18TH MACCABIAH GAMESOn July 13, 2009, Team USA’s 900+ members, accompanied by scores of supporters and organizers, marched into Ramat Gan Stadium in Israel for theOpening Ceremonies of the 18th Maccabiah Games. The announcer told the 50,000 people in the stands — and the hundreds of thousands of homeviewers — that Team USA was the largest-ever North American athleticcontingent in the history of sports!!

Larger, though, is not necessarily better. It is better only if it is matched bythe quality of athletes and by the execution of the myriad details involved inbringing 88 teams. And indeed, the careful selection out of 2,600 applicants

and the meticulous implementation of our end of the programs by over 130 USA organizers, management staff, and medical team — most of whom are volunteers — made it right.

From the feedback received from many of the participants, we know that our athletes cameaway from this 23-day experience with a renewed perspective on Israel and its centrality to Jewishlife, and with a renewed sense of their own identity as Jews. At our orientation meeting in Israelon July 4th I asked them to ponder the question: “What does it mean to you to be a Jewish athlete competing on the worldstage in the year 2009?” I asked them to contemplate this question during the next six days of Pre-camp (our period ofdiscovery preceding the Games) as they traveled around Israel, studied its many historical sites, experienced unique activities, and breathed in some holy dust in the process.

It has been an incredible honor to serve as President of Maccabi USA. During the last eight years we faced manychallenges, but working together, we created an impressive record of growth, success and accomplishment.

We have sent Teams to the 17th Maccabiah, the Maccabi Australia International Games, the PanAmerican Maccabi Games in Chile and Buenos Aires, the European Maccabi Games in Rome and to the 18th“Chai” Maccabiah — certainly the biggest and perhaps the best Maccabiah ever held. Approximately 2,700Team members and 1,200 Mission members and supporters have participated in these programs.

We’ve increased our membership and donor bases, grown our Endowment Fund and strengthened thename recognition of Maccabi USA and the Maccabiah. We’ve created a fantastic website, redesigned our

newsletter and improved our communication with our Board and supporters. We’ve held numerous golf, poker and bridgetournaments, memorable Tribute Brunches and a fantastic 60th Anniversary Gala. We’ve provided financial support toMaccabi World Union and the Maccabiah Games, strengthened our partnership with the JCC Association and the JCC MaccabiGames and continue our strong relationships with the Israel Olympic Committee, Wingate Institute, the International JewishSports Hall of Fame and the Israel Sport Center for the Disabled.

The credit for our success goes to our fantastic volunteer leadership who give selflessly of their time and talents and to ourprofessional staff who support all our efforts. Thank You to our elected Officers, members of our Executive Committee,Chairs of our projects and programs and to our Board of Directors. Your dedication has changed lives. Thank You to ourEndowers, members of our Sponsor our Athletes program and our donors whose generosity make our programs possible.Thank You to our professional staff who support the efforts of our volunteers with energy and dedication.
