The Parish Magazine of
St Stephen’s Church
Guernsey
October 2016
From the Editors
In January 2017 you could be writing this for the February 2017 issue of the St Stephen’s Parish Magazine. We are seeking to find a new editor(s). Details of the role can be found in this magazine. It is both enjoyable and rewarding but it is not for a lifetime. Healthy renewal is needed with new ideas and direction. Think about it, the job could be yours. Val and Graham Moullin
SHINING EXAMPLES
Although All Saints’ Day is officially celebrated on 1st November each year, we consider it to be an important Feast at St Stephen’s and will celebrate it on 30th October, which is the Fourth Sunday before Advent.
The origin of the Feast of All Saints in the Western Church dates to 13th May 609, when Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Blessed Virgin and all the martyrs. Their Feast has been celebrated at Rome in that church on that day ever since.
The current date of the Feast of All Saints is traced to the mid-eighth century, when Pope Gregory III founded an oratory in St. Peter's Basilica for the relics ‘of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, and of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world’. The Feast Day then moved to 1st November.
On All Saints’ Day, we have the privilege of remembering those numerous saints who have gone before us, and who are an example to us as we progress in our Christian journey. The author of the epistle to the Hebrews had exactly this in mind when he wrote, ‘Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith’ (12. 1, 2a).
May our Lord strengthen us and enable us to run the race that he has set
before us, and may we be encouraged: God’s desire is that his children
‘shine like stars in the world’ (Ph 2. 15).

CHORAL JOY Those of us who attended the evening Mass on Wednesday 7th September knew in advance to expect a slight difference, by way of choral input at some stage. On arrival we saw three cantors in the chancel choir stalls, and recognized them as Rob Harnden, John Surcombe & Elis Bebb, learning later that they sing under the collective name of Cantores Coutances. The Mass celebrated the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, transferred from the 8th September and the music was chosen accordingly. At the entrance of the priest the service began with Salve Sancta Parens by Johannes Brassart as introit, and then proceeded as normal with the cantors singing William Byrd’s Mass for three voices at appropriate points, Tota Pulchra Es by John Plummer at the Communion, and the Gregorian chant Salve Regina as recessional. The whole service flowed seamlessly, and those of us there felt we had experienced something special, as, with eyes closed, the acoustics of the church easily convinced us that we were in cathedral surroundings, sharing what worshippers would have heard over the centuries. The Island is fortunate in having singers able to perform a capella to such a high standard, and St Stephen’s is fortunate that Cantores Coutances will return for the evening Mass in December. Notice will be given in the November magazine. Jill Stephenson
NEW MAGAZINE EDITOR/S REQUIRED
Val & Graham Moullin will be relinquishing the Editorship of the Church Magazine after producing the December/January 2017 issue. We have been editors for just under four years and feel that the editorship should change on a regular basis and not become a role for life, thus giving the opportunity for new energy, direction and ideas. Healthy renewal for editors and magazine! We have been complimented on the quality of the publication but it is only as good as its contributors and we are indebted to those who have provided so much material. We have enjoyed the privilege of producing the magazine which has seen changes in our time, especially since Fr John’s arrival when, with his guidance, it has become more spiritual through his contributions and those of Fr Marc and Fr Leslie. We have been truly blessed. If you are interested in taking over or to learn more about what is involved please contact us telephone 268255; email [email protected] or have a chat at church. Fact sheets are available and we would welcome you to join us when we prepare the November issue on Friday 21st October.
We look forward to hearing from you! Val and Graham Moullin
“View from the Pew”
MY DAY BEGINS
Francis sought Christ with a burning passion that completely absorbed him.
Just the mention of the “love of God” was enough to rekindle the fire in his soul.
To offer the love of God to someone
in exchange for alms seemed to him to be a gesture worthy of the most wealthy. To think money more important than love
was for him the height of foolishness. Only love can win the kingdom of heaven.
The image of the crucified Christ
was burned in his heart and he desired more than anything else,
by the power of love, to become like Christ.
Christ was always in his sight, And his love for Christ was exceeded only by the love Christ had for him.
Pray for us therefore, St Francis as surrounded by a thousand dangers,
we try to follow your example. Pray for us that our Father in heaven
will grant us the strength we will need,
that our motives will be pure, that our lives will be filled with joy.
Cont…..
Pray that a spirit of compassion and prayer
will be granted to us.
May we imitate you in your humility, in your poverty,
and in the great love with which you always loved Christ crucified,
and all his creatures, great and small.
With you we ask this in the name
of that same Christ. who with the Father and the Holy Spirit
lives and reigns world without end
Amen Heather Le Gallez Source: Peace of Heart, St Francis of Assisi

BIBLE STUDY
If all the neglected Bibles in the country were dusted off on the same day, we would experience the greatest dust storm the United Kingdom has ever known! As a church, as an individual, as a Christian, do not let the Bible pass you by. READ IT If you have time to read your newspaper each day but not your Bible, you won’t grow. If you read it for ¼ hour a day, you will read it through completely once a year. Daily Bible reading will keep you within range of God’s voice. RECEIVE IT In the parable of the Sower, Jesus identified three unreceptive attitudes: a closed mind (the hard soil) a distracted mind (soil with weeds) a superficial mind (shallow soil) Any time you are not learning, check your attitude, because God can speak through the most boring teacher or preacher if you are humble and receptive. RESEARCH IT Study should lead to you to understanding, and studying the Bible involves asking more of the text, asking the right questions and gathering your thoughts. REMEMBER IT We often bemoan a poor memory, but what we remember is important to us and there are great benefits in memorising Scripture. It will help you to resist temptation, make wise decisions, reduce stress, build confidence, offer good advice, and share your faith with others. REFLECT ON IT No other habit will do more to transform your life than daily reflection on the Scriptures Val M Source: Dover Strait
THE CLOCK A man died and went to Heaven. As he stood in front of the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. He asked, "What are all those clocks for?" St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone who has ever been on earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie, the hands on your clock move." "Oh", said the man. "Whose clock is that?" "That's Mother Teresa's", replied St. Peter. "The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie." "Incredible", said the man. "And whose clock is that one?" St. Peter responded, "That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abraham told only two lies in his entire life." "Where's Donald Trump's clock?" asked the man. St. Peter replied, "We're using it as a ceiling fan." David Le Lievre
HALLOWEEN My six year old son was excited about choosing his Halloween costume.
“ I’m going to be the Pope”, he announced proudly. “But Ian, you can’t be the Pope, you’re not Catholic”, I explained. “You’re
Church of England.”
My son was silent for a few moments, while he considered his alternatives. “Well, is Dracula Church of England?”
A MODERN PSALM - written in Retreat
The Heavens declare the Glory of the Lord, Les Cotils proclaims His praise from every window.
The sea roars his creation in the tempest and reflects his beauty in calm dazzling sunlight.
Liners and yachts, fishing boats and ferries
plough their courses for folk to gaze in wonder at the Islands – or find food in its depths.
Trees lift their arms in praise, offering their
fruits to their Creator. The mown grass provides restful beauty to the
eyes a carpet for the feet and hay for the cattle.
Children’s distant voices, the hum of the mower, the boom of the fog-horn on a misty evening,
the wild shriek of seagulls - or of deepest silence, - all bless our ears with Your Voice.
The road, like a necklace winds along the shore glinting with diamonds of sun-twinkling windows and weaving car wheels.
Glowing red and grey roof tops shelter your children, - our brothers and sisters, made in Your Image.
From the German bunker grows the Cross, suffering upon suffering, rising above the sin of the world - to proclaim Eternal Life. Visitors to Les Cotils, relaxed and joyful, dedicated staff, caring and ever-busy, and worried students sitting exams - all temples of God and His Holy Spirit.
The Heavens declare the Glory of the Lord, and Les Cotils proclaims His praise from every window.
