MESSENGER“These three remain.”

Does that phrase sound familiar to you? It’s found in one of the most well-known and oft quoted chapters in the Bible—1 Cor-inthians 13. And for good reason. There’s no way to read 1 Cor-inthians 13 without an awareness that these are truly (Spirit) INSPIRED words…

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails (verses 4-8).

The Apostle Paul comes to the end of this great chapter and provides us with a summary statement. “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.” This isn’t just a summary of the chapter—or even the entire book of 1 Corinthians. This is a summary of LIFE. This is a summary of our very existence on this earth.

... there are three things that I believe are vital

and essential to our life as a fol-lower of Christ.

After our entire lives are lived—these three remain.

After nations rise and fall, and kingdoms come and go—these three remain.

After all things come to an end and the very elements are no more—these three remain.

Faith, hope and love will never end…they will never fade away. “But the greatest of these is love” (v. 13).

There’s a good chance you’ve seen this verse before many times. But even if you’ve only seen it once—I’m sure you remember it. I don’t think there’s any way to forget it. It’s right up there with In the beginning God created; or For God so loved the world. These are Truths that, after hearing them, you never forget them.

I also want to share with you three things. And no—I obviously don’t put them on par in any way with these three that we see here in 1 Corinthians 13. Nonetheless, there are three things that I believe are vital and essential to our life as a follower of Christ. Things we would do well to remember.

1.We need God. This might sound too simple to state—but it isn’t. The fact is, it can be so easy to live much of our lives with no thought of involving God. We worry. We stress out. We go through the motions. We go on auto-pilot. We say things without thinking first. We forget to pray.

Prayer, at its essence, is connecting with God at that given moment. It’s acknowledging God’s presence and His power and asking Him to be at work. I met yesterday with a man who shared that several years ago, he slipped on the ice following church one Sunday and basically shattered his elbow. He was laying there in excruciating pain. But the sermon that morning was on prayer—which prompted him to pray, (stating that he probably wouldn’t have done this had it not been for the sermon). He asked God to touch him and calm him. He invited God into the moment and acknowledged his need for God. Something miraculous and supernatural

happened. He sensed God warming him from head to toe with a complete sense of peace and God’s presence that overwhelmed him. And from that day on, this man has lived with a completely new awareness of God’s presence in his life. We truly do need God—and He is always right there waiting for us to acknowledge His presence and ask for His provision.

2. We need one another. God has designed us to live in relationship with other people. The only thing that God declared was NOT GOOD in the Garden of Eden was the fact that Adam was alone (Gen. 2:18). But here’s the deal—even when we acknowledge our need for others, we often fail to do anything about it. Far too many of us live with a constant sense of loneliness. Some of the fault can lie with others who fail to reach out to us. But at the end of the day—we are responsible for our own actions. We are the ones who must take the initiative to reach out and make a connection. And by connection, I’m talking about God-honoring, vulnerable, honest, iron-sharpening-iron relationships. Visit a Sunday school class this Sunday. Grab a Life Transformation Group brochure in one of our lobbies. Reach out—we need one another.

3. We need to serve. Life, when it’s all said and done, is not about us. We have to get that truth embedded deep into our hearts and minds. God created us to love Him and to love others. And He wouldn’t have commanded us to do this if He didn’t wire us and equip us to do it. A life lived for self is a life poorly spent.

The Apostle Paul described the building material that we all have the choice to use when building our lives—gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw (1 Corinthians 3:12). It’s a great metaphor to describe the seemingly insignificant choices we make every day. When we choose to gratify our own desires and live for ourselves, we’re choosing to build with wood, hay and straw. They’re poor choices, with absolutely no eternal significance. However, acts of mercy and kindness, words that build

Board of Administration Meeting Highlights

The Board of Administration met on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, in the Admin-istrative Office Conference Room. Chairman Steve Shadle called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Andrea Adams opened the meeting with devotions and prayer. Following are highlights from this meeting:

Senior Pastor’s Report:Pastor Jody Bowser announced that he

attended his first meeting as a trustee of Hun-tington University. He expressed excitement about the new Digital Media Arts Center that will afford students the opportunity to work with businesses in the area of filming. He noted that Bishop Fetters asked he and Denny Miller to speak at the upcoming United Brethren Annual Conference. Pastor Jody spoke of his thoughts on the progress for the year on Trans-formation. He is pleased by the responses. He shared the quote by D. L. Moody, “The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation.” Pastor Jody expressed that so many people do not have anyone that they feel connected with. He passed out pamphlets on Life Transformation Groups that will be made available soon. The pamphlet describes the opportunity for people to form Life Trans-formation Groups to bring them together, be connected and hold each other accountable. This will be implemented within the church and he encouraged all to create a small group.

up and don’t tear down, these are diamonds and gold. There’s truly no greater joy in life than in serving others. Loving God and serving others is, as the French say, our Raison D’Etre—our reason for being. Faith, hope and love remain. And the greatest of these is love!

Elders’ Report: Mike Wentz expressed gratitude for the

opportunity to be part of baptism and part-nership classes. He shared that the elders are encouraged by their participation in this process. Mike announced that Rich Tardosky will be stepping away from his position on the elders. He revealed that Adam Keath will become the vice chairman for the elders.

Co-mission Reports: • Adult Ministries – Andrea Adams spoke on

the discussion during the recent meeting of the Adult Ministry Co-mission. The Tim Tebow Night to Shine will be held on Friday, February 10 in the Baker Center. The co-mission spent the majority of their time discussing how they can be more outwardly focused as a co-mis-sion and more welcoming to those who visit. They will continue this discussion at their next meeting.

• Children and Youth – Sue Washabaugh com-municated the following details from the recent meeting of the Children and Youth Co-mission. The Youth Department expressed excitement for the success of the Winter Slam. It went smoothly and was attended by 127 students and leaders. The group would like to thank the many volunteers that made this possible. The co-mission asked for prayer for the upcoming classes for the middle school students on sexual purity. The co-mission asked for prayer for the high school basketball program and direction on how best to reach the players. Jim Byers

shared that the coaches are discussing how they can help the players get connected to folks in the church. Sue noted that the After School Program is raising money for Cure Interna-tional. The children are excited to raise money to bless someone else.

• Finance – In Ray Cullen’s absence Ken Adams reported on the updates from the Finance Co-mission. Ken announced the sched-uling of the church audit as soon as positions on the committee are filled. The co-mission recommends the support of Rhodes Grove children and youth campers remain at $160 for overnight camps and $70 for day camps in 2017. The Financial Summary for January 2017 was also distributed and discussed.

• Local Outreach – Tom Knepper spoke on the focuses of the Local Outreach Co-mission. Their recent meeting included 14 guests and 12 ministries that shared about how the support of our church is enabling them to engage and bless our community. The ministries are very grateful for the support of King Street Church. Tom announced that the co-mission observed how God is alive and well and working within our church. The co-mission is planning Bless Week on June 5-10.

• Missions – Scott Bert reported the progress in Haiti and the discussion on future plans. During their recent meeting Rodney Mose shared that he and Pastor Massilon are search-ing for another church in the area of Archaie that our church can partner with in the future. Rodney and Pastor Jay Brown may visit other churches when they travel to Haiti in April. Pastor Jay Brown presented the possibility of the Compassion International bus coming to King Street Church. Within the bus the congregation would have the opportunity to experience what it is like to live in poverty.

• Personnel Relations – Eric Oyer distributed and presented recommendations to the board from the Personnel Relations Co-mission. After the presentation of job descriptions, a motion

Winter Slam UpdateOn February 3–5 our Student Ministry

took 97 students in grade 7-12 and 25 small group leaders and bus drivers to the Winter Slam Retreat. This event was once again held at Laurelville Mennonite Center and Hidden Valley Ski Resort near Pittsburgh, PA. The King Street Church Worship Band provided the worship for the weekend and Roger Vezeau provided some challenging messages for the students.

Over the weekend Roger focused on: making sure that we are not trying to write our own stories but that we are allowing God to, that it is important to take the time to ask about other people’s stories and that we need to know where we are in the pool (where we are in our walk with Christ). We had one student from King Street make a first time decision for Christ. In addition 15 students make the decision to be baptized and over 50 rededicated their lives to the Lord. This weekend had an amazing impact on our students and adult leaders.

Thank you for having prayed for this event and our students. It is evident that God was and is working in the lives of our middle school and high school students.

Undividedby Nancy FritzPrayer Ministry

Not everyone thinks exactly alike when it comes to prayer. Some people see prayer as a fire escape, “use only in case of emergency.” To others prayer is like a first aid kit—kept high on a shelf and only opened when you can’t work out a solution to a difficult situation yourself. Some people don’t think to call on God unless there are no other options.

Much of our misguided or incorrect impres-sions about prayer stem from our background; if we never heard our parents pray, we’re likely to grow up with the idea that prayer is not really that important. In some of the more conserva-tive circles, only the men pray out loud, not the women. Churches use various ways to teach, promote and implement prayer in their con-gregations. Not too many years ago attendance at a mid-week prayer meeting was nearly equal to the Sunday morning worship service.

Theologian and author A.W. Tozer, writes in one of his books: “Prayer, at its best, is the total expression of the total life. Some would agree with this; however, many individuals divide their life into two compartments—the secular and the sacred. A secular life includes holding down a job, raising a family, taking care of a house and property, keeping social appointments, etc. The sacred section of life includes going to church and Sunday school, saying grace before meals, volunteering to help in a needy place, bowing your head when the pastor prays, enrolling in a Bible study class, practicing a daily devotional time, reading through the Prayer Sheet, taking a meal to a shut-in, etc.”

Tozer also made this statement: “Every act of our lives should contribute to the glory of God.” In I Cor. 10: 32 and Col. 3:17 the Apostle Paul said, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” How do we interpret this and attempt

to obey? We begin by looking at our perfect example, Jesus, the Son of God who was born a human being, lived in a sinful world, was met with opposition and conflict and sacrificed His life for our sins. In His 33 years on earth, Jesus never performed a non-sacred act! Jesus said in John 8:29, “I do always those things that please the Father.” We’re reminded that, to consider claiming this statement as our own commit-ment to God, will require much prayer, med-itation and contemplation. We must agree to lift up every act into a living kingdom and turn our whole life into a sacrament. A sacrament is described as an expression of an inward grace. A life totally consecrated to doing all for His glory will release the painful duality of secular and sacred. The controversial decisions about right and wrong will begin to fade and we can expect God’s restful unity and perfect peace to become a constant companion.

Lord willing, next month’s article will offer some basic “how-to helps.”

Once More Ministries Report

Once More Ministry is preparing for the March 11 distribution. We want to thank everyone for your generosity and faithfulness to this ministry. Your gift of love and grace to your community is a blessing to everyone and shows that God’s love is ALIVE and ACTIVE at King Street Church.

Just as Pastor Jody leads us through the lessons of transformation, the recip-ients of the toiletries are also receiving seeds of our Lord’s love. May they also feel the beginning of their transforma-tion.

At this time our most needed items are toothpaste, woman’s deodorant, razors, shave creme, fabric softener and feminine products. But most of all, please continue to pray for this ministry and its recipients.

Romans 12:9-13: Love must be sin-cere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joy-ful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Thanks be to God, and thank you all for hearing His call,

Over 100,000 women in churches across the country are expected to participate in this one-day inspirational event! Sessions will focus on the power of prayer and learning to study God’s Word for yourself. Anthony Evans will lead worship. Priscilla will also facilitate prayer experiences to engage women in prayer both for themselves and one another.

Priscilla’s trademark teaching is founded on expository teaching and the unparalleled power of prayer. She doesn’t hand out sugar-coated truths or half-hearted declarations; instead, you’ll experience whole-hearted teaching to inspire and challenge you to step into God’s plan for your life. Invite any lady you know who might need some spiritual encouragement. We have really enjoyed hosting many ladies from other churches at the Beth Moore Simulcast in September, and we would love to see many sisters-in-Christ from the community join us for this event as well.

Update: Night to Shineby Susanna AllenCommunications Coordinator

The Night to Shine event here at KSC was truly a triumph. It was incredible that 236 people volunteered to help and many businesses donated food, tux rentals, limo rides and more! The volunteers decorated the rooms, checked coats, gave out flowers and gifts, prepared food and laid the crowns and tiaras out on tables. They applied makeup to ladies who rarely get the privilege of dressing up and curled their hair. They knelt down and shined the shoes of men who were visibly honored by this act of service. They served as buddies to all those who attended, to make sure their night was really a dream come true.

17

It was a beautiful night! There was good food, fun dancing and a very special ceremony where every participant was crowned either the king or queen of the ball.

This event told our community that we care about people with special needs. As we joined with hundreds of other churches, it broadcast to the world that we value every human life to the highest degree. But most importantly, this event spoke truth to each of our brothers and sisters with special needs — that we love you and your value is beyond measure.

Thanks to all who helped make the Night to Shine a success!

MISSIONS NEWS

Jamaica Mission Trip–2017by Pastor Ron CookMinister of Pastoral Care

On Saturday, January 21, I left with 12 persons from the Salem U. B. Church for a mission trip to Mandeville, Jamaica. The Salem team left Jamaica on January 31 and I was joined by seven men from King Street, namely, Clair Hostetter, Rick Piper, Mike Plum, Caleb Plum, Paul Strubhar, Lynn Eberly, and Tom Papoutsis. Both mission teams were involved in working at the Regent College of the Caribbean (formerly

Some members of the Jamaica Mission TeamFirst row: Mike Plum, Clair Hostetter, Rick Piper, Lynn Eberly. Second row: Owen, Paul Stubhar, Tom Papoutsis, Caleb PlumJamaica Bible College). There were three main goals that I had for this trip: continuing work on the Dining Hall/Multipurpose building, installing propane hot water heaters in the present dorm and making cabinets for the dorm kitchen.

The main emphasis is the continued work

on the Dining Hall/Multipurpose Building that was started in 2013. Salem U. B. Church has taken the initiative in building this structure. It was a dream of Bishop Wilber L. Sites, Jr., who for numerous years after retirement taught Bible and seminary courses to the students at the college. The college got the plans drawn for the building and Bishop Sites looked forward to its construction. However, he died prior to the construction beginning. In 2013 the footers were laid and the walls were begun. Work at the building is slow because of lack of money and manpower. The Jamaican U. B. Churches are vibrant and growing, but because of inflation they have little money left over for the construction of buildings at the college.

Owen, a Jamaican carpenter and mason, along with several other mason workers, work on the building as funds are available. The Salem Church has been going to Jamaica since 2013 to work on the building for a week in January. Owen and his helpers work alongside the Salem mission team while they are there. The walls have been completed over the last several years and some of the concrete floor laid. This year the Salem team completed additional bathroom walls and an additional wall for the kitchen. They worked very diligently to get these walls built for the mission team coming from King Street.

On Tuesday, January 31 the mission team

21

fellows from King Street arrived late afternoon at Mandeville ready to work. Work began bright and early on Wednesday morning, February 1. Mike Edwards, a local plumber from Man-deville, met at 8 a.m. with Mike Plum and the men to lay out the rough plumbing for the facil-ity. After I went into Mandeville to purchase the PVC needed and cement, they began the work of sewer and water plumbing. Everything there is done by hand with a pick, digging bar and shovel. It wasn’t long until the plumbing began to take shape. By the end of the day, there were sore backs and aching muscles.

The men worked Wednesday through Satur-day plus Monday, February 6, to complete the work. The accompanying pictures cannot show

the amount of work that the team performed. They completed sewer, water, and laying con-crete in three bathrooms. In addition, they poured concrete in three other large areas of the floor. This was all done with the concrete being mixed on the ground with shovels, buckets of water and wheelbarrows. The guys completed much more than I ever dreamed. Even with all the work, sore muscles and aching backs, they are all ready to go back again next year.

The building is now ready for the roof to be installed. This is a big project because the cost will be $95,000 US currency. My goal this year is to work on raising this amount of money so that the roof can be installed. Because of its immensity, it will need to be installed by a licensed roof contractor from Jamaica. The

price has already been received and will go with this contractor when the money is available.

The second project was taking and installing propane instant hot water heaters in the present dorm. Even though I have been in Jamaica on

mission trips five times, I have never gotten acclimated to cold showers. Thanks to two men from Salem and Mike Plum, the water heaters are installed and working. WOW! The last four showers in Mandeville were wonderful because they were hot.

The third project was a desire of mine to build and install kitchen cabinets for the ladies who went to cook our meals. Now they have wall cabinets where items can be placed. Liston, a Jamaican, will finish the pantry painting because I did not have time.

EXCERPTS FROM RECENT COMMUNICATIONS

Pierces’ E-Postal NewsletterFebruary 6, 2017(Bernie and Sherry serve in Lincoln, Nebraska with Christar.)

Recent VisitsDuring one recent visit, we were able to

pray in Jesus’ name for our new friends, Hally and Jason, to have a baby. They are Yazidi and knew Christians back in Iraq, which sparked a good conversation.

Please pray with us that if it would be the best thing for God’s glory, that God would grant them a child. They asked us to have our friends pray as well. Since God doesn’t waste our pain, it was a blessing to share in the pain we knew well for 10 years.

YES, we can learn English! The ESL club for Yazidi women was retitled

“YES.” During the month of February, Sherry will be the teacher for the group time; this will be her first time doing this. In addition, she hurt her back a couple weeks ago and was feeling better, but along with a few other symptoms.

Thanks for praying for God’s healing touch and a new sense of confidence that comes from knowing God is in control.

Fruitful TaxiingPart of the ministry here is being hands, feet

and wheels. Please pray for safety in driving and for good times of fellowship/outreach, depend-ing on the person and that God would speak to hearts through kindness, limited language bridges and Arabic Christian music.

Special Prayer NeedCould you please pray that our debt to

Christar could be eliminated? We incurred this during our move/relocation. Thank you

for those who have already been contributing. We are so grateful. Thank you!

Update from the GerlachsFebruary 2, 2017(Bryan and Emily are presently in the area and have a goal to return to Thailand this summer.)

Training with TEAM We are heading to North Carolina! We

will be in Asheville, N.C. from Feb. 3–13 for our second and final training with TEAM. The “Pre-Departure Orientation” (or PDO) will set us up to be able to head back to Chiang Mai by this summer. We will be preparing our hearts and minds to transition back into a foreign culture and learning how to effectively navigate in a new context. We are also very excited to have the opportunity to connect with another couple heading to Chiang Mai!

We still have questions to answer about what exactly we will be doing when we get back to Chiang Mai, but we are so thankful that we will have a great team to plug into when we arrive. We know that the Lord has amazing things in store for us in Thailand and we are really excited to see how He will use us.

Prayer and Praise• Need for Housing – Our house sitting

situation in Chambersburg will come to an end in mid-March and we are in search of housing for the remainder of our time in the U.S.

• Financial Support – Our support is increasing! Praise God, we are over 80% of our goal and have been able to go on “salary” with TEAM! This is a huge answer to prayer. We will need to be at 100% before we can return to Thailand.

• Vision for a ministry plan with our new team and sending church. We are steadily

23

working on this with TEAM and King Street Church. We would appreciate continued prayers as we seek the Lord for guidance.

• Thailand – Pray for our Thai church, Cool Shade of Life, and for Pastor Ogaat as the church continues to be the hands and feet of Christ to their neighbors.

Emily’s YWAM UpdateFebruary 6, 2017(Emily Schoenleber is serving in New Zealand with Youth With a Mission)

Hey everyone! It’s crazy for me to think that I’ve been back in New Zealand for almost a month already! There have been many things going on but amidst it all, God is faithful!

Our students began arriving about two weeks ago and we are so blessed to have all 61 of them here in Tauranga with us! Since there is such a large number of students, similar to last January, we have split the school into two locations or two campuses! The first campus being our training centre, “the base”, out in the countryside and the second campus again being our medical ship, the Pacific Hope, which is docked in downtown Tauranga. Though there are two locations for accommodation, we all join together at a church building in town for lectures each week.

We have just finished the first official week of traditional lectures and week two of the Dis-cipleship Training School (DTS). The first week of the DTS begins with welcoming the students, going through the DTS handbook, orientation, etc. The second part of the first week is what we call life stories. This is an opportunity for the students to be vulnerable and transparent, sharing their testimonies, their stories, their highs and their lows. For most students this is the first time they share those deep dark secrets. But it is actually such a beautiful time because everyone feels like weights have lifted off their shoulders when they learn that it is

not up to them to bear the weight of things they have done.

In regards to my role for this, I once again have the privilege of leading the Prayer and Passion stream! We have eight students in the Prayer and Passion stream and it is an immense blessing to me! Leading the stream comes with a few different responsibilities, one of the main ones being teaching during our stream time each week or arranging for a guest speaker to come. A new role that I have taken on is that of being one of the DTS Coordinators. I learn new things everyday of what this role entails, but in a nutshell it is a lot of behind the scenes logistics, facilitating, etc.

I will never stop being amazed by the good-ness, provision and faithfulness of our Father! Thank you to each one of you for reading about what I’m up to, praying for me and supporting me financially. I so value all of you! If you have any questions or want to know more about what I’m doing, feel free to email me: [email protected]).

February 21, 2017I’m going to Vanuatu!

We just announced to our students yester-day where they’re all going for outreach! I am so excited to announce that I will be leading a team of 10 (including myself ) back to the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu! We leave in mid-April and return at the beginning of June.

Another email will come later explaining our plans in detail, but I wanted to ask all of you to pray about financially supporting my getting to Vanuatu. I am still in need of money for my flights there/back. We haven’t booked them yet but they could range in price from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000. Would you pray about giving even just $10 or $20 towards my flights?

As always, you can donate directly online via our website: mrmdts.org/pay or you can donate to me directly via PayPal. Just follow this link: paypal.me/emilyschoenleber.
