(Cover Story)

At the winter Board of Management Meeting (BOM) meeting of PASSAR, compatriots present unanimously approved a recommendation to establish the SAR Benjamin Franklin Chapter in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, some of whose members are pictured on the previous cover page. Since that charter was granted by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), membership boasts twenty-two compatriots who have elected chapter officers eminently qualified to grow the chapter even more. On Saturday, March 17, 2018, the Benjamin Franklin Chapter hosted its dedication of their Charter from NSSAR and installed their officers in front of PASSAR state dignitaries from five chapters, DAR representatives and guests at the Franklin Club.

The Benjamin Franklin SAR Chapter is the first established chapter in approximately fifteen years and becomes the second chapter in District 11.

President’s Remarks

By Greg Shively, PASSAR President

he February Board of Management (BOM) Meeting graciously hosted by the General Joseph Hiester Chapter induced lively discussion regarding a proposal to make a donation to support SUMMERSEAT, a historic house in Morrisville, PA. which was owned by two signers of the Declaration of

Independence and briefly served as Washington’s headquarters in December 1776. The members of the BOM voted to donate $1,000.00 toward repairs needed for the house. The fact that the donation was not approved unanimously underscores the need for every chapter president or his designee to attend State BOM’s. Every chapter needs to have a say in how PASSAR funds are raised and spent. Attendance by chapter representatives is also important at the BOM in May which also includes The Annual Meeting of the State Society. I would like to point out that attendance at all the activities of the BOM and Annual Meeting in Valley Forge is not necessary. A compatriot can pick or choose as to which activity he will attend. If a compatriot chooses to only attend the business meeting due to time or other constraints that is perfectly acceptable. If possible, compatriots should plan to attend the Memorial Service and the Saturday Evening Banquet which includes the Installation of Officers, remarks by President General Larry Guzy and award recognition. The Spring BOM in Reading also approved my proposal to codify PASSAR Awards to Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members and chapters, recognizing their help to increase PASSAR membership by referring potential new compatriots. I ‘ll take PASSAR Greetings to the Pennsylvania State DAR Conference in Gettysburg on April 6th and with me a supply of leaflets explaining the program to the Daughters in attendance. This program has the potential to exponentially increase PASSAR membership. PASSAR and its chapters are among the most active in the country and I have been proud and honored to serve as your State President during 2017-2018. The support of compatriots from every corner of Pennsylvania is very gratifying. Thank you all very much, and I hope incoming President Ray Prusia and his team will receive the same tremendous support that I’ve enjoyed. Yours in Patriotic Service to Our Country, our Commonwealth, and the SAR. Fraternally, Gregory J. Shively PASSAR President

Proposal to Support Summerseat (Morrisville Historical Society) presented by VPG Louis Raborg Summerseat an historic house in Morrisville, PA was Washington’s headquarters in December 1776, shortly before their relocation to Washington Crossing. The house was also home at various times by Robert Morris and George Clymer, two Pennsylvania signers of the Declaration of Independence. Although it generally has been well-maintained, the house needs structural repairs that its owners, the Morrisville Historical Society, estimate would cost not more than $20,000. Upon a motion by Sean Teaford that was seconded by Bill Hayes, many of the voting Compatriots approved a donation of $1,000 to the Morristown Historical Society that would be designated specifically to the repair of Summerseat. Eighteen members were in favor and three opposed. VPG Raborg thanked the Pennsylvania Society for their donation to Summerseat and added: It is in our Societies’ objective to preserve those places of historical significance of the Revolution and Summerseat is a project worthy of support from our Societies. With your donation and that of the Maryland and New Jersey Societies and of the PASDAR, the four thousand dollars will certainly help with their needs in keeping up the building. A check can be made out to the Historic Morrisville Society and sent to, Diane Hughes, their treasurer, at 143 Osborne Ave. Morrisville PA 19067

• Veterans Committee – Lanny Patten noted streamlining of process to award service medals. Details to be published in next BOM booklet.

• President Shively thanked the Gov. Joseph Hiester Chapter for their hospitality and honored David Loose, Jr. and Sean Teaford with Challenge Coins at the close of the meeting

PASSAR Secretary Needed Compatriots, A few months ago, I sent out an email seeking a PASSAR Assistant Secretary that would take over the full-time position in about 6 months or sooner. We are looking for Compatriots with an understanding of the communication necessary with our Chapters, the State Society and the National Society in Louisville. Of course, PASSAR supplies computer equipment, printers; reimbursing stamps, supplies and other “out of pocket” expenses. A knowledge of OFFICE 365 is a big plus and the ability to use Microsoft programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook. A typical month requires the printing of certificates (about 10-15/month) and plastic membership cards and updating the database with State numbers. Other items require communication with PASSAR chapters about their membership, reinstatements, drops, address changes, transfers in/out, and deaths reports. BOM attendance (4 per year on the first weekend in Feb-May-Aug-Nov) is required, but not mandatory, and the meeting notes proceedings are a joint effort with the 3rd VP with distribution to the attendees and chapter presidents. If you or someone in your chapter is interested, please let me know. James Hall PASSAR Secretary [email protected] 610-696-7788

Wreaths Across America

By W. Clay Dawson, PASSAR 2nd VP

n Saturday, December 16, 2017, members of the Governor Joseph Hiester Chapter took part in the annual “Wreaths Across

America” event held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Compatriot Robert Hillegas (President, Governor Joseph Heister) was joined by Compatriots Nevin F. Miller and W. Clay Dawson in honoring our Veterans. For the twelfth consecutive year, Compatriot Floyd Turner served as Ceremony Coordinator and Master of Ceremonies.

The ceremony at the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial was stirring from beginning to end. Particularly moving was the flyover by World War II aircraft, the heart-rending address by Gold Star Mother Ms. Chris Vaccaro, the placement of the seven Ceremonial Wreaths (one for each military branch and POW/MIA), and the playing of Echo Taps. Despite frigid temperatures and gusting

winds, the audience was warmed by the tremendous sense of patriotism and pride so evident. Immediately following the Ceremony, attendees joined an estimated 10,000 volunteers to place nearly 30,000 wreaths on the resting places of fallen heroes: an increase from 16,000 wreaths from last year, second only to the number at Arlington National Cemetery, and within reach of the 38,000 needed!

Each volunteer who placed a wreath on a Veteran's grave was encouraged to say that Veteran's name aloud and take a moment to thank them for their service to our country. To quote Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America, “We are not here to ‘decorate graves.’ We're here to remember not their deaths, but their lives.”

For more information on the Wreaths Across America program and to learn how you can help, go to http://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/

Flowers in the Forest The Floo'ers o' the Forest (are a' wede away) is an old Scottish song that was brought about by the Scots losing their battle of Flodden (1513). It is a story of a young lass who lost someone she loved so dear. We, as brethren, take this time to remember those who have gone before us with our hopes and wishes that they, like their patriot ancestors, will not be forgotten.

“A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.”

Spiritual Principle #1 Spiritual Contentment

Being a Chaplain, I am interested in what we say about our spiritual lives, about our practice of religion. Our lives are usually an interesting indicator about our claims. And it becomes more obvious where our deeper religious convictions lie, whether we says anything or not.

If we talk with a person for a while, we can often get a pretty strong impression about deep seated convictions. This is the way we are. We all pretty much do what makes sense to us, or is familiar to us. And we operate, run our lives on the basis of these convictions.

That is what these 8 Spiritual Principles are about, what they point toward.

In the 1600's, a Puritan Preacher, Jeremiah Burroughs, wrote a small book entitled, The Rare Jewel Of Christian Contentment. Spiritual Contentment , for us, might seem to indicate a life of religious practices and service. We might think that only Priests, Pastors and Ministers serve God full time. That is just not so. All of us are creatures of God and all of us are called to serve Him, all of the time. That does not necessarily mean that we serve in “the Temple”, in the “Church building,” in special monastic service and the like. It does mean that we serve all the time of our lives, serving our God in whatever we believe we have been called to do.

That “whatever” for us is the hard part. For some, it means teaching, for others it means being a soldier, for still others it may mean digging ditches, construction, building maintenance, teaching, governing or serving in a restaurant. Some may be called to serve as Ministers in Churches. Sometimes it takes all of our lives to find out just where we fit in. And when we fit in, it can be a wonderful feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment, contentment and belonging. For us, the General Anthony Wayne Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, it means we have a specific calling here in western

Pennsylvania: to serve as protectors of the principles of Liberty and Freedom, as teachers of those principles to our fellow man, and as models of those principles to society around us. It also means we are examples to Compatriots in the General Anthony Wayne Chapter, in the state – PASSAR, and at the national level -the National Society SAR. It also means that we are examples to our families, as well as our neighbors, friends, government and the world.

To do that we have to have certain things settled within our own minds and souls. We need to look at a bit of history to get at the full meaning of the first principle, “Spiritual Contentment”. The Founders of what has become the Sons of the American Revolution gave a lot of consideration to what they perceived to be

the basic principles. They considered just what was necessary for one to be so committed to Freedom, Liberty and Revolution that he would pledge “his life, his wealth and his personal honor” in order to gain the freedom from the Oppression of England. I am sure the founders imagined what may have been in the hearts and souls of men and women to be able to commit themselves so fervently to a revolution, not to mention what it took for the men of the Second Continental Congress to agree upon, pass and put their signatures to such an inflammatory document like the Declaration of Independence. Willingly Pledged their LIVES, their WEALTH and their PESONAL HONOR.

I am sure that the founders even pondered what General George Washington looked for in his commanders and by extension in his troops. But most of all, the founders were interested in a society of men committed to a proper celebration, remembrance, and memorial to those who went before us and the principles for which they gave their very lives so that we may be free. I am sure they wanted men who were committed to

passing on, to teaching the basic principles of Freedom and Liberty to generation upon generation, hundreds of years or more away from the original struggles and battles.

Those men had to be committed. They had to be settled in their minds and souls, to be so convinced in the core of their being they would find some of their fulfillment, some of their reason for being, in taking the pledge that we recite at every meeting of the SAR.

CONTENTMENT – FULFILLMENT of our very souls – SETTLED in the core of our being – that the principles of Freedom and Liberty are right. Period. Right for us, right for ALL men and women, everywhere that we can share the message. The First Spiritual Principle, Spiritual Contentment, is not completing a bucket list, a list of things to do. This is not turning over a new leaf. This is not making sure our lives fit into a certain mold that looks good. This is being satisfied that the things to which we have committed our lives are, indeed, settled. There is no question about it, we are committed, standing firm. We may have some questions about what we have agreed to, what we are to do, but we are settled, grounded. On that issue, there is no question. We have NO Reservations about it. It is settled, period. The things that matter to us most have been settled. They are the foundation of our being. We are satisfied and spiritually content. We do not jump around going after every new teaching or philosophy as the wind blows. We are settled, content, satisfied with the things that give our lives meaning. And there is no changing that. We rest in those things. We are spiritually content, and so we can be counted on to do our part, carry our weight, to do what is necessary to the best of our ability in order to reach the end goal, whatever the cost. Again, for us, the General Anthony Wayne Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, it

means we have a specific calling here in Western Pennsylvania: to serve as protectors of the principles of Liberty and Freedom, as teachers of those principles to our fellow man, and as models of those principles to society around us. It also means we are examples to Compatriots in this Chapter and in the state – PASSAR, and at the national level -the National Society SAR. It also means that we are examples to our families, as well as our neighbors, friends, government and the world. May God bless us with the Spiritual Contentment this world so desperately needs. We live in a world of people Spiritually Malcontent. The world, our nation desperately needs us for guidance in how to be spiritually content, how to live good lives, how to live so that our great nation can continue teaching the principles of Freedom and Liberty for generation after generation. May God give us the strength, the fortitude and the Spiritual Contentment to be true to the Pledges that we recite at every meeting: The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the Pledge to the SAR and the Recession, so that we can and will defend these United States against EVERY Foe. May God Bless the SAR and the General Anthony Wayne Chapter in our great calling. Spiritual Contentment is the first in a series of Spiritual Principles, all of which go together to make the Sons of the American Revolution tick, to move ahead toward our goals, to model and teach America and the world what it is to be at peace, to be content with and grow within a country that values Freedom and Liberty for all.

God bless you all.
