WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Korean Soldiers Kill ChineseConnor Farrell- Pierrepont Staff Writer

IN A small village on the edge of China, people are abandoning their homes. A recent attack by North Korean sol-diers have left people in fear, evacuat-ing their place of residence. Soldiers in North Korea’s military were paid rarely, but when they were paid, it was low. The military took bribes from civilians in order to pay for their families. But when Kim Jong-Un, North Korea’s cur-rent leader, took over three years ago, he put a stronger force on a no-bribes policy, and as a result, soldiers had no more daily income. For their own surviv-al, they invaded a Chinese village near North Korea, robbing them of their food and money.OVER 20 villagers have been killed in several other attacks. China has tried filing complaints in response, to get North Korea to respond, but North Korea has continually defied China, its only ally in the world. This isn’t the first time that North Korea has defied the Chinese, however. At one point, they continued nuclear tests and executed Kim Jong-Un’s uncle, who proposed

commercial ties with their neighbors up north.NOW THAT soldiers are invading the border of China, walking over a frozen river and killing them for food, this could be the beginning in a long battle between the two countries.

Baltimore RiotsIona McEvoy- Pierrepont Staff Writer

ON SATURDAY, April 25, a devas-tating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the country Nepal, killing 7,500 people, and injuring more than 14,500. Since Nepal is near Mount Everest, the quake trig-gered many landslides. These slides destroy roads, making it harder to get relief to those affected areas. 2 million people were displaced, and had to move to other locations. Aid groups are still struggling to relieve the devastated areas. There is even a “Tent City” that has been set up in Kathmandu, a place nearby, to shel-ter survivors too afraid to return to their old homes. Although it is just a temporary settlement, as time passes, people fear that it may become their permanent living situation. The earthquake was the

most powerful disaster to strike the area since the Nepal-Bihar earthquake of 1934. WANT TO help? ing second degree murder. The National Guard was withdrawn from Baltimore after May 3.ON APRIL 28, President Barack Obama during a White House press conference commented on the Baltimore violence. “There’s no excuse for the kind of violence that we saw yesterday. It is counterproduc-tive...When individuals get crowbars and start prying open doors to loot, they’re not protesting. They’re not making a statement. They’re stealing. When they burn down a building, they’re committing arson. And they’re destroying and undermining businesses and opportunities in their own communities. That robs jobs and opportunity from people in that area,” he said. THERE WERE several other related protests around the country and even across the world. On April 29, 2015, protestors marched through New York City, blocking off traffic in the Holland Tunnel and West Side Highway. More than 100 people were arrested. In Denver, Colorado, anti police brutality protests were held. Eleven people were arrested after police used pepper spray on the protestors. There were also protests in other cities such as Albuquerque, Boston, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, Oakland, Philadel-phia, Seattle, and Washington DC.

Self-Driving TruckJake Linsalata- Pierrepont Staff Writer

THE FIRST self driving big-rig hits the road in Ne-vada. It’s name is “Inspiration” and it is not only used for driving, but for business. It was created by Daimler Trucks, and it was made to inspire other companies to make trucks that can make deliveries without the need of a driver. The truck is currently on the road, and is almost done in the testing stage of production. The company isn’t making deliveries yet, but company CEO Brian Sandoval says that this car is for other companies to toy with and develop.

parents don’t want their kids to get the MMR vaccine because they believe that it leads to Autism, a mental condition that makes it difficult for people to communicate or form relationships with others. As a matter of fact, some parents are even protesting the MMR vaccine! THE PEOPLE that don’t get the MMR vaccine could pose a threat to people who actually do. They could spread the measles virus to others. Some people think that to solve the problem, the gov-ernment will make vaccines mandatory for everybody. But, the government affects everything nowadays, like health care, seat-belt laws, and even the Internet. If they make a vaccine law, this would only give them more power. So, what could possibly be done about this controversial issue? We’ll have to find out.

ON APRIL 13, 2015, East Rutherford restaurant Caffe Capri was bro-ken into and robbed by a criminal who has a record of commercial burglaries, Tylar Paz-Lusardi, 24. Lusardi broke into the restaurant with an ice scraper, stole $200 and a small handgun. The other busi-nesses that the criminal has robbed includes Blimpies, and a nail sa-lon. Lusardi also has failed to report to court, and has been charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, which is something that is used to make drugs. Lusardi is being held in Ber-gen County Jail in Hackensack, and his bail is $30,000.

Hillary Clinton Rian Chowdury- Pierrepont Staff Writer

ON SUNDAY, April 12, 2015, Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that she is running for U.S. President in the 2016 election as the likely Democratic nominee.“I’M RUNNING for President,” she declared near the end of her 2-minute, 15-second announcement video. This announcement has begun what might end up becoming the least contested races for the Democratic nomination.CLINTON’S CAMPAIGN manager, John D. Podesta had sent emails to long-time Clinton associates alerting them about her candidacy. These emails were sent minutes before the announcement video was released. Mr. Podesta said that Mrs. Clinton would meet soon with voters in Iowa and host a formal kickoff event some time in May. This is truly another major breakthrough in U.S. history, as Mrs. Clin-ton could potentially become the first female President!

Amtrak Train Derailment Rian Chowdury- Pierrepont Staff Writer

ON TUESDAY, May 12, 2015, an Amtrak train was derailed in Philadel-phia, killing eight people and injuring over 200 people. The train was said to have made a sharp turn at a speed of over 100 miles per hour, more than twice the speed limit. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, the sharp left turn had a speed limit of 50 miles per hour. Many people believe that the derailment was caused by the lack of train control, which can reduce the speed of the locomotive. The system was installed on the train, but not on the tracks, hence why it may have not work. Investigations are ongoing, so the cause of this wreck will soon be determined.

SPORTSBaltimore GameNick Brady- Pierrepont Staff Writer

“YOUR ATTENTION Please! After consultation with Baltimore City Police Department, tonight’s game between the Orioles and the White Sox at Oriole Park at Camden Yards has been postponed,” read the Jumbotron at Orioles Park on April 27, 2015. Yelling, raiding, throwing things at cops, and the destruction of cars and shops is what was hap-pening in Baltimore during the time of the game. Cops surrounded the Orioles stadium, making sure that attendants got home safely, after the game had been postponed, although most gates were already closed. The next day, they postponed the second game of the series. The games were rescheduled for a doubleheader on May 28th - a whole month away. The third game in the series was played Wednesday, April 28th, but was to be closed to the public. There was an estimated $1,000,000 loss in parking, food, and tickets. From food and parking alone, they lost about $940,000. All of those who bought tickets for the next four games that have been closed, will be not be able to get a refund, but they can use their tickets for future home games. It was not a total loss, because in addition to the coaches and players, some staff and media were on hand Wednesday (plus extra loyal fans outside). Considering that on average, the professional baseball team, the Orioles, pays the players altogether $715,345, a million dollar loss can be made up.

Stephen Curry MVPMiles Dellaha- Pierrepont Staff Writer

STEPHEN CURRY has won the Most Valuable Player award for the 2014- 2015 season. Curry plays for the Golden State Warriors and his unlikely dominance has led them along with budding star Klay Thompson to a postseason drive. Curry scored 23.8 points per game on average this season, and has a 44% 3 point shooting effi-ciency. The MVP racked up 7.7 assists per game, and fans loved him on and off of the court. He accepted the award on April 14, thanking his teammates, coaches, and his father. Stephen is one of the most popular players in the league, and his jersey sales are number 2 be-hind Lebron James. Steph seems to be humble, kind, and talented, creating one of the best combinations for an MVP. The award is not just given out for sheer talent. The NBA MVP award is received by honorable and talented players that don’t put anyone down. This fully encaptures Curry’s personality, making him a perfect MVP can-didate.

Pacquiao vs. MayweatherMiles Dellaha- Pierrepont Staff Writer

FIGHT OF The Century? More like Disappointment of The Century. On May 2nd, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather engaged in what was hyped to be one of the best fights of all time, and surely the best of the century. May-weather came in with a record of 48 wins and 0 losses, and Pacquiao had 57 wins, 6 ties, and 1 loss. The fight generated over 500 million dollars in revenue, but was otherwise seemingly worthless. Many say Mayweather did not box well, and didn’t attack much. He only landed 68 punches, and his foe landed 98. A lot of people expected a knockout or a big fight, but the fight went to the judges’ score card, and Mayweather got a win. Boxing fans are controversial over who won the fight, as Mayweather blocked more, but Pacquiao put on a better show. One thing many do agree on is that the fight was a disappoint-ment. It didn’t live up to hype, was boring, and a waste of money.

Dear Gertrude,

Now that the temperature is getting warmer everyone is starting to wear more weather appropriate clothing. I’m uncomfortable with wearing shorts

to school because I don’t like my body. Do you have any tips on how to feel better about wearing shorts?

Sincerely,

Insecure

Dear Insecure,

There is no need for you to be insecure about wearing shorts. Everyone has different body types, and they’re all beautiful. If YOU feel good about how

you look, don’t let anyone else change that. If you need to get a pair of shorts to fit better, try getting alterations or wear a cute belt. Just remember, don’t let

others make you feel bad about wearing something that you like.

xoxo,

Gertrude

Dear Gertrude,

I’ve been feeling left out from my friends’ group. I’m always being shoved away by my “friends” and they’re always ignoring me at lunch. Recently,

when I’ve said something to my friend, she says, “STOP!” in a really annoyed voice. I really don’t want to be considered annoying and I also don’t want my

friends talking about me behind my back. Please give me advice on what to do because I don’t want to be considered annoying.

Sincerely,

Annoying?

Dear Annoying,

Well, your first option would be to have a heart to heart with your friends. Tell them how you’re feeling, and maybe they’ll make an effort to include

you more. If they still make you feel left out, you don’t need them. Find new friends- friends that make you feel good about yourself. Don’t take rudeness from

them or anyone else! You deserve to be happy!

xoxo,

Gertrude
