Greetings, Calafia! Greetings, Calafia!

It’s been a busy few months in the Barony, without an end in sight! In March we hos- ted Calafia/Gylden- holt Friendship Tourney, and what a won- derful suc- cess! A heartfelt Thank you To Lady Arianne and Lady Mattea for their ama- zing hard work putting the event together. There was a lot of excitement generated about the event, and a lot of really great participation. We’ve never seen so much plaid in one place! Thank you all who shared in the activities that day, and we’re looking forward to what gets cooked up for next friendship! We also had the honor of being hosted by our dear Canton of Tanwayour to celebrate their Anniversary. It was a truly lovely day filled with warm companionship and wonderful memories. Thank you to Mistress Ellyn for putting the event together, and to all the members of the canton who worked so hard to make sure everything was just perfect.

Later this month, we’re looking forward to celebrating Summergate Anniversary with their annual Longsword/greatsword tournament. There are always a lot of unexpected antics and many wonderful moments at Summergate Anniversary, so we are hoping many Calafians will be able to be there to share in the day!

And as April marches along, Potrero war draws ever nearer! Volunteer sign-ups are now live on

the Potrero War website, and we encourage all of you to take a few moments and sign up for a shift or two. It is the generous hearts of the volunteers that make Potrero the amazing event that it is, and we really rely on everyone pitch- ing in to get it all done. Thank you in advance for your service! Also, more content is be- ing added to the website regularly as more details for the event are worked out, so check back often for the latest updates. Please also take a moment to review the site rules for this year prior to arriving on site. We get different directions from the county each year, so things do change from time to time. It’s better to know ahead of time than find out the hard way about a new rule!

And lastly, we would like to say a huge thank you to Lord Michael Treghie and his companions of the Bakinator oven who have generously donated a pizza night to be raffled off, with the proceeds going to the Calafian Coronet fund. Tickets will be sold up until Summergate Anniversary, and the raffle winner will be drawn at Summergate. Tickets have been selling fast, so make sure to get yours in before Summergate if you’d like to have a pizza night for you about up to 35 of your closest friends! I have very much enjoyed producing The Serpent’s Tongue for my fellow

Calafians over the past two years. My warrant will be expiring in October, and

that means it’s time to pass the torch. I am therefore actively seeking a deputy

to take over the Chronicler’s Office effective November 2016. Ideally, the Deputy

Chronicler will have experience producing a monthly publication; s/he should also

be familiar with (& hopefully own) one of those new-fangled publishing software programs. I am a

bit of a Luddite – the current ST is produced every month using PowerPoint (no, I am not kidding),

so there won’t be a whole lot in the way of training for the job since you’ll already be way ahead of

me, at least technologically speaking. If you’re interested in the position or have questions, please

email me at [email protected]. - Dagný 6

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” -- Plutarch

Do you remember that moment in the SCA when you found your passion? Whether it was the first time you picked up a sword or wrote your first poem or wove your first cord – everyone has that moment. Now is your chance to share that passion with the next generation of the SCA and provide the spark for their flame.

The SCA’s Youth and Family Achievement program (YAFA) is looking for mentors!

The mission for the YAFA program is to encourage active participation by families with chil-dren and teens in the study of a variety of medieval subjects and activities, sharing their experiences and accomplishments with others, and create ownership and investment in the Society. The goal is to have an energetic society of honorable and knowledgeable citizens developed from within. This program will guide and encourage young people and their families in seeking opportunities for involvement in the SCA.

The only way this program will be successful is through the support and involvement of mentors like you. By dedicating some of your time and sharing your knowledge and passion, you have an opportunity to pass along your knowledge and skills to the next generation of fighters, artisans and leaders of the SCA in a structured environment that will be recognized across the known world.

The YAFA program is now open to all members interested in being a mentor and signing up is easy! Go to yafa.sca.org, click “Mentor Application” at the top of the page and fill out the form. Your kingdom’s Youth Officer will then contact you with more details.

On August 31, 2015, this program will fully launch and be available for families to sign up. A follow up announcement will be made with the full details. In the meantime, for more infor-mation about the program, please click the “Resources” tab at the top of the YAFA website. Included are links to videos describing all aspects of the program and a FAQ page. Please feel free to contact your Kingdom Youth officer if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Tanwayour Anniversary & Baron Talanque Memorial Tournament

Baron Talanque was the founding Baron of Calafia and sat the throne of our fine Barony for 22 years, the longest reign of any Baron in CAID. He founded the Canton of Tanwayour, CAID’s southernmost mainland canton, on April 15, 2000, and we honor his memory every year at our anniversary event. We would like to invite you to join us at Tanwayour Anniversary and Baron Talanque Memorial Tournament on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016 at Sweetwater Summit Park, 3218 Summit Meadow Road, Bonita, CA 91902.

We will be determining our champions in Armored, Unarmored, Rapier, and Youth combat as well as choosing the first ever Bard of Tanwayour. We request that fighters choose a single style of combat in which to compete. Calafia’s A&S officer is offering two “make & take” classes: “Making Tokens of Appreciation” in the morning and “What It Means to Be a Consort” in the afternoon. There will be singing by the Calafia Choral Fellowhip, which is always wonderful to hear. The Calafian A&S pop-up will be there, providing a place to hang out and do arts.

Pets: Per County rules, pets must be on a leash no longer than 6’ and must be attended at all times. Registered companion dogs accompanying unsight-ed, deaf, or disabled persons are exempt from restrictions. Dogs that are out of control or pose a demonstrated risk to others may be asked to leave.

17 March 2016 Commentary and Announcements Commentary from the Baron and Baroness:

Thank you for coming on this holiday!

Thanks to the Calafia-Gyldenholt Friendship Tourney Stewards for an awesome event; we have lots of events coming up, so please be sure to check the calendar.

These Council meetings are great, not only for keeping our Barony running but also to help give us “family time” where we can discuss the issues that are on the minds of our populace.

Commentary from the Seneschal (THL Seraphina Lilje):

We have awarded the bid for Arts in the Park to Mistress Ellyn of Tanwayour. We have also awarded the bid for Leodamus of Thebes Tournament to Kyra and Cassandra.

Calafia has been asked to host Queens Champion Equestrian on June 5th because of Kingdom scheduling concerns with the original date and place. In the interest of time to plan the event, after consulting with Their Excellencies, I approved this request last week. Lady Rois has volunteered as Steward.

Bids for the events Leif Erickson Tournament, Calafia Equestrian Championship, and Calafia Anniversary will be accepted until the Council Meeting on 21 April.

Announcements from Peers and Kingdom Officers:

Anyone hosting an event needs to know the new required verbiage for event announcements. This will be made known to you as soon as possible – please check with the Exchequer or Seneschal before publishing any information about event costs.

Baronial Officers Reports Arts and Sciences (Lady Euginia in rauða):

For February, Lady Euginia attended St. Isidore and the Baronial Council Meeting. A&S hosted Arts & Crafts Point at St. Isidore Anniversary this year. It was a fun deviation from doing our regular A&S Point. We had macaroni for pictures, tissue paper crafts, watercolors, and paint for painting illumination. The idea was to do something different and have fun doing it. For March, we worked on organizing an A&S Point for Calafia/Gyldenholt Friendship Tourney.

Arts and Sciences (Lady Euginia, cont.):

We are doing ongoing Potrero A&S planning and accepting class proposals for War. We are also offering A&S Point for Guilds to host meet-and-greets, as well as craft solars and circles. For Tanwayour Anniversary, A&S Point will host, in the morning, a class on “Under-standing Tokens of Appreciation,” with hands-on make-and-take tokens; in the afternoon, a class on “How to be a Consort,” with make-and-take personal favors.

Chatelaine (Lady Isolde de Fetherstan):

Chatelaine was at Baronial Household on February 3, and at St. Isidore Anniversary on February 20. At St. Isidore we spoke with three families.

We have had eight email contacts from newcomers!

Inventory Day is complete! Next up, lots of laundry and mending, along with a good deal of organizing in preparation for Potrero in May.

• Deputy of Baronial Household (Mistress Fia Naheed) – Baronial Household for March was on the 2nd at Allied Gardens Rec Center. There were 12 in attendance. The topic was “Volunteering in the SCA,” and the discussion was lively and varied.

• Deputy for Demos (open position) - A reminder about St. Jude’s Demo on April 17th. Also, Cassandra ran a demo for the GSDA Charter Home School Field Day on March 11th.

Chronicler (THL Dagný Starkaðardóttir):

Chronicler’s Office is seeking a Deputy Chronicler with the goal of stepping up as Chronicler when the current Chronicler’s warrant expires in October.

Constable (Lord Juger Knot):

Attended St. Isidore Anniversary; no incidents were reported.

Exchequer (Mistress Lasairiona inghean Gheibheannaigh):

In March, attended Baronial Council and Calafia-Gyldenholt Friendship Tourney.

Continuing to work on upcoming event budgets with Event Stewards, specifically Potrero 2016, QC Equestrian, and Leodamus.

Also working on content for an Exchequer and Gate Class planned for April 5.

Council Minutes, cont. Marshall (Baron Methias Vaux, cont.):

• Deputy for Lysts (THL Tierrynna CaerNarvon) – At St. Isidore Anniversary on February 20, there were four Rapier, eight Armored, and six Unarmored fighters. Winners of the Lysts were Sir Harold (Armored), MoD Mallory (Rapier), and Tierrynna (Unarmored).

At Calafia-Gyldenholt on March 5, there were 36 Armored, 26 Rapier, seven Unarmored, and right Youth fighters. Winners of the Lysts were Duke Mansur (Armored), MoD Laertes (Rapier), Niko Phaistos (Unarmored), and Dominic & Oliver (Youth). Many thanks to Beth and Curteis for their assistance at Friendship Tourney.

I will be teaching a Lysts class at Collegium this year.

• Deputy for Archery (Lord Christoffer Dechsel) – Held four practices with six to ten archers at each.

Any Marshals who authorize anyone should email [email protected] to let me know so that I can fill out my reports properly.

• Deputy for Equestrian (THL Niall Marescal) – Nothing to report.

• Deputy for Youth Combat (THL Arianne Lightheart of Whiteheld) – Deputy Tairdelbach Clannach was the MIC for the Calafia-Gyldenholt Youth Combat, assisted by Arthur the Red. There were 12 Youth combatants, with four winners in the following categories: under six, six-nine, ten-twelve, and 13+. Prizes were awarded to all at Closing Court.

There were no practices last month, due to inclement weather.

• Deputy for Rapier (Master Michael Mallory) – Nothing to report.

• Deputy for Thrown Weapons (Lord Mikhail Liutognev) – Nothing to report.

• Deputy for Unarmored Combat (Don Avenel Kellough) – Kolbrandr Kolsson stood as MiC at St. Isidore Anniversary, where there were six fighters in the Unarmored Lysts.

Six practices were held; no waivers were collected.

There will be a forum at Collegium regarding the direction in which Unarmored Combat will be going.

Media Liaison (Lord Andrew Farefax):

No report.

Exchequer (Mistress Lasairiona, cont.):

• Deputy for Assets (Lady Sárán mac Duinn) – On February 21, we held an inventory of all items purchased with Baronial funds housed at the Baronial Keep. Eventually, the plan is to organize inventory of items purchased with Baronial funds housed in private homes of non-Officers.

• Baronial Keep (THL Michael Treighie) - The lug studs on the wheels for the enclosed trailer are heavily damaged. This makes it impossible to tighten the wheels on the trailer properly, and the lugs need to be replaced. I’ve taken off the passenger side wheel and inspected it, and the proper way to do this will be to remove the hub and take it to an automotive supply shop and have them press in replacements. The replacements themselves are not expensive – less than $15 for the lot. We’ll need to re-pack the bearings with grease before remounting the hub. We have a grease gun; we’ll need a tub of grease (also inexpensive). We can do the work on Sunday at the Provisioners Guild meeting; otherwise, my next window will be March 26.

Herald (Lady Ariana verch Gwenllian):

In February, attended the February 18 Populace Meeting. Also attended and ran Court at St. Isidore Anniversary on February 20. Attended Kingdom Heraldry on February 21, and Ariana and Eridana ran consulting at Baronial Scriptorium on February 23.

In March, attended the Calafia Officer Meeting on March 1. At Calafia-Gyldenholt Friendship Tourney, Ariana ran Court and Eridana ran the consulting table. Congratulations to those who received awards at Calafia-Gyldenholt:

• Ellyn of Tanwayour – Serpent’s Flame for Millinery • Christoffer Sechsel – Serpent’s Flame for Cooking • Arnora Tryggvadottir – Golden Trident • Mikhail Liutognev – Golden Trident

• Deputy Herald – Consulting (Baroness Eridana Ambra Dragotta) – If you wish to fight in Crown, please have your letters of intent to the heralds by next month’s meeting.

Marshall (Baron Methias Vaux):

At St. Isidore Anniversary, we had eight fighters and one waiver. There have been Deputy Marshals at both All practices this month. I should be back on task by April 3.

Council Minutes, cont. Social Media (Lord Christoffer Dechsel):

One post on the Baronial Facecbook page went beyond the bounds of appropriate conversation. We spoke to the post’s writer, and they pulled the post down.

It was a slow month on Facebook; I have not been active in ensuring that there are posts keeping up the traffic on either the group or page. On the other hand, we’ve had several genuine requests to join the Baronial group, and only a few bots. This office is exploring the potential of starting an Instagram account under the direction of the new Social Media Deputy, Gabriel Baeder.

I was extensively questioned by Kingdom SM regarding the Weekly Wander, and they had glowing praise for the system and will be recommending it to other baronies.

Webwright (THL Curteis FitzOsbern):

Attended Baronial Officer’s meeting on March 1.

Continue to support the Potrero registration process. As of March 16, there are 1162 Land registrations and 320 PreRegistrations, for 72 camps and 45 RV/Camping spots. The iVolunteer sites are now live for Potrero War Setup Crew and War volunteers.

Housekeeping: standardization of email addresses for Baronial officers, Guild and Event Stewards, for possible rollout with fall officer change. Resolve confusing email addresses and streamline forwards clutter. Exploring options for a turnkey event registration system for Potrero to address current system’s legacy code and maintenance by future Webwrights.

Use of Google Apps for Potrero War has demonstrated value of cloud services account for the Barony. We intend to work with the Kingdom Webwright to advance evaluation of Office365 vs. GoogleApps, and the possibility of separate Baronial accounts vs a single Kingdom account.

Deputy Seneschals:

• Events (Lord Liam Makfersan) – No report.

• Guilds (Lady Grainne ingen Tomais) – Attended Officer’s meeting on March 1.

• Special Projects (THL Margeret Kerne) – Attended the Baronial Council meeting, St. Isidore Anniversary, and the Calafia-Gyldenholt Friendship Tourney.

Deputy Seneschals (cont.):

• Special Projects (THL Margeret Kerne, cont.) – THL Dagný is designing a street sigh for Potrero. She is creating plans for it, and will need woodworkers to help build the signposts.

The Potrero Stewards are also looking at repairing and potential building new sunshowers. I will attend the meeting to look at the state of the sunshowers and hopefully assist in the creation of plans to build and repair the showers.

We will hopefully be ready to build signs and showers for this year’s War. I am looking for volunteers for this project.

• Waivers/Warrants (Lady Elspeth Lyttleburye) – No report.

• Secretary (Lord Christoffer Dechsel) – No report

• Rec Center Rep (THL Sakan bint al-Kimiya’i) – No report.

Official Event Stewards for Tanwayour Anniversary are Mistress Ellyn and Lady Agnes.

Tanwayour’s A&S officer, Lady Agnes, has moved to Dreiburgen and will no longer be able to continue in her position. We do have Constable now, though, so we have the required number of officers. The Exchequer and Seneschal positions will be traded between Ebhlenn and Ellyn at our Anniversary.

College of St. Artemas (DARK)

College of St. Isidore (Lord Domhnall Ó Loirgeneáin):

There were 80 attendees at St. Isidore Anniversary. No meetings held so far, but there will be one soon to discuss plans for Potrero War.

The Guild hosted the luncheon for St. Isidore Anniversary; it was well attended.

Our monthly meeting had five in attendance; two were brand new to the SCA.

The Guild will be hosting breakfast at Tanwayour Anniversary. There will be plenty of goodies and the life-giving elixir known as coffee.

The Guild is looking at events for Potrero War; so far we have an Introduction to the Bardic Arts being taught by Lord Fergus.

Brewers Guild (Lady Talan Tanki):

No report.

Celtic Guild (Lady Adelwyn Atewattere):

In February, we were present at Galafia-Gyldenhot Friendship Tourney, where a few of our members judged the Limerick Contest. We also had a pop-up and table with Celtic books and drawing supplies for those who wished to learn how to draw Celtic knots. We had two of the populace join us for most of the day to draw (including the Gyldenholt Reeve and Reevess’s daughter).

In March we will meet once. We are starting to plan classes for Potrero War, including a Celtic 101 class and a special out-of-town guest teaching about Celtic clothing. Stay tuned for more!

Company of St. Catherine (Baroness Thea Northernridge):

The Guild met on Tuesday, March 8; there were eight in attendance. We began to pattern our doublets using the Gnagy method. We will continue to work on making sure all who are interested end up with a pattern to start working from. It’s complex, but as we practice the drafting it should become easier.

Costumer’s Guild (Lady Brighid ni Muirenn):

Mistress Ellyn of Tanwayour taught a class on fitting the bodice section for a 14th century gown, commonly called the Gothic Fitted Dress. Five people attended.

In April, Mistress Ellyn will continue her Gothic Fitted Dress class with cutting out the dress and patterning the sleeve. We will cut out dress panels and gores, then draw up sleeve patterns , although sleeves may be a separate class depending on how many people attend.

Equestrian Guild (Duchess Kara the Twin of Kelton):

There were about 20 people at February’s practice. We voted in an updated Guild Charter.

Next practice is Sunday, March 27 at Tumbleweed Ranch. June practice is now Queen’s Champion Equestrian Tournament.

Upcoming: a fundraiser featuring SCA Equestrian T-Shirts for sale.

European Dance (THL Maluchka Korotkova):

Business meeting was held in February. We drafted a Charter; a rough draft can be viewed on the European Dance Guild’s Facebook page.

Kumihimo: and “Rope Splicing.” The Guild will also run Plunder again this year. We are working on new content for Quests and Challenges. The Guild approved Plunder prize funds, to include $120 for Qty 2 Potrero 2017 registrations, and $50 towards the Volunteer Steward’s plans for Salvage prizes.

We are looking into live-blogging Spring Crown Tourney for Fantasy Lysts League again. We discussed the possibility of a Guild bid to steward a local event; the topic was tabled for further research. We also discussed the possibility of a Guild merchant booth at Potrero 2017, as HQ for Plunder activities; this topic was also tabled for further research.

Needleworkers (Baroness Adelicia of Caithness):

No report.

Pottery Guild (THL Gemma Evangelista Borgia):

No report.

Provisioners Guild (THL Michael Treighie):

The Guild served lunch at Friendship Tourney for 100 diners. The vegtarian pasties stole the show, although the home-smoked ham was supposed to be the undisputed star. Chris’s root puree was also more popular than expected.

We held a Guild meeting Sunday before the mini-tourney; the subject was “Provisioners 101: What We Do, and Why.” Arguments backed with food are always more persuasive, so, there will be samples.

The Guild is also planning a Cultures in Food class at the Baron’s home on Sunday, April 10.

Rapier Guild (THL Rhua Cat Ifrinn):

There was a lighter attendance at regular practices due to injuries and illnesses. Otherwise, no new business or meetings last month.

Scholars (Duke Guillaume de la Belgique):

No report.

Scriptorium (Vacant?):

We are still meeting on the fourth Tuesday of every month!

Viking Guild (Lady Euginia in rauða):

The Guild was dark in February. We had a naalbinding class scheduled, but our teacher was forced to cancel for health reasons. Hopefully we can reschedule for later in the year.

Viking Guild (Lady Euginia in rauða, cont.):

Upcoming classes: our March 28 class will be taught by Mistress Ellyn; she will be teaching us how to make a Viking caftan. In April, Thora Jonsdottir will be teaching how to make a Viking Age hood. For May, we will be dark, but we will be hosting a meet-and-greet on Saturday night at Potrero. More details to come, closer to the War.

I have not yet requested money for our Guild dayshade. I want to wait until after Potrero to make this project happen.

Recent Events St. Isidore Anniversary:

Null.

Calafia-Gyldenholt Friendship Tournament:

The tournament was a well-run event, with 240 people in attendance. Our deposit on the site has been returned.

Upcoming Events: Tanwayour Anniversary:

April 2 – Mistress Ellyn is Event Steward.

Summergate Anniversary:

April 23 at Buddy Todd Park in Oceanside.

Potrero War:

The projected budget shows over $81,000 in expenses. Baroness Dierdre made a motion to approve the budget; Isolde seconded the motion and the motion was carried. There will be a War Staff meeting at Briercrest Park on April 3.

St. Jude’s Demo, April 17:

There will be a silent auction as well as a raffle and bake sale. 100% of all proceeds from the entire event will be donated to St. Jude’s hospital.

Fall Crown Tournament, September 17:

We would like to have Calafia’s Guilds sponsor/run various parts of the event, like erics or perhaps a Guild-run food court. All ideas pending approval of Their Majesties, of course.
