Members of the O’Neal Community:

This summer issue provides a wrap up of awards and recognitions in a variety of areas. Congratulations to all who were recognized and to everyone for having successful year.

We’re gearing up for the next school year and we have some enhancements in store.

You will notice is a new schedule allowing for more choices for our students and time for enrichment for both our students and our faculty. We’ve also tweaked our physical education curriculum and our athletics program. All of these changes have student introduction to sports, participation and team competitiveness in mind.

The Lower School is looking forward to having the fifth grade under their roof this year. This move will make room for our expanding enrollment in the Middle School. We will welcome Andrea Smith, our new middle school director on October 1st. In the meantime, Jim Adare will be acting middle school director and he will continue to be our director of academic studies.

Details of all of these changes and enhancements will follow in the coming months.

Have a fun and safe summer vacation!

Three rising ninth graders, all from West Pine Middle School, have been chosen to receive four-year scholarships. Gillian Munro has been awarded the Helen Pringle Holm-berg Scholarship. Chloe Hoffman has been awarded the Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship. Darby Linn is the recipient of the Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship.

The Nuzzo, Holmberg, and Bradshaw Scholars are selected based upon the students’ demonstration of scholastic abil-ity, leadership potential and strength of character. The scholarship process included an extensive application with essays and an interview with members of O’Neal’s Board of Trustees and O’Neal’s Headmaster, Alan Barr.

The Helen Pringle Holmberg Scholarship is given in honor of Helen Holmberg, an O’Neal graduate and the School’s first John Motley Morehead Scholarship recipient. Helen’s father, the late Centre W. Holmberg, Jr., served as chairman of O’Neal’s Board of Trustees. Current O’Neal students as well as students from other schools are considered. Gillian Munro, daughter of Mrs. Carol Munro of Seven Lakes, be-comes the fourteenth Holmberg Scholar. Gillian is current-ly working towards her Silver Award in Girl Scouts. She plays soccer and tennis and participates in the All-County Orchestra playing the cello.

The Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship is given by Mr. and Mrs. Sal Nuzzo in honor of Father John Nicola, a retired priest who was a beloved Latin teacher at O’Neal. Students not currently enrolled at O’Neal are considered. Chloe Hoffman, O’Neal’s thirteenth Nuzzo Scholar, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hoffman of Seven Lakes. Chloe has held leadership positions in student government, has been an active participant in the debate team and enjoys playing soccer.

The Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship is given in memory of Hannah Marie Bradshaw. Hannah spent half of her life as an O’Neal student and she loved the School as a positive place that helped her reach her true potential. Students not currently enrolled at O’Neal are considered. Darby Linn, the seventh recipient of the scholarship, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Dale Linn of Pinehurst. Also a soccer player, Darby has been involved with student government and is active with her church.

Applications for these scholarships are accepted at the beginning of each calendar year. They can be obtained by visiting The O’Neal School website.

Showing the Pioneer Spirit...The O’Neal WayTwelve O’Neal students ranging in ages from 12 to 16 and French teacher, Lyn Cagle, embarked on a short-term study abroad in the Brittany region of France. Over spring break, these students were paired with a “correspondent” of similar age and their family.

For a brief few weeks, they were completely immersed in the French culture and lived accordingly. Students were welcomed into families in and around Pont L’Abbé, near Quimper. Famous attractions such as Carnac – location of the menhirs and dolmens - or Mont St. Michel were not too far a distance to travel. After leaving their host families the students had a brief stay in Paris where they experienced all the beauty Paris has to offer.

The group was made of the following students:

7th grade – Gracie Bell, Oliva Butters and Margaux Winter8th grade – John Anderson, Megan Bloom, Tomi Lawal, Hanson Lucas, Josh Russell and William Schirmer9th grade – Madison McGuirt10th grade – Kelly Griffin, Allison Johnson

The levels of knowledge of the French language were very

diverse. Some had only four months of French class. “I was both touched and impressed by their courage and spirit of adventure ,” says Lyn Cagle. “It was a frightening thing to do - to arrive, in the dark, to families they did not know. They tried their French all the time. Not once did anyone have a complaint the whole trip. They have a pioneer spirit.”

In sharing their experiences, William Schirmer’s family took him to the beach for a “pick-up” game of soccer. Josh Russell’s family took him surfing. Tomi Lawal’s family took him to Mont St. Michel and D-Day beaches in Normandy. The family gave Tomi a wreath to place on a grave of an American soldier. “The experiences these students had with their families were so very personal,” states Lyn Cagle. “The French families gave their hearts to these students. They had not hosted Americans before and were so honored to do so.”

Megan Bloom with Mont Michel in the background.

Page 15: The O'Neal Magazine Summer 2012

Hanson Lucas got to see a professional soccer game in Quimper. John Anderson was intrigued by the open air market. Margaux Winter, Olivia Butters, Gracie Bell and their host families experienced downtown Quimper and took the bus to the indoor swimming pool. “There were vending machines that sold bathing suits!” exclaims Gracie Bell.

Allison Johnson noticed the respect the French students had for their teachers and the pride that the French people had in their country. Both Kelly Griffin and Allison Johnson decided to get their hair styled – in true French fashion. Even though Kelly enjoyed her stay with her family, her most memorable moment was reaching the top of the Eiffel Tower during her stay in Paris. Madison McGuirt enjoyed walking around and experiencing things on her own. Megan Bloom liked living with a different family

and everything it involved. “We snacked at 5pm and ate dinner later,” she remarks. “I enjoyed bonding with my family. It was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

This was the first time that O’Neal has coordinated study abroad for Middle School students. It was quite a success. The students continue to stay in touch with their host families through facebook, skyping or even playing Xbox.

The program will continue as students from France will visit O’Neal this year around spring break.

AthleticsTrack:This season saw the track team records mature with new marks struck almost weekly and the rosters saw more new members than the last 3 seasons. Savannah Merritt set a new school mile record in 5:32 and Austin Puleo made new marks in the 400m (51.33) and 800m (2:02.27). On May 18 and 19 the O’Neal varsity track teams sent their best to High Point University for the 1A/2A NC Independent Schools State Championship. Congratulations to Aleksandra Majka for a 3rd place medal in the 100h (17.2) and a new O’Neal School record; Savannah Merritt for a 2nd place medal in the 3200m (12:04.96) and a new O’Neal School record; and Austin Puleo for dual medaling in the 400m (3rd place, 51.33, a new 2nd place O’Neal record) and also in the 800m (3rd place, 2:03.76). Other O’Neal athletes set PR’s throughout the day including Mark Bonville in the 300h (51.51), Megan Bloom in the 200m (31.53), Allison Johnson in the 400m (1:20.96), Katherine Wooddell in the 100m (15.31) and 200m (30.02), in the 3200m Josh Russell (12:06.30), Tomi Lawal(12:27.46), and Kyle Flechsig (13:01.54), Dakota Merritt in the 100m (13.63), and Alexander Waddell in the 1600m (5:19.61).

Varsity Boys Tennis:The varsity boys tennis season was a complete success, especially with the results from the NCISAA – 2A State Tennis tournament in Wilmington. After finishing 3rd in the conference (Cape Fear Independent Conference) with an overall record of 8-6, the boys came together with a fifth place finish in the state tournament. The conference (CFIC) took three of the top five spots in the state tournament with Cape Fear first, Fayetteville Academy fourth and O’Neal fifth.

Leading the team were team captains senior Evan Davies and junior Garrett Klumpar. With their excellent results in doubles, both were awarded All Conference. In the state tournament, Klumpar advanced to the semi-finals before losing to the eventual state champion at #1 singles. John Ronalter won his first match before losing to another eventual state champion. Senior Caleb Wood playing his first year for O’Neal advanced to semifinals in singles, then teamed up with Crawford Liner to advance to the semi-

finals of #3 doubles as well. At the #2 doubles, Ronalter and Ryan Williams also took a first round win before losing in the quarterfinals. In his final year, Coach Don Woodfield praised the team for their effort and excellent performance in the state tournament.

Girls Varsity Soccer:The 2012 girls’ soccer team had an extremely successful season. They were 13-5-1, including a notable home victory against rival Fayetteville Academy for the second year in a row. They finished third in their conference and secured a 7 seed going into the playoffs, earning them their first home state playoff game since 2007. They defeated a very good Carolina Day School 4-0 in the first round of the state playoffs, which was their first playoff win since 2008. They lost in the second round to Davidson Day School 2-0, who would go on to win the state championship. The girls scored over 70 goals this season, and never lost a game by more than 2 goals. We had three all-conference honorable mention players, Alex Quevedo, Jackie Chamberlain, and Alessandra Tozzi, three all-conference players, Madelyn Davis, Hannah Sullivan, and Mary Dixon, and one all-state player, Mary Dixon. We graduated 4 seniors, first year player Amanda Miller, second year player Tayler Ailerson, second year player Francesca Tozzi, and fourth year player Jackie Chamberlain. We will miss them and wish them the best of luck in the future, however we are looking forward to an even more successful year in 2013.

Varsity Baseball:The 2012 season was a successful one for the O’Neal baseball squad. A first-ever state tournament appearance capped a three win conference record and for the second consecutive year the Falcons won more than they lost in non-conference contests. Highlights of the season were home victories against Harrell’s and Fayetteville Academy. In the Harrell’s game, Martin Zigovsky’s home run provided the margin of victory in the win against a team that wound up 6th in the state, while Jordan Hunt tossed a complete game one-hitter. In the victory over the Eagles from Fayetteville, Hunt’s walk-off home run completed a 7th inning rally. Seniors Jordan Hunt, Matt Schoemmell, and Zeb Viskovich provided season long leadership, skill, and energy.

Varsity Golf:The 2012 O’Neal Varsity Golf Team had a very successful season with 22 wins, 8 losses and 2 ties. This year’s very young team all led by their Team Captain and only senior, Elizabeth Hall who will be playing her collegiate golf for Converse College next season.

Despite their youth, the team was lead to a second place finish in the CFIC Conference by all conference player James Sugg and all conference honorable mention player Elizabeth Hall. The team completed it year by qualify for and play in the 2012 NCISAA 2A State Tournament at Mid Pines Resort. The year’s team was a very special group of men and women who did a wonderful job representing the O’Neal School.

JV Boys Tennis:The 2012 JV Boys Tennis Team had a very successful season finishing with 3 wins and 3 losses. This year’s team was made up of 11 7th and 8th graders so the future looks very bright for the tennis program as a whole. The highlight of the season was a 6-3 win over Fayetteville Academy only a month after losing to them 5-4. The kids showed great improvement during the season and came to practice every day ready to compete and work hard. Jack Casey was given the coaches award for his hard work and dedication throughout the season.

Girls MS Soccer:The middle school girls’ soccer team showed tremendous improvement throughout the season and was a formidable force down the stretch. It was a very young team, with only two returning players, co-captains Cydney Baldwin and Hunter Atkinson, and that lack of experience showed in their early games. The team worked hard in practice and quickly became competitive, fighting hard through to a 2-5 regular season record. The girls peaked at the right time however; surprising St. Patrick’s with a 3-0 dominating victory in the first round of the playoffs, followed by the upset of the season, a 2-1 victory against undefeated Pope John Paul II to capture the championship.

Middle School Golf:The middle school golf team had the pleasure of practicing at Forest Creek, Pine Needles, and Little River. After two losses to East Lee Middle School, they finished the season with a victory over Pope John Paul. All the players worked hard and improved throughout the season.

CAMPUS LECTUREDistinguished Duke University Professor and Consultant on Institutional ChangeCathy DavidsonThursday, August 23, 20126 p.m.The Hannah Center Theater Free and Open to the Public

Cathy Davidson is a cofounder of the global learning net-work HASTAC, and she was recently appointed to the National Council on the Humanities. She writes for Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and many other publications in the U.S. and abroad.

Davidson’s latest of over a dozen books, Now You See It: How the Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work, and Learn (Viking, 2011), was named a “top 10 science book” of the year by Publisher’s Weekly. Using cutting-edge research on the brain, Davidson shows how “attention blindness” has produced one of society’s greatest challenges: acknowledging the digital age, but operating in schools and workplaces designed for the last century. Da-vidson introduces ground-breaking ideas that will open the doors to new ways of working and learning.
