@HHHomecare herriothospice

Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of your supporter newsletter, where we once again celebrate the difference Herriot Hospice Homecare is making each and every day thanks to you, our remarkable community.

Hospice care is about everyone, and most importantly it is for everyone. Our vision is that anyone affected by terminal illness across Hambleton and Richmondshire can access high quality hospice care and support at home and in the local community.

We can only make this vision a reality by working together; this means people, groups and organisations coming together with clear purpose and passion to achieve something that is so much bigger than the sum of our parts.

Working collaboratively with those who share our ambitions is not a new approach for Herriot; indeed, as an independent local charity we have always been committed to making the very best use of our resources to make the greatest impact for local people.

But as we see demand for our services continue to increase rapidly against a backdrop of continued cuts to public services, it is now more than ever that we must explore the most innovative ways of working to reach more people who need our support.

This edition is therefore dedicated to the power of partnership – from our exciting plans to create purpose-built hospice facilities together with Thirsk-based League of Friends of the Lambert Hospital, to the return of Yorkshire’s Biggest Dog Walk, where Herriot will join forces with neighbouring North Yorkshire hospice, Saint Michael’s.

As an independent local charity, these valuable relationships enable us to share knowledge and expertise – with the needs of patients and their families always front and centre.

Partnerships pave the way for the future of hospice care, and as friends and supporters of Herriot Hospice Homecare, we hope you will continue to walk alongside us as we reach out to ensure more people in our community get the care they need, want and deserve.

Building the future of local services

The two local organisations will join forces to increase the breadth and scope of hospice care in the Thirsk area, building upon the services Herriot Hospice Homecare currently provides in patients’ own homes across Hambleton and Richmondshire.

In response to the needs of our community, the ambitious plans of the partnership include hospice beds, day therapy and a specialist neurological service.

Liz Waller, Secretary of The League of Friends of Lambert said, “Following the decision to close the Lambert Hospital, an area of significant concern has been around the services available in the area for those in the last stages of their life – with a 25 mile round trip for patients in Thirsk to attend many hospital appointments.”

In order to achieve our far-reaching ambitions to support the patients of today, whilst laying the foundations of care for the future, a new, purpose-built site tailored to the needs of patients will be developed in Thirsk.

This is just one of the ways Herriot is working in partnership with regional groups and organisations to make the most impact for local people, both in Thirsk and across Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Liz added: “Focusing on personalised care, choice and control for people at the end of their lives, Herriot Hospice Homecare is ideally placed to work alongside us.”

Herriot Hospice Homecare recently announced an important partnership, which sees the charity develop and improve end of life care for people in Thirsk and surrounding areas, thanks to the support of Thirsk-based League of Friends of the Lambert Hospital.

Pawfect Partnership

After the debut success of Yorkshire’s Biggest Dog Walk, we’re delighted to announce that as the event returns for 2018, Herriot Hospice Homecare will team up with Harrogate-based hospice, Saint Michael’s, to support even more families across the county.

Yorkshire’s Biggest Dog Walk 2017 saw hundreds of wagging tails take to a woodland route alongside celebrity vet Julian Norton, from the Channel 5 hit series ‘The Yorkshire Vet’.

We’re delighted that Julian and his four-legged friend, Emmy, will once again be taking the lead in our 2018 sponsored stroll. What’s more, Herriot has partnered with fellow North Yorkshire hospice care charity, Saint Michael’s, to make the event even bigger and better, supporting more families affected by terminal illness and bereavement.

Herriot Hospice Homecare’s catchment area begins where Saint Michael’s northern boundary ends, and many of the people using Herriot’s services have links in the district that Saint Michael’s serves.

Herriot has worked in partnership with Saint Michael’s for a number of years to share knowledge and experience across services. Now, this exciting event enables the two organisations to make more efficient use of resources and work together to make a greater impact through fundraising.

When taking part this July, walkers can choose whether they raise funds for their preferred charity, or step out in support of both hospices. See your calendar of events on page 14 for more information and to secure your place.

New Catterick store openThis Spring Herriot Hospice Homecare opened its latest store in Catterick Garrison, Richmondshire.

The shop, which is situated at 52 Richmond Road, in the former HM Supplies store (opposite the Princes Gate Retail Park), was officially opened by Lieutenant Colonel Joe Jordan, the Catterick Garrison Commander.

Among the goods on display on the first day were designer fashion brands such as Ted Baker, Radley, Guess, Viyella and Hackett London while homewares included Royal Doulton china and Poole Pottery.

Kathryn Harrison, Head of Retail at Herriot, said: “It costs the charity £1million each year to support local families, with services which

include end of life care, bereavement support, befriending, respite support and driving services.

“Our shops account for a third of this income so we are delighted to have been able to open our seventh shop in such a thriving community as Catterick Garrison.

“In keeping with the other Herriot shops, it has a boutique feel and we are confident it will appeal to all members of the public.

“The stock will be changed regularly, and we are always on the lookout for new, good quality donations.”

This Spring, Herriot Hospice Homecare marked 25 years of hospice care with an exclusive black-tie event at the Crathorne Hall Hotel, Yarm.

Guests at the Herriot Hospice Homecare Anniversary Dinner enjoyed a sparkling drinks reception followed by a four-course meal.

The evening featured six spectacular auction lots, including dinner for two with celebrity vet Julian Norton from ‘The Yorkshire Vet’ series; a two-night weekend break in the Yorkshire Dales; a signed football shirt donated by Manchester United Football Club; a tour and afternoon tea in the House of Lords, followed by tickets to a West End show; two hospitality tickets to a Premiership football match provided by

Heineken; and a week’s holiday in an apartment in Spain with £250 worth of travel vouchers donated by Simon Bailes.

Culminating in live music and dancing, the occasion raised more than £8,000.

Chief Executive of Herriot Hospice Homecare, Tony Collins, said: “I would like to thank everyone who supported this very special event. It was a particularly significant opportunity to reflect upon a quarter of a century of hospice care and all that we have achieved, together with our community.

Jervaulx Abbey in Lights Last year hundreds flocked to see the beautiful Jervaulx Abbey illuminated as part of debut event ‘Jervaulx Abbey in Lights’.

As the historic site, who described their local hospice as “an incredible charity that support so many of people”, prepare to once again host this exciting event, Herriot is delighted to have been chosen as the beneficiary of funds raised over the two weekends.

In 2017 more than 500 people gathered to see the charming ruined Cistercian monastery bathed in colourful light, while enjoying a unique evening of performances from local musicians along with atmospheric monastic chanting.

This year, the community is invited to join Jervaulx once again for this very special event, which takes place on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th October and Friday 26th and Saturday 27th

October. Gates open at 5pm, and once again guests will be treated to entertainment, and refreshments will be available to purchase.

Entry is £7.50 for adults and £5 for children (pay on the gate) and all proceeds help Herriot to offer more care and support to local families affected by terminal illness and bereavement.

Yorkshire Charity Clay DaysMonday 14th and Tuesday 15th May at Duncombe Park, HelmsleyChris Blundell and the Honourable Jake Duncombe jointly hosted the nineteenth Yorkshire Charity Clay Days at Duncombe Park on the 14th and 15th May 2018.

The event was a great success, with over 600 guests attending over the course of the two days.

Hugely successful silent and live auctions were held on both days with guests giving generously in aid of the nominated charities.

The charities this year were Marie Curie and Ryedale Special Families on the first day and The Prince’s Trust and Herriot Hospice Homecare on the second.

Herriot was exceptionally grateful to be a beneficiary of this prestigious event, and as we look forward to announcing the total raised in the forthcoming edition of your newsletter, we thank the organisers and all involved for so generously supporting local hospice care. We would also like to thank Lord Masham and Pickering Guns, who each donated exclusive lots to help raise funds.

Local lady Lisa Bainbridge is taking on a series of serious challenges for Herriot Hospice Homecare this year, after the charity cared for her mum, Bernice, in 2012. Lisa has already racked up hundreds of miles through a number of gruelling marathons and ultra-marathons. In March, the fearless fundraiser took on the Hardmoors 55, a 55 mile trail run where she braved snowy conditions and over 2,000 metres of ascent. Since beginning the challenge, Lisa has also participated in the Paris road marathon and a 64 mile trail run.

On May 26-27, Lisa laced up her running shoes once more to complete a 110 mile ultra-marathon, where she ran for more than 30 hours through the day and night, supported by her husband, on hand with food and supplies to sustain her through the race.

Lisa, from Potto, Hambleton, is raising funds for four charities as part of her challenge, including Herriot Hospice Homecare which has long been close to her heart:

“Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in February 2012, and it really came out of the blue.”

Lisa explained that, after receiving the news, Bernice, 67, deteriorated quickly, and Herriot’s services were invaluable in supporting the whole family:

“In the months that mum was near the end of her life, regular visits from

Herriot really helped as they were able to advise us on how we could borrow the equipment mum needed to stay at home, for example a special bed which could be put downstairs.

“It meant that she and my dad were supported, and were able to stay at home where mum wanted to be.”

Lisa has since been a passionate supporter of local hospice care, taking part in events such as the Herriot Lyke Wake Walk and raising thousands for the charity.

We say a huge thank you to Lisa for her support, and wish her the very best of luck in her challenges to come. You can keep up to date with Lisa’s progress and sponsor her efforts at:
