From the Pastor’s Desk
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him will have eternal life.” John 3:16
Many of us have these words from John 3:16 memorized. Sometimes we may forget just how transformational these words are in those who believe them. God has loved the world, His entire creation from the very moment He created all things. What is transformational for us about these words is that they along with all of God’s Word have changed the trajectory of our lives forever. God’s love for us is transforming.
An article was brought to my attention about the power of God’s transformative love for us in Jesus Christ which follows:
Love transforms…Do you know the Tim Tebow story (most die-hard football fans do). Back in 2009, Tebow played in the NCAA National Football Championship game as the quarterback for the Florida Gators and wore “John 3:16” in the black eye paint under his eyes. The Gators beat Oklahoma 24-14 that day to win the championship, and during the game, an incredible 94 million people googled “John 3:16.” When asked about the impact of that statistic, Tebow said, “How do 94 million people not know John 3:16?” Three years later, Tebow and the Denver Broncos had just defeated Pittsburgh in the NFL playoffs when he was stopped by his PR director as he was heading to his post-game press conference. The PR director said, “Tim, it’s exactly three years later from the day that you wore John 3:16 under your eyes.” Tebow responded, “Oh, that’s really cool.” His PR man went on to say, “No, I don’t think you realize what happened. During the game you threw for 316 yards, your yards per completion were 31.6, your yards per rush were 3.16, the ratings for the night were 31.6 and the time of possession was 31.06 and during the game another 91 million people googled John 3:16.”
(Article by Cole Braun, CEO of WeTeachTruth magazine, 2019-20 Winter edition, p.2)
Love transforms. Our powerful and almighty God can use something as small as a Bible verse listed on eye paint on a popular Christian football player to put His powerful saving word in reach of 185 million people. Tebow shared this passage from God’s Word because it gets right to the point. He also wanted to share God’s transforming love with others.
All of us who believe know and believe in the transforming love of God we have in Jesus Christ. Because of His great love for us, God sent His only Son Jesus into this world to go to the cross to suffer and die to take away our sins. There is no greater love than this—that a man would lay down His life for His friends. And that is what Jesus is to all of us-friend.
We who have come to faith in Jesus Christ have been transformed to live no longer as unbelievers lost in our sin, but as servants, as disciples who seek to follow Jesus command to “Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Tim found a way to reach millions of people in just a couple of football games. Love can change us too to do the work with the gift and tools that God has provided us to his glory. We too can simply share a word with our family, our neighbors and friends through a special invite to Zion for a concert, a Bible study or for worship. We now have been blessed with three worship styles that have provided blessings to those who participate. So go ahead and invite a friend to come and worship with you.
As we attend the special mid-week and passion services this season, may God’s Word and Spirit continue to transform us by God’s transforming love to share His this same love with others.
Your friend and brother in Christ,
Pastor Curtis

Belong Class
Want to Become a Member?
If you have not been a member of the Lutheran Church and would like to know more about what Lutherans believe about the Bible, then you will want to come to this class. Come to this class which is open to everyone in the congregation. There are no set times or dates for this class. When and where the class meets depends on those who attend the class. Those who would like to become members and have attended all the sessions of this class may choose to confirm the Lutheran faith as their own and become a communicant member of Zion. The next new member and adult confirmation Sunday will be held on March 10. Contact Pastor Curtis to include you on the Belong Class email list for dates and times.
Lenten Worship Series
CONVICTED
Have you ever had to serve jury duty? We are giving every member, friends and family the opportunity to serve on a special jury during the season of Lent. Every member of the congregation has now received official notice that you, your family and friends are to serve jury duty every Wednesday night during the Lenten season. Convicted is a series that enables the congregation to step into a courtroom for Ash Wednesday, February 26 and the following five weeks of Lent to hear cases of those who have been put on trial in connection with Jesus death, accused of an actual crime. An overall guiding question leads the arguments of each case while the congregation serves as the jury. There is a very interesting twist for the jurors at each trial. Come and experience Lent in a new way that will leave you thinking about the passion of Jesus from a new perspective.
DO YOU HAVE MUSICAL GIFTS TO SHARE? God has given us the gift of music to edify our worshippers. If you have the ability to sing or play an
instrument, we hope you will share it with us at Zion. I am looking for musicians, especially during
Lent, to share their musical gifts. I am willing to accompany you or help you find accompaniment.
Please give me a call at 303-667-5671.
Margaret Hinchey, Interim Music Director

THE SUFFICIENCY OF GOD’S GRACE
We are at the beginning of Lent. During the Lenten
season, the church calls to our a"en#on the
sufficiency of what God gives. It points to the
sufficiency of God’s grace in the atoning work of
Jesus. It shows us the sufficiency of faith in Jesus’
work for us. It makes known the sufficiency of God’s
Word in faith and life.
But Lent doesn’t just remind us of the sufficiency of
God’s spiritual gi0s, the gi0s that pertain to our
redemp#on and salva#on. Lent also reminds us of
the sufficiency of the physical, temporal gi0s of
God, those that pertain to this body and life. In
other words, it reminds us of the importance of
godly contentment and of outward discipline and
training of the body.
This outward training of the body teaches us not to
give in to every desire of our flesh but to learn to
say no to them. And it does this in such a way that if
you fail, it is no sin. It is a way to prac#ce without
pu4ng yourself into a compromising situa#on.
The easiest example of this is fas#ng. When you
fast, you are prac#cing saying no to the desires of
your body. But if you fail in this, if you break your
fast, you have not sinned. You have, though,
learned something about how your flesh works,
how difficult it is to fight against it, and how you
need help from above in order to do it.
There is another example of this. It is alms-giving.
This is an increase in giving to the church and its
mission during this #me. We all know that our flesh
finds security in money and stuff. By commi4ng to
give more to the church, you are training your flesh.
You are, by this outward discipline, training yourself
to be content with what God gives. You are
prac#cing saying “no” to your desires. Again, if you
fail, you have not sinned. But you’ve learned just
how powerful your flesh is in leading you instead of
you leading it. You’ve learned how you need help
from above in being content with what God gives.
This is why St. Paul instructs young Pastor Timothy
in this way:
“But godliness with contentment is great
gain, for we brought nothing into the world,
and we cannot take anything out of the
world. But if we have food and clothing, with
these we will be content. But those who
desire to be rich fall into temptaon, into a
snare, into many senseless and harmful
desires that plunge people into ruin and
destrucon. For the love of money is a root
of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving
that some have wandered away from the
faith and pierced themselves with many
pangs.” (1 Tim 6:6–10)
Our sufficiency is not of ourselves; it is in God. Let
us learn this without sin by training our flesh this
Lenten season.

Men's Bible Breakfast looks at
Role of Music The Men's Bible Breakfast will continue its study of the Old Testament hero David, moving into the role of music in a believer's life, when it meets on Saturday, March 14.
The monthly second Saturday class has outgrown space available during Season at The Grind Coffeehouse near Zion. So the group has shifted to Zion's Room 108, just inside the East Entrance.
"Facing Challenges as a Godly Man: David" is
the topic, currently focusing on 1 Samuel 16. Discussion in March will explore David's use of God's gift of music to quiet an anxious king as a way to discuss the role music plays in our lives as Christians.
Breakfast will be available at 8 am, with the study starting at 8:30 am. Bob Goodman will host a continental breakfast of doughnuts, bagels, spreads, coffee and orange juice.
All men in the congregation and community are welcome.
Pastor Hank Simon leads the hour-long discussion. Questions? Contact Bob Goodman ([email protected]).

Be “Convicted” at Zion’s Lenten Midweek Services This Year This year our midweek Lenten services on
Wednesday nights (6:30 p.m.) and Thursday
mornings (10:30 a.m.) will focus on the theme of
Convicted as we ponder the suffering and death of
our Lord. Each “Convicted” service puts a different
Biblical person on trial, accused of a 21st
century
crime. A guiding ques#on leads the arguments of
each case while the congrega#on serves as the jury.
Our Ash Wednesday services, February 26, at 6:30
pm. and Thursday, February 27, at 10:30 a.m. will
include imposi#on of ashes as well as Holy
Communion. A meal at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship
Hall proceeds the Ash Wednesday service. There
will be no TAG on February 27.
The following five weeks will each have a meal at
5:30 p.m. before the 6:30 Wednesday service. On
Thursdays each Lenten service will be at 10:30 a.m.
followed by a TAG Bible study led by Pastor Hinchey

Tax Informa<on
Are taxes evil? Jesus said, when ques#oned about that, “Give
to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God, what is God’s.”
Though some taxes are wasted, much support things we really
need. We want to have roads to drive on. We want to have
security officers to protect us. We depend on government
being there to rescue people from communi#es that are in
crisis. The list could go on and on.
At the same #me we celebrate blessings of services provided
through taxes, many of us also struggle with paying
them. That has probably been true since Egypt began taxing
5,000 years ago. Some of that aversion may flow from our
selfish hearts, not wishing to help others. Some of it flows
from our fear that dollars will not be spent correctly.
God calls us to be good stewards of the gi0s He gives us. Can I
be happy about direc#ng those gi0s to those who have not
proven to be good stewards?
Avoiding taxa#on can never be our prime mo#va#on for
making contribu#ons for suppor#ng the Lord’s work. It is sort
of a defensive posture. That posture causes us to shrink in on
ourselves. Instead, we look to maximize the use of God’s gi0s
to magnify the impact they will have on spotligh#ng the love
of Jesus in the world.
Our faithful decisions will be mindful of poten#al tax savings
and use legal opportuni#es to save tax dollars, knowing those
savings will enable us to do even more, showing love to family
or suppor#ng ministries the Lord has laid on our hearts.
Be aware that a simple review of your estate plan may turn up
many opportuni#es to fine-tune your service to the Lord. If
you want to look into this, your LCMS Gi0 Planning Counselor
can help. For more informa#on, contact Jim Pennington, Zion
Gi0 Planning Counselor, at 863-370-0305 or

In Exodus Chapter 16, we read of the fascinating
account of God literally raining down bread from heaven!
This is a tremendous reminder for us today of how our
great God provides “daily bread” for his people.
Well, I have never found any manna on my lawn in the
morning, but I still constantly marvel at how God
continues to provide for His people and for His church. A
great example of that is an awesome new resource
called http://heartfeltgiving.net/.
Heartfelt Giving has given over $52,000 to Lutheran
churches and charities over the last 3 years.
Now Zion has the opportunity to receive cash back
from Heartfeltgiving!
Here’s how it works! Many of us are already shopping
online at name-brand stores and travel centers and
receiving nothing back for doing so. Now, with http://
heartfeltgiving.net/, we can get cash for our church with
every online purchase we make!
Since the average family spends enough online to bring
back to their church about $102 per year, a church with
100 families would generate over $10,000 for ministries
in their church every year! Larger churches (and those
with schools or preschools) would generate even more.
Zion Lutheran has registered with Heartfelt Giving for
FREE!
And now Zion has its own online shopping mall.
You can get to our mall through our own unique web
address at
heartfeltgiving.net/np14
You must go through this web address in order to
benefit Zion!
First, you type in the above web address and go to the Heartfelt Giving website and you will see our name Zion Lutheran Church near the top of the page. This means you are in our online mall. Now, let’s say you want to shop online at the Walmart store. So, you look through the stores on the site until you find the Walmart store and then click on their logo. You will then be directed to their site and you just simply do your online shopping like you always do. The prices are the same when you go through our shopping mall on the Heartfelt Giving website as they are if you were to go directly to that site. The only difference is that when you go shopping online through our shopping mall, using Zion’s personal website address, then our church will get a percentage of what we spend sent back to our church! So now you can shop online and at the same time benefit our church. What a great stewardship opportunity we have been blessed with.
The VBS that’s Just the Ticket!!
On March 27, 2020 we will be hos#ng our VBS
Kickoff at Heights Center. We will be doing a
Program preview for our Summer VBS June 15-19.
This year we will be climbing aboard the Mountains
of fun at the Rocky Railway. On this faith-filled
adventure, kids will discover that trus#ng Jesus
pulls us through life’s ups and downs. Each day the
kids come and join in an opening session where
they sing, see a skit and learn the day’s theme.
A0er they break into groups and go to a theme
based Bible lesson, cra0s, music and other
ac#vi#es. Finally, they come back to wrap up the
day and share “God sigh#ngs.” We normally get
over 100 kids each day as we learn about Jesus and
His love ❤ for us. More informa#on will
follow as the VBS planning con#nues. If this sounds
like fun to you, volunteers are welcome and very
much appreciated. For more informa#on please
contact Sharon Kranz (239) 560-9120.

Zion Book Club News
The Zion Book Club met on February 12
to discuss “The Girls at 17 Swann Street,” by
Yara Zgheib. This is the story of a group of
women who were forced to seek treatment for
eating disorders. We learned a lot about the
challenges, difficulties and heartbreaks of this
illness. We will meet again on Wednesday,
March 11, 2020 at 1 p.m. in Room 4 to
discuss “Radium Girls—the dark story of
America’s shining women,” by Kate Moore.
This is the account of the young women who
worked in radium-dial factories in the early
1900s. As the fatal poison of the radium took
hold, they found themselves
embroiled in one of America's
biggest scandals and a
groundbreaking battle for
workers' rights. Join us! New
members always welcome!
Brothers in Christ Bible class Explores 'distorted images,' Proverbs The Brothers in Christ men's Bible class will conclude a study on "Distorted Images of Self" and start exploring the Old Testament book of Proverbs as it meets twice in March.
The concluding topic looks at ways we think and feel about ourselves, moving to how this impacts our relationships with others, and especially the God who loves us.
Dale Kraemer will lead a session on "Disconnected Versus Bonded in Love" starting at 10 am Tuesday, March 3 in Room 108. This final topic will focus on Genesis 16, the story of Abraham's first-born son -- who was not Isaac -- and the mother of that child, Hagar.
Richard Butt will begin the study of selected proverbs as a guide to wise living in a session on "The Choice" at 10 am Tuesday, March 17 in
Room 108. This topic is based on Proverbs chapter 9.
Grab a cup of coffee or tea and a pastry, then join us for some spiritual nourishment. Contact Denny Bowers ([email protected] or 239-945-7105) if questions.
Brothers in Christ meet for Bible study at 10 am on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, then share in fellowship over breakfast at an area restaurant at 9 am on the fourth Tuesday.

Congregation to consider Oasis' future on March 1 Extending the Oasis contemporary Saturday service beyond its trial period will be considered by voters at a Sunday, March 1, Zion congregational meeting.
A 14-week trial period for the 5 pm "come as you are" informal service began Jan. 11 and will end April 11, the Saturday of Easter weekend.
The 12:05 pm meeting in the sanctuary has two agenda items. The other proposes issuing a call for the newly-approved fulltime staff position of director of parish music. (See article about this proposal elsewhere in this newsletter.)
Oasis differs from the Sunday services by having a different theme, preacher and sermon, different songs and musicians (a praise band), different worship style (family-friendly informal in a relaxed setting) and different worship space (fellowship hall).
Attendance for the first six weeks averaged 107 worshipers (the latest figure available as of this issue's deadline).
Notable services were Feb. 8, when special music was presented by children of the Early Childhood Center, and Feb. 15, when Communion was celebrated for the first time.
A rotation of preachers (including Pastor Curtis Deterding and Pastor Don Hinchey) takes turns presenting the message in topical sermon series at Oasis. March 7 marks the first message in the final series during the trial period on "Those People," considering how to respond to individuals who are hard to love.
Upcoming weekly worship themes are listed on the Oasis page on the Zion website (Zionfm.org).

Doors open: 5:00 p.m.
Questions begin: 6:00 p.m.
You and seven of your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and/or total strangers make up a table of 8
and become a team. You come up with one answer you can agree upon to 10 questions on a topic. There
will be 10 topics throughout the evening, 100 total questions for the night. There may be 10 questions on
Bible knowledge or Music or History of WWII etc. The one team at the end of the evening with the highest
score will be the grand-prize winners. You may buy a single ticket and fill in a table. This is a great way to
make new friends or spend time with others that you may not get to see often. It is also a wonderful
opportunity to be a missionary in our own community by inviting someone to join your table that
may be looking for a church home. High school youth will help serve your table and assist
throughout the evening. Tables can bring their own dinner— eat before they come, your choice! Soft drinks
and water will be available for purchase at the event for $1 each from our youth. Teams and individuals

Who we are
Amigos en Cristo (Friends in Christ) is a
ministry of the Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod churches of Southwest Florida.
We provide spiritual, social and legal
services to immigrants of our region.
Amigos en Cristo has helped thousands
of immigrants to a be"er life since its founding in 1997.
Church Planting
Our ul#mate desire is to see all people
recognize Jesus as their Lord and Savior
and to be able to connect to a
community of believers so they can grow
in their rela#onship with Him. Our church
plants include Estero and Immokalee where we worship in
Spanish and Creole.
Immigration
Through our Amigos Center, we provide
low-cost services for immigrants seeking
ci#zenship, temporary protected status,
residency, work authoriza#ons, and
general consulta#ons. We served 1,388
dis#nct immigra#on clients in 2019.
Social Services
Our Amigos Center offers essen#al social
services that show genuine care, develop
rela#onships and build trust. We publish a
Spanish language newcomers’ guide,
clothing, adult educa#on and much more.
Each year we provide emergency food to
thousands of farmworkers in the agricultural
town of Immokalee. In 2019 we distributed 159,677 pounds
of food to 4,100 families and clothing to 864 families in
Immokalee, Florida.
