Greetings Calafia! We hope you’ve all been enjoying the slower

pace this summer! We’re starting to look towards the fall andprepare for one of thebusier seasons inCalafia, with anumber of localevents and otheractivities. Wewant to offerour sincerethanks toDuchess Karaand Duke Patrickfor organizing theIron Brigade ComicCon Demo, and to every-one who staffed the boothor fought. They were able toreach out to a lot of interested folks, some of whom we will hopefully see again very soon!

We’re kicking off August with our annual Arts in the Park/Brigade Practice Demo on August 2nd. This is a truly fantastic way to showcase all that Calafia has to offer, and we would like to encourage everyone who is able to attend to do so, and bring friends! This event is less formal than a tourna-ment and will have lots of amazing arts, combat, and activities on display. Come and join us for a nice Sunday in the park, back at our old stomping grounds, Allied Gardens Rec Center. Thank you so much to Euginia, Grainne, Valrik, and Tiberius for your efforts to put this awesome event together!

In addition to many fun events on the horizon, we also have several important business items coming up. First and foremost, it is coming near to the time when we will start working on our officer corps for next year. Many of our Baronial officers will be stepping down at Anniversary in November, and will be looking for replacements or deputies. If you are interested in learning more about what each officer position entails and what duties would

be involved, please don’t hesitate to speak with that officer or ask THL Parlane or us. Becoming a

deputy does not mean you are agreeing to take over the job

– it simply means thatyou would like to

learn more about the position. We would love to

see some new folks getting

more involved in officer roles,

so don’t be shy! We will be accep-

ting nominations through September,

and polling at the September Populace

meeting.

Calafia Anniversary also means the changing of the Baronial Court and Guard. We are looking for folks who would be interested in joining us on our court. If you think this might be something you would enjoy, or is something you would like to learn a little more about, please let us or Lady Saran know. The more the merrier! It’s a great way to get to know more people in Calafia and learn more about how things work behind the scenes.

We’re looking forward to getting back into the swing of events, and getting to spend more time with the wonderful people of Calafia!

In service,

Guy Rand and Muirrenn3

Did you know? The Crown Prints is the official news-letter for the Kingdom of Caid. Like baronial news-letters, kingdom newsletters are required for a kingdom to maintain its status. The purpose of the newsletter is to: 1) provide an official means of announcing upcoming events; and 2) serve as a historical document for the happenings of the kingdom. If you look back on previous Crown Prints publications you will find information like when certain events or anniversaries have taken place, or who was in office during which years. As long as the information submitted is accurate, then so will be this historical document.

Lately, I have received a number of submissions for events that are not quite complete, which poses a problem for labeling the event as “Official.” In case you are running an event sometime in the future, I decided I’d outline a few things that may or may not be known.

From the Kingdom Chronicler Handbook: “Event notices must be published [in a kingdom newsletter] for the events at which any one of the following will take place:

• Crown and Coronet Tournaments• Coronations and Investitures• Appointment of Kingdom or Principality Officers• Presentation of awards and titles• Proclamation of law• Establishment or advancement of branches”

If you are an autocrat and you intend for any of these things to occur at your event, you need to make it official and publish the announcement in the Crown Prints, not just your local newsletter. The local news-letter is a great place for summaries of events, sharing recipes, demo announcements, and schedules of territorial meetings (business meetings, A&S meetings, fighter practices). They will make those meetings official and covered by insurance, but for the business listed in the bullet points above, the CP is the place you want to be. FYI: this includes members stepping up into an office.

There are specific requirements for what needs to be in an event submission that is sent to the Crown Prints:

First, make sure the event is officially scheduled on the Kingdom Calendar – this usually happens a year in advance by the seneschal of your territory.

Second, submit your announcement in .doc, .txt, or .rtf formats. Keep formatting to a minimum; it is bound to change when published. When writing your notices, aim for 300-400 words for local event notices or 500 to

700 words for kingdom event notices. Space is limited! NOTE: The Chronicler reserves the right to edit all submissions for space purposes. If you submit early enough, then event notices will run both the month of as well as the month prior to the event date.

A complete event announcement consists of the following required content (i.e., the information that make your event “official”):

Name/Title of the Event• Date of the event (day, month, and legal year)• Sponsoring group name• Site location (name, street #, town, & ZIP code)• Time the site opens and closes (the o’clock times)• Site fee and non-member surcharge fee along

with the statement: “Make checks payable to SCA Inc./(Group name)”. If there is no site fee, please state “There is no site fee for this event.”

• Event Steward’s name (both Society and modern - note: modern name will not be published without permission)

• Event Steward’s [generic] email address . Also include phone number and address, though these will not be published without permission.

Optional content (unofficial but very helpful):

• Event info and other important details (yes, this is actually optional).

• Merchant information• Directions to the site

Submission Deadline: All submissions must be received by midnight on the last day of the month, two months before the issue date. For example for a March issue, submissions should be sent by Midnight of January 31st

Once you’ve written everything up, email your submission to [email protected] and [email protected]. Be sure to copy your local seneschal on your submission email so he knows that you are doing your job. If you do not personally hear from either Crown Prints or the Online Calendar within 48 hours after submitting the event form, please contact those offices immediately to avoid losing "Official Event Status" for your local event.

And that’s it! I hope this was clear, but if not, I can always be reached at [email protected] to answer any questions and help you out.

For the Dream,

THL A’isha al-RaqqasaKingdom Chronicler

A Special Announcement from Caid Kingdom Chronicler A’isha al-Raqqsa

It’s not “official” until it’s published in the Kingdom newsletter. In this article, The Honorable Lady A’ishaexplains the process for submitting your event announcement to the Crown Prints.

From the ChatelaineThe Chatelaine is here as your first stop to get your

questions answered. If you are new to the SCA and have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Chatelaine. I’m no stranger to what it was like to walk into this organization with an overwhelming desire to become involved in all of the wonderful things the SCA has to offer, and at the same time having no idea about where to get started.

Want to know where to go to learn a particular skill or art form? We have guilds for that! Interested in learning archery or one of the fighting disciplines? I can point you in the right direction! If I don’t know the answer to your question, I will find someone who does. And if you need a place to sit and watch all of the action at the next Baronial event, feel free to make yourself at home in the Arts and Sciences / Newcomer’s pavilion. Everyone is welcome! We also have loaner garb available for you to borrow so you have something to wear at any of our events.

If you have any questions, please email me

at [email protected].

Council Minutes, cont.EventsCalafia Anniversary:

A check request was submitted for $200, payable to San Diego Elks No. 168. This is the deposit for the feast hall and kitchen.

Lord Ketill hopes to have the event announcement in the September issues of the Crown Prints and the Serpent’s Tongue, but it will not be a tragedy if the announcement is delayed until the October issues of both.

We are planning archery; throwing sharp objects; hitting people with sticks and rubber swords; and poking people with wire.

Lord Ketill is looking for someone to prepare the feast and is looking for someone who will oversee the feast in terms of reservations, distribution of feast tokens, securing the required number of servers, overseeing hall setup and tear-down, as well as cleanup in the kitchen. All of this does not have to be the same person; many hands/light work and all that.

The event is still going to be at El Monte Park in Lakeside, but we will not beholding Court where we have in the past. It will be in the other ramada that is between the eric and archery area.

There will be no merchants this year; however, there is talk of trying to have a rummage sale – but that is still very much up in the air.

And finally: the Canton of Pol na Gainmhe will be preparing a lunch for the populace!

Calafia Equestrian:

I will require money for the arena rental and need to activate the equestrian insurance. Once we talk to the Equestrian Guild leader, I will have a dollar figure. Everything otherwise is proceeding on schedule.

EQ Tourney will consist of five rounds to include a pageantry portion. There will be a jousting demonstration. We are also adding a medieval flea market and a donation lunch, all to be determined.

Arts in the Park:We have some reservations for space. It sees that we

will not have the parking lot available, so we will have to have the entrance to the demo at the opposite end of the usual set-up. Grainne and Euginia have been working on the set-up and organization of the reserved spaces. We will have a mock feast set-up that is being organized by Seraphina and will give attendees a chance

Our July meeting on July 27th will feature a class on the Birka Stitch, taught by Mistress Ellyn. This will also be our Three-Year Anniversary, so we’ll have a little celebration of that, too.

In August, we will have our annual planning meeting to discuss projects for our next year and how the Guild might participate in upcoming events.

Baronial Subgroup ReportsCanton of Poll na Gainmhe (Mistress Lasairona):

Due to most of the membership attending various wars, the Canton went dark for the month of June. We will be meeting again at our regular time in July.

Canton of Tanwayour (Lord Ketill):

Monthly Tanwayour A&S night at Rancho San Diego Library was attended by five people, two of whom are newbies. They learned wire weaving from Lady Agnes and were very happy to leave with a bracelet each.

Warrants were required for our officers and have been submitted.

Tanwayour Anniversary is set for August 8, with Kettilrauðskeggr as Autocrat.

Council Minutes, cont.Arts in the Park (cont.):

to see what a feast might be like. Lady Euginia made a flyer that she is planning to post around town this week.

We have several activities planned for the day:

• A mock feast set-up being organized by Seraphinathat will give attendees a chance to see what an SCA feast is like.

• The Bake-inator is hosting a “Pickle-off” which will be a fun addition.

• We have a few folks planning individual demos during the event.

Grainne and I would like to employ a couple of concierges. It would be their job to be on the lookout for newcomers and give them a tour of the event. Our populace would still be able to speak with newcomers, but the concierges would move around and be able to do a walking tour of the Guilds and individual demos at the event.

We have had some grumblings about Iron Brigade folks not getting to meet with newcomers and some issues with where they are located, so we have been trying to address those as best as possible.

Leodamus of Thebes:

Stewards would like to request $375 for the event, including $125 as an advance to Hearth and Cauldron for lunch. We will also need change for the cash box.

Everything is moving ahead smoothly! Isolde is locking down prizes for the fighting and the team games.

23

Leodamus of Thebes (cont.):

We have a nice selection of activities planned:

• Team challenges for all attendees!• Games!• Costume contest!• Lunch!• Snow cones!

We will need someone to haul the trailer, eric layout (due to the weird tree in the middle of the site), cardboard boxes large enough for a person to sit in, tarps, paint, scissors for the chariot contest (I can provide but if anyone already has some... Hooray!), prize donations for team games.

Tanwayour Anniversary:

Event will be held on August 8 at Sweetwater Summit Park; gates open at 9:30 AM; $5 member price; EQ Guild doing lunch.

Old Business:Polling of officers will commence next month with

nominations. Vote will be held in September.

New Business:Going forward there will be no office of the

chirurgeonate. If you still wish to provide first aid services, you do so at your own risk. Please read the California Good Samaritan Law.

Going forward, there will be a team of three secretaries including Chris Denneson, Kelly Rochester, and Ellyn of Tanwayour. No lead has been chosen as yet.
