Welcome to the 2016 edition of The Nottingham Independent, created for you by the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID) and delivered to you by It’s in Nottingham.

“It’s in Nottingham is dedicated to unearthing the abundance of Nottingham’s great independents - the shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues for which Nottingham has such an outstanding reputation and that make the city as rich, interesting and unique as its heritage!

So whether you love shopping for quirky clothes or home accessories, enjoy a range of exciting entertainment venues or prefer wining and dining with friends and family in a stylish eatery, sit back and let our independents magazine take you on a journey of discovery.

There’s lots happening in the city this summer to celebrate our great independents. We are once again running our competition to find Nottingham’s Independent Business of the Year which starts on 4th July. This gives you the opportunity to support your favourite independent business by nominating them. Find out more on page 5.

This year we are also organising a special initiative – the Summer Sofa - to highlight the areas of the city where you’ll find most of our great independent businesses. Read on to find out more about the Summer Sofa and where it will be.

Also new for this year, and as the climax of the campaign, there is a special Independents Festival on 1st October with stages being set up at

various locations across the city and entertainment throughout the day. Find out more about this on page 7.

Read on and enjoy all that the city’s independents have to offer.”

As this year’s search for Nottingham’s Independent Business of the Year gets under way, we look back at the diverse range of businesses that made the Top Ten in 2015.

Last year there was a record number of nominations – almost 7,000 in total. After these were counted, those businesses with the highest number of nominations made the final top ten and went through to the judging stage. From these, an overall winner was chosen and two businesses were highly commended.

The competition places the spotlight on the very best that the city has to offer, from specialist shops and high end restaurants to traditional eateries and live music venues. The following great businesses made the final top three last year.

The Treat KitchenNottingham Independent Business of the Year 2015 An independent modern, gourmet confectionery retailer with a store located along Wheeler Gate in Nottingham.

The Cheese ShopHighly commended in 2015 This food haven in Flying Horse Walk supplies the best local, national and international produce available on the market. It specialises in artisan cheeses from around Britain but also offers other culinary delights which can be savoured in their café.

White Rabbit Tea RoomHighly commended in 2015 A relaxing tea room nestled away on Bridlesmith Walk that serves lovely homemade cakes, scones and light lunches. This is the second outlet operated by the business, with the original White Rabbit Tea Room located on Hounds Gate.

Our Other Top Ten Independents 2015

Cookie Shake This popular bar on Upper Parliament Street offers a range of tasty milkshakes by day, whilst at night, the menu changes to cocktails and shots.

Lost City Golf The Lost City Adventure Golf, based in The Cornerhouse, houses two separate 18 hole, rainforest themed, indoor adventure golf courses - Sacred Skull Pass and Temple Trail!

THE TREAT KITCHEN, Independent Business of the year 2015Crowned Nottingham’s Independent Business of the Year in 2015, The Treat Kitchen has enjoyed huge popularity and success since its opening in September 2014.

The business is the creation of confectionery enthusiasts, Martin and Jess Barnett. It offers a scrumptious selection of sweets, treats and chocolates, stocking over 300 different varieties of sweets, chocolate, fudge and sugar free confectionery as well as the fudge being hand made on site in the Nottingham store.

On winning Nottingham’s Independent Business of the Year 2015, Martin Barnett commented; “We are ecstatic and completely bowled over by this award. Supporting independent businesses is massive and we need this sort of exposure to let people know where we are and what we do.”

Vote for your favourite independent Business of 2016!There will be two categories in this year’s competition to find Nottingham’s top independent business: ‘retail and services’ and ‘eating, drinking and things to do’.

You have from 4th to 15th July 2016 to make your nominations and shout about why they’re your favourite. The five businesses in each category with the highest number of nominations will be visited by mystery shoppers who will rate them on criteria including: staff friendliness, customer service, product range, knowledge and individuality. They will then report their findings to an expert judging panel who will choose Nottingham’s Independent Business of the Year 2016 and two highly commended businesses.

SUMMER OFINDEPENDENts

Nottingham is a brilliant place for

independents. We love coming into the city for the great range of

bars and restauants.

Nottingham’s Independents offer a great day out in the city for all. From family adventures to a romantic day out take a look at these suggestions.

FAMILY FUNHead out early and enjoy breakfast at The Pudding Pantry. This quaint eatery has a great breakfast offering from fluffy pancakes

to a traditional full English. An afternoon of fun can then begin at Lost City Adventure Golf where you can putt away the afternoon and, thanks to the licensed bar, mum and dad can even enjoy a glass of wine. The National Videogame Arcade in Hockley offers tons of interactive fun games and their Toast Bar will keep you refreshed whilst you play away.

SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA

Nottingham is definitely the place to shop until you drop. For some designer luxury Gigi Bottega is the place to go with designer

fashion from around the world at your fingertips. If your home is in need of some TLC head to Derby Road where you can find some great interior stores such as Le Chien et Moi and The Danish Homestore. After working up an appetite the curry mile on Maid Marian Way has lots of amazing restaurants including Cumin and the Calcutta Club.

ROMANTIC WANDEREnjoy a romantic day out in the city by starting off with lunch in the lovely surroundings of Spanish inspired Baresca. Then

why not treat her to some jewellery. There are lots of great jewellery shops in the city including Excel and Cathy Stephens. Afterwards head to Broadway cinema to catch a film with your loved one. Then pop across the road to The Rum House for some classy cocktails and maybe even some live music if you catch the right night.

GOURMET’S DELIGHTSpecialist gourmet food is aplenty in Nottingham’s independent stores. The Cheese Shop’s variety of

local cheeses means customers can always find just what they want. Delilah Fine Food’s wide range of hampers, ports and ale means that an afternoon can easily be spent browsing the delights on offer. Finally Chocolate Utopia is the chocolate lover’s haven and you most definitely deserve to treat yourself after a hard day’s shopping.

Nottingham BID was formed in 2012 following the merger of the existing retail and leisure BIDs, and the BID was successfully renewed for a second term in July 2015 with 89% of businesses voting in favour of a second term. A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined geographical area, and the businesses within it opt (via a ballot) to pay an additional amount to provide services that they, as a group of businesses, think would benefit the city.
