6:00PM at Mallberry Suites, Cagayan de Oro SCENARIO: β- blockers substantially decrease mortality and re-infarction after an Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). Well-designed large clinical trials prove that routine β-blocker therapy leads to symptom improvement, reduced hospitalization and improved survival among patients with heart failure and systolic dysfunction. However, β-blockers can induce bronchospasm; its use traditionally contraindicated among patients with obstructive airways, specifically bronchial asthma. ISSUE: Among patients presenting with both Acute Exacerbation of Bronchial Asthma and Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), should β-blockers be given (or withheld) as part of the AMI protocol?
