La alegría, una de las principales emociones del ser humano, atravie-sa la Biblia desde el Génesis hasta el Apocalipsis. Nuestro objetivo es hacer un recorrido por los textos del Antiguo Testamento para ilumi-nar los siguientes aspectos de dicha emoción: Dios y la alegría; Israel y la alegría; la experiencia de la salvación; la alegría de la celebración; la alegría escatológica y las alegrías de la vida, entre otras.

El tema central de la predicación y del ministerio de Jesús, y por lo tanto del evangelio, es la proclamación e inaugura-ción del Reino de Dios. Desde una perspectiva teológica y pastoral, este taller repasará lo que Jesús entendió por el Reino de Dios y su aplicación tanto en lo personal como en la comunidad creyente de la-tinos y latinas de los Estados Unidos. Para ayudarnos en esta tarea, repasaremos la enseñanza del Concilio Vaticano II sobre cómo leer los signos de los tiempos.

Father Anthony Ciorra is the assistant vice president for mission at Sacred Heart University, Bridgeport, Conn., holds a Master of Arts in Psychological Counseling and a Master of Divinity from Seton Hall, a Master of Arts in Spirituality from St. Bonaventure University, a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Archdiocese of New York and a Ph.D. in Theology from Fordham University. Before joining Sacred Heart University, he served as director of the

Center for Spirituality for the Archdiocese of New York, professor of Theology and director of the Center of Theological and Spiritual Development at the College of St. Elizabeth and dean of the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University. He is the author of Everyday mysticism and moral Formation in the Parish. In 1999, he received the Pro Ecclesiae et Pontifice Award from Pope John Paul II. Suffering and pain are a part of every human life. This presentation will delve into the wisdom tradi-

tions of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures to reflect on the role of suffering as a call to growth on the spiritual journey.

The joy that comes from a deep relationship with God is one that does not depend on external circumstances but rather an internal strength that comes from God alone. The way we embrace sufferings in our personal lives is the greatest witness we can give to the joy of the Gospel.

Hearing Voices: Translating the Foreign Voices of ScriptureDr. PhiliP towNer american Bible society

A scholar has asked, “How does newness enter culture?” His answer is that it is by allowing the for-

eign voices to speak something strange, different, into our familiarity, to disturb our assumptions and habits. And one means of this en-trance of the new is translation, a cultural activity that contributes to the shaping of social and personal identity. Anyone who has tried to translate a text – biblical or otherwise – recalls the unsettling feeling of facing something foreign, other, irreducible to the language of transla-tion. Admittedly, most of us quickly set that feeling of otherness aside and get to the task of translating. And in the case of Bible translation, the sentiment that “this is our/the church’s Bible” induces an atmo-sphere of familiarity that closes the eyes and ears to things in the bibli-cal texts that are authentically “other” and “different.” But what if the Bible were translated in such a way that the biblical voices were allowed to speak their “difference” fluently into our lives? This presentation will explore some biblical texts that have perhaps been rendered overly fa-miliar by translation, and alternative ways of translating that listen to and honor their foreignness, opening a door to something new.

This passage from Pope Francis’ recent Apostolic Exhortation, Evan-gelii Gaudium underscores the importance of Sacred Scripture in the lives of believers. This workshop will first examine some of the ways the church has successfully implemented the directives meant to open the riches of the Sacred Scriptures set by Vatican II. It will then suggest ways of building on the progress made in the past fifty years in order to address the needs of the today’s world.

Seeking the Kingdom: The Sermon on the Mount and Moral imagination Dr. Pheme PerkiNs Boston College

This workshop treats the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7) as an exercising in shaping our moral

imagination. Jesus presents his contemporaries with a new vision of holiness and justice in the Kingdom of God. Jesus acts out his inau-gural vision in the gospel story. This risen Lord sends his disciples to announce this gospel to the world (Matt 28:16-20). We will discuss how the challenge Jesus presented to his contemporaries can inform our proclamation of the gospel today, reflecting on Pope Francis’ ex-hortation Evangelii gaudium.

La evangelización ha de partir necesariamente del kerigma: el primer anuncio, el mensaje del Reino de

Dios, la Buena Noticia de Jesús, su muerte redentora, su resurrección y su Palabra. Este mensaje ha de estar centrado en la Palabra de Dios: la acogida del sublime tesoro de la Palabra revelada, la comunicación en grupos de lectura bíblica, su estudio, la oración a partir de ella, su proclamación en los nuevos Areópagos, el testimonio de vidas trans-formadas, entre otros temas.
