The political measures set for theglobal climate will affect the cons-truction industry over the next fewyears. The main aim is to reduce theamount of greenhouse gases by 40 % before the year 2020. In thesecircumstances the demand for ener-gy efficiency standards, for theestablishment and renewal of buil-dings, increases further.

Improved energy efficiency leads toan airtight building shell.The higher efficiency requirements be-come apparent in the European andnational legislation. Already the intro-duction of the Energy Saving Regulati-on (EnEV) 2009 as well as the renewa-ble Energy HeatAct (EEWärmeG)brought a clear aggravation of thestructural standard. Currently anamendment is planned with the EnEVin 2012/2013, which represents a furt-her step towards the attainment of thelegally required “Zero-Energy-House”in new and old buildings. Usually theincreasing energetic requirements arerealised by optimal insulating measuresat the building shell – with the conse-quence that this becomes increasinglyairtight.

DIN 1946-6 requires the proof of aventilation concept.Due to the tight building shell the EnEVrequires the guarantee of “the mini-mum air renewal necessary for thepurpose of health”. Hence, for eachnew building or renovation project aventilation concept is to be provided inaccordance with DIN 1946-6. This isnot least in reaction to the frequentlyinsufficient ventilation of flats, the ex-pensive structural damages accompa-nying this and the health-related bur-dens. If the proof of a ventilation con-cept has failed, high costs and law-suits are unavoidable in the event ofdamage.

Controlled, mechanical ventilation isessential.Ventilation concepts for moisture pro-tection and minimum air exchanges inthermal insulated buildings can be ful-filled only by controlled, mechanicalventilation. Opened windows wouldnegate the desired heating cost savingfrom the energetic point of view. Theproportion of ventilation heating lossesthrough opened windows increases toover 50 % of the total heating loss of aenergy efficient building.

That’s the way it works. Stale air with humidity, toxins andsmells are extracted from the kitchen,bathroom and toilets via design valvesto the heat exchanger in the ventilationunit. The outside air, which takes upthe heat energy of the extract air witha tested efficiency of up to 90 %, flowsthrough this and is hermetically sepa-rated at the same time. This processcan be optimised by connecting anearth heat exchanger.The air then flows through supply airvalves or air inlets into the living roomsand bedrooms and creates a healthyand comfortable climate around theclock. Ideal room climate providesa healthy environmentIn living quarters the relativeroom humidity should lie bet-ween 30 – 60%. With too lowhumidity mucous membranes,dry dust and electrostatic char-ges increase.These effects become appa-rent, in the cold season, if theoutside air has a high saturati-on level so that when warming,the relative air humidity decrea-ses inside the room. For exam-ple: With -5° outside tempera-ture and 21° inside the roomthe humidity of originally 100%drops to less than 17%.

In this range it becomes un-comfortable.

Ventilation units with enthalpyheat exchanger recover, in ad-dition to the heat, up to 65%of humidity from the extract air.This is used to warm the outsi-de air, which flows into theliving and reception rooms witha comfortable, healthy moistu-re content.

Operating mode of enthalpyheat exchangerThe water molecules of the ex-tracted room air condense on con-tact with surfaces of the enthalpyheat exchanger. They move thewater in a similar way to plants,through the membrane.At the membrane surface of thesupply airside the water moleculesare absorbed by dry outside air. Asalt-crystalline layer on the mem-brane of the enthalpy heat ex-

changer guarantees hygiene andefficiency with the humidity trans-mission process. It ensures thewater retains its molecular configu-ration to enter the supply air flow.Extract and supply air flows arehermetically separated from eachother, so that an overall transfer oforganic particles or odours is ex-cluded.
