Why is there a need for research? Why a Philippine Studies Program?

PSGSA is dedicated to the reinstatement and invigoration of the study of Philippine culture, and Filipino American history, and language at the University of Michigan. Our long term goal is to promote the creation of a center for Philippine Studies that will attract scholars and students for the purpose of continuing a lost-tradition of the academic exploration of Filipino history, culture, anthropology, sociology and health. In establishing this Philippine Studies program and center, the hope is that it will further the ultimate goal of preserving and understanding of Filipino, and Filipino-American Issues within the context of American History and Culture, and within a global context. To further these goals this student organization works on several projects that fosters closer ties with community groups and on campus through youth mentorship programs, and educational programs, and through fundraising. PSGSA also works closely with other student groups, faculty and staff on University of Michigan’s campus that promote Multicultural programming that highlights and respects all racial and ethnic groups and furthers understanding between all groups. Membership to our organization, and to any of our sponsored events are open to any University of Michigan student

Many U.M. Professors, and alumni have been directly involved with the U.S. Colonial Government in the Philippines. The most influential was U. Michigan Anthropology ProfessorDean Worcester. The following photos are examples of the thousands anthropological photos taken by Prof. Worcester during his numerous visits to the Philippines between 1890-1913.The Worcester Collection is housed at the University of Michigan Library Special Collections

What has PSG accomplished so far? Co-Sponsored with other campus units the following guest lectures:

April 27,2002: Tapestry: A Evening of Music, Dance and Performance by Filipino and Filipino Americans.

Winter 2002: With support from the Filipino Community $5,000 was donated toward teaching Asian Studies 492: A Class that was also sponsored by SSEAL, Southeast Asian Studies Center, International Center.

April 17, 2001: Ana Labrador, Professor of Museum Art Studies University of the Philippines. Lecture: “Museum Studies in the Philippines & Community Museum Development”

April 16, 2001: Ana Labrador, Professor of Museum Art Studies University of the Philippines. Lecture: “Locality, Language, and Identity: the Creation of Community Dictionaries in the Central Bontoc.

March 14, 2001: Christine Leano, Director of FACES Lecture: “Toxic Legacies”: A lecture and documentary showing on the toxic waste on former U.S. military bases in the Philippines.

January 2001: Ambeth Ocampo, Historian and Columnist for Philippine Inquirer: “Food for Historical Thought.”

June 19, 2000: - Francisco Nemenzo, President, University of the Philippines, 1999. Lecture: “The Philippines: Deterioration of a Nation-State?” Nemenzo lectured on his experience as “A political detainee during the period of martial law (1972–74) in the Philippines.”

June 1999: Dr. Evangeline Capili, MD. Retired Physician. Presentation: “Medical Missions in the Philippines”July 1998 : Exhibit commemorating centennial of Philippines-U.S. relations : "Thinking of 100 Years: Historical Notes From Filipino Americans in Ann Arbor" was at the Ann Arbor District Library on S. Fifth Ave. July 11-31. July 1998: Michael G. Price, Botanist and Friend of Filipinos. Lecture: Postcards as Historical Documents.1997: Multicultural Presentations: An Effective Educational Tool, presented by Benita Murel, Ph. D. Director Michigan League Programming Office. Oct. 1995: Roger Bresnahan, a Professor in the American Thought and Language Dept. at Michigan State University: Lecture: “Themes and Contexts of Philippine Literature.” March/August 1995 : "Why Are You Saying That?": Intergenerational Communication Among Filipino-American Families. 1995: Film Presentation: Ora Pro Nobis (Pray for Us), directed by Lino Brocka.

What are the Philippine Studies Initiatives?

A Grassroots effort to publicize the importance of Philippine Studies

To eventually establish a center for Philippine Studies at the University of Michigan

To encourage the hiring of tenure track faculty whose research specializes on the Philippines

To insure that courses on the Philippines, Filipino Language and Filipino Americans are maintained and fostered

What does PSG hope to Accomplish in the Near Future?

To raise $10,000 seed money toward the establishment of Philippine Studies Center at the University of Michigan

To continue to push for Philippine and Filipino American Courses, Lectures, and presentations that showcases the current research in this field.

Conduct a Survey on the Needs for Philippines Studies. 2002 Frank Murphy Museum Project 2002-2003 PSGSA Media Project: Students from UM/ PSGSA will

work with Filipino American High School students at Paaralang Pilipino at the Philippine American Cultural Center of Michigan to prepare a youth newsletter and Radio Project.

2002-2003 Make new ties with Filipino American Community groups, and Student Organizations working on similar lines.

The Frank Murphy Museum Pilot Project

Frank Murphy was the last Governor-General of the Philippines 1933-1934.

He later became the governor of Michigan He is a University of Michigan Alumni and an

important historical Figure. His former home in Port Huron has been

turned into a fledging community museum. The museum contains many uncataloged

artifacts from the Philippines. This project is funded through the Edward

Ginsberg Center for Community Service Fellowship

PSGSA is strengthening our relationships with Filipino American Community in Michigan through PACCM, Southfield MI in this project. The Filipino American Youth Media Workshop by using Media as a Civic Learning and Training Tool. This project is funded through a mini grant from the Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service

Filipina/o Diaspora Speaker Series: Bridging Filipino American Studies and Philippine Studies

This Speaker series will explore the inter-connections between Filipina/o Americans and Filipina/o issues in the diaspora. This series will also contribute to and broaden to the ongoing dialogs on diversity on campus and highlight the on-going projects focusing and building bridges between the campus communities and issues facing the local Filipino American communities. This presentation is a continuation of the work begun by the Philippine Study group, Philippine Studies Initiatives which 2001-2002 which culminated in an evening class on the Philippines that was funded through efforts of the Filipino American Community, International Institute and South and Southeast Asian Languages. The presentations in this speaker series grows out of the many discussions born out of that class that range from environmental pollution issues in the Philippines, Human Rights Abuses in the Philippines and the lessening of Civil rights in the United States, to local projects such as efforts to highlight the need for Philippine Studies on Campus and local community projects actively linking community resources with the talents and expertise of students on campus.
