Jim Wallis is president and founder of Sojourners, and editor-in-chief of Sojourners magazine—with a combined readership of more than a quarter million people. He is a New York Times best-selling author and frequent speaker in the U.S. and abroad. Wallis has had columns appear in the

New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Boston Globe. He frequently appears on radio and television as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC, FOX—on shows such as Meet the Press, Hardball, the Daily Show, the O’Reilly Factor—and on National Public Radio. In 1979, Time magazine named Wallis one of the “50 Faces for America’s Future.” Wallis has also served as spiritual advisor to President Barack Obama.

Founded  by  Jim  Wallis,  Sojourners’  mission  is  “to

articulate  the  biblical  call  to  social  justice,  to  inspire

hope  and  build  a  movement  to  transform

individuals,  communities,  the  church,  and  the  world.”

the title of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s final book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?

We believe the answer is community and we’re bringing Jim Wallis to speak on our campus because we believe he is the best person to help us explore the implications of division and challenge us to live into it. Please make it a priority to come hear him on January 30, 2017, in our sanctuary.

Together let’s be a community that says, “We will!”

When I look ahead for Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church, I can’t but wonder about the foundations that are being laid for God’s mission to the Santa Clara Valley. I see evidence of our growing unity as a congrega-tion as we all worship in the Sanctuary. I see our staff and church leaders collaborating on vision and programs. I see new energy for mission emerging. Our youth and children’s programs are thriving ministries. God has

blessed us and will continue to lead us into a future we cannot even begin to imagine.

But one thing I can imagine—a church that boldly follows Jesus into a world that needs transforma-tion. We are Christ’s hands and feet, Christ’s voice and presence, and Christ’s ambassadors of mercy and grace.

Happy New Year!

Many of us find ourselves longing for the new oppor-tunities that the new year boasts. Will the Warriors take the title this year? Other questions include the timing of things. When will our new Senior Pastor come? And perhaps the deepest longing is for the world to be set right. Are we moving toward a more just society and what will God require of us to facilitate this change?

Immediately on the horizon is our upcoming discussion on justice and racism facilitated by world-renowned church leader, Jim Wallis, of Sojourners. This will be a challenging conversation for all of us as we come to terms with how all us judge people based on culture, skin color, and economic status. Will our response be marked by cou-rageous honesty and resolve as we trust the Spirit to show us new ways of being God’s light in the world?

Reflections from Fall Frenzy (Senior High Retreat Weekend)Jennifer Britton, Youth Advisor and Welcome and Hospitality Elder

Fall Frenzy this year expanded my body, mind and spirit in a very short time. My body was reminded of how useful it is to care for it in case, well, you take a “leap of faith” from a platform 30 feet in the air over to a trapeze bar. Talk about a way to get a spiritual concept embodied, but it was true, I was “caught” and I was safe the whole time.

My mind expanded as I learned that the weekend’s theme “#NoFilter” was not only already a “thing” out there in cyber world, but the full extent of its meaning was brought home to me by the four-part skit by the Mt. Hermon staff and of course the students themselves.

After I learned its literal meaning and applications, then it was time for the spiritual application. Now that I learned that filters

are ways to modify, change, enhance or tweak things, I was able to see that in fact I do have some of my very own filters (I kept confusing them with masks) and that as much as I strive for a transparent life, I still have plenty of room for growth to live into—the character-istics that Paul writes in the Ephesians 4 verses that we were digesting all weekend: to put off your old self and to put on the new self and to be kind and compassionate to one another.

It was a sacred honor to witness the youth in our church at Fall Frenzy as they wrestled with the notion of dropping filters and picking up the more challenging path of living a life with Jesus amidst the culture that is embedded in filters. What I know from this witnessing is there is definitive hope that these students and many who attend there each fall will be the ambassadors of this kind of no-filter life. A more full, no-filtered life is my latest and greatest leap of faith.

Presbyterian Early Learning Center (PELC) NewsGrace Randle, Executive Director

Last fall PELC students had numerous experiences of giving. When the Rotating Shelter guests were on campus different classes provided decorated lunch bags, baggies filled with trail mix, brownies and muffins. PELC teachers provided gift cards to Starbucks and homemade muffins. Our children not only participated, but watched their teachers participate as well.

Then our children collected 285 boxes of cereal for Sunnyvale Community Services. Ms. Debbie filled her car twice because there were so many boxes! The children were quite excited to provide cereal for so many families. In addition to collecting cereal our children prepared baggies of utensils to accompany meals that are handed out to those in need.

We have had outstanding examples of sharing and it was a joy to see our children participating so happily!
