It is fundamental to promote a system approach strategy, through the creation of partnerships among the research, industrial and administrative institutions, which enable the implementation of innovative solutions for the environment, for the citizens and the development of industrial opportunities.

Italy is leading EU Market

• Environmental impact : NG is the today most ecological alternative fuel (- 23 % CO 2and -50% NOx respect to petrol; no PM and less acoustic emissions respect to diesel).

• Operating cost : NG is very appealing if compared with petrol (-55%) and diesel (-30%), referring to NEDC (ref. Fiat Grande Punto and Fuel prices in Italy - 11/2009)

• Safety aspect : NG is the most safe fuel after diesel (standard EPA)

• Practical aspects : Accessibility within the traffic restricted areas

• Future development : Technology is evolving toward compatibility with biomethane and hydromethane produced from diversified sources and processes.

The production of biomethane by the anaerobic ferme ntation has various environmentally-friendly benefits:

• Direct environmental benefits : The progressive use of biomethane will provide an additional reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions thanks both to the CO2 closed cycle and to the biogas direct emission avoided (e.g.: waste humid fraction; manure � opportunity for breeders)

• Indirect environmental benefits : potentiality for producing an effective and easily handled fertilizer which can be incorporated in soil in precise amounts (better homogeneity of digested products; better agronomic efficiency); reduction of odour nuisances (social impact)

Environmental benefits :

� Additional Reduction in CO2 emissions higher H/C ratio): – 11% respect to methane (30% H2)

� Reduction in THC and CO emissions (higher H/C ratio, complete combustion)

� Suitable for current NG Vehicles using a dedicated engine control dataset and specific materials for components in contact with H2/NG blends

HYDROGEN / NATURAL GAS BLENDS

Mixing a controlled quantity of Hydrogen into Natur al Gas or biomethane provides an additional benefit in terms of emissions reduction. This appro ach does not require a “revolution” of the engine system, but only an “evolution” based on the Natural Gas technologies already existing.

• The implementation of hydromethane technology is an innovative and pragmatic approach because it is sustainable from the cost point of view and not far to industrialisation

• The advanced technology of hydrogen/ natural gas blends (hydromethane) can offer an important contribution vs. the emissions reduction and guarantee a strong synergy with the gaseous fuels from renewable sources such as biomethane and green hydrogen

• Hydromethane technology is NOT alternative to the FC technology but it could be seen as bridge technology versus future FC technology which for the next years will be only at demonstration stage.

• Hydromethane can therefore enable the development of hydrogen infrastructure, necessary for the future implementation of electric vehicles at fuel cell

• It is absolutely essential that the country’s national government support the spreading of CNG because it will remain the most ecological alternative fuel in the next decade and can exploit the further innovation of I.C. engines fro improved efficiency

• CNG is also an important bridge to even cleaner solutions such a biomethane, which has a great potential for green house gases reduction and for meeting the EC target of 10% of renewable fuels within 2020; biomethane must me incentiveted and promoted properly at European level; system approach strategies which involve OEMs, fuel industry and public administration are fundamental

• Blends of green hydrogen and (bio)methane (hydromethane) is a further innovative and pragmatic opportunity which can offer an important contribution vs. the emissions reduction and enable the development of hydrogen infrastructure, necessary for the future implementation of electric vehicles at fuel cell.

CONCLUSIONS

• Politicians and decision makers at the national and EU level must be sensitive to these theme and consider CNG, Biomethane and Hydrogen/(bio)methane blends as integral part of the EU strategy for sustainable energy and mobility for Europe.
