Articles and photos for the Long Runmay be submitted via e-mail toeditor@ pprrun.org or drop atdowntown YMCA. Hey Members—Iwant your running stories! I knowyou are out there and have stories, send them to me!

As I continue to say—you membersare AWESOME—keep the articlesand photos coming!

VolunteeringVolunteeringVolunteeringVolunteeringVolunteeringJust in case you don't take the time to read the minutes, at our April meet-ing, I commented to the board that I was going to try something new inrecruiting volunteers for the Feats of Fire for Kids. As Co-Chairperson forMemberships, I process the application forms and pulled about 40 new andrenewals that noted that they wanted to volunteer. I e-mailed them jointlyrequesting their help with the May 22 event. I got 1 response from that e-mailing.

A comment from one of the board members that initiated this test was thatthe volunteers are a clique and potentially new volunteers are not con-tacted. I already have 2 new volunteers who have contacted me to helpwith the Run for Hope in July. It's hard for the Race Director (or anyone, forthat matter) to take time to sit and make several hours of phone calls andask for help… and wait for return phone calls that never come. That's oneof the reasons a good core of volunteers that can always be depended on isso critical.

I hope you have noted our new Volunteer Opportunity column. If you havethe time and want to volunteer at one of our events, please take the timeand call or e-mail the Race Director and offer your help—it is so greatlyappreciated.

I would like to make a special thanks to several people who took on newtasks for the Feats of Fire for Kids. The individuals are already committedvolunteers, but this time I asked them to do a little more and they acceptedwithout any reservation, and performed as I expected… excellently.

AL GRIMME - accepted as our Course Director

KATIE WATERS - accepted as our T-Shirt Table Director

EMILY WATERS - accepted as Start Line Assistant (helping me check thebibs for "dots")

Another very special thank you to the TONSITS FAMILY - LAURA, REESEAND JUSTIN. Peter and Pete had a soccer game to make up… otherwise wewould have had the whole family as the water station. Laura told me, "It'sabout time that the Tonsits did some volunteering."

We are a race management club and without the volunteers there would beno club.

Let the rains come, but give us a little sunshine for our running events!

PPRR Board Meeting MinutesBoard Meeting MinutesBoard Meeting MinutesBoard Meeting MinutesBoard Meeting Minutes May 3, 2005May 3, 2005May 3, 2005May 3, 2005May 3, 2005YMCA: (Chris) Chris described the Y's 5k run in Falcon. It is asmall event that they hope will build in size. Starting time is10 a.m. at the Woodman Hills Rec. Center. Title: WoodmanHills 5k Run. Chris had ideas for a newsletter column. Oneidea was a q & a type of article.

Newsletter: (Diane) absent. Jim wanted it mentioned in thenewsletter that volunteers are outstanding.

Bulk Mail: (Jim) The last newsletter mailing was overweightbut flyer income offsets the extra postage. Al is shopping for anew electric stapler. The best price he has found so far was$298.

Equipment: (Larry/Gordon) Larry bought a bigger generatorto replace the one stolen from the storage unit. The price -$399. The new generator is on a platform with wheels and ahandle that folds down. Larry will use an etching tool to markit with PPRR name. Larry did not leave the generator at thestorage unit. Larry, Bill or Dave will keep the generator at oneof their houses.

Bill Gallegos is rotating another 737 out for repair. Forinsurance purposes, he is still compiling an equipment list andadding ADTM equipment.

Calendar: (Dave) Dave made corrections. He has beenproducing on colored paper.

Webmaster: (Dave) Janet Rose has requested that we publishthe training run attendance in the newsletter. Dave reportedprogress on the electronic newsletter research. The mainproblem will be the size of the files, photos. Membershipauthorization and validation will not be big issue.

Volunteer Coordinator (Cymmie) Volunteer appreciationnight was canceled. There were only three rsvps by noon onThursday. Phil kept the reserved room open. Don Johnson andBeezy Taylor entertained the group that came. Another ideawould be to include an appreciation event at the club's newGreat Race.

Race Coordinator: (Don) Update- Ft. Carson called to lodge acomplaint. At this time, Don did not have any additionalinformation about the matter. He attended a meeting inBoulder with other race coordinators from the Denver/Boulder are. Other areas wanted to know how we werehandling races on streets. Other than the Bolder Boulder thereis only one other race held on the road in Boulder. Donreported that it was an informative meeting. He receivedinformation on online race entry sites, other race insuranceand he commiserated about problems finding race venues, race shirts.

PPRR received a call from Skyway Elementary who wants toput on a 5k race and with a goal to profit $9,000. Pat advisedthem that they needed sponsorships.

Jim mentioned the possibility of a short, 1-mile race beforeVeteran's Day parade.

Attendance: (Robin) Lyn Hale, Robin Satterwhite PatLockhart, Larry Miller, Gil Kindt, Al Grimme, JimBeckenhaupt, Travis Waldrip, Cymmie Bailey, Don Johnson,Jack Anthony, Dave Sorenson, Phil FosterExcused: Gordon Barnett, Chris Tuttle, Diane Cahalan, JohnO'Neill, and Zane Meredith

Guest Business: - Dan Cleveland -Trails and Open Spaces .Dan has requested a liquor license for ADTM (AmericanDiscovery Trail Marathon). Last year the board was notinvolved with the liquor license and it did not go before theboard for approval. Pat wanted board approval this year. Danpresented the procedure that he will go through to get theliquor permit. The application form from the State Dept. ofRevenue calls for the "President, Secretary or politicalcandidate…" to show that the group is non-profit, in goodstanding. The applicant has to submit a plan for how thealcohol consumption will be contained. ADTM will only serveto runners and volunteers over 21. Last year they marked allbibs of runners under 21. Alcohol will be distributed andconsumed in a marked off area. Bristol Brewery will providefree beer. Ent is pleased with the event and happy to have thebeer. Pat would like PPRR named on a certificate of insurancefrom Bristol Brewery. Dan will request certificate, but sinceBristol Brewery gives ADTM the beer before the event and isnot present or involved in the distribution this might not bepossible.

Travis made a motion and Dave seconded, to approve Dan'srequest to get the liquor license. Larry Miller as vice presidentwill be listed on the permit request. The motion passed unani-mously.

Minutes: The minutes were approved as corrected.

Treasurer's Report: (Gil) Gil presented the current financialstatements. The full report was accepted and is on file. TheTotal cash in bank accounts is $13,555.21. Gil will close out theWells Fargo account this month and transfer remaining fundsto Key Bank. ADTM financial reports were included in thismonth's report. Gil is working on budget projections for PPRR.

Event Promotion: (Al) Al has been creating Active.cominformation pages for future races.

RRCA: (Jack) Jack will be attending RRCA convention nextweek. He will be watching the awards to see our competitionfor next year. RRCA news: Lisa Paige , our regional represen-tative is on the search committee for a new RRCA executivedirector. Jack also mentioned that his newsletter articles haveturned up additional historical leads.

Certifications/Measuring: (Travis) Travis is currently measur-ing for the Alex Hoag Race. He has completed the first coursethat finishes outside the stadium and will complete the secondon Thursday. The Diabetes run is tentatively using a course inBear Creek park. This course will not be certified, only mea-sured. Travis is working on the ADTM, particularly the 5k. Hehas scheduled to work on it in June and July. The PPRR's GreatRace could potentially use the same course out of ConfluencePark.

Letters to the Club/EditorLetters to the Club/EditorLetters to the Club/EditorLetters to the Club/EditorLetters to the Club/Editor

RUNNING USA COAST TO COAST RACE ANDRELAY CLARIFICATIONDear Running USA member:

A few weeks ago, we sent out a concept document describingthe proposed Running USA Coast to Coast RACE andRELAY. We have received favorable responses from many ofyou indicating strong interest in either helping out with orsponsoring the project. To all of you, we thank you very muchand to those who haven’t responded, we look forward to yourfeedback, too.

We would like to make several points of clarification. Theproject is a Running USA project and the plan is thatproceeds will benefit the fight against childhood obesity byproviding grants to members who participate and have aprogram which encourages youth or family fitness. DMSE,with two transcontinental runs under their belts, will provideservices and expertise in the management of the event.Since the DMSE Foundation was established 1 ½ years agoto also benefit the youth fitness cause, the initial plan was tofunnel donations through that entity. But this has given somepeople the impression that proceeds will benefit the DMSEmanagement company which was never the intention. ALLdonations and net proceeds will be distributed to deservingprograms determined by a committee of the Running USABoard of Directors.

Finally, some folks have asked how they can get involved ifthe proposed course does not pass through their area.Member entities will be able to get involved in various waysincluding recruiting participants for the RELAY and perhapscombining with others to sponsor a team in the RACE. Onepossibility may be to recruit an entire team from a state orcity that is not on the route and challenge another state orcity to do the same. The Coast to Coast RACE may alsoprovide fundraising avenues such as donations associatedwith a particular runner. We will provide a staff person whocan assist you with your fundraising or publicity ideas. Also, keep in mind that the RELAY and RACE will probably havea different course every year and we will also consider havingstages of the RELAY feed into the overall course from citiesto the north and south of it.

The plans for the RELAY and RACE will be presented atthis week’s Running USA Board meeting in Chicago forinput and approval. We will keep you posted on any develop-ments.

Meanwhile, please continue to send along your ideas andsuggestions.

Regards,

Basil Honikman Dave McGillivrayExecutive Director DMSE, Inc.Running USA [email protected]

From William in Plano TXThe Plano Pacers finally received hot weather. We are on asummer schedule now, with 5K races for all and .673 mileraces (the path around the park lake) for twelve and underrunners. Memorial Day weekend began a week with a racesomewhere in the Dallas area every day, as announced byequipment custodian (and Pikes Peak competitor) KenAshby. June will feature the Millet Mile, a slight downhillrun, with the prevailing wind pushing the runners. Lots ofrunners set PR's here.

My own age group in the 5k included Hunter Hammitt, aretired Baptist missionary to the Orient and returningmember, and Bill Johnson, first president of the Pacerstwenty-five years ago. We all won trophies, which put me inheady company. Hunter was able to speak with my wife,Chun, in Korean, her native language. Chun's brother is alsoa Baptist missionary.

Chun also accompanied me to the Prediction Run in earlyMay. She was immediately drafted as a timekeeper, andenthusiastically invited back when she did well at the job.Part of this was staying awake until I finished.

I offer a bit of trivia for you. In the May copy of the Long Run,you had a picture of the Kinner family, taken in the early1940's. Most of your members are too young to rememberWorld War II, but I am not. Mrs. Kinner is wearing bobbysox. She would have worn nylons, but those were virtuallyunobtainable during the war. Silk stockings were expensive, and silk was controlled by the enemy, Japan. The less saidabout rayon stockings, the better. Women used leg makeup, wore sox, or just did without. The young man on leave whocould somehow get nylons was in great demand. Check someof the TV movies of the period. Mrs. Kinner would certainlyhave preferred to be photographed in stockings if she hadany.

Rregards,

Road Race Management DirectoryHello All!A quick note here to let you know that I have a copy of theRoad Race Managment Directory which lists the contacts forabout every product and service known to appeal to runners, race directors, race production, you name it. Phil Stewart(owner/editor of Road Race Management newsletter) gives acopy to each State Rep. So if you or your race directors needa contact name, please let me know. It’s simple for me to lookup in this book. BTW, this book sells for $135 and is availableonly as hard copy (not online).

Freedom 10K Road RaceTodd J AllisonCPT, QMSupport Squadron, 3d ACRDSN (302) 539-5505

Pikes Peak Road Runners,I would like to start out by introducing myself. I am ToddAllison, and I am an officer assigned to the 3d ArmoredCavalry Regiment stationed at Fort Carson. I am currentlydeployed to Iraq for the second time with the 3d ACR.Other than spending time with my beautiful wife between mydeployments I enjoyed nothing more than running in theraces that the Colorado Springs community had to offer. Some of the races that I enjoyed were:

• Take5 in the Garden of God• Several 10Ks on Fort Carson, CO• Summer Trail Roundup• Pikes Peak Ascent• ADT Half Marathon• Race for the Cure• Mayor's Cup 10K

Several of my fellow officers and soldiers of the 3d ACRshare my enthusiasm for running and in order to break themonotony of day-to-day in Iraq we organize races. The firstmajor race that we are hosting is the Freedom 10K RoadRace on the 4th of July. Without sounding needy I would liketo solicit help from all those companies and clubs thatorganize races. The Colorado Springs community has goneout of their way to make soldiers like me feel proud so Idonot want to over step their gratitude. We have ordered T-shirts and are raising monies already with private sponsors. There are a great deal of little things that go into running arace that we are in need of. For instance, pins, numbers, stopwatches, plastic bags, american flags, race bannersetc. Weplan on running several races and we are going to plan themout sooner than this one.

Since we are from the Colorado Springs Area I would like tosee if any organizations or clubs would like to sponsor us. Onmy first deployment to Afghanistan before I was in the 3dACR a 5K race club out of Philadelphia, PA sponsored agroup of soldiers who held a 5K in honor of the race inPhiladelphia. I think the race was to commemorate thepotatoe famine in Ireland or something, but when we ran therace in Afghanistan we took digital pictures and video and

sent it back to Philly where they showed the photos andvideo so the runners in the states could see thesoldiers beforethey raced. I think it would be great if each of our races wassponsored by a local Colorado Springs Race. I understandthat your organization is unofficially or officially "plugged in"to the race schedule and POCs for all races. I will under-stand if you cannot support us or do not want to impose onthe business relationships you have built in Colorado Springs. However, if you know of anyone that would be interested inworking with us and sharing in our deployed exeperience Ithink it would be great. I feel a sense of sorrow with all theraces that I am going to miss this season.

I look forward to talking to anyone that is willing to lend ahand no matter how small. Until next year, I will be runningin the deserts of Iraq longing for the mountains of Colorado.

I have attached a sponsor form for the FREEDOM 10K. Therace coordinator is First Lieutenant Carla Graves and herPOC information is on the form. Again I appreciate yourhelpor advice on this matter.

Very Respectfully,Todd

June 2005

Dear Sir or Madam:

I would like to invite you to help sponsor the FREEDOM 10K RoadRace. The race will be held Monday, July 4, 2005 in Tall Afar, Iraq. This race will be the first major road race hosted at Camp Sykes. Itwill be an excellent opportunity for the Soldiers of the ThirdArmored Cavalry Regiment come together as a unit and celebratethe 4th of July; a holiday which recognizes our independence andfreedom as a nation.

I am assigned to Support Squadron, Third Armored CavalryRegiment. I am currently on my second deployment to Iraq with this unit. Last deployment, road races were a welcomed breakfrom the constant operations and an excellent boost to morale.

We are currently in the process of organizing and planning the 10K road race. We are also trying to organize a post-racecelebration with food and music. One of our goals for this road race is to be able to present each runner with a free T-Shirt tocommemorate the race, as well as recognize the fastest runners in each age group with an award. We are expecting approxi-mately 600 soldiers to participate in the race and need to raise about $3,000.

We would greatly appreciate your financial support or donations in kind to help make this event a success. Please email theform below to [email protected] as soon as possible. Your donations should be mailed to the address below by June 10, 2005

While there have been times in our nation's history, whereselect groups of people born on American soil have beendeprived of some of these rights, in the year 2005, in the stateof Colorado, in the United States of America, such hin-drances on personal freedoms are difficult to imagine.

Most of our politicians are currently staking their claims onsuch lofty issues as the fate of Social Security, state budgetdeficits, and the importation of prescription drugs fromCanada. And certainly, while these issues are far fromirrelevant to the vast number of American citizens who willbe affected by the outcomes of each debate, imagine beingstripped of your innate ability to run.

Most of the matters previously described are economic inscope. After all, despite our nation's affluence, our resourcesare still limited. Lobbyists, who want to remain employed, arefighting for these resources. Politicians, who want to remainin office, are fighting for these resources. Corporations, hoping to protect profit margins, are fighting for theseresources. And individual citizens, who want to keep asmuch of their income as possible, are fighting for theseresources.

Running, as an act, is not an issue of economic significance. One's ability to run, or inability for that matter, is an infi-nitely more grave and profound issue. That is because it is anissue of natural rights, not an issue of economic entitlement. What can be more natural than running?

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These words, formany of us, have become almost cliché. Perhaps it is becauseour memories are noticeably absent of this type of naturaldeprivation. As a result, we concern ourselves with issuesthat, albeit important to us, perhaps borderline on themundane when compared to the problems of others.

Nonetheless, this morning, I went for a long run. The act ofputting onefoot in frontof the otherwas asnatural asthe acts ofinhalationand exhala-tion.

Somewherebetween thebeginningand the endof my run, mymind beganto wander. Ithoughtabout SocialSecurity.

Freedom to RunMichael Shafai

As we hustle and bustle our way through our lives, sometimesit's easy to forget how good we've got it.

Yes, we complain about our jobs. We complain about ourspouses. We complain about our kids. We fret about thetraffic on the interstate, the drugs in our schools, and the dogcrap someone neglected to remove from the middle of thetrail. Gas prices are soaring, the dollar is plunging against theeuro, and the utility department only permits us to water ourlawns twice a week.

These are the things I hear. Day after day, hour after hour-it's almost impossible to escape this bombardment of negativ-ity and Chicken Little laments—"the sky is falling!!!" But is itreally so bad?

In her bestselling memoir, Reading Lolita in Tehran, AzarNafisi portrays startling visions of human repression enduredunder the auspices of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In thesame book however, she provides a contrast to these descrip-tions by masterfully combining them with encouraging imagesof liberation achieved through the cathartic power ofliterature.

Nafisi vividly chronicles the transformation of her society, one where just twenty-five years ago, women could wearmakeup, jewelry, and fashionable clothing, to today, whereeven a single strand of hair escaping through her robes andscarves can bring on the unwelcome wrath of a moralitysquad, and the extreme punishment that accompanies such atransgression.

While most of us are outraged when we are periodicallyalerted to the torturing, executions, and imprisonments thatoften occur under totalitarian regimes, we are painfullyunaware, or we simply choose to ignore, how the citizens ofsuch regimes are summarily deprived of even the simplestpleasures.

While we fret about the long line at Starbucks, others aredenied the simple satisfaction of eating chocolate, or holdinghands with their lover as they walk down the street, orwearing colored socks, or reading The Great Gatsby, orputting on a pair of shorts and going for a run on warm springday.

While certainly, suffering an execution at the hands of thestate for speaking one's mind, would unanimously be con-strued as cruel and unusual punishment in the eyes of anyAmerican judiciary, in what way would we label the "inabilityto eat an M&M", or the "inability to hold hands with my wifein public", or the "inability to wear red socks", or the "inabil-ity to read a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald", or the "inability torun up Barr Trail "? I doubt most of us have ever thoughtabout it.

contined from page 9I thought about prescription drugs. I thought about how thecounty just reassessed my property, presumably because theyneed more money to cover a deficit, now or in the future. Ialso thought about chocolate. I thought about holding handswith my wife after we left the restaurant last weekend. And Ithought about reading the novel I recently purchased…theone sitting unopened on my nightstand.

Then, after all that running and thinking, and thinking andrunning, I came to one single conclusion. I concluded that no,I really don't have it so bad…Until I stepped in a pile of dogcrap that someone neglected to pick up from the middle ofthe trail.

The Kinner pioneers came to Colorado in 1850 and havehomesteaded and ranched the front range from here toCastle Rock. The Kinner sisters still live in Colorado. Dixielives in Denver and Pat and Janet live here in ColoradoSprings. Through their fabulous memories and renewed spiritof exploration into their history, these gals have been atremendous help to me in my history research and siteexploration.

As illustrated in the May's Long Run newsletter article, I'vebeen entertained by stories reflecting on life as a child on theKinner ranch in the 1940s. This article will share a few storiesof adventure, danger, humor and sadness and perhaps makethis section of the New Santa Fe Regional Trail a specialpathway through the lives of John, Emma, Dixie, Pat andJanet Kinner.

In February 1944 John Kinner III purchased a 500-acre ranchwith a two-story home on it that was greatly in need of repair. This home was built in the late 1800s by then Edgerton'sJustice of the Peace E. G. Moon. The Kinner girls wouldsometimes refer to it as the "Moon" house. The Kinners liveda short while in West Husted while the "Moon" home wasfixed up.

John was a teacher and coach in Monument at Big Red, theschool building located west of the I-25/Monument inter-change. He was a well respected coach and teacher andoften spoke at teacher forums statewide. John and Emmaquickly organized quite a ranching operation. They leased anadditional 200 acres on what is now the AFA airfield. Theyran cattle, raised pigs and chickens and grew corn and beansas crops. John would milk 30 cows in the morning and sell themilk to Meadow Gold Creamery in Colorado Springs. Run-ning a ranch and teaching in Monument made for long daysfor John Kinner, but he was blessed with a bride and threegirls whose work ethic and dedication matched his. Let'slearn more about life on the Kinner ranch.

The Rio Grande railroad formed the western boundary of theKinner ranch and as the coal trainswould rumble by, coal would bounceout and land along the tracks. Thiswas a great source of fuel for cookingand heating. The family would headout to the tracks and collect thedonations. Once a train derailed infront of the Kinner's home. This notonly provided some extra coal, butsome of the cars were full of live sheepand others were transporting potatoes. The Kinners helped railroad workersround up the sheep and get them backin the cars. The coal and potatoesremained for the Kinner family use.Along the tracks was the Kinner pigpen. Emma canned apples and on oneoccasion, mixed the peelings with therye in the slop barrel.

We're about 4 miles into our northbound run from theWoodmen trailhead. We've reached a mile north of thebridge that crosses over West Monument Creek. From here, the trail has some twisty and hilly sections and soon it willturn east and then in a mile or so the trail joins the rail bed ofthe Santa Fe Railroad and heads north to Palmer Lake.

This is Kinner Country! In this area in 1944-46 time frameJohn and Emma Kinner lived in a two story late 1800's vintagehome with their three children Dixie, Pat and Janet.

The garbage fermented and turned alcoholic. The pigs got abit tipsy as they fed upon this apple beer elixir. After Dixiefed the pigs that morning and watched the results, she washorrified to think that she had done something awful to thepigs. What a sight to behold . . . drunken pigs!

The chicken coop was north of the house and each spring theKinners would purchase and raise 500 chicks and grow themfor the family meat and for sale. After one particularly heavyrain, they found the chicks, cold and wet, floating on top ofthe water. This prompted the family to bring all the chicksinto the house to be dried and warmed around the kitchencook stove. The chicks were soon peeping again.

Being the oldest, Dixie was often out with dad doing chores.Janet was a toddler during these times and observed Dixieand Pat doing chores like bringing in the cows in the evening. One evening thecows wanderedover near whereI-25 is todaywhich was Hwy87 and the eastboundary of theranch. Afterrounding up theherd, a Santa Fetrain came byand tooted itswhistle, thusscattering thecows. Dixie andPat returnedhome very upsetand cowless. Dadhad to mountMolly, the familyhorse, and gofetch the Kinnerherd.

As introduced earlier, the home had no electricity orplumbing. That was to come to this area after World WarII. The home was heated with an iron cook stove in thekitchen and a pot belly stove that stood in the living room. Ifnot enough coal was gathered from along the tracks, theywould purchase coal from the Pikeview Coal Mine which waslocated where the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame is located today. The upstairs was heated by the chimney that went up fromthe pot belly stove. Plumbing consisted of pumping andcarrying water from the well. Facilities included an outsideone seater and a chamber pot under the bed. Lights were akerosene lamp and candles. The Kinners went to bed withthe chickens and arose with them, thus lights were not a bigdeal to them.

Washing was done by scrub board in a tub on the kitchenfloor. The tub also served as the bathtub and many times ashivering Kinner child stood in front of the kitchen cookstove drying after a cold bath. Pumping water was not only

accomplished for household purposes, but also for filling thecold vat where milk cans were kept cool and for watering thegarden.

The Kinner girls’ memories of contact with the outside worldwere special times sitting with dad in the car listening to theradio, especially sports events, and taking trips to town andthe county sale barn. The Kinner girls all agree and empha-size that life at their home was one of adventure, and theywere not the least bit deprived. It was the way country lifewas back then. Every cow, cat, dog, and chicken werenamed by the children and were family pets. Weatherpermitting, the girls were in Monument Creek, often timesbathing in their birthday suits, or catching fish with a worm ona safety pin.

Do you recall Mary and Marian Young's heap biscuits servedto the Indians?Well, EmmaKinner had herversion of heapbiscuits. She wasa homemakerextraordinaire! She baked freshbread and madehomemade butterand chokecherryjam. There werean abundance ofchokecherries, gooseberries, andwild plums alongthe creek. Attimes a personwandering alongthe tracks wouldcatch a whiff ofEmma's freshlybaked bread, and

perhaps like the Indians with the Young's, would come to thedoor for a piece to munch on. Items from the garden andmeat from butchering were canned since there was norefrigeration. Killing and plucking a chicken for the eveningmeal was normal. Emma's Singer treadle sewing machine wasused to make clothes for the rag dolls she'd make for her girls, and eventually she'd teach them to sew on this machine thatis still in the family today. She'd even make the girls' clothingincluding underwear made from printed flour sacks.

There were plenty of adventures in and around the Kinnerhouse. A trip to the outhouse could mean running into thegiant Rhode Island Red Rooster. Named after a well-knownfighter of the day, Joe Lewis would get all riled up and standtall and spread his wings to protect his territory as the girlswould seek to make their way to the potty! They would carrya broom or long stick to shoo Joe away as he often tried tocircle around back and knock the girls down. Once he evensent Emma (mom) to her knees with an apron full of eggs she

continued from page 11had just gathered. Quite a mean fellow Joe the rooster was.One Sunday mother saw fit for him to end up as dinner! Notvery tender eating.

The old house had honey bees in the walls and John made ahole in the wall to harvest the honey. That was indeed ayummy good deal for the Kinners. However, Pat woulddisagree. The hole in the wall was in her bedroom and she feltthe bees liked chasing her the most!

Fetching canned goods from the cellar by an outside dugouttype entrance was a daily chore that could mean meeting arattlesnake on the stairs. With cows all around the ranch, itwas not unusual for a cow to peer into a window. Janet'stoddler memory of monsters looking into the window wasmost likely Miss Moo or another of the family cows checkingup on her.

As you can see, the life of a Kinner child was tough by today'smodern accommodations. But this close-knit family workedhard and enjoyed the wilds of northern Colorado Springs. This article captures but a snap shot of the adventures, thehard work, and joy of being a Kinner.

John III and his wife Emma were fabulous parents andshowcased love and a work ethic that rubbed off on theirgirls. In 1946 John III and his dad John II, Grandpa to the girls, cut the lumber and started to build a new house east of the

Moon home very close to where our running trail intersectsthe Santa Fe railroad bed. Things were looking good forteacher John as he was going to start teaching science andmath at North Junior High in Colorado Springs that fall.

However, the father-son duo would not get to complete thejob together. It seems a bit of the flu was going around theKinners and John could not shake its effects and the tight-ness in his chest.

Dixie remembers clearly as she was 13 years old then andrecalls doing the morning chores and peering at the morningstar Venus as she closed the barn doors knowing somethingwas very wrong with her dad. Her mom would have her walknorth along the tracks to Husted to get her Aunt Alice tocome and help get daddy to the hospital. That would be thelast time Dixie, Pat, and Janet would see their dad. Johnwould succumb to polio 6 weeks later. During his hospitaliza-tion, the girls relocated to their grandparent's home in EastHusted and remember sadly the night all three were joined intheir bed by their mom and learned that their dad would notbe coming home.

In the area we now run, and with special AFA SecurityForces permission to leave the trail, I have explored theKinner's ranch area and watched ladies who are getting on inyears transform back to being little girls romping around theirranch. Emma owned the ranch until it was purchased in1955 by the State of Colorado and given to the US Govern

Pat and Janet "Kinner" today….fellow explorers!

ment for the AF Academy. Though wiped away by theconstruction of the AF Academy in the late 1950s, there arehints and evidence of a home and family that leap forth when

a story is told by a Kinner gal. I not only gain insight into theKinner's time on their ranch, I also gain fabulous insight as farback as the mid-1800s when the Kinner girls' great grandpar-ents came to Colorado.

There is far more I can share, but I must close this KinnerCountry essay. I do hope as you enjoy this section of the NewSanta Fe Regional trail that you listen closely for the long-agolaughter and joy of Dixie, Pat and Janet as they round uptheir cows or collect coal along the tracks, and perhaps youmay hear an older voice shout out a hearty "you're lookinggood, runner" as I may be yet again exploring Kinner Countrywith Dixie, Pat and Janet.. If you smell fresh bread as youcharge up a hill, that's Emma baking again. I want to dedi-cate this article to Dixie, Pat and Janet…my fellowexplorers…and also especially to John III and Emma, superdad and super mom. I am sure their daughters would agreewith that parental characterization! Next time we'll learnabout Husted and maybe even drop in Husted's Kinner Storeand Service Station for a cold pop!

Ent Federal Credit Union hasbeen an outstanding contribu-tor to our event! This added agreat PR person, Curtis Fox,to our team. This year theyare working hard with us andby the time you read this Iexpect we will have a two year contract with EFCU providingus with a strong financial base and elevating us to a new levelin community involvement.

EFCU is working with us to create a foundation to combatobesity local children. This is a very big problem that isgetting worse around the country. The Pikes Peak RoadRunners have been very active for years in creating a grassroots program to emphasize children's running with our FallSeries, Feats of Fire, and the children's runs at many of ourraces. By running the 5K you will be helping us establish afoundation to elevate community awareness of the problemsand how to combat them. More next month!

continued from page 13Let me clarify why RunnersRoost is no longer a sponsorfor the ADTM. The Roostcould no longer afford tosupport us at the level theydid in the past (blank shirtsplus a monetary donation). They made a new offer thatdid not include shirts and was at a reduced monetarycontribution. To avoid a possible conflict of interest inseeking another shirt provider/contributor at the PresentingSponsor level, I declined their offer.

Many thanks to the Triple Crown for referring runners fromtheir site to ADTM as a alternate marathon for those unableto register for the PPM!

Our entry brochure is in this newsletter. Entries are runningabout the same as last year. I expect the 5k runners will bewaiting for the last couple of weeks to register. You cannotbeat the price for a great race on a flat and fast new course!Do not forget the 100% cotton shirt with a super logo.

EON studios will again be providing the volunteer shirts thisyear. They will be very nice shirts in a dry release material. Thanks to Michael at EON!

The Ent Community Fitness 5K Challenge proceeds will go toa fund to combat obesity in local children. There is a pledgeform in the entry brochure you can use to help raise funds forthe fund. IF YOU RAISE $50 OR MORE IN PLEDGES YOUWILL GET A FREE ENTRY IN THE 5K! LOTS OF NEATPRIZES WILL GO TO TOP FUND RAISERS! There is alimit to 500 runners in the 5K, so you may want to getentered early!

RRCA Regional Director Lisa Page has designated ourmarathon and half marathon as the RRCA Colorado TrailChampionships and the events are part of the Trail RunnerMagazine Trophy Series. If we can perform well, Lisa willconsider giving us the RRCA Western Regional Champion-ships next year! RRCA does not yet have a National Cham-pionship for Trail Marathons or Half-Marathons. I haverequested they add these races to their agenda for nextyear….with our races, of course, at the top of their list!Board member and cool runner Jack Anthony was ourrepresentative at the RRCA National Convention lastmonth. He tells us that ADTM was a definite topic ofdiscussion there! Maybe….

We will have race day registration for all races, but at aslightly elevated fee, so I advise to register early! It also takesthe hassle for runners and volunteers of registering on raceday. Note the cutoff times for registration on race day!

We will be adding more massage tables and port-a-johns onthe course this year.

The city parking garage at Sahwatch Street and ColoradoAvenue will be available to us this year. It is very close toConfluence Park. Thanks to the city for their help.

The park has a really great playground for the kids. Kids willhave one or two races (TBD) after the runners have finishedthe 5K.

Plan to add the prerace pasta feed to your agenda. Check towebsite or the entry form for the information. We have greatfood, quality companionship, a world class speaker TBD,packet pickup and registration!

Pat Lockhart5th Annual Feats of Fire for Kids is now history. Our participation count was down due to unknown reasons.20,000 entry forms were delivered to all of the schools 3 weeks before the event. I know there were kids sportingevents that were rescheduled to Sunday because of the rainy/snowy previous weeks, but don't know if that's theanswer. A lot of new events for the kids to participate in were incorporated this year. Special Thank Yous to OfficeTod Hill (CSPD), Investigator Greg Segura and Lt. Brian Keys (CSFD), Kelli Romp (Safe Kids Coalition), and RobRolley (YMCA)… and of course the Pikes Peak Road Runners. Our photographer has made another slide show thatis on our website. The proverbial a picture = 1000 words is so true.

Over 200 volunteer hours from PPRR went into this event. Thanks to: Andrew Abdella, Sheri Abdella, TonyAbdella, Dave Balzer, Jan Balzer, Jim Beckenhaupt, Stephanie Courson-Olsson, Tom Dewane, Angie Earle, BillGallegos, Ron Garcia, Al Grimme, Brenda Grimme, Lyn Hale, Bobby Hammett, Susan Hoxie, Jan Huie, MelissaJohnson, Gil Kindt, Jennifer McGee, Larry Miller, Linda O'Conner, John Powell, Kaci Rex, Kathy Rex, Kobi Rex,Kyle Rex, Steve Rex, Janet Rose, Craig Schafer, Micky Simpson, Dave Sorenson, Justin Tonsits, Laura Tonsits, ReeseTonsits, Emily Waters, Katie Waters, Matt Waters, Melissa Waters, Zach Waters, and Civitan members.

Feats of Fire for Kids is incorporated as a Colorado non-profit corporation. This event is provided for all kidsthrough donations from a benefit auction held at the Winter Series dinner and from sponsorships from our com-munity.

The laughter of kids is so contagious… no mater what they are doing.

American with Disabilities ActAmerican with Disabilities ActAmerican with Disabilities ActAmerican with Disabilities ActAmerican with Disabilities ActPat LockhartSomething that should never be forgotten is to take intoconsideration at all of our events the wide diversity ofpeople in attendance. Specifically, those that arewheelchair bound. I encountered one such incidentrecently. I failed to provide wheelchair accessible portajohns. I apologized profusely to the individual, but atthat point in time - during the event - my hands weretied.

But, then I got to thinking … possibly the City Parks,Recreation and Cultural Services should have providedsuch equipment within their parks or that at least itshould be part of the Special Events Application/Permit. Below is the response that I received from Mr.Kurt Schroeder.

******

Pat, Thanks for keeping us updated on this. In referenceto our "policy" on providing handicap porta-johns,we've learned the "hard way" just as you have. Atspecial events that we are co-sponsors of (4th of July,Balloon Classic, etc.) as a mater of course we will ordera mix of standard and accessible porta-johns. Any newrestrooms we build will be accessible and we have beenupdating older restrooms (if possible -some we mustjust tear down and start over fresh) to be accessible -

we've just completed modifications to the ThorndalePark and Boulder Park restrooms. We have also beeninstalling porta-john enclosures at new neighborhoodparks and are installing three or four a year at existingparks. All of the enclosures can accommodate anaccessible unit.

I think you handled Mr. _______ concerns quite well. His frustration is real and justified but it sounds like heis satisfied that he has been heard and will return tohelp again. I will make sure that Laura suggests topeople that are using our parks for special events toinclude a number of accessible porta-johns in their mix. After early mistakes, knowing to do so is now secondnature to us. Looks like we need to keep in mind thatothers will not have the same experience as us andtherefore not know to do so.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help youwith.
