAT, NOT ONLYMETAPHORICALLY ANDSPIRITUALLY BUT ALSOPHYSICALLY, AS WERETRACED HIS JOURNEYBETWEEN CAPERNAUMAND NAZARETH.

OUR ITINERARY MEANTwE DID THE ROUTE INREVERSE – ACTUALLYJOURNEYING BACK TOwHERE IT ALL BEGAN -TO THE STILL BEATINGHEART OF CHRISTIANITY.

That was strangely fitting for theNazareth Trust, although we didmake the actual 55 mile walk somuch harder for ourselves bychoosing the uphill route.

Heart-felt thanks go out to all theparticipants who walked with uson The Jesus Trail earlier this yearto raise muchneeded funds forthe ongoing work of theChaplaincy Service. To date ourwalk has raised a fantastic£18,000.

The five day trek saw the walkerscomplete, on average, 11 miles aday, climbing 1,500ft anddescending 1,400 feet – almostthe equivalent going up and downBen Nevis twice.

So did you feel, upon the lake, that ‘Sabbath rest by Galilee; The calm of hills above?’Did you see the beauty of thebirds and of the golden sun,Sinking to its evening restbeyond the Magdala shore;the promise of His love?

And was He there along theway; those steep and stonytracks? Did He kneel upon thatsilent hill? And was it here Heprayed and taught and healedAnd did his Father’s will?

And as you walked along thatpath, down throughtheripening fields, Did you hearthe swish of cloaks against thebarley stalks, As those twelvefollowed closely in His stepsOn all their many walks?

And did you marvel at thewondrous flowers: The yellowmustard; the cyclamen so fair,

And, brightest of them all, those red anemones; the‘lilies of the field,’

That even Solomon, in gloriousrobes, could never quitecompare?

Did you feel the thirst fromheat of day, And, like thoseother twelve so long ago,Have you drunk the livingwater that once He promisedthem? Is that a promise thatyou know?

And did the Servant King oncewash twelve pairs of dirty feetClean of that orange mud ordust? And could we do thesame, Or give the task tosomeone else and lookelsewhere for fame?

And did you see a boy oncepressing grapes upon thatterraced hill? Did the blood-redwine pour from his feet, downupon that rock, As bloodwould one day flow fromwounds upon that cruel cross?

And would you grasp the gift oflife he gave, or simply standand mock?

And did you feel the sharpnessof the thorns upon that bush; The thorns that pieced Hishead and caused the blood toflow; A sacrifice for you andme? Is that a gift you know?

And now, this journey at itsend, you walk life’s further way,And climb the steep andrugged path to anotherpromised land, Will you goalone,

Or let Him lead you by Hisnail-pierced, loving hand?

Thanks to Dr Anthony Knightfrom Buckinghamshire inEngland who wrote a poemabout his experience.

As the week went by, Ronit beganto understand the importance forus of the precious moment weended the journey in Nazareth –allowing us to celebrate with allthe people that we were raisingmoney to support.

The walkers were able to givetheir testimony in a Service ofThanksgiving held in theHospital’s Chapel at which welearn ed that there was acommon theme for all the walkersof the deep bond and friendshipto be found in the sharedexperience of God’s presence andwhile walking in Jesus’ steps.

THEY COME TO GIVEAND SERVE, HOwEVERMANY QUICKLY LEARNTO ExPECT THEUNExPECTED ASENGLISH METHODISTMINISTER THE REVDAVID SMITH RECENTLYDISCOVERED.

For three months ourChaplaincy team had thesupport of David, whoserves in the LiverpoolNorth Central Circuit …it was very soon afterarriving in Nazareth thatDavid realised his timewith us would not panout as planned.

We asked David to answer a fewquestions about his time with us:

What did you do during yourthree months in Nazareth?

“I joined the chaplaincyvolunteers as they conductedtheir daily ward visits to offersupport, prayer and fellowship.”

Was it as you expected.

“No, I thought my purpose inNazareth was to meet clergy fromdifferent denominations to seefor myself how the Christianleaders in the place where Jesusgrew up, where it all began, worked seamlessly in harmony?”

I take it didn’t quite work outlike that?

“Well, that was my plan but Godhad a different one and I foundmyself drawn to work alongsidethe Rev Suheil Bathish, theHospital Chaplain, and theChaplaincy volunteers where I feltthe love of Jesus beingmagnified.”

So do you think that was theimpact of Christians workingtogether?

“By working alongside Suheil andthe Chaplaincy volunteers Iexperienced the impact ofChristians not only working inharmony but also somethingeven more moving - how thatworking in harmony resulted inthe love of Jesus being magnified- and that same love reflected topeople of all faiths as well asthose of none.”

What will you take from yourtime there?

“I have many stories to share butone that will forever be in mymemory was when a Muslimwoman, whose husband lay in acoma, stopped me one dayasking for a prayer. I had got toknow her well and could see thestress of her husband’s illnesstaking its toll. She herself wasadmitted to hospital and I foundmyself in a volatile environmentwith the family one side of thebed, the doctors on the other.

As I prayed from the foot of herbed, a sense of calm and peacefell over the group.

Later that week this same ladyasked for Communion to beshared by the family in intensivecare, an experience I will neverforget.

Sadly her husband died but it wasan hour to pray with her and herfamily.”

So it was a worthwhileexperience that you think othersmight gain from?

“My time at the Nazareth Hospitalwill stay with me forever. It was anopportunity to share God’s lovewith the patients and Nazarethcommunity and I feel blessed bythe moments of quiet reflectionand prayer with the staff andmanagement team during theirbusy days.

I feel privileged to have beengiven this opportunity to workalongside Suheil to experience hisfellowship and I thank God forguiding me to a place where Hislove is so apparent.

We are all sowers, sowing theseeds of hope and this was a timeand place I really felt the power ofthat.”

Laura, a SERVE Nazareth volunteerfrom North Carolina, in the US, hasdocumented her six-month stay onher blog ‘Here to Nazareth’ givingpeople an insight into what they canexpect from their time with us.

Funny and thought provoking,Laura’s blog helps people understandthe work SERVE volunteers do forour Hospital, Chaplaincy Service,School of Nursing and at theNazareth Village.

Her blog covers diverse topicsincluding; praying in anotherlanguage, multicultural nativity sets,Thanksgiving at McDonald’s andwhat her day-to-day life as avolunteer.

She’s not too keen on blood – a bit ofa draw-back when working in ahospital – but her blog explains howshe’s overcome that – spendingmany an hour on the dialysis ward.

One of Laura’s most touchingcomments is in her chapter called‘God in the dialysis ward’.‘

She says: “In the dialysis ward, withthe blood pumping throughmachines and sleeping patients, I’veseen a bit of God and his purpose forour world.

“As a Christian, I cannot fix all that iswrong in the world. Pain, suffering, and death will always be around. Butwe can show God’s love in thosesituations, whatever and whereverthey may be.”

“Many people come to Nazareth aspart of their pilgrimage to the ‘HolyLand’. They come to see the massive

Basilica and the ruins of first-centuryNazareth under it. The church isbeautiful and most of the ‘holy sights’are worth seeing, but that doesn’tsum up my experience in Nazareth.”

“Yes, God is surely present in thebeautiful church buildings with thelight streaming through the stained-glass windows. Yet God also shinesout of the eyes of the little old lady inthe dialysis ward when she listens toher solar-powered Audi- Bible.“His love glimmers when we stumblethrough transliterated songs inArabic for the patients.

I’ve seen God the most in the dialysisward in Nazareth, even though youcan’t see the basilica.

Laura was clearly moved by her timewith us, and we are moved when sheexplains what she is thankful for inNazareth.

“I’ve gotten to know so many people, and they all care about me. Inaddition to the other volunteers,I’ve made friends with people at thehospital, Nazareth Village andChurch. I’m halfway around the world, but I’m in no way alone.

“I’m thankful for the time I’ve beengiven to learn Arabic, and the brainGod gave me to learn and use it.Arabic is really hard. But I can usuallymake myself understood, and I cantalk to people who don’t speakEnglish.

“God made a really amazing andbeautiful world. Nazareth looksnothing like North Carolina, but it’sstill beautiful with the palm trees andthe flowers that bloom in November. The hills are more aptly described assteep mountains and have their ownrugged sort of beauty,” she said.

If you or someone you know who isthinking about volunteering pointthen have a look at Laura’s blog.

The rates of infant mortality are high and we have now extended our work toprovide mobile check-ups for children of the Bedouin communities. We havealso arranged with the relevant authorities the issuing of border permits tochildren needing surgery or significant medical attention in our Hospital.

We have already started to formstrong bonds with some of thesecommunities and have identifiedthe need for access to householdmedicines, first aid kits and basicpersonal hygiene items.

We are calling these ‘Medi-boxes’and hope to be issuing one toevery Bedouin family we comeinto contact with.

We will also be undertaking aregular cycle to replenish theMediboxes and will use thoseopportunities to bring communityhealthcare advice and educationto the families involved.

We will be launching a fundraisingappeal later in the year to supportwith this effort, so watch thisspace.

Please pray for us as we buildcarefully and thoughtfully onthese first steps – that the workstarted more than 150 years agoand which reached out todisparate communities even then– will grow and serve abundantlyin 2014 and beyond – in His namefrom His home town.

NEW HIGH-TECHCARDIACUNIT WILLHELP FIGHTHEARTDISEASEBUILDING WORK ISNOW COMPLETE ONTHE NEW STATE-OF-THEART HEART UNITFOR THE HOSPITAL –AND AN OFFICIALOPENING ISPLANNED FORSEPTEMBER.

MORE THAN 5.7 MILLIONILS (£977.6K) wAS RAISEDTOwARDS THE CARDIACCATHETERISATION UNITBY THE HEART TO HEARTAPPEAL, wHICH INVOLVEDHOSPITAL STAFF,INTERNATIONAL DONORS,THE NAzARETHCOMMUNITY, FORMERPATIENTS AND THEISRAELI GOVERNMENT.

Cardiac catheterisation is a wayto find out detailed informationabout the heart and coronaryarteries, and the new unit willmake a huge difference to thelocal community and surroundingareas.

Dr Bisharat, Head of Hospitalsaid: “The hospital prides itselfon working alongside the Ministryof Health and the local healthorganisations - sick funds - totackle specific health issues ofthe local and Arab community.

“Heart disease is one of theleading causes of death amongthe Arab- Israeli population, alongside cancer, stroke anddiabetes. Risk factors forcardiovascular disease, such asobesity, diabetes and physicalinactivity, are prevalent.

“Our plan isto run educationprogrammes onhealthy living tohelp preventheart disease, not just treat it.”During the catheterisationprocedure, an ultra-thick flexibletube is gently and painlesslypushed along a blood vesselunder local anaesthetic towardsthe heart. Its progress ismonitored by an X-ray machine.

Catheterisation can be used formany purposes. These includedetecting narrowing of thecoronary arteries, measuring thepressure in the heart chambers,or even inserting a tiny balloonthat can help widen narrowedheart valves.

It’s particularly useful in assessingthe condition of children andbabies with certain kinds ofcongenital heart disease – theyare usually kept asleep with ageneral anaesthetic during theprocedure.

Catheterisation, which usuallyonly takes 30 minutes, provides afairly non-invasive way and rapidto diagnose and treat conditionsthat otherwise might requiresurgery.

The new unit – which has beenbuilt at a total cost of 8.5 millionILS (£1,46m) - will open doors forthe hospital to establish theextent of the issue in the area.

Because it is such an accurateprocess, It will also assist medicalstaff in identifying patients earlyon in the progression of any heartdisease or illness, hopefullybefore they require majorintervention.

Dr Bisharat said the opening ofthe catheterisation unit wouldmark a new chapter in tacklingthe serious health concerns of anentire population – and hepraised everyone who has putsuch an effort into raising fundsto make it happen.

“Thank you to those who havesupported us and the Heart toHeart appeal, our patients saythank you – you have really madea difference.”

THE ONGOING SUPPORT wERECEIVE FROM OUR FRIENDS,GROUPS, TEAMS ANDORGANISATIONS AROUND THEwORLD IS INVALUABLE TO THEwORK wE DO IN NAzARETH.

It is the efforts of our internationalnetwork, such as Friends of Nazarethin Australia, which allow thecommunity in Nazareth to flourishand prosper.

Friends of Nazareth in Australiaarrange a work-party every other yearto serve as volunteers at the NazarethHospital and other projects in theGalilee.

These trips were led by Dr Paul Kitchenand his wife, the Rev Merrill Kitchen, who both worked in the hospital from1973-75. The volunteers served bycompleting specific maintenanceprojects on our campus for a period of10-12 days at a time and enjoyed a

month long experience which involvedtravel, work and learning.

Merrill has continued to support theNazareth Trust since Paul died in 2011and recently held a barbeque at herMelbourne home for Dr’s Bob andNancy Martin – themselves formerleaders of our Hospital and School ofNursing and who have supported ourwork for most of their lives. Both, Boband Nancy Martin maintain their linkswith the Nazareth Project Incorporated( NPI) which is based in Pennsylvania,USA.

NPI is also an organisation dedicatedto supporting the work we do inNazareth.

The dinner provided an opportunity toenjoy one another’s company andreminisce about the times they had allworked together at the NazarethHospital during the 1970s, 80sand 90s.

It also allowed Merrill the chance toshowcase an article she had publishedin the Australian Journal of Mission

Studies: ‘Women missionaries inNazareth - From the 1st through to the21st centuries’. Merrill said: “Nancywas delighted to see her namementioned!”

Sadly another topic on the agenda wasthe withdrawal by the Australiangovernment of tax deductibilityallowance for donations toorganisations supporting non-thirdworld countries, such as Israel.

But of course that won’t stop Merrillfrom ensuring the Trust gets the bestresults it can from donations. She said:“As a result we’ll no longer beforwarding donations throughChurches of Christ Overseas Aid(COCOA) but encouraging donors toconnect directly with The NazarethTrust.”

His father was in and out of his lifeand had run up huge debts. At theage of 12 as the eldest sibling, RRhad to work to put food on the tablefor his mother, brothers and sistersand to ensure bills and debts werepaid. He took any work he could findincluding working in a restaurant andat a blacksmiths.

With so much responsibility to bearhe turned to drugs for relief, as somany young people do. Howeverafter realising he’d hit rock bottomRR somehow found the strength tofight back and decided to changehis life.

He applied to the School of Nursingand despite failing at his firstattempts persevered until he passedand was accepted as a student.

RR told us what a difference beingpart of the School of Nursing hadmade to him and his very proudfamily.

“Before being accepted into theSchool of Nursing my life was amess. Here at the school I started toget to know the teachers.

“I noticed the warm environment andthe relationships between me andthe teachers. I started thinkingdifferently and took this newcommunication style back home.

“I started relating to people aroundme, especially my classmates, in thesame caring way that teacherstreated me. It gave me hope thatthings could change throughout mylife, it was like a candle lighting theway for me.

“My brother wasn’t doing well atschool but I noticed that he was goodat cooking, so I worked hard and paidhis tuition fees to take a cookerycourse. In turn he started workingand studying for more courses in

cooking. He also started helping thefamily and me – leaving me moretime to concentrate on my study andpass exams.

“I am having the best years of my lifeat the school. I am learning a newstyle of living - built on goodcommunication, care andforgiveness. I like all the teachers andthink of my class coordinator as asecond mother.

“Now so many possibilities areopening for me to work - the Schoolof Nursing has really changed mylife and the lives of my family, and Ihope to do likewise in the future.”

The students are a testimony toAmal Khazin, Director of the School, and her team – their compassion, understanding and kindness makesa lasting impression on all of theyoung people they work with.

So if you ever get the chance to visitthe school you’ll find a place where afeeling of ‘love’ is apparent in everyclassroom, every office and throughthe actions of every teacher.

Education is a gift we are grateful for– along with the chance to helpshape and form these youngpeople’s life skills and values forthe future.

14 HEALING IN THE NAME OF JESUS SINCE 1861

ALTHOUGH FRED LEFTNAZARETH IN 1978 WITH HISFAMILY, HE NEVER LOST HISLOVE OR INTEREST IN THEHOSPITAL, HIS ARABCOLLEAGUES AND HISFRIENDS IN THE WIDERNAZARETH COMMUNITY.Having made an impression as a medicalstudent in Nazareth in 1961, Fred wasinvited back to the hospital in 1964 to jointhe surgical team as a junior doctor. Hemade a worthwhile contribution to thesurgical workload as well as being lovedand accepted by the people he had goneto serve.

The hospital did not want to let him go.So after further study in the UK, gaining aqualification in obstetrics and gynaecologyas well as completing his surgical training,Fred returned to Nazareth in 1969 with hiswife, Judith.

Their arrival brought joy, and there wasfurther rejoicing in October 1969 whenElizabeth was born - now it was the Holmesfamily in Nazareth.

Fred was a great colleague to work with, not only because he was medically able ina number of different fields, but alsobecause he was able to instil confidence ineveryone and was always kind and jovial inthe work place. These are muchneededqualities, especially when working in thetensions of the operating theatre.

Fred also actively fulfilled the other aspectof the hospital mission statement -‘To Preach the Gospel’ - by speaking in thehospital chapel, taking ward prayers andbeing much involved in the local Brethrenchurch as a loved and faithful member.

In fact, on his last visit to Nazareth in 2012,Fred spent a day visiting a Brethren churchin one of the local villages teaching andencouraging - a life of service to the end.

Fred will always be a part of Nazareth. Hehas joined the ‘Great Cloud of Witnesses’that encourages us to keep on ‘running therace’ – and he is finally witness to havingfinished that race. We thank God for Fred’slife, so faithfully lived.

MOIRA, WHO SADLY DIEDIN JANUARY, WILL BE FONDLYREMEMBERED BY EVERYONEFOR HER HELPFULNESS ANDHER DEEP INTEREST IN OURHISTORY.Moira worked as secretary to Dr JohnTester for ten years in the head office ofthe EMMS in Edinburgh. She was familiarwith the work of the organisation from hersister Runa (Mackay) who began workingas a doctor in our hospital in the 1950s.

This family link led to Moira having aparticular interest in the history of theEMMS, and she helped Dr Tester to writeregular articles about it in the HealingHand magazine.

Moira was always ready to search thearchives for visitors who came to theoffice to enquire about particularmissionaries or mission fields, or aboutdoctors who had been EMMS students.

It is largely due to her care for thehistory that so many of the archiveshave survived and are available forresearchers today.

Sadly, Moira never visited the hospital inspite of much encouragement. She knewall the staff by name and said she wasafraid they might not like her if theyactually met!!

Runa says it is a personal joy to her toremember her sister as part of the historyof EMMS and the Nazareth Hospital

MOIRA TRAIN BAIKLIE -4TH APRIL 1923 – 3RD JANUARY 2014

IN JANUARY THIS YEAR WEWERE SADDENED TO HEAROF THE PASSING OF DRCOONEY MADDOCK. COONEYWAS A MAJOR SUPPORTEROF THE NAZARETH TRUSTAND THE HOSPITAL ANDDEDICATED OVER 10 YEARSOF HIS LIFE ACTIVELYWORKING IN NAZARETH.Dr John Tester invited Cooney to join themedical team at our Hospital and hestarted there in 1959 with Margaret andhis one-year-old son, Simon, and stayeduntil 1970.

According to his family these were hisdefining years. Alongside the local staff,he joined three expat doctors John Tester,Hans Bernath and Runa Mackay, who,

together with Cooney, covered thebasic domains of hospital medicine.During these years, Cooney was one ofseveral doctors, nurses and techniciansfrom the world over, who were drawn toserve; among them Bob and NancyMartin, Bevan and Elmer Woodhead, FredHolmes, Janet Baker, Philippe Hugonet, and the Fischer family from Switzerland.

Together, they sought to bring the bestmedical service to a predominantlyPalestinian Arab population it was aservice of Christian love to Christians,Moslems and Jews alike.

This vision corresponded closely toCooney’s sense of vocation. He learnt tospeak, read and write Arabic. KamalAbdou, the hospital’s chief laboratorytechnician, recently recalled Cooney’sencouragement to him and other Arabhospital staff to meet together for Bible

study and prayer. He rememberedCooney persuading him to assumeleadership responsibilities atChristchurch, Nazareth’s ArabEpiscopalian Church.

In his professional capacity, Cooney’sresearch was published in medicaljournals and his findings informed thehospital’s clinical practice. Indeed, theholistic nature of this shared vision –one to which Cooney so happilysubscribed - has come to fruition intoday’s Arab-led Nazareth Hospital, aforward-thinking centre of excellencewith an enviable medical record.

Following his time at the Hospital, Cooneycontinued to be a big supporter of theHospital and EMMS from which came theNazareth Trust. If he could find a way tohelp support fundraising and the profileof the work The Trust did he would.
