THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF LA SALLE GREEN HILLS – ADULT NIGHT HIGH SCHOOL SECOND TRIMESTER S.Y. 2017-2018 VOL. XVI NO. 2

La Salle Green Hills was given the Gabriela Silang Award by the Depart-

ment of Health—Philippine Blood Center on December 1, 2017 at Hotel

Rembrandt, Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City.

Miss Ana Ria B. Aguilar, the ANHS Social Concerns Program Moderator

accepted the award on behalf of the school. As part of the Dugong Bayani

Awards, PBC honored the school for conducting Mobile Blood Donation Activi-

ties with accumulated collection of less than 100 blood bags for 2017.

79 blood bags were collected in the annual bloodletting activity which

was participated by students, faculty, staff, alumni, De La Salle Brothers, and the

entire LSGH community spearheaded by the SCP. ANHS conducts two blood-

letting activities for the entire school year. It encourages the community to be part

of the mission to contribute to society through meaningful activities like the blood

donation.

Miss Aguilar said, ‚Happiness consists in giving and in serving others

because we rise by lifting others. Because of that, no joy can equal the joy of serv-

ing others.‛

True to its name, the courage shown by Gabriela Silang being the first

female leader of revolutionary movement against the Spaniards was also mani-

fested by the donors who exhibited examples of heroism and love for our

countrymen by saving others’ lives through blood donation.

that, the Student Council officers led

the volunteer students in the campus

tour. The guests observed classes in

dents to know more about the pro-

grams of the school. Selected ANHS

faculty and students socialized with

simple feast was prepared for them.

According to Analisa Espi-

masyong ating natatanggap.

Since the implementation of K to 12 Curriculum in ANHS, recent

developments have been observed. Starting from Grade 9, students go to

school every Saturday to take Senior High School courses to augment the

number of years of stay. Instead of six years, students only take high

school for five years because of the said Saturday classes. This also ad-

dresses the fact that most of our students are working. After finishing

courses that would require an assessment, students prepare for the said

qualification and get National Competency Certificate as early as Grade 9.

This school year 2017-2018, ANHS also opened its doors to Grade

11 students. The school welcomed students who graduated from schools

outside ANHS who wanted to take Accountancy, Business and Manage-

ment (ABM) Strand or Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track.

Next school year, ANHS expects to have more students from Al-

ternative Learning System of LSGH and neighboring schools to be part of

the growing community.

Some students find Senior High School courses hard and even

stressful because of the changes and complexity they bring. However, stu-

dents still realize the practicality and help of those courses in terms of de-

veloping their skills to be ready for employment or college admission. Al-

so, in K to 12 Curriculum, students are given the chance to work on their

own and become more independent in terms of their learning when they

do their research projects.

Though there have been movements to abolish the K to 12 Curricu-

lum due to longer years a student spends in high school compared to the

old curriculum, it is still proper to recognize the benefits it gives to stu-

dents. The Department of Education (DepEd) continues to enhance the

curriculum in order to provide training and develop the skills of students.

This hopes to prepare them academically to pursue a degree in college or

to apply immediately for a job in our country or abroad if they wish to

since they are already equipped with necessary skills. Students see the ben-

efit of K to 12 Curriculum as they learn new skills and courses that help

them not only to be academically excellent but also productive citizens of

the country.

OPINION SECOND TRIMESTER 2017-2018 5

May

laking trahedyang nangyari doon?

LITERARY SECOND TRIMESTER 2017-2018 7

Self-Esteem By John Christopher Glenn L. Leones, Grade 11—TVL

(First Place—Poetry Writing: English Week Celebration 2017)

I used to be this kid who is impatient and shy, and I used to be fed; by these sheer lies. That I am not able, because I can‟t speak English; therefore I am unstable. I am disabled. So I locked myself in my room, and I started to cry. Thoughts that are very gloom started drowning me to death. For all those years of insecurity, I was consumed. That I am illiterate and weak and I am fated to be doomed. But all things in life have their dead end, where our time bends, and our God sends the strength to overcome trials, to give right ideas, and to fill in our dry hearts. And so I started studying, and conquered my fear. Instead of mopping and crying, I tried to fight and persevere. Until days had passed, and months, and years, I joined in many competitions, And made some peers. Now you might be thinking Where does it connect? Where is the English theme and what does it reflect? Well the answer is; English serves to connect. It is not just a language that must be neglected for it gives us confidence to interact. It gives us the instrument how to adapt.

Future Leader By Angeliene A. Tulauan, SHS-ABM

A Lasallian leader does the first move In projects, assignments, and school activities The one who leads his/her members And unites them in their journey together. No matter who you are they will greet you, Together with the smile that shows respect to you. As a leader you don‟t need to know everything, Just know by heart St. La Salle‟s teachings. A leader takes initiative in implementing rules And follows every rule as well A leader serves wholeheartedly Making sure that everyone is on the right track. Being a good example is the big thing You can contribute something That will stay in every Lasallian‟s heart That you can pass to the next generation.

Committed to Excellence By Aireen R. Gordo, SHS-TVL

A student will talk about the stress from assignments And maybe tell others about his achievements A student will try too hard, and still fail A student knows that sometimes, those ships will just sail. Excellence is always the goal, one would say But how can it be reached within a day? How does one capture this in his palms? How could a student aim for this and still be calm? Students will pass their homework forward Students will not sleep until they get their honors Student will not only succeed but also help others Student will make their thoughts felt no matter what. These student are not perfect But they always know the results are worth it They know that school, in essence, Is the pursuit and journey to excellence.

Competent By Jemelyn P. Jalem, Grade 11-ABM

Everyone wants to be successful, But only few of them reach it Not because they are lucky But because they are hardworking. No one wants to fail, They want to have a beautiful life But they do not even work hard To reach their dream in life. All success starts with a failure But you have to face the trials That will come into your life So that you will reach your goals. Success comes with competence By giving our best in whatever task that is given to us By doing well and not choosing to be a mediocre Makes us be globally competitive individuals.

SECOND TRIMESTER 2017-2018 8

FEATURES PUNLAD

‘’Lasallians without limits’’ is the theme of Asia Pacific Lasallian Youth Congress 11

(APLYC11) that was held in De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Cavite last December 3 to 9, 2017.

It was participated by La Salle Schools from 15 different countries from Asia Pacific Region. It was

almost 26 years later that our country hosted this congress again after 1989 and 1991.

The main objectives of this congress are to deepen the understanding of the Lasallian

identity and spirituality as a lived experience in the Asia Pacific context and to provide action-

oriented, education, training, formation opportunities to young Lasallians so that they become

agents of change especially for the poor and neglected. Christian Paul Galang and I were the rep-

resentatives from ANHS while Maphi Ona and Sharky Roxas represented LSGH day high school

in the said event. This is the first time that ANHS sends representatives to APLYC, so we are very

thankful to our principal, school officials, and generous sponsors for the opportunity to be part of

the said event.

I learned a lot of new things in the congress from the first day until the last day. On the

first day we went to De La Salle Zobel to have a creative workshop with the College of St. Benilde

Pep Squad. The representatives were divided to small groups and performed in front with the

beat of traditional La Salle cheers. This was a challenge for me because I do not even know how to

dance. Thank God I did it well with the help of my group mates. Afterwards, we watched the

play on the life of St. John Baptist De La Salle. On the second day, we were divided again into

groups for the team building. From that experience, I learned how to work and cooperate with

others, that believing others can make a difference too. On the following day which is the third day of the congress, after the morning prayer at the garden and group

picture in front of Ugnayang La Salle, we were divided again into groups for the community exposure. My group went to Maharlika Village in Taguig City to visit our

Muslim brothers and sisters especially the ‘’bakwit’’ or the victims of Marawi siege. My group was also given a chance to observe their midday prayer at their mosque

and had lunch with some of them. The ‘’bakwit’’ also shared about their experiences in Marawi battle. We had interaction with them afterwards. This is the most mem-

orable part of the congress for me because I realized that Filipino race has no religion (whether you are Christian or Muslim), no beliefs, and no differences because

during the calamities like war only Filipinos help their fellow Filipinos. The fourth day of the event is allotted for recreation day. We had a campus tour in De La Salle

Health Science Institute and were given a free time at Sky Ranch after our lunch at Kuse. In the evening after we arrived at DLSU-D, we had our Cultural Night where

each of the countries performed wearing their traditional dress. On the fifth and last day of the event we had a session on what is next after APLYC. The representatives

were grouped according to their respective country. This is for planning on what’s next after APLYC. The team Philippines is divided again according to the regions

(Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao). Here in Luzon where LSGH belongs, we decided to raise awareness on the importance of education with the help of debate club of De

La Salle University. Each of the country is given until December 8, 2018 to finish the community work. Afterwards, we had the closing dinner at Ugnayang La Salle.

Like what the message of the theme song of the congress ‘’We Are One,’’ I had also an opportunity to get to know other delegates and some of them became

my best buddies including Quang Duy Do and Cuong Bui of Vietnam, Antony Pisut, Boom Reunjarassi, and Benz Rungrot of Thailand, Danny Veno of Malaysia and

Mark Cheung (president of Lasallian Youth Movement in La Salle College in Hongkong). Though we came from different places and speak different languages, we

gathered here to fulfill our mission as one, the mission of our father founder St. John Baptist De La Salle. I enjoyed the entire APLYC, and it boosts my self-confidence

most especially my Lasallian spirit. I realized that each one of us is like an arrow; the future of our country begins in us. ANIMO LA SALLE!

Participants of the APYLC after the cultural presentation

In order to feature the talents of ANHS students in singing, dancing, and

acting, the Performing Arts Night was held last at the Br. Rafael S. Donato FSC

Center for the Performing Arts last December 18, 2017 which was participated by

members of ANHS Chorale, Teatro Lasalyano, Sayaw Lasalyano, and selected

ANHS students.

The ANHS Chorale members serenaded the audience with their angelic

voices mixing the foreign and OPM songs. Teatro Lasalyano presented BaKal o

Batang Kalye which aimed to heighten the awareness of students in terms of socie-

tal issues that affect our countrymen. Issues shown were poverty, corruption, and

indifference of the people among our brethren. The Sayaw Lasalyano members

showed their gift in dancing to entertain the audience.

Mr. Rey B. Ducay, the ANHS Chorale Moderator said that the theme of

this year’s event were ‚Mother Mary‛ because it was originally pegged on De-

cember 8, 2017, the Feast of Immaculate Conception, ‚Wag Kang Papatay‛ as our

school is supporting CBCP’s campaign, and ‚Christmas.‛

According to Nicole Astorga of 10-A, an actor in the play, ‚I am happy

and blessed to be part of the annual Performing Arts Night. I was able to show-

case my talent and improve it through the help of the moderator. I learned a lot

in terms of managing my time and committing myself in every rehearsal.‛

Moderators of the different participating clubs, Mr. Ducay (ANHS Cho-

rale), Mr. Jose Z. Isip (Teatro Lasalyano), and Miss Junelyn R. Domingo (Sayaw

Lasalyano) guided their members to ensure the success of the activity.
