EXECUTIVESUMMARY
SouthwarkCouncilplantoundertakeremodellingworkstocreatec.900newburialplotsatthecurrentlyunusedOldNurserySite(knownasAreaB)onHonorOakPark,LondonSE233LB.LandUseConsultantsLtdhaveundertakenafeasibilitystudyandprovidedthreedesignoptionsforthesite(seeAppendixA5).
AbatsurveywascommissionedinMay2016toassessthevalueofthesiteforbatsandthelikelyimpactoftheproposalsontheseEuropeanProtectedSpecies.Thisreportdetailsthemethodology,resultsandconclusionsofsurveyscompletedbetween11thand19thMay2016.
Thekeyfindingsofthesurveywere:
• ThemainhabitatsoccurringatAreaB includebuildingsandhardsurfacing(~0.6ha),amixedwoodland copse (~0.3ha), semi-improved neutral grassland and ruderal vegetation (0.3ha),togetherwithscatteredtreesandshrubs,maturetreelinesandnon-nativehedgerows.
• Thedesktopstudyrevealedtworoostrecordsand79batflightrecordswithina2kmsearchradiusofthesite.Norecordswerefromthesiteitself.
• ThevalueofthesitetoroostingbatswasassessedasLOW/NEGLIGIBLE.
• CommonpipistrellePipistrelluspipistrellus,sopranopipistrelleP.pygmaeus,noctuleNyctalusnoctulaandLeisler’sbatN.Leisleriwererecordedatthesite.
• Commonpipistrelleandnoctulewererecordedlateintheiremergenceperiodandroostsitesarelikelytooccurneartothesite,ratherthanfromthesiteitself.
• Thesitefallsalongaflightlineusedbycommutingcommonpipistrelleandnoctulebats.Thewoodlandedge,scatteredtreesandshrubsoversemi-improvedneutralgrassland,andmaturetreelinesofferedforaginghabitatusedbylownumbersofPipistrellussp.
TheimpactofthedevelopmentproposalonbatsandtheirroostsitesisassessedasNEGLIGIBLE.
Option2isthepreferreddesignforthesitesincethemajorityoffeaturesfoundtobeofvaluetocommuting(andforaging)batswouldberetained/restored.
Thewoodlandhabitatshouldbeenhancedbyremovinginvasivespecies,infillplantingwithnativetreeandshrubspeciesandretainingdeadwood.
Thebiodiversityvalueofthenewburialareacouldbeenhancedbyincludingnightscentedspecieswithintheornamentalplanting,seedingtheareawithanappropriatewildflowermixandleavinguncutmarginsalongsidethewoodlandedge,treelinesandhedgerows.
Treelinesorhedgerowsshouldbeplantedalongtheeasternboundaryandaccesstracktoprovidescreeningoftheadjacentstationplatformlightingandtomaintainflightlines,respectively.

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND
1.1.1 SouthwarkCouncilproposetobringc.1.4hectaresofcurrentlyunusedland(AreaB)atHonor
OakParkintouseasaburialarea.Theschemewillinvolveremodelingthesitetomakesuitable
forburialsandensuringcontinuedaccessibilitytoCamberwellNewCemeteryandtheadjacent
HonorOakParkrecreationalground.
1.1.2 AnecologicalsurveywascommissionedbySouthwarkCounciltoprovidebaselineinformation
on the value of the existing habitats for bats and to identify any potential impacts of the
proposalsontheseEuropeanProtectedSpecies.
1.1.3 Thisreportdetailsthemethodology,resultsandconclusionsofbatsurveysundertakenatthe
sitebetween11thand19thMay2016.Mitigationmeasuresrequiredtocomplywiththewildlife
legislation are described. Recommended habitat enhancement measures that should be
consideredwithinthefinaldesignplansarealsodiscussed.
1.2 DESCRIPTIONOFSITE
1.2.1 TheOldNurserySite (knownasAreaB)consistsofapproximately1.4haofcurrentlyunused
land locatedonthenorthsideofHonorOakPark,betweenHonorOakParkRailwayStation
(east)andHonorOakParkAllotments(west).CamberwellNewCemeteryoccurstothenorthof
thesite.AccesstothesiteviaatrackroadoffHonorOakParkwhichprovidesaccesstothe
HonorOakParkSportsGrounds.TheNationalGridReferenceforthecentreoftheapplication
siteisTQ3581374196.
1.2.2 Area B supports a mosaic of habitats including a mixed woodland copse (~0.3ha), semi-
improved neutral grassland and ruderal vegetation (~0.3ha), buildings and hard-surfacing
(~0.6ha)togetherwithareasofscatteredtreesandshrubs,maturetreelinesandnon-native
hedging.AnaerialviewoftheapplicationsiteisprovidedinAppendix2(Plan1).
1.2.3 ThesiteIssituatedinaresidentialareaofsouth-eastlondonandthesurroundinglanduseis
occupiedbyprivate residential housing and associated community facilities. The site iswell
connected toareasofopenspace includingHonorOakParkAllotments (immediatelywest),
OneTreeHillLocalNatureReserve(LNR)(195mwest),theAquariusGolfClub(340north-west)
andCamberwellNewCemeteryandtheHonorOakSportsGround(immediatelynorth).These
sites supportadiversityofhabitats includingwoodland, scatteredmature treesand shrubs,

amenitygrasslandandmaturetreelines.
1.2.4 Nostatutoryornon-statutorydesignationsapplytothesite.
1.3 THEECOLOGICALSURVEY
1.3.1 AbatsurveywascompletedbyaClass2NaturalEnglandBatLicensee(2015_10494_CLS_CLS)
inMay2016.Thiscomprisedadesktopstudy,agroundleveltreeassessment,astaticdetector
surveyandoneeveningbatemergenceandactivitysurvey.
1.3.2 ThesurveyfollowedthemethodologyoutlinedinTheBatConservationTrustsBatSurveyfor
ProfessionalEcologists–GoodPracticeGuidelines(3rdEdition)(Collins,J(ed),2016).
1.4 CONSTRAINTS
1.4.1 AllsurveyworkdetailedinthisreportwascarriedoutduringthemonthofMayandtherefore
thevalueofthesiteforbatsatothertimesoftheyearcouldnotbeverified.
1.4.2 Thegroundleveltreeassessmentwascarriedoutatasuboptimaltimeofyearwhentreeswere
in full leaf.Somepotential roost featuresmay thereforehavebeenmissedduetoobscured
views.
1.4.3 Accesstothemaintenanceyardwasnotpossibleandacomprehensivesurveyofthisareawas
not possible. Instead, the assessment was based on information gathered from aerial
photographs.
1.4.4 Theweatherconditionsduringthesurveyweresuboptimalonsomenightswherebyrainwas
reported or temperatures fell below the recommended minimum temperature of 8°C.
However,batrecordswerestillobtainedduringthesenightsalbeitatalowerfrequencytoother
datesofsurvey.
1.5 THEDEVELOPMENTPROPOSAL
1.5.1 Theproposalentailsthecreationofc.900burialplotsbybringingthecurrentlyunusedland;
OldNurserySite(AreaB);inthesouthofCamberwellNewCemeteryintouseasanewburial
area. The scheme will involve the remodeling of the site to make suitable for burials and
ensuringcontinuedaccessibilitytothecemeteryandadjacentrecreationground.
1.5.2 LandUseConsultantsLtdhaveundertakena feasibilitystudyfortheproposalandproduced
threeoptionsforthelandscapingworks.TheseareshowninAppendixA5.

1.5.3 Insummary,thekeymodificationstotheareaassociatedwiththethreeoptionsisasfollows:
Option1
§ Anewaccesstrackwouldbeprovidedtotheeastoftheexistingtrackroadandthecarparkwouldberelocatedtowardsthesouthernboundary,byHonorOakPark.
§ Theexistinggrasslandhabitatborderingthewoodlandcopsewouldbereplacedwithhard-surfacing.
§ Thewesternwoodland copse and non-native hedgingwould be lost togetherwith asectionofsoutherncopseandthetreelinealongthenorthernboundary.
§ Theareaoccupiedbyscatteredtreesandshrubsovergrasslandintheeasternpartofthesitewouldbesignificantlyreducedinextent.
§ Swaleswouldbeprovidedatthesoutheasternandsouth-westerncornersofthesiteaswellasalongtheexistingburialplotslocatedimmediatelynorthoftheapplicationsite.
§ Themaintenanceyardwouldberelocatednorthofitscurrentlocation.
§ Newpedestrianaccesswouldbecreatedalongtheeasternboundary.
Option2
§ Theaccess track,carparkingareaandmaintenanceyardwouldberetainedtogetherwiththesouthernwoodlandcopse,amarginofgrasslandhabitatinthesouthernpartofthesiteandthenortherntreeline.
§ The woodland and non—native hedging along the access track would be lost andreplacedwithanewlyplantedmound.
§ Theareaoccupiedbyscatteredtreesandshrubsovergrasslandintheeasternpartofthesitewouldbereducedinextentandreplacedwithburialplots.
§ Aswalewouldbecreatedtotheeastofthemaintenanceyard.
§ Newpedestrianaccesswouldbecreatedalongtheeasternboundary.
Option3
§ Theexistingaccessroadwouldberetainedandwidenedtoprovideanewparkingareaalongthewesternboundary.Toaccommodatethis, thewoodlandandhedgingalongtheaccesstrackwouldbelosttohardstanding.Aswalewouldbealsoprovidedhereandalongsidetheexistingburialplots,north-eastoftheapplicationsite.
§ Thesouthernwoodlandcopseandnortherntree linewouldberetainedbutareasof

§ Themaintenanceyardwouldberelocatednorthofitscurrentlocation.

2 METHODOLOGY
2.1 DESKSTUDY
2.1.1 A data search of all known bat records within a 2km search radius centred on the site
(TQ358741)wasrequestedfromtheLondonBatGroupinMay2016.
2.1.2 Thepurposeofthestudywastodeterminewhetherthereisanyhistoricalevidenceofaroost
occurringwithinorneartothesiteandtoascertainthespeciesofbatknowntooccurwithin
theimmediatesurroundingarea.
2.2 SITEASSESSMENT
2.2.1 AdaytimepreliminarybatassessmentofAreaBwascarriedouton11thMay2016.Thesurvey
included a ground level inspection of the allmature treeswithin the application site and a
walkoversurveytoidentifypotentialbatroosting,foragingandcommutinghabitats.Thesurvey
wascarriedoutusingladders,closefocusingbinocularsandahighpowertorch.
Identificationofpotentialtreeroosts
2.2.2 Featuresofpotentialvaluetobatsasaroostsiteincludednaturalholes,cracks/splitsinmajor
limbs,loosebarkandthepresenceofdenseepicormicgrowthand/orivy,
2.2.3 Batfieldsigns,notablydroppings,scratchmarksandurineandfuroilstainingaroundsuitable
crevicesweresearchfor.
Batforagingandcommutinghabitat
2.2.4 Thesuitabilityofthesiteandimmediatesurroundingareatoprovideforagingandcommuting
opportunities for bats was evaluated from aerial photographs (Google Earth) and direct
observationsmadeduringthesiteassessmentandeveningbatemergenceandactivitysurvey.

2.2.5 The value of the survey area to foraging batswas assessed according to the occurrence of
vegetation that typically supports high insect biomass such as edge and mosaic habitats,
shelteredhabitatfeatures,broadleavedtreesandaquatichabitats.
2.2.6 Commutinghabitatincludeslinearvegetatedfeaturessuchastreelines,woodlandedgesand
watercourses.
2.2.7 Potential barriers to the movement of animals includes lighting, major roads (A-
roads/Motorways)andpoorlyvegetatedurbanandindustriallydevelopedland.
2.3 EVENINGBATEMERGENCEANDACTIVITYSURVEY
2.3.1 Oneeveningbatemergenceandactivitysurveywascompletedatthesitebythreesurveyors
on19thMay2016.
2.3.2 EachsurveyorwasequippedwithaBatBoxDuetheterodyneandfrequencydivisiondetector
(BatBoxLtd)andhandheldrecorders (EdirolR09/R05)and/orEM3+(WildlifeAcoustics Inc.)
and/orAnabatWalkabout(TitleyElectronics)whichhavein-builtrecordingcapabilities.
2.3.3 Thesurveycommencedat30minutesbeforesunsetandlastednolessthan2hours.Surveyors
walked transects around the site ensuring all notable habitat featureswere included in the
survey.
2.3.4 Allecholocationcallswere recordedand lateranalysedusingBatSoundSoftware (Petersson
Elektronics)toverifythespecies.Thelocationofbatcontactswasmappedtogetherwithany
fieldobservations(i.e.batsforaging,commuting,existingroost).
2.4 STATICDETECTORSURVEYS
2.4.1 TwosongMeter(SM2)staticdetectorsfittedwithSMX_U1microphonesattachedtoa1-3m
cables (Wildlife Acoustic Inc.) were deployed at the site between 11th and 18th May 2016.
Detector 1 was deployed along themature tree line at the northern boundary of the site.
Detector2wasdeployedalongthewoodlandedgeatthesouthernboundaryofthesite.The
locationofthesedevicesisshownonPlan2inAppendixA2.
2.4.2 Thedetectorswereprogramedtobeactiveatsunset–30minutesupuntilsunrise+30minutes.
AllbatcallswererecordedandlateranalysedusingBatSoundSoftwaretoverifythespecies.
2.4.3 Atimelineofbatactivitywasproducedforeachnightsurveyed.

3 RESULTS
3.1 DESKSTUDYLondonBatGroupDataSearch
3.1.1 TworoostrecordsforunidentifiedPipistrellusspandavesperbatwerereturnedfromthedata
search. One bat casualty record for a common pipistrelle Pipistrellus pipistrellus was also
returned.(Casualtyrecordsareoftenindicativeofaroostoccurringnearby).
3.1.2 Seventy-nine bat flight records were noted. These included common pipistrelle Pipistrellus
pipistrellus(No.22),sopranopipistrelleP.pygmaeus(No.16),Nathusius’pipistrelleP.nathusii
(No.4), noctuleNyctalus noctula (No. 5), Leisler’s batN. Leisleri (No.10), and unconfirmed
Pipistrellus sp (No.7),Nyctalus sp (No.1)andVespertilionidaebats (No.14).No recordswere
fromthesiteitself.
3.1.3 Previous surveys of the adjacent Area D at Camberwell New Cemetery in summer 2015
identifiedtransientroostsusedbylownumbersofcommonpipistrelleandsopranopipistrelle
bats(approximately150mnorth-westofAreaB).Flightrecordsforthesespeciesandnoctule
andLeisler’sbatwerealsonoted.
3.2 SITEASSESSMENT
3.2.1 The site assessment was completed on 11thMay 2016. The weather conditions during the
surveysweremostlydrybutovercastwithalightbreeze.Therewasashortheavydownpour
duringthesurveyandrainhadbeenreportedonthedaysleadinguptothesitevisit.
3.2.2 Adescriptionofthesurveyareaisprovidedbelow.Notablefeaturesaredescribedastarget
notes (TN) and their location is shown in Plan 2, Appendix 2. Photographs to support the
descriptivetextcanbefoundinAppendixA3.
WoodlandCopse
3.2.3 Thesitesupportsc.0.3haofwoodlandhabitatwhichislocatedalongthesouthernboundary
withHonorOakParkandalongthetrackroadthatprovidesaccesstoHonorOakParkSports
Ground (TN1, Photograph 1). The copse comprised amix of native and non-native species:
NorwaymapleAcerplatanoides, sycamoreAcerpseudoplatus, ashFraxinusexcelsior, cherry
Prunus sp and occasional beech Fagus sp, horse chestnutAesculus hippocastanum and oak
Quercusspwithashrublayerofashandsycamoresaplings,cherrylaurelPrunuslaurocerasus,
hawthorn Crataegus sp., elder Sambucus nigra, brambles Rubus fructicosa, butterfly bush

BuddleiadavidiiandivyHederahelix.
3.2.4 Potential roost featureswere limited to thewestern part of the copsewhere therewere a
numberofashandsycamorethatwerecladwithdenseivy(TN2,Photograph2).
Treelines
3.2.5 AtreelinecomprisingmainlyLombardypoplarPopulussp,withinfrequentcopperbeech,horse
chestnut, Leyland Cyprus, hawthorn and elder, defined the north-western boundary of the
applicationsite(TN3,Photograph3).
3.2.6 TwolinesofLeylandCyprustreesCupressus×leylandiioccuralongthesouthernboundarywith
HonorOakParkandprovidedscreeningfromtheadjacentroad(TN4,Photograph4).
3.2.7 Noneofthetreesassociatedwiththesetreelineswerefoundtosupportfeaturesofvalueto
batsasaroost.Insteadtheirvaluetobatsislikelytobeasapotentialforagingresourceand
flightline,offeringconnectivitytotheadjacentallotments,CamberwellNewCemeteryandOne
TreeHillLNR.
Semi-improvedneutralgrassland
3.2.8 Semi-improvedneutralgrasslandoccupiedc.0.3haofthesite,predominantlyintheeastern
partofthesite(TN5,Photograph5).Theswardsupportedavarietyoffloweringherbsincluding
birdsfoottrefoilLotuscorniculatus,creepingbuttercupRanunculusrepens,goosegrassGalium
aparine, black medick Medicago lupulina, sheep’s sorrel Rumex acetosella, kidney vetch
Anthyllisvulneraria,cinquefoilPotentillasp,plantainPlantagosp,redcloverTrifoliumpratense,
dandelionTaraxacumspandhawkbitLeontodonsp,togetherwithcommonnettleUrticadioica,
willowherbEpilobiumsp.,spurgeEuphorbiumsp,cowparsleyAnthriscussylvestris,ox-eyedaisy
Leucanthemumvulgare,burdockArctiumsp,docks Rumexsp,andthistleCirsiumsp..These
speciesprovidenectar sources foradiversityofnocturnal insectsand thehabitat therefore
offersapotentialforagingresourceforbats.
Scatteredtreesandshrubs
3.2.9 Newlyplantedyoungtreeandshrubvegetationwerescatteredalonftheeasternembankment
(TN6,Photograph6).SpeciesincludedlimeTiliaxeuropea,beech,cherry,yewTaxusbaccata,
hawthorn,hazelCorylussp.andoak,togetherwithclumpsofwillowSalixspinthethenorthern-
easterncornerofthesite(TN7,Photograph7).
3.2.10 Incombinationwiththesurroundinggrassland,thetreeandshrubvegetationinthispartofthe

siteprovideamosaichabitatofpotentialvaluetoforagingbats.However,thispartofthesite
wasquiteexposedtotheprevailingwindandalsolikelytobeimpactedbylightspillfromthe
adjacentrailwaystationplatforms,whichmaydiminishitsvalue.
Hedging
3.2.11 Non-native hedging comprising cherry laurel occurred along the track roadwhich provided
vehicle and pedestrian access to the car park and Honor Oak Park Sports Ground (TN8,
Photograph8).Thishabitatofferedlimitedvalueasaforagingresourceforbats,buttogether
withtheadjacenttreesmayofferapotentialflightlineforcommutingbats.
Buildingsandhard-surfacing
3.2.12 Buildings and hard surfacing occupied approximately 50% of the total land area (~0.6ha).
Buildingscomprisedshippingcontainerslocatedwithinthemaintenanceyard(TN9),whichwas
notaccessibleforsurvey.Hard-surfacingalsooccurredhereandalongtheaccesstrackfrom
HonorOakPark,thecarparkingareainthenorth-westernpartofthesite(TN10,Photograph
3)andwithinthecentralpartofthesite(TN11,Photograph9).Thishabitatoffersnegligible
valuetoroosting,foragingorcommutingbats.
Ruderalvegetation
3.2.13 Disturbed earthmounds in thewestern part of the sitewere partially colonized by ruderal
species,notably thistle,willowherb,bindweedConvolvulussp.,brambles,butterflybushand
nettles (TN12, Photograph 10). Together with the adjacent woodland copse, this habitat
providesagradedvegetatedfeatureofpotentialvaluetoforagingandcommutingbats.
3.2.14 Ruderalspeciesnotablybramblesandbutterflybushhavealsocolonizeddamagedareasofhard
surfacing,inparticularalongthemetalsecurityfencingwhichdemarcatedthemajorityofthe
northern boundary and themaintenance yard (TN13, Photograph 11). The extent of these
habitatsisunlikelytobesufficienttooffervaluetobatsasaforagingresource.
3.3 EVENINGBATEMERGENCEANDACTIVITYSURVEY
3.3.1 Fulldetailsof the resultsof theeveningbatemergenceandactivity survey canbe found in
AppendixA4.Batactivityobservedduring thesurvey is illustrated inPlan3 inAppendixA2.
Surveyors1and2walkedtransectsaroundthemainfencedoffpartofthesite;surveyor3walk
atransectalongtheaccesstrackandaroundthecarpark.

3.3.2 Theweatherconditionsduringthesurveywere14°Cwith100%cloudcover,drywithagusty
breeze.
3.3.3 CommonpipistrellePipistrellusPipistrellusandsopranopipistrelleP.pygmaeuswererecorded
duringthesurvey.

3.3.5 Notablebat foraginghabitatwas identified intheeasternpartof thesitewherethehabitat
comprisedscatteredtreesandshrubsovergrassland.Theeasternendofthewoodlandcopse
andtheareaofwillowscrubatthenorth-eastcornerappearedtoprovidesomeshelteringfrom
theprevailingwind,andforagingactivitywasconcentratedaroundthesefeatures.
3.4 STATICDETECTORSURVEYS
3.4.1 AtimelineoftheresultsofthestaticdetectorsurveyscanbefoundinAppendixA4.Thelocation
ofstaticdetectorsisshownonPlan2,AppendixA2.
3.4.2 Graphsofthemaximum/minimumtemperaturesandrainfallrecordedduringthesurveyperiod
are presented in Appendix A4. Minimum temperatures ranged between 5-12°C with
temperatures fallingbelow the recommended8°Con the15thMay, and fewerbat contacts
recordedonthisnightssurvey.Rainwasnotedon12thMay,butthisdidnotappeartoadversely
impactthelevelofbatactivityrecorded.
3.4.3 Commonpipistrelle, sopranopipistrelle,noctuleandLeisler’sbatswererecordedduring the
survey.Commonpipistrelleandnoctulewererecordedmostoften.
3.4.4 Commonpipistrellecontactswererecordedduringtheemergenceperiod;11fromthenorthern
tree lineand three fromthesouthern tree line.Theearliest recordwasat20minutesafter
sunset.Thesedatasuggestthataroostsitelikelyoccursneartothesite(ratherthanfromthe
site itself) and that theapplication site falls alonga flight lineusedby commuting common
pipistrellebats.Sincefewfeedingrecordsforcommonpipistrellewerenotedduringthesurvey,
thesitesvalueasacommutingrouteisthereforeconsideredmorenoteworthy.
3.4.5 Similarfindingswereobservedfornoctule.Theywerenotedlateintheiremergenceperiodand
singlebatcontactsinferscommutingactivitybythisspecies.

4 CONCLUSIONS
4.1 SITEEVALUATION
4.1.1 AreaB isunlikelytosupportabatroostsite.OverallthehabitatwasfoundtobeofLOWor
NEGLIGIBLEvaluetoroostingbatsandthedirectimpactoftheproposalsonbatsandtheirroost
sitesisthereforeassessedasNEGLIGIBLE.
4.1.2 AreaBdoeshoweverfallswithinabatflightlineusedbycommonpipistrelleandnoctulebats.
Records during the emergenceperiod suggest that thismaybe a notable commuting route
betweenroostsitesandsuitableforagingareas.Thedevelopmentproposalsthereforeshould
seektoretainthisfunctionbyensuringappropriatelinearvegetatedfeaturesareretainedor
restoredand,wherepossibleenhanced.ThiswouldbebestachievedbyimplementingOption
2ofthelandscapeproposalsproducedbyLandUseConsultantsLtd(refertoAppendixA5).
4.1.3 AreaBwasfoundtoprovideforaginghabitatforlownumbersofpipistrellebats.Theproposals
should seek to enhance the value of the habitat for bats post development through the
implementationofanappropriateplantingscheme.
5 RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 WOODLANDMANAGEMENT
5.1.1 SpecieslistedontheLondonInvasiveSpeciesList(http://www.londonisi.org.uk)suchascherry
laurelandbuddleiashouldberemovedaspartoftheredevelopmentproposals.
5.1.2 Replacementplantingshouldbewithnativespeciesthatsupportahighinsectbiomass,pollen,
nectar and berries to provide foraging opportunities for birds, bats and invertebrates; e.g.
hawthorn Crataegus monogyna, hazel Corylus avellena, dogwood Cornus sanguine, field
mapleAcer campestris, rowan Sorbus aucuparia, guelder roseViburnum opulus,boxBuxus
sempervirens,nativeprivetLigustrumvulgare,EnglishyewTaxusbaccata.
5.1.3 Asmuchofthedeadwood(logs,wind-blowntreesandstumps)alreadypresentonsiteshould
beretained.Anylongsandroundscollectedfromtreemanagementactivitiesshouldalsobe
kept on site to provide additional habitat refuges for invertebrates and other wildlife (e.g.
hedgehogs).

5.2 TREELINES
5.2.1 Allthreelandscapingoptionswillresultintheremovalofthewesternwoodlandcopseandnon-
nativehedgerowwhichextendnorthtosouthalongtheexistingaccesstrack.Itisrecommended
thatalinearvegetatedfeaturebeprovidedhereinordertomaintainconnectivityandpotential
bat flight lines across the site. This could comprise the establishment of a new tree line or
hedgerow.Fastgrowingspeciessuchaspoplars,alderAlnusglutinosa,willowandsilverbirch
Betulapendulamaybeappropriate,togetherwithinfillingwithfruitingspeciessuchasrowan,
hawthornandelder.
5.3 BURIALPLOTS
5.3.1 Theareagivenovertoburialplotsshouldbeseededwithawildflowermixthatcontainsnight
pollinatedplants thatattractmothsandothernocturnal insects suchascampionsSilenesp,
pinksDianthussp,andknapweedsCentaureasp and low-growingwildflowers suchasbirds-
foot-trefoil Lotus corniculatus, selfhealPrunella vulgaris, lady’s bedstrawGalium verum and
hawkbitsLeontodonspp.Thesefloweringspeciesareabletosurviveandthriveunderaregular
mowingregimewhilstprovidehabitatforinvertebratesandfeedingopportunitiesforbatsand
birds.Whereappropriate,thecreationofuncutmarginsandtallfloweringherbsalongsidethe
retainedwoodlandedgeandtreelineswouldalsobebeneficial.
5.3.2 Ornamentalplantingcouldincludefloweringplantsthatoffergoodnectarsourcesand/ornight
pollinated plants that attract moths and other nocturnal insects such as campions, pinks,
lavender Lavandula angustifolia, marjoram Origanum majorana, red valerian Centranthus
ruber,ScabiousScabiosasp,ThymeThymusvulgaris,wallflowerErysimumsp,primrosePrimula
vulgarisandtabaccoplantsNicotianaalata.
5.4 MANAGEMENTOFLIGHTSPILL
5.4.1 A vegetative screen should beplanted alongsideHonorOakRailway Station to reduce light
spillage onto the site and provide sheltering from the prevailingwind. This could comprise
plantingclimberssuch ivyHederahelix,Traveler’s-joyClematisvitalba,honeysuckleLonicera
periclymenum and/or hopsHumulus lupulus along the fence line to create a green façade.
Alternatively, a tall dense hedge comprising e.g. box Buxus sempervirens, native privet
Ligustrumvulgare,EnglishyewTaxusbaccata,orWilloworatreelineofpoplars,alderorsilver
birchwouldbesuitablealternatives.

NationalPlanningPolicyFramework(2012)
TheNationalPlanningPolicyFramework(NPPF)(2012)setsouttheGovernment’snationalpoliciesondifferentaspectsofplanninginEngland.Section10paragraphs109to125detailsplanningpoliciesontheconservationandenhancementofthenaturalenvironment.Circular06/2005providesfurtherguidanceinrespectofstatutoryobligationsforbiodiversityandgeologicalconservationandtheirimpactwithintheplanningsystem.
