How did the Philippine – American War start?• The Treaty of Paris (1898)-Spain sells the Philippines to US for $20million

• Aguinaldo declared Filipino Independence

• President William McKingley ignored Aguinaldo’s government-Installs a US colonial government w/US troops

General Otis protested, but Aguinaldo replied that the Americans were not arrested but merely detained because they were found within the Filipino lines. On February 2, General MacArthur protested the presence of the some Filipino soldiers within the American lines, The Filipino soldiers withdrew and MacArthur was satisfied.

The Filipinos, though lacking in arms and munitions, fought valiantly throughout the country.
