THE PEAK DISTRICT TRIATHLON AT CHATSWORTH 2015 General race information

RegistrationThis is located in the marquee adjacent to the transition area. It will be open on Saturday from 14:00–17:30 and on Sunday from 05:00–06:30.

This is your first port of call — you will not be able to enter transition without your race numbers.

YOU MUST SHOW PHOTO ID

• Home Nation Association members MUST show their current year membership cards (without this you will be charged £5 for a day licence).

• Non-Home Nation Association members must show a form of photo ID, e.g. driving licence. All non Home Nation Association competitors have already paid for their day licence.

Race packYour race pack will contain:

• 2 x race numbers – one goes on your back on the cycle, one on your front for the run

• 1 x bike sticker – a small square sticker for your bike

• Number tattoos – see instructions opposite for how to apply

• Swim cap

• Electronic timing chip and ankle strap – you must wear this on your left ankle

You will also receive an XME goody bag. We will have race belts and a small range of clothing available to buy including a limited edition Xtra Mile Events cycle top.

Race briefingThere will be a single race and safety briefing for both the standard and sprint distances and it will take place in the transition area at 06:30. Attendance is compulsory.

Changing facilities and baggage storageThere are no changing or baggage facilities at this venue, please lock bags in your car.

Race numbersRace numbers must be clearly visible for the cycle and run. Use safety pins or a race belt to attach your numbers. If wearing a race belt, please ensure the number can be seen through each timing point — during the cycling phase a number must be displayed on your back, during the running phase a number must be displayed on your front.

You will be issued with 3 number tattoos — one number for each arm and one for your left calf.

These are easy to apply and are like children’s tattoos – see details below for information on how to apply them. There will be tubs of water and cloths outside the registration area for you to use.

Please do not try to apply the tattoos on top of any oils, gels or lotions as they will not work.

Sprint competitors’ numbers will have a yellow strip across them so that you know who you are racing against.

The tattoos are easily removed using baby oil or similar.

Swim Standard: 1000m / Sprint: 750mDISINFECTED WETSUITS ARE COMPULSORY.

To protect the integrity of the River Derwent, ALL wetsuits MUST be disinfected prior to getting into the water. Once you have disinfected your suit you will be given a wristband that will give you access to the river.

There will be bins of sterilising fluid close to registration.

NO WRISTBAND = NO SWIM

You must wear your coloured swim cap.

There will be kayaks and craft on the river to provide safety cover. If you get into difficulty, turn onto your back, raise one arm and wait for a canoe to reach you.

If for any reason the race needs to be stopped, the signal for this will be 3 long blasts on the air horn. Safety craft operators will advise you further.

There are risks from swimming in open water, particularly if you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or have any cuts or open wounds.

Do not swim if you are unwell or have recently been ill, please cover any open cuts with waterproof dressings, and avoid swallowing the water.

The swim has a deep water start and you will enter the water from the bank to the right of the river bridge. This is a short walk from transition. The swim director will start the race with one long blast on an air horn.

You will swim downstream towards the weir keeping the buoys on your right hand side. The turnaround point will be at buoy 4 for the sprint and buoy 6 for the standard. You will then swim back upstream, again keeping the buoys on your right hand side. Immediately after you have gone under the bridge you will exit via the pontoon on the right hand bank of the river. There will be marshals here to help you out of the water if you need assistance.

It is about 250m from swim exit to transition. You may find it helpful to wear a pair of old trainers, flip flops (or similar). There will be an opportunity for you to clean your hands with anti-bacterial liquid as you return to transition after the swim.

Cycle Standard: 39km / 24.3 miles Sprint: 20km / 12.5 miles / 1 lapThe cycle section of the race takes place on open roads and starts and finishes at transition.

Follow the signs - the route is clearly signposted with fluores-cent yellow signs. Obey the Highway Code. Competitors will not be allowed to start without a fastened helmet. Reminder: during the race do not put on or take off your helmet unless your bike is on the racking. Drafting will not be permitted.

Key points

• This is a one lap course for both standard and sprint distances.

• Leave Chatsworth by the track and join the minor road, please note this is a foot down stop and be cautious when joining the road.

• Sprint triathletes turn left after the long climb out of Beeley, standard distance athletes continue straight on (this will be signposted).

• You must obey the Highway Code, your safety is your responsibility. Be careful on descents and bends.

You are responsible for your own safety at all times. Do not take risks and ride within your capabilities.

Run Standard: 10km / 6.4 miles Sprint: 5km / 3.2 milesThis is an out and back up to the Hunting Tower for the sprint, with an extended section around the meadow, lakes and gardens at the top of the hill for the standard. See page 19 for map.

Key points

• Follow the fluorescent yellow signs.

• Please be mindful of other park users along the run course. If you meet walkers or farm vehicles please be respectful.

• There will be a water station at the sprint turnaround point near the Hunting Tower. Sprinters turn round here. Standard distance triathletes continue around the extra loop and will pass the water station again 5km later.

• There will be a litter drop zone by the drinks station; please use this. Anybody seen littering will be disqualified.

The King of the Hill prize will be awarded to the fastest male and female times from T2 exit up to the Hunting Tower. This is applicable to both sprint and standard triathletes.

TransitionThis is located on the field close to the main car park. You will not be able to enter transition without showing your race numbers and having your bike sticker on your bike. Competitors only are allowed in transition. This is for security reasons.

Transition will be open from 05:30 – 06:30 for set up. Please use the secure competitor entrance to put your bike and equipment into transition. You will need to place any race equipment (e.g. bike, cycle/run shoes, etc.) in your bay in transition. Please find your race number marked on the relevant bay, and rack your bike and place equipment at this spot. Please ensure your kit does not stray into transition aisles, and be mindful of other competitors.

Walk through and familiarise yourself with the routes to/from your bay, to/from the entrances and exits of transition prior to starting the race. Remember to leave your bike in a low enough gear, ready for the cycle section. Reminder: there is no cycling in transition – mount/dismount your bike at the mount/dismount point.

Transition will close at 12:30. Please collect your equipment by this time. After this time we cannot guarantee the security of your equipment.

Timing chip and strapThis must be attached to your ankle (this is where it has been designed to work at its optimum and fixing it anywhere else will jeopardise you getting your race times). You must wear your race strap throughout the whole race. It is advisable to wear the chip UNDER your wetsuit leg to prevent it being lost.

Please return your chip to the marshal at the finish line. You will not be allowed to remove your bike without returning your chip and ankle strap. If you have lost your timing chip you will be charged £10 to remove your bike from transition.

The chip timing system will give you detailed results including all your splits and a printout of your results will be available at the finish line.

Timing pointsThe timing points we use between stages are:

• Swim: from when the horn starts the swim to when you enter transition

• T1: from when you enter transition to when you leave transition on your bike

• Bike: from when you exit transition on your bike to when you exit transition to start the run

• T2: from when you enter transition to when you leave transition for the run

• Run: from when you exit transition to start the run to when you cross the finish line

• Run split: at the turnaround point by the Hunting Tower

Relay teamsEach member of a relay team will need to pass on the electronic timing chip and ankle strap to the next team member at transition. As soon as the chip has been attached the next team member may begin their section of the event.

The swimmer must have removed their wetsuit prior to handing over the timing chip.

Bike mechanic serviceTeam Race Force will be available on race day offering free bike safety checks and answering all your race day questions. They will be fully stocked with essential spares should you forget anything – this will incur a small charge.

Bike rescue serviceXtra Mile Events provides a bike rescue service. If you are out on the bike course and suffer e.g. a mechanical fault such as a flat tyre, and you are too far out to be able to walk back to transition, we will send a vehicle to come and rescue you. All you need to do is wait for a BTF Motorbike Official to come by, and flag them down. They will contact the race director, who will organise for the vehicle to come to your aid as soon as possible, and take you and your bike back to transition.

Please do not request assistance and then use an alternative means to return to transition.

Withdrawing partway throughIf you withdraw from the event at any stage before the finish, please tell a marshal. This is for your own safety (and saves us spending hours searching for you out on the course!).

If you cannot complete a stage, but wish to continue with the other disciplines in the event, you may do so, but you will be disqualified from overall results. You MUST inform the race official of this as soon as you are able to do so.

First aidFirst aid is available on site, and a mobile ambulance crew is able to attend to casualties out on the course.

If you need medical assistance, marshals have contact numbers for the medical teams.

PenaltiesThis information is designed to help you enjoy the race and to not incur penalties. Any penalties issued will be displayed in the timing tent and any queries addressed to the race official.

Triathlon sport guidanceCheck the FAQ section of the Xtra Mile Events website, and the Triathlon England website for general information.

Drafting Competitors are not permitted to draft off other competitors during the cycle section of a race. The draft zone for sprint and standard distance events is 7m (approximately 3 bike lengths) x 3m, and starts at the front edge of the bike’s front wheel. Remember to keep left at all times when you are not overtaking. If you are overtaken it is your responsibility to drop out of the overtaking cyclist’s draft zone.

Helmets Helmets used for events must meet the minimum standards of ANSI Z90, SNELL B90, EN1078 or equivalent – a CE mark is not an approved standard. Helmets must be on and securely fastened before removing your bike from its transition space and remain fastened until you have re-racked your bike.

Outside assistance

Athletes must not receive outside assistance from anyone who is not part of the event team, including being passed drinks or helped with equipment. The only exception relating to outside assistance is for medical issues, or when safety may be compromised.

Transition area Each athlete has their own space within the transition area for their equipment. You are not permitted to mark your space, and your equipment must not hinder other athletes as this will be considered ‘unsporting impedance’. When leaving transition for the cycle leg, do not ride your bike until you have reached the mount line. Similarly when returning to the transition area you must be off your bike before the dismount line.

Race numbers Athletes need to wear their race numbers at all times during the cycle and run sections and they must be clearly visible. During the cycle section the number needs to be displayed at the rear and during the run it needs to be displayed at the front. The race number provided by Xtra Mile Events must not be cut down or altered in any way. The transfer tattoos should be used in conjunction with the official race number and are not considered a replacement.

Unsportsmanlike conduct Xtra Mile Events race officials, event volunteers, spectators and other competitors should be treated with respect and courtesy. Please comply with requests from the race official and event volunteers.

Abusive and aggressive behaviour and language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Course You are required to follow the course outlined in the race booklet and the race briefing. Not completing the specific course or the right number of laps will result in you being disqualified. It is your responsibility to know the course for each element and the number of required laps.

NudityCompetitors who are publically nude at any point of the race risk disqualification. You cannot therefore get ‘completely changed’ in transition. Nudity also includes being topless during the bike or the run, or having front fastening tops unfastened.

Mobile phones, MP3 players and other similar equipmentThese are banned during events, including in transition. Using headphones at any time during the race can lead to instant dis-qualification.

LitterThe discarding of gel packs and other items is becoming a major problem at all triathlons.

We now have a very strict NO LITTER policy.

Gel packs — use them but bring the empty sachet back with you.

Do not drop water cups unless you are at a drinks station or marshal position.

ANY LITTERING WILL BE PUNISHED WITH INSTANT DISQUALIFICATION.
