the dogs in this year’s Dandy Dogscompetition.

Lines are open so you can startvoting by phone or text. For the firstround, lines close just before midnighton Wednesday, June 9. To vote byphone, you need the four digitreference number below the dog youwant to vote for and call 0901 3073210. Calls cost 50p from a BTlandline. Other networks will vary andcalls from mobiles will costconsiderably more.

If you are voting by text, type thekeyword DANDY, followed by a space,and then the four digit number of thechosen dog and send to 83070.

For example, if you wish to vote fordog number 0003 text DANDY 0003and send to 83070. Texts cost 50pplus standard network rates. If youdon’t wish to receive details on anyother products and services then textthe word EXIT at the end of yourmessage. Votes received after theclosing date will not be counted butyou may still be charged.

The final 50 will be announced inthe Chronicle next Friday when votelines will open again to find the final30. The final 30 will be announced onFriday June 18 when lines will be openagain in order to get the final tendogs. Owners of the top ten will beinvited to bring their dogs to the finalat Barnsley Metrodome on MondayJune 28. A panel of judges will decideon the winner.

Chronicle sales manager John Bartonsays: “The Dandy Dogs competitioncontinues to be successful year afteryear and we have again received ahigh number of entries. I’m lookingforward to the dog show at the final.”

He has lined up a host of top prizesfrom Vets4Pets, Stan Plus Stan 2photographers and The Mall.

Main competition sponsor isVets4Pets of Wilthorpe Road, who isoffering the winning dog £500 ofveterinary treatment. Nine runners upwill receive a single boostervaccination.

Stan Plus Stan 2 professionalphotographers of Shambles Street isgiving the winner a session and 12x10photograph worth £170. The runnersup will also get a session plus aframed 5x7 picture worth £100 each.The Mall Barnsley is giving the winnera £100 Mall gift card and a £50 giftcard for two runners up.

Barnsley Metrodome is providing thevenue for the final on Monday June 28and Barnsley Animal Rescue Charitywill put on a mini-dog show.

Why Max is in needof a loving home

NOT all dogs like those featuredin this supplement have lovinghappy homes.

Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity(BARC) which will have a displayat the Dandy Dogs competitionfinal has plenty of dogs that have

either been abandoned or ill-treated looking for new homes.

The younger ones get re-homed quickly but the olderdogs like Max, thought to beaged around five, are oftenoverlooked.

German Shepherd cross Maxhas been at BARC twice. The firsttime was after his owners tried todrown him in the canal and hehas been returned after anotherhome didn’t work out.

Carol Benson, area manager atBARC said: “He gets overlookedbecause he is older and biggerbut he is very placid natured anddoesn’t move about too much.He would be suitable forsomeone at home all day, maybesomeone older where he can justpotter and sit at their feet.

“We think he had some kind oftumour and although we are notsure we think that is why he theydumped him in the canal. Hewas in a right mess when hecame in.”
