Sunday Bible Reflection by Dr. Scott Hahn
The Liturgy this week continues to instruct us in the elements of discipleship. We’re told that even the most humble among us have a share in the mission Christ gives to His Church. We’re not all called to the ministry of the Apostles, or to be prophets like Elisha in today’s First Reading. But each of us is called to a holy life (see 2 Timothy 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:3). At Baptism our lives were joined forever to the cross of Christ, as Paul tells us in today’s Epistle. Baptized into His death, we’re to renounce sin and live for God in Christ Jesus. We are to follow Him, each of us taking up our personal cross, as Jesus says in today’s Gospel. That doesn’t mean we will all be asked to suffer a martyr’s death. But each of us is called to self-denial, to the offering of our lives in service of God’s plan. Jesus must be elevated to first place in our lives—above even our closest bonds of kinship and love. By Baptism, we’ve been made part of a new family—the kingdom of God, the Church. We are to proclaim that kingdom with our lives, bringing our fathers and mothers, and all men and women to live as “little ones” under the fatherhood of God and the kingship of the Holy One. We do this by opening our hearts and homes to the service of the Lord, following the Shunnamite woman’s example in today’s First Reading. As Jesus tells us, we’re to receive others—not only prophets, but also little children, the poor and the imprisoned—as we receive Christ himself (see Matthew 18:5; 25:31–46). As we sing in today’s Psalm, we are to testify to His favors and kindness in our lives. We’re to hold fast to the promise—that if we have died with Christ, we shall also live, that if we lose our lives for His sake, we shall find our reward, and walk forever in His countenance.
Tema do 13º Domingo do Tempo Comum

MASS & TOWN HALL MEETING
WITH CARDINAL TOBIN
All parishioners are invited to join
Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of
Newark, and the priests of the West
Hudson deanery, at a Mass to be offered on Thursday,
September 7, 2017 at Saint Stephen’s Church, 676
Kearny Avenue, in Kearny. The Mass will begin at
7:30pm.
Following the Mass, refreshments will be served in the
lower Church Hall of Saint Stephen’s (Hedges Hall) and
there will be an opportunity to meet Cardinal Tobin.
The Cardinal will also host a “town-hall” discussion at
that time during which he will take and answer questions
from those assembled.
WELCOME VICTORIA HERNANDEZ
OUR NEW CHOIR DIRECTOR
& ORGANIST
Starting the weekend of July 8/9, Victoria Hernandez will take over Dr. Matthew Harden’s position as parish Choir Director/Organist. I’ve been very impressed with her background and experience and I’m confident that she will become very quickly an integral member of our faith community and ministry team. Please welcome her with the same warmth and love that is so characteristic of this Parish. Fr. John
IS YOUR MARRIAGE VALID?
If you were married civilly, that is not in the Catholic Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid marriage. Some couples believe that a marriage before a Justice of the Peace or a non-Catholic minister is valid. For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic
Church, the marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon along with 2 witnesses. (There are limited interfaith exceptions with proper permission.) We invite you to speak with one of our priests if there are any questions or if indeed you wish to validate your marriage. The process can be very simple and your marriage will now be blessed by the Church.
WELCOME FR. DICK MROZ
As of July 1st Fr. Dick Mroz will be living
at St. Cecilia Rectory. I have invited him
to help out with the pastoral ministry of
the two parishes. When he turned 70
over a year ago he retired from his
ministry as a Hospital Chaplain at Englewood Hospital
and Medical Center and now has the freedom to choose
where he would like to serve. Fr. Dick is originally from
Wisconsin. He served for 4 years in the USAF as a
mechanic/crew chief on the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft in
Tucson, AZ, Vietnam and Thailand. After military service
he worked at Ford Motor Company for 5 years as a
draftsman/designer in Dearborn, MI. I met him in 1985
when he joined the Community of God’s Love in
Rutherford, the charismatic community that developed the
Mexican mission where I served. In New Jersey He
worked for 2 years at Mid-town Drugs in Kearny stocking
shelves, delivering prescription drugs to residents in the
area and serving as an all around “go-for”. He entered
Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall
University, completed his theological studies and
received a Master of Divinity degree. He was then or-
dained a priest for the Archdioceses of Newark by Arch-
bishop Theodore E. McCarrick in 1992. Fr. Dick has
served in St. Aedan’s in Jersey City, St. Philip the Apostle
in Saddle Brook, St. Joseph’s in Oradell, St. Leo’s in
Irvington as well as for two years as a pastor in Wisconsin
and for three years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
before his five years as a Hospital Chaplain in Englewood.
I’m sure that he will be a great blessing to both St. Cecilia
and Our Lady of Sorrows parishes. Please welcome him
with the same warmth and love that you welcomed me.
