WELCOME...In this edition of Enlightened, our theme is about being both inspired and inspiring.

As a business we are frequently inspired by theschemes that designers bring to us for developmentand manufacture – in a world class creative hub likethe UK, the concepts with which we are presentednever cease to amaze.

It is said that nothing is new – but sometimes despitethe increasingly eclectic nature of our world, we seeideas expressed in original and smart new ways. Forexample ZAAP and Sukhothai restaurants for theYorkshire based Sukho Group. We made the featurelights – a constantly evolving concept with a delightfulresult. The inspiring process and outcome is featuredon pages 4 to 9.

Just because we are manufacturers doesn’t mean wecan’t have good ideas too and sometimes we are thesource of the inspiration. In fact many would say thatthat is a key part of our role. Hence our new andbespoke product collections featured on pages 16 to19 which we hope will help expand the boundaries ofwhat we and our customers think is possible. Materials.Shapes. Ideas.

Maybe the role of all the major players in our industryis to be inspired and to be inspiring – hopefully we canplay our part in ensuring that happens.

Please enjoy this edition ofEnlightened and of coursethank you for taking the timeto read it.

CREATIVE LIGHTING FROM NORTHERN LIGHTS ADDS A PINCH OF ORIENTALFLAVOUR TO ZAAP AND SUKHOTHAI – IN TWO VERY DIFFERENT WAYS!

ONE OF A KIND...We have been working on ZAAP and Sukothairestaurants since 2013 with Andrew Holdsworth ofHDP – two distinctly different brands from theYorkshire-based Sukho Group. From the beginning, the brief was simple: ‘To create an authentic ThaiHeaven in the middle of English towns and cities.’This gave both the designer and Northern Lightsnot only a huge amount of creative freedom but alsothe challenge of developing real destinationrestaurants that offer a one of a kind experience.

‘Can we think out of the box?’ and ‘Can we domore?’ were the questions constantly asked duringthe design process. Andrew not only referenced theextensive Northern Lights’ catalogues as a source ofinspiration, but together we also introduced manybespoke features in order to enhance the uniquefeel of each restaurant.

ZAAP THAI – STREET FOOD INDOORSZAAP’s vision is to replicate a Bangkok streetmarket exactly as it is - the flavour, the aromas, the sound, the sights, the excitement. Not onlyare there tuk-tuks - the tuk-tuks double asdining booths. The boxing shorts and t-shirts are an instant attention grabber. Theflashing neon lights warn the passing traffic. In Nottingham the mock train tracks lead to areal size train cabin, telling the story of howcommuters take a break and enjoy takingsustenance at the famous Maeklong Station.

Maybe surprisingly not everything looks like it was born on the streets of Bangkok. TheNorthern Lights’ catalogues were raided foritems closer to home. From old station ceilinglights to spun pendants, we re-finished thefittings in antique brass to mirror the well-wornfinish of the vintage style furniture and tocomplement the giant industrial style pendants.Ribbed glass pendants with a metal trim in anantique finish were installed above the traveltrunks which double as bench seating -obviously evoking the genuine atmosphere of a busy Far Eastern train station.

Working with the designer, we manufactured arange of bespoke ceiling features. Bird cagependants with colourful fabric cylinder shadesand mesh tubes hang alongside the swagceiling lights which feature glass shades andrecycled tin cans. The dynamic mix blendsseamlessly with the colourful bunting and t-shirt display.

And how can you re-create a Bangkok streetwithout flashing advertising hoardings? Youcan’t, so flashing advertising hoardings it hadto be! The light boxes were constructed frommetal frames with acrylic panels. They are lit by 7w LEDs – maybe the only contemporaryelement in the interior!

SUKHOTHAI – THE FINEST THAI CUISINEServing classic Thai cuisine, Sukhothai is amore conventional Thai restaurant than ZAAP.The challenge was to create a place fused withThai flavour whilst avoiding the stereotypicalartefacts frequently associated with Thai andAsian cuisine. For inspiration the designerdelved deeply into Thai history and culture. The final design is a balanced andsophisticated scheme featuring earthy tonesand contemporary sharp lines. It is enhancedby stunning authentic artworks, many of whichwere imported from Thailand directly. Thelighting echoes this design approach withmodern chandeliers and pendants underscoredby subtle oriental references.

A recurring feature in both Harrogate andHeadingley is the pleated pendants. Takinginspiration from oriental lanterns, each pendantcomprises a honey silk cylinder shade with acontrasting black voile outer.

Contemporary glass ball chandeliers were alsoextensively specified. In Harrogate a bespokechandelier was specially developed for the bararea. In a carefully selected range of finishesfrom clear, chrome and tinted amber to greyand black, it offsets the earthy tones of the furniture. All the glass balls were hand-finished by our skilled glass workers preciselyin line with the client’s specification.

In Leeds City Centre we supplied the centralfitting in the basement area, which featureshundreds of glass balls suspended from thebrass ceiling plate - Thailand, here we come!Talking about the project, Paul Harrison,Northern Lights’ Northern Sales Manager said:‘Restaurants have always been about creatingan overall experience, encompassingeverything from the taste of the food to thenature of the surroundings. But the SukhoGroup and HDP have pushed the boundaries of both. The food is terrific - and the interiorsare truly memorable’.

The fact that we have both a wide range of standard products and the capability to produce bespokefeatures meant that we could really push the limits when developing the lighting schemes for ZAAPand Sukhothai. Our client set the bar very high and we are delighted to have played our part indelivering a one of a kind dining experience for two wonderful brands.’

Page 8: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS MAGAZINE - Amazon S3s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/northern-lights-assets/magazines/1183/enlightened_issue_11...SUKHOTHAI 4 THE FINEST THAI CUISINE Serving classic

When I called Northern Lights for the first time in late2013 – having been backed into a bit of a corner relighting and timescales – I was for a while completelythrown. ‘Was this too good to be true?’ I asked myself.

Paul Harrison of Northern Lights said he would comeand see us to discuss our project, provide some lightingdesigns, work through the interior scheme with us, andadvise us of what would work and then provide a quote. “How much will that cost,” I asked. “Nothing” was thereply, “it is all included in the cost of the lights, if youproceed.”

We arranged a meeting for the following week.

Expectations of success were not high with either me ormy clients. I had thought I would be spending the rest ofthe week after the meeting trolling the internet, lookingfor light fittings that would cost my client a small fortuneand be not really what was required.

Three years later and with five projects under our belttogether, Northern lights has helped Sukhothai up itsgame to be the best Thai Food restaurant group inLeeds and Yorkshire. And making a reality the vision ofbringing ‘the streets of Bangkok’ to Leeds andNottingham a reality through ZAAP Thai Street foodrestaurants. It is safe to say that Northern Lights is ourdefault lighting supplier for the future projects we areplanning now.

From our initial design meetings through to deliveryNorthern Lights is with us all the way. The expertise and‘can do’ attitude is a real tonic to a designer.

I am sure out of corner of my eye I can see Paul wincewhen I go through the concept scheme. However, true toform, he does not show it when I turn to him to discusslighting. “Yes” is always his answer to the question of“can we do this” and he is always happy to add a littleflavour of his own.

Along with the attention to detail and the technicaldesign backup, this ensures that we get what we need tomake the restaurants a real success. Lighting is one ofthe most important elements of a restaurant, you onlyhave to dine out at a Sukhothai or a ZAAP restaurant tosee the full effect lighting has.

For example, ZAAP Nottingham would not be what it is,with its train and station, if we had not had the eye fordetail provided by Northern Lights, providing lightfittings that sit just right. The overall effect makes it aone of a kind dining experience.

It is hard for HDP Ltd to find suppliers of the same mindset as we have. A small architectural and interior designpractice, priding ourselves on providing an honest andunique approach to design to ensure the client receivesthe best service. Thankfully those suppliers are outthere, it just needs a little bit of effort to find them.Northern lights is one of them and I would highlyrecommend them to anyone.

THE ST. REGIS DUBAI GRAND CHANDELIER:

SEVEN TIERS WITH THE LARGEST RING ATFOUR METERS IN DIAMETER. MORETHAN 1200 PIECES OF HAND-CUTCRYSTAL COMPLEMENTED BY ANEXQUISITE CHAMPAGNE GOLD FINISH.114 ENERGY-SAVING CANDLE LAMPSSPARKLE AT ITS CENTRE. WE WANTED TO CREATE SOMETHING WHICH WOULDCAPTURE THE SPIRIT AND THESPLENDOUR OF THE ST. REGIS: FINEDETAILS DEEPLY ROOTED IN A RICH AND GLAMOROUS HISTORY.

HERE IS A GLIMPSE OF THEDEVELOPMENT PROCESS BEHIND THISMASTERPIECE…..

THE INSIDE STORY

The St. Regis is Starwood’s ultra-luxury sophisticated star-ladenbrand.  Since the first St. Regis was opened in New York City in 1904, the lobby of the hotel has always been its signature, featuring astriking grand staircase and a fabulous chandelier. Continuing thistradition in Dubai, the hotel designer and operator needed a trulydazzling feature to hang above the magnificent double staircase. Thestyle of the chandelier had to be a key component of the hotel’s Frenchbeaux-arts architecture and neo-classical interiors - and having seenour large-scale installations at various venues across the Middle East, the designers therefore decided to contact Northern Lights through ouragent in the region, Vann FID.

After receiving the design brief and mood board, our designers used 2Ddesign software to visualise the concept and very quickly analysed theaesthetic and structural requirements of the fitting. The first challengewas to ensure that the integrity of the design vision was maintainedwhilst delivering a feasible engineering and production project.

Page 11: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS MAGAZINE - Amazon S3s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/northern-lights-assets/magazines/1183/enlightened_issue_11...SUKHOTHAI 4 THE FINEST THAI CUISINE Serving classic

‘We decided to use metal box sections to manufacture the ring as this made it possible to channelthe wiring for the lamps’, said Graham Westfield, Technical Draughtsman at Northern Lights. ‘Eachbox section was rolled to the correct sizes and then welded to a middle disc which was secured tothe central column. We had to laser cut the discs to ensure their accuracy and consistency. A thinrolled panel was riveted to the inside of the box sections after wiring, delivering a smooth result.’

With the total weight close to one tonne, it was vital to have a carefully considered and calculatedsupport system. Our designer opted for a dual suspension mechanism to carry the weight. A 30mmround steel thread through the central column allowed a strong connection to the ceiling plate. Thesupport for the largest three rings was reinforced by additional metal rods.

To complement the magnificent double staircase, the chandelier had to be finished in a matchinggold finish. We powder-coated the metal in gold and our skilled craftsman hand-applied the goldleaf paint to deliver the perfect match.

After a full assembly pre-delivery test at our Chesterfield factory, the chandelier was transported toDubai with all parts labelled and the packing case containing detailed installation instructions.

Since The St. Regis Dubai opened its doors in November 2015, the chandelier has quickly becomea major conversation piece. Catriona Gaffney, Public Relations Manager of the hotel said ‘It is a greattalking point and we receive a lot of enquires about it!’

So the next time you go to Dubai, go into the lobby of the St. Regis and admire the staircase–then look up!

BE INSPIRED... NORTHERN LIGHTS’ TAKE ONINTERIOR TRENDS AND NEWPRODUCT DESIGNS

RICH METALLIC TONESBrass has been resurgent in recent times.Dulux, for example, selected the rich andmetallic tones of ‘Cherished Gold’ as its paintcolour of the year. Interior designers havebeen really creative with metal accents, usingthem for all aspects of interior schemes. Fromwallpaper to storage solutions, there is a shifttowards using more brushed and burnishedfinishes, these more subtle tones evoking asense of calm, comfort - and understatedluxury.

Featuring angular metal frames in a polishedbrass finish, the Northern Lights NE534 tablelamp is a statement piece with a cleancontemporary appeal. The rich and delicatefinish enhances the elegance of the opengeometric base, adding a touch of luxury andsophistication to any scheme.

RICH METALLIC TONES, SIMPLE YET THOUGHTFUL DESIGNS AND A MODERN INTERPRETATION OF RETRO STYLES HAVE BEENTHE GUIDING PRINCIPLES BEHIND NORTHERN LIGHTS’ RECENT NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTS. MANY OF THESE WERE FIRST REVEALED AT THE SLEEP EVENT LAST YEAR – THIS IS THE STORY BEHIND THEM.

Page 13: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS MAGAZINE - Amazon S3s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/northern-lights-assets/magazines/1183/enlightened_issue_11...SUKHOTHAI 4 THE FINEST THAI CUISINE Serving classic

Featuring a metal framework in distressed blackened steel withlaser-cut inlays in copper and brass, Northern Lights’ NE563table lamp and NE561 floor lamps were designed to bring asubtle warmth to any space. They will complement an earthycolour scheme or add a strong accent to a pastel palette.

The metallic elements were hand-finished by our skilledcraftsmen with the inlay panels taking inspiration fromtraditional motifs, resulting in a range that is stylish, beautifuland (maybe) even a little playful!

SIMPLE AND MINIMALIST‘Less is more!’ the sentiment has never been moreresonant, with a whole new generation of designersadopting a minimalist approach to interior schemes. With its ability to dictate the mood, lighting addsthat element of drama to a minimalist designscheme which could so easily be lost.

Northern Lights’ ceiling light NB747 is a goodexample. The ceiling light features a simple metalcylinder suspended on a black braided flex. Inaddition to chrome, the standard range alsoincludes an earthy antique bronze or polished brassfinish. Hung individually or in a group, thedistinctive finish injects an instant vibrancy. With theLED light source placed at the end of the cylinder,it also generates a soft and focused pool of lightwhen switched on, transforming the ambience fromcalm and crisp to warm and welcoming.

The matching wall light NA534 is a bedroom tasklight, specially designed for hotels. The adjustableLED head provides light that is simple yet multi-directional, whilst the discreet, delicate finishingdetails show the inherent quality of the fitting.

We have always considered that our role as a decorative lighting designer andmanufacturer is to use our design and engineering expertise to facilitate designers’projects, making design ideas real. We do this by investing in our design andproduction capabilities to ensure that we can meet bespoke requirements and also bydeveloping product ranges that are current, innovative and practical.

RETRO AND MODERNWith LPs, CDs and (yes) even cassette sales on theincrease, society seems to have gone retro all of a sudden and interiors are reflecting this.Designers are drawing on iconic styles from pastdecades and then adding contemporary elementsto create unique products and schemes.

In recent years lighting design has also followedthis trend with cages, exposed filament lamps andindustrial spun shades dominating the restaurantscene.

The Northern Lights table lamp NE565incorporates a half-sphere spun shade and curvedlamp base. While the classic retro shape remainsthe same, the painted white and chrome finishadds a modern touch to a familiar look. Justimagine placing the lamp next to a record player inthe corner of a hotel lobby - the nostalgia wouldbe palpable!

Wall light NA536 is another example of mixing theold and the new. The classic spun shade is finishedin painted black with contrasting polished brassdetails, perfect for a boutique hotel.

INTRODUCING...A SEAMLESS BLEND OF SCULPTURAL FORMSAND WARM NATURAL MATERIALS GIVES THERANGE A DISTINCTIVE STRIKING PRESENCE.Juno is a range of profiled fittings, constructed from timberfins and arranged in concentric linear arrays. Its aesthetic is of the moment and has an unusual warmth enhanced by theuse of natural materials. The drama of the collection is createdas light from a decorative filament lamp disperses through thefitting’s architecture, generating intriguing patterns of lightand shadow.

Juno took a while to develop and it was some time before weachieved the perfect balance – but when we saw the finalresult, we knew we had something special.

The angular design has a more sculptural presence with clean, defined lines. The curved version has a subtle soft silhouettewhich gives a natural organic feel – things you might expectfrom something made from wood.

The angular and the curved work well apart - yet sublimely well together.

The Juno range includes pendants, table and floor lamps. For more information and design options, please visitwww.northern-lights.co.uk/article/introducing-juno. As standard we use real wood veneers which can be stained to a variety of colours.

Remember, as with manyother Northern Lights’products, items from theJuno range can betailored to differentdesigns. So if you wouldlike to try out otherfinishes orconfigurations, please donot hesitate to ask.

BEHIND THE SCENES:ACHIEVING THE (NEARLY) IMPOSSIBLE WITH OUR CNC MACHINEACHIEVING THE (NEARLY) IMPOSSIBLE IS A DAY TO DAYFACT OF LIFE AT NORTHERN LIGHTS.

FOR EXAMPLE WHEN WE ARE ASKED TO MAKE SAMPLES ORDEVELOP PROTOTYPES, SPEED IS USUALLY OF THEESSENCE. THE SAMPLE NEEDS TO BE SIGNED OFF‘TOMORROW’, THE PROJECT TO BE DELIVERED ‘NEXT WEEK’.

THAT IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS NORTHERN LIGHTSHAS INVESTED IN CNC TECHNOLOGY - IT IS QUICK, IT CUTSAND SHAPES WOOD OR PLASTICS AND ALLOWS A VERYSPEEDY AND PRECISE TURNAROUND ON EVEN THE MOSTCOMPLEX DESIGNS. IT HELPS US ACHIEVE THE (NEARLY)IMPOSSIBLE.

Our CNC router is specially designed to process plastic and wood-based sheetmaterials such as timber, MDF, plywood and chipboard. The process starts whenour product designers create CAD drawings. David Burns, our specialist CNCRouter operator, then converts the drawing to a special CNC machineprogramme – normally called G-Code. ‘The codes feed all information to therouter and control the position, speed and movement of the machine.’ Davidexplains, ‘For complex shapes, we will run a test cut to ensure theprogramming is absolutely accurate.’

Before the router starts cutting, the integrated vacuum pump creates an air-tight seal around the operating area to ensure that the cutting head movessmoothly on the sheet material.

Page 21: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS MAGAZINE - Amazon S3s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/northern-lights-assets/magazines/1183/enlightened_issue_11...SUKHOTHAI 4 THE FINEST THAI CUISINE Serving classic

ENLIGHTENED 21

The advantage of the CNC router is that the process is very precise and canrepeat in exactly the same pattern over and over again. Our machine’s platformcan accommodate sheet material as large as 2.5m X 1.3m and cuts a preciseshape to a tolerance of plus or minus 0.2mm. With more than 50 differentcutters, it can process an almost infinite number of shapes.

‘This gives us a particular edge, not only when wehave to deliver samples quickly, but also in terms ofquality and turnaround time when delivering tomajor brand roll-outs, - Costa Coffee would be agood example’

At Northern Lights we believe in the flexibility that in-house productionfacilities can bring. In a recent customer survey we found that 95% of ourcustomers said that they valued Northern Lights’ extensive UK productioncapabilities.

That is why we keep investing in new technology and machinery. Combined withour artisan skills, we have the perfect formula to achieve the (nearly)impossible!

Our recent success in the export market not only saw us wintwo top accolades in the East Midlands Chamber ofCommerce Business Awards, but also brought us to theattention of NatWest’s marketing department. As alongstanding customer of theirs, the bank approached us tosee if we were interested in working with them to produce acase study film about how we had not only secured moreinternational contracts, but also how we had managed thecomplications of export finance.

It was an interesting and memorable day. The film managedto capture the spirit of the business through some wonderfulfootage. Our MD Paul Wade talked about how we hadappointed agents abroad and how they had beaten offglobal competition to produce record results. The nub of thefilm was how NatWest had helped us with the financialpracticalities, including the negotiation of fair and low riskpayment terms.

Paul Wheelwright, International Trade Director from NatWest, said:

‘Working together, we created a ‘blueprint’for payment terms and conditions that issimple, fair and avoids the need for lengthynegotiations. This is good for bothNorthern Lights and their customers.’

With a vote of confidence from NatWest (and a very nice filmin the can!), we are well positioned to capitalise on theinternational contacts we have. It is our plan to continue toinvest in design, manufacturing facilities and to extend ourinternational network. We are proud to say that we are betterequipped than ever to provide a flexible and cost effectiveservice to our customers in the UK and all over the world.
