In 2000, a crash during an IndyCar test session atWalt Disney World Speedway ended SamSchmidt’s racing career, but incredible technologi-cal advances have allowed Schmidt to return tothe track in a specially designed semiautonom-ous car.

Schmidt, a quadriplegic, remained in racing andstarted Sam Schmidt Motorsports after his acci-dent. In 2011 a Schmidt-owned car won the Indy500.

After practice on Pole Day, Schmidt took to thetrack in a 2014 Corvette C7 Stingray that is oper-ated entirely by his own head movements.Schmidt can control the steering and accelerationof the car by tilting his head in small increments.Schmidt said earlier this month that he hopes toaverage over 100 miles-per-hour around IMS.

On receiving the Angelo Angelolopous Sports-manship Award' from the American Auto RacingWriters and Broadcasters Association annual Indy500 Breakfast Saturday morning, Sam said thathe did run 100 mph.

"It is an honor to be selected by John and theGorsline Company for this award," said Katz. "Johnhas been associated with the finest and best indi-viduals in racing for many years and to be selectedby him for this is truly amazing."

Said Gorsline, "Howard Katz is one of those peoplewho enjoys the laid-back atmosphere of competingin vintage and historic cars yet is very competitive. He is also a gentleman on the track and in the pad-dock and represents the best qualities of sports-manship."

AARWBA’s 2012 Rising Star a Winner!Amy Ruman captures flag-to-flag Trans-Am victory

at New Jersey Motorsports Park

Amy Ruman, in the #23 McNichols Chevrolet Corvette, startedon pole position at New Jersey Motorsports for theRacingJunk.com 100, Round 5 of the 2014 Trans Am Champi-onship, a position that she held for the duration of the race, despite multiple challenges from defending Champion DougPeterson. The win, her first since the 2012 season, places Ru-man within 2 points of Peterson for the Championship leadgoing into the rest of the 2014 season.

“This week has been all about myteam, my mom, my dad, everyonethat works so hard for me, McNich-ols, everyone that lets me do what Ido,” said Ruman. “I can’t thank ev-eryone enough for all the effort theygive me week in and week out. Itfelt great to start on pole and leadthe race, back-to-back wins in NewJersey is pretty cool too—so Iguess I really like Thunderbolt trackhere.”

The race began with Ruman onpole with Peterson, in the #87 3Dimensional.com ChevroletCorvette, alongside and the #59 Derhaag Motorsports Chev-rolet Corvette of Simon Gregg in third position.

Ruman was quick to build a lead during the early laps; but itwas Jim McAleese, starting fourth in the #03 Chevrolet Cor-vette who put on a show during the early laps, shooting upthrough the field, passing both Gregg and Peterson on therestart on lap 9, the consequence of a brief full course yellowduring the start of the race.

Ruman was able to fend off Peterson until the checkered flag,in turn capturing her second consecutive victory at New Jer-sey Motorsports Park, despite finishing the last eight laps ofthe race without power steering.

“It was an endurance race,” said Ruman. “I knew Petersonwould be there when we got the yellow, he was probably be-ing conservative with his tires; I was trying to be as conserva-tive as possible with mine too. At the end, I knew he’d begunning for me; I didn’t anticipate the power steering prob-lems. I was ok on the straights; but in the corners he caughtup with me, so I had to get back on the gas as fast as I could.I don’t know how much longer I could have done that; but youknow, I’ve been working out, so we’re good!”
