President’s

Message By Terry Jackson

On The Cover Mitch Andrus invited the FBCC over to his house in Mills River, NC to see his hand built1948 MG TC/Q before it moved on to its new owners. All of those present were beyond impressed with his handiwork and attention to detail, from his chemical treatment of hand made copper name plates (to look aged) to his custom cast aluminum tranni cover (complete with MG logo), and everything in between. See more pictures of the drive and Mitch’s cars in this issue.

Well here we go again…..COVID concerns. We should be proud that our board is very engaged about situations like this. It’s a frustration for us as it is for all of you. And to that end, you’ll note in this newsletter that we have cancelled the September monthly club meeting at Silver Bay. Arghhhhh. After a good discussion, the board decided to not meet this month. One reason is that neither the Pres. nor VP can be there. But in the end, it was mostly COVID. We are concerned about our members health. We are also concerned with the uptick in COVID occurrences and its impact on our health care workers and system. So we thought cancelling yet another inside, close-proximity meeting was the prudent thing to do. THANK YOU for your understanding and for still working around all this COVID stuff to keep our club as active as we can be, and yet still growing as we navigate through all this!

And for October, our monthly meeting will be a picnic at our VP, Charlie’s, farm. It’s a beautiful site. October should be fabulous weather-wise. A picnic is relatively COVID-ok, since its outside and we can keep our social distance. And the club is picking up part of the tab for food. Can’t beat that! So please plan on being at the picnic instead of our monthly in-restaurant meeting in October.

A couple more musings, if you’ll allow. 1) For those who are insured through Hagerty, did you look at the email with the link to pictures from the Detroit Woodward Cruise? Woodward Ave. was the 1st paved road in the US. It supposedly was THE place to go cruising back in the day. And 20-30 years ago a couple folks got the cruise going again and it is now a HUGE event. Over 1M people. Motorized transportation of every description either driving or on display at a park. The ‘cruise’ covers 15-20 miles one way. Drive part of it, all of it, or none of it. Anyway, the link from Hagerty had some great pictures of this year’s Woodward Cruise to give you a feel for what it’s like. If you love cars (new, old, hot rod, you name it) and you want to experience a great couple of days….the Woodward Cruise should definitely be on your bucket list. 2) Consider joining Vintage Triumph Register. Even if you don’t have a Triumph you can join. It’s a way to expand your

interest in British cars and meet more folks (or read about them). It’s a national club of car enthusiasts. VTR has several events that you might be interested in attending. And if you spend a certain amount annually with The Roadster Factory, they’ll pay your VTR dues.---No this is not a paid advertisement, just additional info. 3) Last, we’ve all got to continue to THANK JUD for the great work he does at either organizing drives, or just pushing us to get out and enjoy our cars and this beautiful part of the country we live in. He makes it pretty darn easy to get out and drive---just look for the emails and show up! Thanks Jud!! Safe motoring!

Gerald Petter shares an amazing clip of a Merlin

Engine running on a “test stand”

At the approximate age of 16, I was in the Air Training Corps (RAF cadet thing) where we learned to shoot a bolt action .303, tie numerous complicated knots of which only the reef and granny are remembered, camp in a rainy waterlogged field at Runnymede (Magna Carta), do astral navigation from a blister in an Avro Anson/practice blind instrument flying in a Link trainer, AND, strip and rebuild (with help) a RR Merlin engine. I won't mention the practice drills which the British consider essential to defeat whirling dervishes running amok. We never had to run the Merlin which was on a test stand inside our meeting house but I hope the attached short video amuses and elucidates. Very good language instruction for Alabama members.

And David Benson shared the news regarding a

Morgan 3-Wheeler Comeback

Morgan's new 3 Wheeler will be powered by a Ford-sourced three cylinder engine. After Morgan discontinued the 3 Wheeler and marked the end of its production with the limited-edition P101 last year, the British automaker confirmed the eccentric three-wheeler will be replaced by a new model. Less than a year later, testing for the successor has begun. Previewed in teaser images, the new 3 Wheeler will boast "an all-new design, adventurous character, and significant engineering advancements." Heavy!

FBCC Logo Cleaned Up

and Improved By Scott McCombe

The FBCC has used its logo for many years and it has served us well. However, it was showing its age with “stretch marks” and unsatisfactory distortion. The club’s registered logo has recently been professionally reformatted and updated to meet today’s more rigid digital standards. The Union Jack is now correct, the coarse edges have been smoothed out, and the “R” properly placed to reflect our legal status as a club with a registered logo. If you should want to use our logo for any purpose, please find both the official jpg or png files available on the FBCC Dropbox. We also have the *.ai file in full vector format which must serve as the master file going forward. My recommendation is that each of us discard all previous versions in favor of these excellent reformatted master files.

Boring Car Trivia: You

Want Your Bristol

Saucepan Blue? We hope you enjoy this monthly series derived from the 2020 Sniff Petrol book entitled A Medium-Sized Book of Boring Car Trivia.

#13) “Many years ago a homeless man wondered into the Bristol Cars showroom in Kensington and asked to be shown around one of the cars on display. The showroom staff humoured him, listing the car’s specs and answering his questions until eventually he announced that he would like to order one, but only if they could make it the same colour as a small, blue saucepan which he produced from a carrier bag. “Of course we can, sir,” laughed the staff politely. “I’ll leave that with you then,” muttered the man, handing them the saucepan and walking off the premises. A few hours later a lady arrived asking if she could write the deposit cheque for the new car just ordered by her boss, the eccentric billionaire who liked to see how staff in ritzy places reacted if he came in dressed like a tramp. Bristol got his business for being the only place that gave him the time of day and he duly collected his new car, sprayed the same colour as an old saucepan. The company later took the car back into stock and advertised it for sale, listing the colour as Saucepan Blue.”

Mystery Car: Mid 60’s

Gordon-Keeble By Gerald Petter

This was an easy one for an old-timer like me. In 1958, Percy Crabb and Peter Jopp won the 2 litre class in a Peerless GT (Triumph engine). After my uncle died racing at Goodwood, I lived with Percy and his wife for a while----very kind of them. I have Percy's racing record from Kieft/Tojeiro/ Peerless. Not quite sure when but somewhere around this time, Gordon left Peerless and partnered with Keeble. They had a wonderful tortoise logo and used a US V8...don't remember what make except likely not Chrysler as I think only Jensen had that. Anyway.....7-8 years ago I flew from and to Southampton/Dublin and had read that G-K owners had their reunion at Southampton airport where the cars were made. I vaguely recall they let them parade down the runway. It's a very small place and was fairly new when I was there and I think all original buildings were gone. I did look for plaques or memorabilia but didn't find any. By all accounts the G-K was a pretty decent car, it's demise probably due to the usual suspects.

Welcome New Members By Charlie Blakely We welcome new member Steven Wygand, a resident of Greenville who owns a 1979 MGB. Steven acquired his car from his father, who was a member of the FBCC in years past. This is our first second-generation member? He looks forward to meets and rides once the car is up for it. Right now he's dealing with wiring issues. We welcome him to the FBCC!

His Illness Didn’t Stall

This MGB Restoration! Link provided by David Benson http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/buytext.htm ...But these all pale into insignificance given Terry's story who despite being completely blind reassembled an abandoned restoration All by Touch. Shortly after completing his first MGB he drove it to my place in Solihull. He admitted that building up to the visit he was getting more and more nervous as it was a round-trip of 340 miles, but it was trouble-free.

If that wasn't enough Terry then bought and sold several other MGBs and a Stag, some as runners and some for restoration. One of these was another abandoned restoration, this time of a Mk1 roadster, and again completed it to gain its MOT at the first attempt. That shell required a lot of remedial work by his body man, but that gave him the chance to deal with all the ancillaries, fixtures and fittings.

However between writing the 2011 article and it being published, Terry was rushed to hospital one night after suffering a stroke, and during the tests they discovered that not only did he have a previously undiagnosed hole-in-the-heart that had precipitated the stroke, but also had myeloma which is a type of cancer where abnormal plasma cells develop and multiply uncontrollably in the bone marrow. It is a measure of his indefatigability that when telling me that he had family members with each of his major problems i.e. visual impairment, hole-in-the-heart and cancer, he joked that he had "copped for the lot". The cancer led to a series of chemo treatments which made him feel very unwell, and two painful sessions of bone marrow transplants. But while each did initially improve the results of the many blood tests he was having, they would simply worsen again, despite each course of treatment being more severe than the last. His treatments led to periods where he was not able to work on the cars, but he forced himself out into the garage whenever he could, even in the depths of winter.

When he got the fully painted roadster body back reassembly started in earnest and became his prime objective. He did have more help on this one, Essex Area people helped him with the wiring and screen, I had the quarter-lights rechromed and rebuilt them and did work on his fuel pump and wiper motor, and

THE OPEN BONNET Page 6

FOOTHILLS BRITISH CAR CLUB

a local pal helped him with a lot of odd jobs such as cleaning and painting components. But again the bulk of the work by far he did himself. He was really pushing himself as he felt that 2015 was going to be his last year of ‘reasonable health’ (his words), and was determined to finish the car. It all took a very long time, but by the end of June 2015 he finally got it finished to the point of getting its MOT at the first attempt, and to say he was ‘over the moon’ is a huge understatement. Typical of his impish humor, he sent me a photo of the MOT saying "I’ve just been

handed this regarding the 67, can you try and work it out for me please" and it took me a moment to realize just what it was!

At the end of July he was on holiday with his family when he was suddenly taken ill with pneumonia, rushed to hospital, where he passed away on 1st August peacefully and for the first time in a long while pain-free. It came as a great shock, we lived 150 miles apart so rarely met up in person. When I said I was going on the 100mph plus zip-wire in North Wales in May he booked as well, but unfortunately had to cancel at the last minute due to a very short-notice hospital appointment. I realized that as time went on he may not be well enough to make the trip and so was preparing to go and see him, but the end came so suddenly and unexpectedly I didn’t get the chance, which I shall always regret.

Over the seven years I knew him we exchanged over 3000 emails, sometimes 20 per day, together with Skype calls and him sending me several hundred photos and pieces of video, while he painstakingly reassembled his cars and we sorted out problems together. We had many laughs along the way. Terry was the most amazing and inspiring person I have ever met, and I shall miss him. He was just 49 years old, and leaves a wife and 2 children aged 7 and 5.

Sept 26 Distinguished

Gentleman’s Drive By Joey Jordan For several years now my son has participated in an annual Spring event called The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride, an annual motorcycle charity ride to raise money for men’s health. My son rides his Triumph. Participants are also encouraged to “Ride Dapper” (lots of photos online if you’re curious what that means). Each ride is sponsored and organized locally and, according to my son, a ton of fun. For an overview, here’s a link to the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride website with background info, photos, etc. https://www.gentlemansride.com/about/

So what does that have to do with the FBCC? This coming September, for what I think may be the first time, the same organization is holding The Distinguished Gentlemen’s DRIVE. https://www.gentlemansdrive.com/

Instead of motorcycles, this will be a separate event for vintage cars. It seems made to order for our club: a lot of fun, a worthy cause, good publicity, and a perfect excuse to go for a group drive on a nice Fall day.

Graham Robson,

1936 – 2021 By Scott McCombe

Many of you will recall meeting Graham Robson at the 2014 VTR Convention held in Dobson, NC. In particular, I remember a very fun interview with mild-mannered Harris Mann who will long be remem-bered as the primary designer of the TR7. Graham Robson was the author of numerous books and a featured guest at many Triumph events in UK and the US.

When remembering his no-holds-barred approach to automobile commentary, I think Classic & Sports Car said it best. Graham became “a full-time independ-ent motoring writer, researcher and author in 1972.

That word ‘independent’ cannot be stressed too highly because whatever his links with the manu-facturer of a car he was writing about, his re-search was always thorough and he never pulled his punches.”

New Monthly Series:

What Have You Been

Working On?

By Jeff Sholl

What we seem to have here is the poster child for HOW NOT to take care of the front end on your LBC or any car for that matter. I brought my TR6 into Jack’s garage to find out why my steering resembled that of the Queen Mary navigating in rough waters. All I was doing was steering, correcting, back and forth. It got a bit concerning and I cut down on my trips!

As we looked down at the rack while turning the steering wheel the whole rack moved back and forth, not a good sign. So it was decided to get new rack mounts. While we were at it we did a more intensive testing of the tie rod ends. As you can see from the picture above the bellows on the drivers side was destroyed and we were thinking the other side wouldn’t be far behind — and it wasn’t!!! Soooo, into the parts catalog to order new hardware. Rack mounts, inner and outer tie rod ends and some bits to take care of the problem.

Now that my parts arrived it was off to Jack’s garage to start tearing apart my front end. As I say that I couldn't have handled this project myself. For all you that haven’t been to Jack’s garage it is a great source for of knowledge and experience. I’ve been extremely lucky to have one of our members to lead me through this project. Bob Moore with my slight assistance got through this change out in a days time. Here’s Bob attempting to get the rubber bellows over the rack connection. He wasn’t looking for divine intervention! But we could have used it at this point.

After finding that getting the bellows on with our greasy rubber gloves and the greasy rack was futile we changed course and removed the rack so that we could work on the bench. This was now way over my pay grade! At this point I was the wrench and parts gatherer. Below you can see the inner tie rod end covered in grease. Trying to work in these tight

(Continued on page 9)

The editor wishes to thank Jeff Sholl for both his will-ingness to tackle some TR6 front end repairs and his desire to share this project in The Open Bonnet. Please continue to provide your own stories to [email protected] no matter how big or small.

Page 9: THE PEN BONNET

quarters was impossible with that green slime making handling of everything a challenge.

We had to remove the rack mounts and disassemble the steering column universal joint. Once we got items loose and out of the way the rack came out easily. So it’s over to the bench for a complete inner tie rod ends and bellow rebuild. Man I’m glad Bob knew what he was doing. Here’s the rack on the bench with one side completed and the other ready to rip off the old bellows and install the new inner tie rod and bellows.

What are we looking at here? Starting on the left we see the inner tie rod covered by the bellows, the

(Continued from page 8) steering column U joint, the 2 rubber rack bushings and the passenger side rod and old bellows. Below is the completed rack. Yahoo!

Now to the installation of the rack and the attaching of the outer tie rod ends and steering universal joint. We completed the installation with very little money going into the cuss bucket. The steering is back to feeling like new. A special thank you to Bob Moore for helping me with this project and to Kirk Fisher and the FBCC for allowing us to use the garage. Jack’s place is a special asset that is available to FBCC members.

Our completed assembly. Look — no grease. What a drastic change from what we started with. The change in handling now is superb ! I’m ready for our next cruise.

published in the September 2021 issue of Classic Motorsports magazine. It is just the latest feature article on this amazing feat of engineering and restoration. Want to see more? Come to the HHI Car Showcase. I have it on good authority that the designer, engineer, restorer, and owner will all be on hand to provide “guided tours”. Congratulations to the Merrills!

WHAT ELSE IS THERE? Once again, glad you asked. Scott has the Car Showcase apparel orders under control. Curtis has the FBCC dinner set up with three entrée choices – menu to be presented in the next issue. Mike has gotten the oil leak mats. Steve has completed the caravan route planning. Wayne, well, he is just enjoying retirement and getting the Bugeye ready for the journey to HHI.

Speaking of getting ready, I have noticed through communication and witnessing some preparation that many of you have already started to prepare your LBCs for the Car Showcase. Hat’s off to you as one can’t start too early.

What about the rest of us? There are several ways in which we can help. First and foremost – are you a detailer? Have you readied vehicles for a concours event? Are you willing to share your knowledge and skills with the club members? If so, please contact me and I will generate a list of “volunteers”. Secondly, will you be at HHI? If so, would you be able to help prepare the vehicles for the showcase? Again, please let me know. I will match you with a “needy” LBC owner.

I have been notified by Michael Dyrenfurth, HHI Car Showcase Manager, that some 40 to 50 awards will be presented for the Saturday Car Showcase! That is a lot of awards. Crank it up FBCC members! Let’s be the car club that the others WANNABEE!

BTW, I AM AN HHI WANNABEE THERE!

We are two months from having FBCC represented at the Hilton Head Island (HHI) Car Showcase. Saturday, November 6, 2021, is the big day! What’s the big deal you ask? What’s in store you ask? So glad you asked.

FBCC is one of the featured car clubs selected on a national basis. This is not happenstance! Steve Chase planted the “seed” in 2019. He told the HHI folks about this wonderful British car club hidden away in the upstate. The rest, as they say, is history.

We have a field of ten cars selected for the event. Those ten represent four marques (Austin Healey, Jaguar, MG, and Triumph) and ten different models across the four marques. The committee knew that we had some outstanding vehicles in FBCC. Our field proves that! Lately however, some of the vehicles have received HHI and national attention. Does that make the rest of us “Hilton Head Wannabees”? Not in the least. But let’s recognize those who have recently been put in the spotlight.

HHI ATTENTION: Who but our very own Open Bonnet team Karen and Scott McCombe. Yes, this “shy and retiring” couple have been thrust into the HHI spotlight. HHI sent out a notification that several of us received today. It is a notification for the Car Showcase. Boldly leading the Italian vehicles and presented before the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Fiats, Maserati, etc. Congratulations to the McCombes!

NATIONAL ATTENTION: 9,000 RPM red line in a 1966 MGB GT? Impossible you say? Not when your name is Zach Merrill! Yes, it is Zach and Libby Merrill with their Honda S2000 powered 1966 MGB GT. This beauty was first exhibited at the 2020 Southeast British Car Festival in Dillard, GA. Since then, it has been featured in several nationally published articles.

The FBCC Loves to

Drive Their LBCs! This

Breakfast Run Needs To Be Repeated! By Jud Chapin

What a wonderful ride! Six intrepid souls took off in the first cool of a September morning in search of fun roads and a delicious breakfast. Both searches were successful.

Jud and Sandy left the Brown Building at 8 in Jud’s red MGA Mk.II and headed west on the Foothills Scenic Parkway (Hy. 11). At the old inn and school-house (intersection of 11 and 25) they were joined by Tom Buto (red TR-6) and Mike barefield (red TR-6). Is there a patter developing here? The red caravan continued west to where 276 splits off toward Caesar’s Head. There, anxiously waiting to hit the road were Dennis Somerville (charcoal TR-6), Bob Moore (finally topless Miata) and Doug Hansen. The pattern dissolved.

Actually as we arrived, Doug was headed east like a bat out of hell on 276 in a, well, sort of TR-4. It didn’t sound like a TR-4 four-banger and in my rear view mirror it didn’t really look like a TR-4. All became clear when Doug spun around and rejoined the group in his ’64 TR-4/GT6 Coupe. This one-of-a-kind Triumph is a marriage between a TR-4 roadster body, a GT6 hardtop and a GT6 2-liter powerplant. It’s not only cool looking but it sounds great and runs like a rabbit.

After oohing and aahing over Doug’s creation we all headed up over Caesar’s Head toward Brevard. We took the detour over Becky Mountain which turned out to be a pretty nice drive once the very slow pickup got to his driveway and we were able to let the horses out a bit. Down Becky’s backside and back on the road to Brevard and the Sunrise Café. Just like last time, the service was good, the break-fast was tasty and the companionship was superb.

After breakfast I asked the group what route they wanted to take back. Tom suggested taking the East Fork Road over to Rosman and coming back down 178. None of the rest of us had ever driven that route so the vote was unanimous- “Let’s follow Tom!” Well, that turned out to be the right decision and a

fantastic drive. Tom put the spurs to his TR-6, my MGA just kept up while Sandy hung on to anything she could grab, and Dennis did his best to park his TR-6 in the boot of my car. On the few semi-straight stretches we caught glimpses of the remaining tail-end Charlies cresting the hills as we swooped around the next curve. I only broke the rear end loose 2 (or maybe 3) times. I couldn’t see Tom’s face but I sus-pect his grin wrapped around from ear to ear. What a drive!

We got to 178 and 11 and pulled into the Holly Springs store to stretch legs and compliment Tom on such a great route. While there we were treated to watching three of SC’s motorcycle finest pull over a work van. Lots of blue lights but we never found out what all the commotion was about. We told some more war stories, kicked some more tires and headed our separate ways.

More breakfast drives will happen.

Jack’s Place Rocks! By Tom Buto

As most of you know, we have resumed the open shop sessions at Jack’s Place on the 3rd Saturday of each month. In June and July we had a good turnout but the August event was a record for attendance since we reopened this year. Unfortunately, we were so busy doing stuff that we forgot to do the signup sheet that we usually do but I think there were about 25 members in attendance and the parking lot was nearly filled with British cars. Several brand new members were part of the group.

Mark Riesch was first on the four post lift with his Jaguar. It seems that Mark’s air conditioning conden-sate line was plugged and difficult to find without the benefit of a lift. Once on the lift, Mark found the blockage and was able to get it flow freely.

Jud Chapin brought his MGA and was trying to de-termine why his exhaust system was hanging so low. It turns out that one of the hangers was missing a bolt and nut that must have rattled loose during one of his many drives. Easy to spot once on the lift and easy to fix.

Max Gravlee, a brand new member, brought an MGB that was turned over to him by his dad. He wanted to get a good look with the help of some members that were familiar with the “B” and there was quite a crowd around and underneath it. The MGB looks like a good solid car with a few issues that need to be addressed. We look forward to Max returning with his MGB to address some of those issues.

Although we did not get the car on the lift, Matt New-ton, another brand new member, brought a very nice MGA coupe that he recently bought and had shipped

to him from Massachusetts. I think Matt said it was an older restoration but it looked very fresh on the outside, inside and under the hood. It also seemed to idle perfectly and it sounded great when he pulled away. Matt is going to be converting the MGA to wire wheels sometime soon and is looking for some ad-vice and help from any of you who have done it. I think we can do that at the shop on some day other than our open shop day. I’ve volunteered to open up the shop whenever Matt is ready. Let me know if you want to be involved in that conversion.

All the while we were gathered around the four post lift, Jeff Sholl and Bob Moore were working on Jeff’s TR6 front steering. It appeared that they got every-thing done that they had intended but I was too busy operating the four post lift to see exactly what they were doing. I think it was mostly fine tuning the front end.

Our next open session at Jack’s Place is scheduled for September 18th and Eddie Saunders is the Safety Supervisor. Mark that date in your calendar and let Eddie or me know (see garage supervisor schedule)if you want to get on one of the lifts to get advice, do some work or just look.

Benson’s FALL CAR

EVENT CALENDAR By David Benson

September 4 the Atlanta British Motor Car Day will take place at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. This is a joint effort by 16 Atlanta area British car and motorcycle clubs and has grown to be quite an event. https://atlantabritishmotorcarday.org/

September 11 There are many car shows coming up that are not specifically oriented to British cars but can be a great place to visit and network with other clubs. On September 11 the Autolawn returns to Hickory Art Museum in Hickory, North Carolina, and has been attended in the past by a number of FBCC members. http://www.theautolawn.com/. September 11 The following weekend another Atlanta area event takes place on September 11th in Norcross, Georgia. This is the 20th year for the Atlanta British Car Fayre, and the featured marque this year is Austin Healey. https://www.atlantabritishcarfayre.com/home-1.html

September 11 will also be the date for a large antique car show right here in Greer at the Greenville Tech Greer campus on Locust Hill Road. This is hosted by the Antique Automobile Club of America and it appears that exhibiting a car is limited to AACA members. https://aaca.org/images/meet_brochures/2021/2021_SE_Fall_Brochure.pdf September 9-11 is the Antique Automobile Club of America holds its southeast region Fall Auto Fair at the Charlotte Motor Speedway; https://www.charlotte-autofair.com/ This is not a show as much as a large vendor market for cars, tools, parts, restoration services and accessories. It’s quite a spectacle but is dwarfed by the annual meet each fall in Hershey, Pa.

September 23-26 the Peachtree MG Registry will host Brits in the Valley which will take place in Columbus, Georgia. The Peachtree folks are great at organizing related drives and events at their shows and this promises to be another great one. https://peachtreemgregistry.wildapricot.org/Brits-in-the-Valley . September 25 BCCWNC is also resuming the Autumn in the Mountains car show and this year it’s on September 25 at a new venue. It will take place at Mills River Brewing Company and early registration is open. This is a great opportunity for a fall drive in the mountains to spend time with our sister club in the Asheville area. Early registration is open and closes on September 10th. https://www.bccwnc.org/autumn-in-the-mountains-car-show/

Taken (with some editing) from Wikipedia.

September 30 The Six-Pack Trials will take place on September 30 to October 3 in the Richmond, VA area for fans of TR-6’s and TR250’s. https://forums.6-pack.org/articles/trials-aa/542355-2021-6-pack-trials-flyer The event is centered in Colonial Heights, south of Richmond which is also home to an awesome tractor museum if you have a chance to visit

October 2 the Southern British Car Club will hold their show in Chattanooga, Tennessee although details are not fully developed at this point; https://www.southernbritishcarclub.net/

October 9 The FBCC is also planning a fall picnic get together at FBCC vice President Charlie Blakely’s property on October 9th which will be a good time to reconnect with your fellow members in a great setting. Watch the FBCC email for further details of these events, and weather changes. There is always member interest in club drives to different locations and if you would like to host one, we are always looking for more.

Cars and Coffee has returned to the upstate after COVID, meeting in Easley on the second Saturday morning of each month and the fourth Saturday at Michelin in Greenville.

October 6-9 On your bucket list should be the Fall Hershey meet which is where 9,000 vendors come together for a mammoth event for antique, vintage and specialty car owners. https://hershey.aaca.com/eastern-division-fall-meet/ This is a bucket list event that you should attend at least once in your life.

October 16 Cars on Kiawah returns to its namesake island in South Carolina near Charleston. This is only 5 years old but is located in a great spot in Ocean Park on Kiawah Island. https://www.carsonkiawah.com/.

As we go further into the winter months and 2022

(Continued from page 17) watch for returning events that aren’t scheduled yet at this point. December is usually quiet for us after the annual Christmas party but look for Jud’s Polar Bear Drive again in January. The Carolina British Classics show hosted by the Midlands British Car Club in Columbia had to cancel their show this year but we look for it to return next spring. The Broad River Club had to make adjustments to their show in Shelby this year and we look for them to return as well as the Gathering at Shelton Vineyards. We also look for the FBCC overnight trip to return to Dillard, Georgia in the fall of 2022 as a biannual tradition for our club.

October 23 The British Car Club of Charleston will hold their 36th British Car Day on October 23rd, and who wouldn’t want to spend an October weekend in Charleston? https://www.britishcarclubcharleston.com/BritishCarDay2021.php

November 14 Denny Somerville is organizing a return of the Veteran’s Day Drive in conjunction with the British Car Club of western North Carolina. This will be held on Sunday, November 14th and is always a great drive to honor our veterans. Watch for further details as we get closer to that date

There are several British or marque specific events coming up in the fall around the region. The EURO car show at Verdae golf course in Greenville

is unfortunately cancelled this fall but there are many others on the schedule this fall. If you happen to be

in these areas or are looking for a road trip excuse, please check out these opportunities.

There are resources to locate car shows and related events all around the country. These include https://justbritish.com/calendar/ although it’s loaded with advertising, and https://mossmotoring.com/event-calendar/ The MG experience and its affiliated sites for Jaguar, Triumph, Austin Healey, etc. has an events calendar

https://www.mgexp.com/calendar/ Details for all events are subject to change or cancellation so check out the host site for current information. Oh, ...And one more: https://www.hemmings.com/calendar/

It’s time to clean up that car, gas it up and head out on the road for some great riding in some great weather. Happy motoring!

For Sale: 1960 MGAFHC 1600 - I started to restore this MGA coupe just before we decided to down size houses. The car was completely dismantled and found to be completely heavy rust free. There is some surface rust but nothing that requires major reconstruction. It was originally bought in California and later titled in Sonoma, AZ, hence the almost to-tal lack of rust. I had the chassis sand blasted and powder coated, new floorboards (marine plywood), brakes and many other new parts. Engine rebuilt (rings, gaskets, etc.), head professionally refur-bished, no re-bore was necessary due to low mileage of 49,000. Many new parts including SS exhaust. Original tool kit is also included. I started to have the body media blasted and primed but decided not to show the car’s lack of rust. If interested, give me a call and I can give you the full story. I am asking $10,000 as this car will give you back more than your original investment once restored. The car is in Chesapeake, VA. Contact Mike Jones at (757) 287-5166.

Wanted: Spitfire 1493 cc engine. When I bought my 1977 Spitfire in 1993. the seller assured me the en-gine had “recently” been rebuilt. About 20,000 miles and 28 years later, it’s still running strong, but I don’t know for how long. Rather than pull a perfectly good (for now) engine from a running car, I’m hoping to find a 1493 engine from a 1975-80 Spitfire to re-build as an eventual replacement. Would be nice if the crank turns, but I’m not picky. I’m hoping a re-build will be a good winter project. Contact Glenn Larson at [email protected] or 804-350-6820.

Generally, the FBCC garage is open at 9am on

the third Saturday of each month. If you would like

to put your car on the lift, need some help with

some mechanical issue, or just want to hang out,

come and join us. An FBCC Safety Supervisor

(wearing the orange vest) will be responsible for

notifying the general membership and identifying if

a specific activity will take place on that day,

opening the shop and closing it down, and making

certain that the proper safety procedures are

followed.

The FBCC encourages its members to become

garage certified so that they may take advantage of

this wonderful facility at their own convenience.

Being garage certified will not necessitate that you

be responsible for open garage Saturdays. Guests

are always welcome to enjoy the fun, but the FBCC

For Sale - Gill’s 1973 MGB Bonnie Gill is offering Jim Gill’s nearly completed 1973 MGB car for sale initially to the FBCC membership. Jim began this rebuild project many years ago and in 2018 a team of FBCC members under David Benson’s encouragement offered to assist in its completion.

The car now requires minimal work by a competent mechanic/restorer to be fully road worthy. The car features a rebuilt engine ((Hap Waldrop assisted) and a Datsun 5-speed transmission. The electrical system has been replaced with a full set of relays and all new wiring but some electrical work is needed for the fog, brake, and backup lights.

The Panasport style VTO wheels and tires and the interior upholstery and carpeting are all brand new. The fit of the doors and vent windows needs further adjustments and neither the new rag top nor repainted hard top has been fitted. The rear end (probably the differential) needs repair.

Bonnie knows that the new owner must be mechanically inclined and love to work on MGs for this to be an acceptable sale. The asking price is set at $7,500 to encourage a quick sale.

Please contact Bonnie at 864-270-9292 or via email at [email protected]. She has a list of the work performed by the FBCC and details regarding the items still needing attention.
