THE PREAMBLE The U.S. Constitution What is the Preamble? The Preamble lists the six goals of the government It is the introduction to the Constitution; it reflects the basic idea of our government: the right of the people to govern themselves. We the people, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Who gives the government its power? We the people! Why? The framers feared misuse of power by the national government. So, the 1 st goal is To form a more perfect Union. This means.. To create a nation in which the states worked together. The 2 nd goal is. To establish Justice. This means.. To make laws and set up fair courts. The 3 rd goal is. To insure domestic Tranquility, which means.. Keep peace within the country. The 4 th goal provide for the common defence (defense). This means.. To safeguard nation against attacks. 5 th goal promote the general Welfare Which means.. Contribute to the well being of all people. And finally, the 6 th goal. To secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. This means Make sure future citizens remain free. If the Constitution were an essay, The Preamble would be the introduction!
