• The jury system is traceable to
nine-century France and was
introduced to England by William
the Conqueror.

Constitution establishes the right
to a jury trial in all federal criminal
cases.

the same right in civil cases that
involve more than a small amount
of money. States also have their
own laws that govern jury trials.
Grand jury
As many as twenty-three people may serve on one.
There are two kinds of grand jury in The United States, which is the charging grand jury and the investigatory grand jury.
Charging grand jury
• The charging grand jury decides if there is enough evidence to bring someone to trial. If the jury decides there is enough, then it indicts the person
Investigatory grand jury
• Officials often call this kind of grand jury together in cases of organized crime or wrongdoing by government officials. The jurors are asked to approve efforts to gather evidence, often secretly
Petit jury
• Petit jury decides both criminal and civil cases.
• They can have as few as five or six members or as many as twelve.
The selection of the jurors
• Jurors are selected from civilian who is in any age between 18 and 70.
• They are selected at random and any party to the proceedings can inspect the panel from which the jurors will be chosen.

• The jurors get a responsibility when he or she is selected as a juror, he or she can go back to normal life after the case is completely finished.

• Jurors can only have the
right to question on the facts
or evidence.
• The final judge is made by judges.

How the jury system functions
• The final judge must be agreed by all the jurors in the case of petit jury.
• If the jurors can not reach an agreement, the case will be called a hung jury.
• Then the case will be handed to another group of jurors.
