Dance With Fate, the winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes in April, was euthanized on Thurs-day after suffering a severe stifle injury during a training accident at Del Mar in the morning. Trainer Peter Eurton announced the news on his Twitter feed Thursday afternoon.

“Words can’t express what we’re feeling right now,” Eurton wrote. “With an extremely heavy heart, we report Dance With Fate was unable to survive his injuries.”

Dance With Fate suffered ruptured ligaments in the accident, which occurred early during Thurs-day’s training hours. The colt reportedly struck the outside rail while galloping, suffering the injury. Eurton consulted with noted veterinarian Wayne McIlwraith on potential treatments before Dance With Fate was euthanized.

Eurton said he was in his barn and did not witness the incident. He was told that Dance With

Fate’s bridle came off and that the horse was loose when stricken. Exercise rider Joe Duran was hospitalized and was undergoing a precautionary MRI at a local hospital, Eurton said.

Dance With Fate was entered for Saturday’s Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, where he was consid-ered a leading candidate. A 3-year-old son of Two Step Salsa, Dance With Fate won 3 of 9 starts and earned $680,050 for Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stable and Ciaglia Racing. He finished second twice in Grade 1 events as a juvenile and also finished second earlier this year in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby, one race prior to the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. In that race, Dance With Fate won by 1 3/4 lengths over subsequent Belmont third-place finisher Medal Count.

Dance With Fate finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby on May 3 in his final start. He was entered for the Belmont Derby in New York on July 5, but did not start after suffering a mild bout with colic the preceding day.

Tonalist vs. Wicked Strong a Dandy matchupBy David Grening

As of Thursday afternoon, it remained unclear if all seven horses entered in Saturday’s Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga would run. However, this much is known: Tonalist and Wicked Strong are running, and the race centers around them.

Tonalist will be making his first start since his 9-1 upset victory in the Belmont Stakes. Wicked Strong, the Grade 1 Wood Memorial winner, also will be making his first start since the Belmont, where he finished in a dead heat for fourth with Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome.

The Jim Dandy, run at 1 1/8 miles, is the local prep for the $1.25 million Travers on Aug. 23. The Jim Dandy has produced the Travers winner in seven of the last nine years.

Five others were entered in the Jim Dandy, including Cousin Stephen and Commanding Curve, the Kentucky Derby runner-up, both of whom were also entered in Friday’s $100,000 Curlin Stakes. Where Cousin Stephen runs is important because he could be the primary speed in the Jim Dandy. Kid Cruz, the Dwyer Stakes winner, is 60-40 to run in the Jim Dandy, trainer Linda Rice said Thursday, with next week’s West Virginia Derby as Plan B. Legend and Ulanbator complete the field.

Tonalist’s accomplishments and versatil-ity give him an edge in the Jim Dandy. He has won three of his last four starts, includ-ing two at 1 1/8 miles off layoffs of 11 weeks and nine weeks.

“I think he’s a nice horse,” said Christo-phe Clement, who trains Tonalist for Robert Evans. “They overcome that kind of thing. The training is not the excuse; he’s got plenty of training going into that race. It’s up to him now.”

Tonalist won the Grade 2 Peter Pan in front-running fashion and the Belmont from a stalking position. So, it makes little differ-ence to Clement whether there is pace in the Jim Dandy.

“I think I’m going to leave it up to Joel,” Clement said, referring to jockey Joel Rosa-rio. “Don’t send him, don’t fight him, let him run his race.”

Jimmy Jerkens is hoping Wicked Strong can run a better race in the Jim Dandy than he did in the Belmont, when he lost position down the backside. To that end, Jerkens is equipping Wicked Strong with blinkers for the first time in a race. He has been train-ing in blinkers for the last few weeks, and on Thursday, he blew out an untimed quarter-

mile through the lane over the Oklahoma training track.

“He might stay a little straighter,” Jerkens said when asked if the blinkers have helped Wicked Strong in his training. “A lot of times, he goes with his head low and cocked to the outside a little bit. He seems to be a little more collected.”

Kelvin Pahal, Wicked Strong’s exercise rider, said the horse is “more focused.”

“He does everything right with the blink-ers,” Pahal said.

Legend is a bit interesting at a potential price. He finished second to Kid Cruz as the favorite in the Dwyer Stakes. His trainer, James Bond, believes he fits with these horses, which is why he skipped Friday’s Curlin to run in here.

“I take nothing away from the Belmont winner and the Wood winner – they’re all great horses – but perhaps the best horse is running in the Haskell, and she’s a filly,” said Bond, referring to Untapable.

KEY CONTENDERS

Tonalist (Last 3 Beyers 100-103-92)

◗ In the last 15 years, only four Belmont Stakes winners have run in the Jim Dandy.

Lemon Drop Kid (1999) and Palace Malice (2013) won the Jim Dandy. Empire Maker (2003) was beaten a nose, and Da’ Tara (2008) was seventh.◗ Tonalist comes into this race off a seven-

week layoff. He won a maiden race off a nine-week layoff and the Grade 2 Peter Pan off an 11-week layoff. Both races were at 1 1/8 miles.

Wicked Strong (Last 3 Beyers 98-99-104)

◗ Won the Wood Memorial and finished third, beaten a half-length, in the Grade 2 Remsen in his only starts at 1 1/8 miles.◗ Trainer Jerkens is 6 for 59 over the last

five years when putting blinkers on a horse for the first time.◗ Jerkens is 1 for 10 in graded stakes at

Saratoga. The win came in the Travers Stakes with Afleet Express, who finished a good third in the Jim Dandy.

Legend (Last 3 Beyers 91-97-82)

◗ Trainer Bond felt that Legend had the worst of the trips when second to Kid Cruz in the Dwyer. “He’s doing everything right,” Bond said. “This is his home base. He’s got a lot of positives for me, and he’s got class.”◗ Son of Tiznow gets to run without ship-

ping for the first time in his six career starts.

Amsterdam distance key for Captain SeriousBy MIke Welsch

With Captain Serious coming off a strong second-place finish going 1 1/16 miles for the first time in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes, trainer Mike Hushion could easily have been tempted to try his lightly raced gelding in Friday’s listed Curlin Stakes. Instead, Hushion opted to wait an extra day and shorten up Captain Serious to 6 1/2 furlongs to face eight other 3-year-olds in the Grade 2, $200,000 Amsterdam Stakes, a highly competitive race that serves as a prelude to Saturday’s main event at Sara-toga, the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes.

Captain Serious won his first three career starts, all against New York-breds, including the seven-furlong Mike Lee Stakes. He then ventured into open company and stretched out in distance for the Dwyer. A son of Successful Appeal, Captain Serious set a pressured early pace, shook well clear in early stretch, but could not withstand the final surge of Kid Cruz, who rallied to a three-quarter-length victory to earn himself a spot in the Curlin.

“It was a very tough beat,” Hushion said of the Dwyer. “I thought it was a done deal at one point. I wasn’t necessarily looking to turn him back in distance, it was just the timing of the race. I don’t think he’s quite ready for the caliber of competition he’d meet going a mile and one-eighth in the Curlin.”

Captain Serious may vie for favoritism in the Amsterdam with Rock Fall, who has won his last two starts by a combined 12 1/2 lengths after finishing far back when making his debut this spring at Gulf-stream Park. Rock Fall actually will be facing lesser competition Saturday in his stakes debut than he has been training up to the race, having served as Palace Malice’s work partner here on both July 7 and 13.

Noble Moon’s starting status remained a question mark after he popped a foot abscess on Monday. Trainer Leah Gyar-mati said that Noble Moon did not go to the track to train on Thursday.

KEY CONTENDERS

Captain Serious (Last 3 Beyers: 91-97-90)

◗ He owns the second-highest Beyer Speed Figure in the field and highest at seven furlongs, the 97 he posted for his gate-to-wire victory in the Mike Lee at Belmont.◗ The gelding is versatile enough to win

on the lead or from a stalking position. “I was very happy to see him get the perfect post position,” trainer Mike Hushion said.

Rock Fall (Last 3 Beyers: 94-103-15)

◗ He posted the highest Beyer Speed Figure in this field, 103, winning his maiden at Belmont at six furlongs on May 11.◗ Trainer Todd Pletcher showed his confi-

dence in Rock Fall by matching him with

Palace Malice for two workouts at Sara-toga, and Rock Fall held his own with the top older handicap horse in the country, without need of urging, on both occasions.◗ Potential drawbacks would be his lack of

experience – only three career starts, none against stakes competition – and the fact he will race beyond six furlongs for the first time.

Coup de Grace (Last 3 Beyers: 95-89-90)

◗ He is versatile, having won at distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile while also showing the ability to overcome adver-sity to win the Grade 3 Bay Shore.◗ Appears to be maintaining his best form

after posting a bullet work at Delaware Park earlier this week. He did the same thing four days prior to winning his first start since joining trainer Larry Jones’s stable.

Crist: Jim Dandy has substance over Haskell’s flashWhat’s the best way to get to the

Grade 1 Travers Stakes – the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy over the Saratoga track, or the richer and usually glitzier Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth?

In recent years, the Haskell has usually been the more compelling race, but the Jim Dandy has been a more success-ful launching pad for Travers winners.

Things could well play out the same way this year. Both races will be renewed this weekend, and each drew good fields with a pair of Grade 1 winners. On Saturday at Sara-toga, Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist and Wood Memorial winner Wicked Strong head a field of seven in the Jim Dandy. Given their connections, it was 1-10 they would end up at Sara-toga instead of Monmouth this week-end. Trainers Christophe Clement (Tonalist) and Jimmy Jerkens (Wicked Strong) are based in New York and run here whenever possible. Also, it would be surprising if both horses fire their very best shots Saturday as opposed to firing merely good ones while getting a Travers prep over the Saratoga track.

(Tonalist and Wicked Strong have met twice before; most recently when running first and fourth in the Belmont, but also when they ran second and fourth, respectively, in a Feb. 22 allowance race at Gulfstream

that might be considered the Key Race of the Year: the victorious Constitu-tion won the Grade 1 Florida Derby in his next start; second-place Tonalist won the Grade 2 Peter Pan and Grade 1 Belmont in his next two; and fourth-place Wicked Strong emerged from a fourth-place finish to win the Wood.)

On Sunday at Monmouth, two of the most talented 3-year-olds in the coun-try – with perhaps more explosive abil-ity than the Jim Dandy runners -- will square off in the Haskell, and both will be trying something new: Unta-pable will be facing males for the first time, and Bayern will be trying to win beyond a mile.

Both have been brilliant. Untapable has won all four of her starts this year, including big-figure romps in the Fair Grounds Oaks (earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 106) and Kentucky Oaks (107), and a 9 1/4-length blowout in the Mother Goose last time out. She has no competition in the 3-year-old filly ranks and thus is taking on the males and trying to join Serena’s Song (1995) and Rachel Alexandra (2009) as the only fillies to win the Haskell.

Bayern is less accomplished but turned in a truly sensational perform-ance last time out on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Making his fifth career start in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop, he dueled for the lead through sizzling fractions of 21.96 and 44.20, and then sprinted away to win by 7 1/2 lengths with seven furlongs in 1:20.75. That was good for a Beyer of 107.

They are the leaders of the 3-year-

old filly and 3-year-old sprinter divi-sions, but unlike Tonalist and Wicked Strong, neither is necessarily on a path to the Travers. This would jibe with the pattern of recent years, when the Haskell has featured some scintillat-ing performances but the Jim Dandy has proved the more productive route to the Travers.

In the last dozen years, no Haskell winner has won the Travers but six Jim Dandy winners have made it the first half of a double with the Travers: Medaglia d’Oro (2002), Flower Alley (2005), Bernardini (2006), Street Sense (2007), Stay Thirsty (2011), and Alpha (2012). Last year’s Travers winner, Will Take Charge, was second in the Jim Dandy. The roll of Haskell winners during that time includes champi-ons such as War Emblem, Big Brown, Rachel Alexandra, and Lookin At Lucky, but you have to go back to Point Given in 2001 to find a Haskell-Travers winner. (The only other two in the last 25 years were Coronado’s Quest in 1998 and Holy Bull in 1994.)

If I could watch only one race this weekend, it would be the Haskell. The ambitious bids by Untapable and Bayern are inherently fascinating, and the prospect of their hooking up down the stretch is exhilarating. Tonalist and Wicked Strong don’t make the blood run as quickly – they should outrun their mild competition while getting useful experience over the track – but the Jim Dandy may well prove, yet again, the better way to get to the Travers winner’s circle.

Hovdey: Grief and thanks hover over shedrowsThe Doug O’Neill stable did not want

to lose its Pennsylvania Derby winner Handsome Mike, but a mix-up put him in the sales ring at Del Mar last Sunday night with a price on his head before the people in charge figured it out.

Peter Miller did not want to lose Stealth Drone, the barn’s first-time starter in the first race Wednesday at Del Mar, and thought an $80,000 claiming price would be enough to discourage takers. It did not, and now Stealth Drone lives with Handsome Mike in the O’Neill shedrow.

As small dramas played out on an attractive stage, claiming rival-ries and auction gaffes give the lazy summer at Del Mar a welcome dash of spice. Miller and O’Neill ended busi-ness on Wednesday tied atop the Del Mar standings with four wins each, boding well for a contentious trainers’ race that will be joined at some point by the muscle-bound barns of John Sadler, Bob Baffert, Jerry Hollendor-fer, and Phil D’Amato.

Still, it’s Del Mar, and everyone is having way too much fun to take things seriously enough. Then comes a morning like Thursday, when the ultimate cost of raising, buying, and racing Thoroughbreds came due once again in the starkest of possible terms.

Dance With Fate, winner of the 2014 Blue Grass and aiming for Saturday’s San Diego Stakes, suffered a fatal injury to his hind leg in a freak acci-dent that occurred during a routine gallop when a piece of tack apparently failed and his rider lost control. News of the accident ricocheted around the sprawling stable area like lightning, bringing forth a communal groan,

and not only because Dance With Fate was one of the most accomplished 3-year-olds on the grounds.

His trainer, Pete Eurton, runs a medium-sized public stable with the class and accessibility that has made him both well liked and well respected. At 56, Eurton has had his share of stakes winners, but Dance With Fate was on his way to being the best he’d ever trained, and the Blue Grass marked the best race Eurton had ever won.

“I feel so bad for the guy,” Miller said later Thursday. “I was at the barn when it happened and saw them take the horse off in the ambulance. I’ve been there, and it’s the worst feeling in the world. There’s no good way to deliver that kind of news.”

Dance With Fate raced for the part-nership of Sharon Alesia, Joseph Ciaglia, and the Bran Jam Stable of Michael Mellen.

“You’ve just got to shoot from the heart,” O’Neill said. “Your veteran owners will be saddened and disap-pointed, but they feel your pain. Every owner will tell their tax guy it’s a busi-ness first, then secondly it’s the love of the animal. But in this scenario the love of the animal goes right past everything else.”

When a good horse like Dance With Fate goes down like this, for no appar-ent reason other than blind, stupid luck, trainers everywhere walk up to the stall of a stable star and just stare, wishing away the clouds of evil fortune. They know, if they are honest, that they’re lucky to have such horses in their care.

In Miller’s case, he looks forward to every day Unbridled Command wakes up ready to roll. The well-traveled 5-year-old, once the winner of the Hollywood Derby, has landed in Mill-er’s barn after frustrating sojourns abroad and is on his way back now

from a soft-tissue injury. His fifth-place finish in the Eddie Read Stakes last weekend did nothing to discour-age the trainer.

“Beaten five lengths in a fast time,” Miller noted. “I’ve got to think that puts him right where he needs to be for the Del Mar Handicap later in the meet.”

O’Neill’s best runner was dozing in a corner of his stall Thursday morning when Dance With Fate was injured. Goldencents, winner of the 2013 Santa Anita Derby and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, has not appeared in public since giving Palace Malice all he could handle in the Metropolitan Mile on Belmont Stakes Day, but on Sunday it will be back to work in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at 6 furlongs, in which he finished second last year to subsequent sprint champion Points Offthebench.

“He’s a man now and he knows it,” said Leandro Mora, O’Neill’s assist-ant. “I still can’t believe he lost in New York. This is his last season to race, so hopefully he will get a chance to show everyone what he can do at least a few more times.”

As Mora headed into the barn to prepare Goldencents for a three-furlong Crosby blowout, O’Neill let his thoughts stray once more to Dance With Fate.

“I saw Pete Eurton a couple times this morning after it happened,” O’Neill said. “He was kind of teary-eyed, which is understandable, and I could tell he was wanting to talk with somebody. But what can you say?”

Nothing, or at least nothing that makes a difference. I once asked trainer Len Dorfman, long retired now, how long it took him to get over the death of a horse to whom the barn had become emotionally attached, some 30 years before. Dorfman’s reply:

“I’ll let you know when I do.”
