A Q &with Barbara Collins: the incoming Humber River Hospital president

fannie sunshine [email protected]

Q: What are your thoughts on your new appointment, and what do you plan to bring to the role?

A: Well, I’m very honoured to have been chosen to succeed Rueben. I’m grateful for the con-fidence the board has shown in selecting me for the role. I’ve been in health care my entire career – over 35 years. It’s where my passion is, and I will use that experience and passion to ensure we deliver excellent patient care. And that’s where I see my main focus – working with our phy-sicians, staff and volunteers to ensure our patients and families have an excellent experience, each and every time they come to Humber River Hospital.

Q: HRH is North American’s first fully digital hospital. How

has technology helped when it comes to health care?

A: There’s really no other hos-pital building like this on the con-tinent. The technology is quite amazing. Some of it plays a big role in allowing better communi-cation among our care providers as a team, as well as with their patients and family members. For example, with a surgery patient’s permission, a family member any-where in the world can receive a text informing them at each stage where the patient is at – when they enter the operating theatre, how surgery is progressing, when it is over, when they enter the recovery room and when the family can see them.

Q: What’s the feedback been since the new hospital opened?

A: The reaction has been very, very positive for the most part. Patients and families especially like the single inpatient rooms

– there’s a real feeling of privacy and comfort in having your own room and your own three-piece bathroom. The family zone in the room for a family member to stay overnight has been a big hit. It has a full-length sleeper bed that provides a comfortable resting space, a separate reading light, privacy curtain and great views of the city.

Q: What is the hospital’s focus now that the new building is open?

A: As I mentioned earlier, taking this great new building that we now have, and working with my team to deliver excellent health care every day. That’s our core business – it’s what we need to do for every patient: compassionate, professional, respectful care. Every patient. Every day.

Humber River Hospital (HRH) has a new president and CEO. Effective Friday, July 1, Barbara Collins will hold the top job at the hospital, replacing outgoing president and CEO Rueben Devlin.

For the past 16 years, Collins has served the hospital in several senior executive roles, mainly as chief operating officer. A registered nurse,

with an MBA from Queen’s University, Collins has more than 35 years experience in all major clinical and management functions of an acute care hospital.

The Mirror caught up with Collins to ask about her new job, the role technology plays in health care and the hospital’s focus going forward.

St. Simon Catholic Elementary School students won’t have to walk too far when they head to class in their new replacement building in September 2018.

Sod was overturned Friday at 24 Strathburn Blvd., which will house the new two-storey, 5,300-square-metre school, situated 400 metres from the current site at 20 Wallasey Ave. near Hwy. 400 and Wilson Avenue.

The new $12-million school, fully funded by the Ministry of Education, will house 542 stu-

dents from junior kindergarten to grade 8 and will include a gymnasium, stage and multi-purpose room available for public use outside of school hours.

An adjacent public park will provide for a more protected play area for the students to the south and the west, along with an off-street bus drop-off area.

The site of the new school formerly housed Melody Public School, since torn down, which the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) purchased from the Toronto District School Board

(TDSB) after the school was declared surplus.

St. Simon currently enrols 452 students in an area pro-jected for growth, said Maia Puccetti, superintendent of facilities and services for the TCDSB.

And with six portables in use as classrooms, the 1.83-acre site simply could not expand any further, she said of the need to move.

“The existing St. Simon is in poor condition and is undersized,” Puccetti said. “(The new school) will be a vast improvement compared to the older building we’re in

now.”Construction is scheduled

for July, and the hope is to house students in September 2018, she said.

The new school will have WiFi throughout, with class-rooms equipped with SMART Boards.

The kitchen will not only be used for students and staff, but for community groups looking for space, she said.

As for the current school site, Puccetti said the TCDSB has entered into an agreement with a developer, but could not discuss specifics as a deal is not yet official.

Toronto Council is being asked to approve a system to licence the city’s landlords, and we believe it’s an idea whose time has come.

At a committee meeting last week discussing the issue, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks came out strongly in favour of the proposal.

“We have a duty to make sure that no one in the City of Toronto lives in squalor,” he said. “That’s an absolute minimum requirement that we have to meet and if we don’t meet it, we’re failing in our responsibilities as councillors.”

We couldn’t have said it better if we’d written the motion ourselves. It is without question the responsi-bility of our elected officials to make sure we have rules and regulations in place that guarantee basic human dignity. The thought of people living in “squalor,” as Perks described it, is something that belongs in the

pages of history.Of course such conditions are

unacceptable, and our city must have the legal means to enforce laws preventing such a thing.

To that end, councillors will be voting on a bylaw at their meet-ing on June 7 that will allow the city to directly fine landlords who

are not meeting minimum standards. As it stands now, fines against landlords are levied by the province.

The new bylaw would see the city impose the fines as part of administrative fees and it would also make sure buildings are regularly inspected, rather than when complaints are made, which is how the current system works.

Councillors are also being asked to improve the inspection system for rental apartments and to set minimum standards for when the city itself will come in and do the work and bill the landlord.

Also, councillors are being asked to approve the city collecting more detailed information about landlords who constantly violate the rules and to set up a rating system.

Those are two more good ideas councillors should be acting on.

It should be noted the biggest landlord in Toronto is actually the city itself through Toronto Community Housing (TCH). And as of last week, TCH was at the top of the list of complaints at LandLordWatch.com, which advocates for tenant rights in the city,

One hopes that along with getting tough on land-lords in the private sector, these new city standards and rules will also improve the quality of publicly owned housing as well.

No one should live in squalor

Our VieW

Toronto has duty to protect tenant rights

Expo 2025, here in Toronto, with a major build in the

city’s port lands, the eyes of the world on us, fancy pavilions from around the world, visitors from every-where...

How’s that sound? Tough to say no.

Actually, it looks as though it will be pretty easy for Toronto to say no.

On Monday, Mayor John Tory offered as tepid a response as he could to a letter from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau indicating the federal government would be interested in exploring a bid.

He was even more tepid Tuesday, after a group of business and political lead-ers came to Toronto City Hall to offer up a private-sector funded business case for hosting the exposi-tion.

A study advocating a business case – that, he was

fine with. But a commit-ment to hosting the event that involved either sig-nificant city expenditure or funding from other levels of government that might cut into money that would otherwise go to the city? Not likely.

It would, in fact, have been very difficult for the mayor to say anything else this week, as his Executive Committee was grappling with a bombshell report from City Manager Peter Wallace talking about Toronto’s long-term fiscal forecast.

The report has been floating around for more than a week, and its find-ings are stark: Toronto is headed for a fiscal cliff, and soon.

Council’s two contradic-tory imperatives – to pro-vide fulsome services and infrastructure, and to mini-mize the tax burden on property owners – means that very soon, Toronto Council will no longer be able to balance its annual budget.

How, under those cir-cumstances, do you say yes to a plan to host a world’s fair 25 years into the 21st century, of the sort that was really only a big deal in the middle of the 20th century?

It’s not to say that an old-fashioned Expo wouldn’t bring some benefit to the city and the country.

It would showcase the city to interested, forward-looking visitors. And it would maintain that inter-est over the better part of a year.

But really, Toronto can do all of that on its own, and is doing that on its own. The port lands are

already undergoing a major redevelopment and regeneration, meticulously planned and with great private-sector interest. Those precincts don’t need pavilions – they need parkland and housing and office/industrial space.

We are already undergo-ing a massive and at-least partially funded public transit expansion.

Would a successful Expo bid accelerate that? Or would it simply shift fund-ing to other transit projects that might benefit visitors better than Torontonians?

Last year, Tory did some-thing that few other mayors have done, and said no to a potential Olympic bid.

It’s not hard to see a repeat performance when it comes to Expo.

It’s easy for mayor to say no to Expo 2025

More than 60 restaurants and 30 beverage purveyors will help raise funds for Second Harvest through Toronto Taste on Sunday, June 12.

Now in its 26th year, funds raised from the downtown event will help the North York charity rescue fresh, healthy food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it to more than 220 social service agencies across the Greater Toronto Area.

Some 1,500 attendees are expected, with the goal of rais-ing at least $750,000.

“We’re looking forward to an unforgettable culinary experience at Toronto Taste,” Debra Lawson, executive director of Second Harvest, said in a release. “This year promises to be bigger and better than ever before and we are thrilled to host an all-star lineup of Toronto’s brightest and most celebrated chefs and beverage purveyors.”

Since 1991, the event has raised more than $11 million to support Second Harvest’s food rescue program. This has enabled the organization to rescue enough fresh, surplus food to support hundreds of social ser- vice

agen-

cies across the GTA with more than 27 million meals for children, adults and seniors experiencing hunger in the city.

“Twenty per cent of all of our fundraising comes directly from Toronto Taste, making this event critical for Second Harvest’s success,” Lawson said.

Long-time Toronto Taste participant Dufflet Rosenberg, owner of the eponymous pastry cafes, said she feels strongly about food waste.

“We have participated at Toronto Taste every year right from the beginning 25 years ago,” she said in an email. “We have always

donated our surplus cakes to local shelters and fundrais-ers and have been on Second Harvest’s pick-up route for a long time. We feel strongly about not throwing away good food made with fine ingredi-ents when with a little effort it can be shared with someone in need.”

New this year to Toronto Taste, Second Harvest will offer three individuals the opportunity to become sous chef during the Chef Challenge for one of the three compet-ing chefs: Kaya Ogruce, Darby Piquette, and Ivana Raca. Also, one top fundraiser will earn a spot at the all-star judge’s panel alongside Cynthia Beretta, chef Nick Liu, chef Matt DeMille, and chef Juriaan Snellen.

Toronto Taste will be held at Corus Quay, 25 Dockside Dr., at 6 p.m. Admission is $260, of which $125 is tax deductible. Attendees must be 19 years of age or older.

upon entering and will have their backs to it while seated, said Janice Bearg, program manager for Park People, which is co-ordinating the mural’s creation.

“The idea has been brew-ing for a while,” she said.

A mural rendering was presented to participants of a clean-up at the Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue park at the beginning of May, which has had slight adjust-ments made to accommo-date public input, she said, adding an official ribbon cut-ting will take place Sunday, July 31.

“I’m very excited about it and it’s a wonderful addi-tion to the amphitheatre,” Bearg said.

The mural fal ls into a neighbourhood high-

lighted by

this year’s Cultural Hotspot program, which will be cel-ebrated in North York May through October.

Now in its third year, the city-run program will focus on neighbourhoods extend-ing north and south from Finch to Lawrence avenues, and west to east from Jane Street to the Hwy. 404/Don Valley Parkway.

The Cultural Hotspot will feature a number of signature

proj-

ects, which provide inter-active arts opportunities for youth across North York, including an acting bootcamp, mural painting workshops, a festival, per-forming arts and mentorship opportunities.

C o u n c i l l o r J a m e s Pasternak said he believes the mural is a good fit for the park.

“I like it very much,” he said of early renderings.

“ I t ’s c r e -ative, excit-ing, robust. It’s quite a remarkable design.”

A growing trend in Toronto and other cities around the world, urban farming is meeting the needs of a growing population

JUSTIN SKINNER [email protected]

With the world’s population expected to boom to as many as 11 billion people by 2050 and more and more people looking to go green and buy locally, urban farming is growing in popularity in Toronto and other cities around the world.

Toronto welcomed two more urban farms in recent days, with food plants being grown in crates in order to help feed some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.

At Scadding Court Community Centre, a new crate garden installed by urban gardening initiative The Bowery Project and local volunteers will see 250 square feet of food being grown.

It features 500 milk crates stacked two crates high, with plants being grown in the upper-most crate. Given that soil in cities often contains contaminants, the two-crate stacks help ensure the soil in which the food is grown is

clean and free of toxins. Rachel Kimel, who co-founded

The Bowery Project (www.bowery-project.ca) with Deena DelZotto a few years ago, said the Scadding crate garden would support the surrounding community in several ways.

“The food grown here will sup-port Alexandra Park throughout its revitalization, along with the (Scadding Court) community centre and its food programs and a local youth centre,” she said. “It’s also a good way to engage local youth. Alexandra Park youth will do the maintenance work, and it helps connect people because when you’re out getting dirty in the garden, there are no language barriers.”

The garden is one of several initiated by Kimel and DelZotto since 2014.

“We have a site outside the YMCA building at 7 Vanauley with 1,500 milk crates where all the food gets directed into the homeless shelter,” said Kimel.

Scadding Court Community Centre executive director Kevin Lee said his organization would also provide volunteers to help maintain the new crate garden, adding that a local women’s shelter has also offered to lend a hand.

“It’s a great initiative to help animate urban spaces and create edibles here in the city,” he said. “This project fits in with our plan to help improve food security and food access in the community.”

Yorkdale Shopping Centre has also added a new urban farm, led by Frank Ferragine (also known as Frankie Flowers) to help boost sustainability initiatives and give back to the community.

“I got the idea when I first saw Fenway Farms at Fenway Park in Boston and thought ‘that’s pretty compelling,’” Ferragine said. “I’d been helping Yorkdale with their

internal planting to help make it more welcoming and saw they have a lot of roof space that would be great to grow food on.”

While the initial plan was to plant Yorkdale’s Elevated Eats

urban farm – which grows plants in special-

ized crates – atop Yorkdale’s food court,

the ability of the roof to support such a

structure, the fact that Yorkdale is in a flight path and other issues led to the initia-

tive being moved, at least for the time

being, to the office building parking deck at

1 Yorkdale Road (south end of the mall).

“Right now it’s a test farm,” Ferragine said. “It’s about 1,000 square feet but the goal next year is to grow it to 5,000 square feet.”

That should be possible once the shopping centre’s renovation

is complete.Elevated Eats features more

than 25 kinds of edibles, including herbs such as rosemary, basil and oregano, several types of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and more. The food grown and harvested there, or proceeds from the sale of the food, will go toward Daily Bread Food Bank.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to give back to the community,” said Yorkdale Shopping Centre general manager Claire Santamaria. “It’s also an extension of the sustain-able initiatives we have here. For instance, 60 per cent of our expan-sion’s roof area will be a green roof with the runoff being used as grey water in our toilets and for other non-drinking water uses.”

The urban farm will also be open to school groups who can learn more about farming at the site.

For more information on Elevated Eats or to volunteer, email [email protected] or visit www.frankieflowers.com

never be predicted with cer-tainty”, Perry said he didn’t foresee any issues with the group’s planned summer tour.

He also couldn’t predict how long the singer has left to live, as it varies from patient to patient, though he did note this type of cancer does return.

“It’s a bit of an emotional day today,” said Bernie Breen, one of Downie’s man-agers. “I feel the same way everyone in the country does. Shock, and now what’s next and how can we help?”

Questioning Downie’s health for a summer tour, his manager Patrick Sambrook said the icon wouldn’t attempt this if he didn’t feel up to it.

“Gord doesn’t want to go out unless he can do his thing,” he said.

Word of Downie’s diag-nosis came earlier Tuesday

when the band released a s t a t e m e n t o n t h e i r website.

“Hello friends,” the state-ment reads. “We have some very tough news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn’t so. A few months ago, in December, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Since then, obviously, he’s endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard. In

privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we’ve been standing by him.”

The statement went on to say “so after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hundreds of tours... we’ve decided to do another one. This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us... so, we’re going to dig deep, and try to make this our best tour yet.”

Mayor Tory and Executive Committee vote to keep council the same sizeDAVID NICKLE [email protected]

Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee has punted a report recommending new city council ward boundar-ies to October and asked its authors to show how council could remain the same size as now.

The report from consul-tants had recommended Toronto council increase in size by three, from 44 to 47, in order to equalize representa-tion in a growing city.

But Tory made it clear he wouldn’t support an increase in council’s size.

“I have nothing against politicians – I am one – but I think we have enough of them to do the job effectively,” Tory said.

Tory’s motion to refer the report back to the city manager and the outside consultants was approved by committee unanimously.

The committee will hear from them again Oct. 26, follow-ing further consultation and various refinements to the map.

The current recommenda-tion would see councillors added in the former North York and downtown Toronto, and retain the old munici-pal boundaries of Etobicoke on the Humber River and Scarborough on Victoria Park Avenue.

Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher said that some con-

sideration should be given to setting ward boundaries that also respected the former municipalities of East York and York or, conversely, that a 44-ward city might have to consider “piercing” the boundaries of Etobicoke and Scarborough.

“We may have to stop the Humber River and Victoria Park being sacred,” she said. “If we’re going to be hon-ouring the boundaries of Scarborough and Etobicoke, we’re going to have to think about other legacy munici-palities.”

Tory’s motion asked the consultants to consider respecting the current com-munity council boundaries, which save Scarborough do not reflect the former munici-pal boundaries.

As well, the consultants have been asked to look again at the 47 ward option and consider reducing it to 46 wards.

Catch Stage Center Production’s version of You Never Can TellStage Center Productions wraps up their 39th season with George Bernard Shaw’s early comedy You Never Can Tell.

The focus here is on a penniless dentist named Valentine, who finds he is fall-ing in love. The object of his affection is Gloria Clandon, the eldest daughter of a cel-ebrated author of a series of books promoting 20th cen-tury principles. Following her mother’s “modern” thinking, Gloria disdains the idea of love and marriage.

Meanwhile, her rambunc-tious siblings Dolly and Phil have invited the dentist to lunch along with his landlord who just happens to be their long estranged father.

Shaw has provided the basic ingredients so all you need to make this soufflé rise is a dedicated cast and production team.

Scott Griffith directs the piece with a crisp edge ensur-ing that every comic line

generates the appropriate laughs. Playing the dentist, Holm Bradwell has a mas-terful delivery, articulating Shaw’s words beautifully yet casually so they do not come across as scripted lines but rather as natural expressions of the character’s thoughts and feelings. Playing Gloria, Kate MacDonald delivers a performance of forthright determination that only later slips a little to reveal her true romantic longings.

Adding spice to their scenes are Sara Jackson and Stephen Vani playing the twins Dolly and Phillip who don’t so much enter each scene, but appear to be bouncing all over the stage practically finishing each other’s sentences. They are in sharp contrast to their mother, Mrs. Clandon, played with grace and charm by Heather Goodall. Her reac-

tion upon learning that the guest the twins invited to lunch with them is none other than her estranged husband is delicious.

Michel Chodos is properly uptight as the estranged father uncomfortable in being reac-quainted with his family.

The play gets rolling quickly and the laughter builds as the show rolls merrily along. This is a very funny play and well worth seeing. After all, you don’t have to go all the way to Niagara-on-the-Lake to see a first-class production of one of Shaw’s most popular plays.

You Never Can Tell is playing through Saturday at Fairview Library Theatre, 35 Fairview Mall Dr. For tickets, visit www.StageCentreProductions.com

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYINGWorking with Sam Samivand on the sale of our home couldn’t have gone more smoothly. Sam originally met with us to go over his process which was extremelythought through and strategic. We liked that he only put in place steps that generated true interest in the property - not just including something that has “always beendone” but doesn’t positively influence the sale. He also respected and incorporated our own needs and comfort levels in this process which was very much appreciated. What was also impressive was that he really helped manage our expectations on what we could get for the sale of our home. He was always fully prepared - showingus historical sale prices on comparable homes as well as discussing in detail the current state of the market leveraging his experience and knowledge in the industry. He provided us with an educated but realistic estimate of a price range that he felt that we could get for our home - he wasn’t just trying to impress us by guessing thepotential for the highest possible bid.The marketing materials used were very targeted and of high quality and the professional photos beautifully presented the home. The actual sale was done in oneevening with Sam strategically negotiating the multiple offers submitted. We ending up selling our home at record prices in our neighbourhood! We couldn’t havebeen happier with the end result and that was all due to Sam’s expertise and customized strategy that he put in place for us.Thank you Sam for making the sale of our home as easy and successful as possible.Michael Whittaker and Vanessa Martin

A website listing the 100 “worst” landlords in Toronto has launched on the eve of a debate on a possible bylaw to

require a licence to rent out apartments.

T h e w e b s i t e , LandlordWatch: Toronto is based on a similar listing in the out-of-control rental market in New York City, which lets potential tenants

know when they might be signing a lease to regret.

complaints

The website lists buildings and landlords, and aggregates information on complaints

that have been made to the city about particular proper-ties.

“Generally what you see is neglect,” he said.

“So if you have renters asking to fix something and they don’t fix it, so the renter

has to call the city. These problems range from

everything from bedbugs, roaches, moulds, to no heat or hot water, or just that the grass isn’t cut.”

The website ranks prop-erties by the number of city

investigations they’ve sparked over the last year.

And as far as landlords go, Toronto Community Housing is the worst by a mile, with 452 violations through its holdings.

-David Nickle

Bad Toronto landlords outed on new websitetcH properties have 452 violations

An advocacy group claims there are nearly as many bicycles on College Street during rush hour as there are cars.

Cycle Toronto says it found from 5 to 6 p.m. 46 per cent of road users at the intersection of College and Spadina Avenue were cyclists, compared to 54 per cent cars, according to a traffic count completed last September.

According to the group, the result is particularly impressive since just 19 per cent of the road is dedicated for cyclists in the form of bike lanes.

Toronto Council is expected to debate a 10-year cycling plan for bike lane expansion at its June monthly meeting.

wbombardier says it can meet deadlines

Just a few days after Bombardier announced a plan to deliver all of Toronto’s new streetcars on schedule comes word

another prominent transit project is postponed.

Production issues are affecting Kitchener-Waterloo’s ION light rail cars, which are under con-struction by the transporta-tion giant, meaning the light rail project is now scheduled to open in early 2018.

Late last week, Bombardier announced it was shifting production from its Thunder Bay plant to dedicate the facility’s operations full-time to the TTC streetcars.

Bombardier is still opti-mistic it can fill the full order of 204 new streetcars, of which it has delivered 18 so far, by 2019.

wttc urged to help low income earners

The city’s most prominent transit advocacy group is looking to drum up sup-

port ahead of a critical TTC board meeting.

In an attempt to ratchet the pressure up on the board, TTCriders is circulat-ing a petition calling for more considerations for low-income transit users.

With the TTC board expected to debate forth-coming recommendations at the May 31 meeting on providing fare relief, TTCriders is making its own demands. It wants:

• fares reduced to zero for riders on social assistance;

• Metropass and token prices frozen for anyone earning under $22,000 a year;

• and discounts for social service agencies making fare purchases.

View the Change.org petition here: www.change.org/p/we-need-low-fares-for-low-income-riders-on-may-31

According to Blayne Lastman, noooooobody’s better at help-ing kids in need of urgent care than the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

Lastman, the well-known owner of the Lastman’s Bad Boy furniture chain, dropped by the hospital on Friday to deliver a $208,000 cheque in support of SickKids’ Labatt Family Heart Centre. The funds were raised through customer and staff donations, supplier support and through the chain itself. He was greeted by SickKids Foundation presi-dent Ted Garrard, SickKids head of cardiovascular sur-gery Glen Van Arsdell and SickKids ambassador Jonathan Richardson as he made the impressive donation.

“There’s no better institu-tion in the world for kids,” he said. “I met Dr. Van Arsdell a couple of years ago and his love of the game (keeping children healthy) is incred-ible. Given how much he loves

what he does, well that got to me too.”

Richardson, 13, has been nicknamed “Captain Cardiac” by his friends at school. While still in utero, he was diagnosed with a heart defect that left him essentially with half a heart and he has subsequently undergone three open heart surgeries, the first when he

was only three days old.“It’s my home away from

home,” the youngster said of SickKids.

“It’s where my doctors and nurses took care of me. Every year when I come for my check-up, they say hi, tell me how much I’ve grown and how well I’m doing – and I am doing well.”

The votes are in and the Ca n a d i a n Au t o m o b i l e Association (CAA) is getting set to reveal the worst road in the province.

Representatives from the association’s Southern Ontario chapter will reveal the “winners” of The Worst Roads campaign, which relies on public feedback to uncover the most pot-hole strewn, congested or just plain dangerous road in the entire province.

Last year, a road in Timmins was the winner, but Toronto factored heavily into the top

10, with former worst roads recipient Dufferin Street and Bayview Avenue both making the list.

The campaign ran for almost the entire month of April and allowed for roads to be nominated or voted via www.caaworstroads.com

In contrast to past cam-paigns, this year’s contest allowed stretches of road to be nominated, for example Yonge Street between Leslie Street and Lawrence Avenue.

The results will be revealed 8 a.m. on Thursday at Evergreen Brickworks.

Foodie abandonsnuclear engineeringto launch taquieria

For Gauravi Shah, cooking was just a hobby, something to do in the evenings to distractherself from the daily grind of working as anuclear engineer in Pickering. That is, until shediscovered she had a genuine knack for it.

We know what you’re thinking: sure, her

and a hundred other budding restaurateurshoping to capitalize on Toronto’s vibrant culinarycommunity. Except for Gauravi, it worked.Shortly after beginning the search for a locationto host her concept Tilde – a taquiera thatexperiments with cross-cultural flavours andhawks craft brews and cocktails – she found aspot on the Danforth, an area growing beyondits Greek routes to more diverse food offerings.

“I quit my job and the next week I had alocation,” she says. “I was expecting it to be along drawn out process.”

Gauravi was able to get some assistancefrom Enterprise Toronto. “I applied for (StarterCompany) because we really needed the fundsto expand the staffing and expand our hoursinto brunch service,” she explains. She got thegrant, fine-tuned her business plan and receivedmentorship, as well.

“People from a couple other startups gottogether and (although) they were starting appsand techs companies and I was starting a brickand mortar place it was interesting to see thedifferent perspectives,” she says. “Some werehaving issues with staffing and training so it wasgood to find that common ground even throughour industries are completely different.”

Since completing the program theentrepreneur and foodie has added brunch toTilde’s offerings.

“Enterprise Toronto really helped me to try toaddress a very challenging area in the industry,”says Gauravi.
