PRESIDENT’S NOTE“There’s no law of economics that says ugliness pays.

I select beauty and set out to make it work economically” - Charles E Fraser developer of Hilton Head Island

Welcome to another year of WAHHI!

My little 5-year-old granddaughter, Allie, just “graduated” from preschool. At the ceremony, the teacher said that Allie came in every morning and announced, “I think it’s going to be a good day!” I’m taking her idea. I think it’s going to be a great year!

WAHHI has joined the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. That means that all of you are members and can take advantage of all that they have to offer as well.

We continue to focus on our relationship with the Community Foundation of the Low- country as we explore ways to give more to the community through our Youth Service Awards and grants to deserving non-profits. WAHHI needs your help!

I would like to give a big thank you to our Board and Council members. Each of our twenty women plays a key role in making this organization run. We also have 50+ Interest Group leaders and 40 Ambassadors working hard for all of you! Take a minute to thank them and consider getting involved.

WAHHI’S CHARITABLE FUNDCongratulations to the recipients of our Youth Service WAHHI’s Charitable Fund, administered by The Community Foundation of the Low country, contributes in special ways to our community. Last year, Family Promise, Special Olympics, and The Children’s Center are a few of the organizations which received program grants. There were many organizations, however, which applied for WAHHI grants which were not able to be satisfied because we did not have sufficient funding.

This year, we are focusing on our fundraising efforts to ensure that the WAHHI Charitable Fund has the funding capable of meeting community needs which align with our WAHHI mission. We are starting an interest group titled, “Fun Raising Funds,” to spearhead our efforts and strategize with some new, innovative fund raising efforts. Please visit the table at the September luncheon if you have an interest in helping out! Remember, you can always provide a tax deductible contribution to the WAHHI Charitable Fund. There are two ways to give:

• You may donate by a check payable to the “Community Foundation of the Low country” and including “WAHHI” on the MEMO line of the check and mail to the Community Foundation, PO Box 23019, Hilton Head Island, SC 29925; or

• You may donate via credit card. Please visit www.cf-lowcountry.org and select the “Donate Now” button. Select the WAHHI Charitable Fund from the list.

For more information or to volunteer to help our efforts, please contact Tamra Avrit at [email protected] or (571) 344.1624.

In keeping with Darah’s goals for the year to promote the culture and environment of the Low Country we will have a table showcasing The Heritage Library: A Center for Historic Research and Preservation and for Genealogical Research

WAHHI’S DIFFERENCE MAKERS YOUTH BOOK

DONATION DRIVE AT THE SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON!

Last year, the Difference Makers built and managed FREE Little Library boxes to support youth literacy outreach in our community. The FREE Little Libraries are located at the Boys and Girls Club and St. Luke’s for the Neighborhood Outreach Connection, with another FREE Little Library planned this fall for The Oaks apartments.

Please bring a YOUTH book with you to the September luncheon which can be donated to the FREE Little Library Program! YOUTH books for ages 3 to 15 are needed. While children books are always popular, there is a big need for early readers and books targeted at elementary and middle school age children.

For more information on how to help, email Barb Magee ([email protected]) or Connie Berding ([email protected]) with Difference Makers. THANK you in advance for your generosity to support youth literacy in our community!
