THE PRESIDENCY CLUB NEWS

The I Bar becomes 2 shortly. The Second Anniversary

falls on August 26th, 2008. Going down memory

lane, here’s The I Bar Story…

For ages, once the members at the then existing

The Island Bar when they finish with decimating the

lousy weather and cursing the ruling government,

inevitably the subject turns to renovation of the bar.

Members felt that this was long overdue! The Island

Bar was certainly the best in its Class when it was

first inaugurated and stood as a fine bar for most of

its life span, but over the years it had weathered and

needed a whole new look. It needed an adrenaline

shot!

This cry for change from members was taken up in

right earnest by the then sitting Committee who

wholehearted was of the view, that the facility

needed an immediate new look. The then Honorary

Secretary Mr. R. Ramachandran (currently Vice

President) constituted a ‘Project Committee’, which

got the ball moving forward. The Project committee

consisted a team of Committee Members, Mr. Anil

Nair (currently the Honorary Secretary), Mr. Vivish

George (MIC- Bar & Entertainment October 2005-

September 2007), Mr. Viji Joseph (currently the

Honorary Treasurer), Mr. K. Satyanarayana (

currently serving as Committee Member) and The

Honorary Secretary himself. This committee was to

report and clear all proposals in principle with the

main committee.

The Main Committee besides the Project Team and

the Honorary Secretary, serving in office (portfolios

as held then) consisted of IPP Mr. K. Sathyendra

Kumar, The President Mr. Chandramouli, Vice

President Mr. Ranjit Jacob, Treasurer

Mr. Ramani and Committee Members

Mr. Chandrakanth Jain, Mr. T.S. Sivanagam, Mr.

Sham Kripalani, Mr. Ramasamy, Mr. G.P.

Vijaykumar & Dr. Janardhanam. Their inputs and

fantastic support was the key to the success and

timely delivery of the project.

As first step few architects were asked to make a

presentation to the project committee. The short

listed few were then placed before the committee

for a presentation. The committee finally chose a

young firm of architects, graduates from IIT, to do

the job – Rajiv and Ritu. One found that they

were enthusiastic and bubbling with novel ideas

and concepts. We wanted a bar that was a trend

setter and of international design.

It was decided as matter of principle that this

renovation would not just be a renovation but a re-

building exercise.

There were elaborate discussions and debates on

everything! One had to balance between budget,

practicality and comfort- what a job!

In short the work carried out at the bar included;

New flooring, New false ceiling, new lighting, New

Daiken Air-conditioning which today can handle a

bar that is spilling out of its seams with people at

events, New windows and doors, New Furniture &

Seating would also help with NVH (Noise Vibration

Harness), a dramatic all wood Bar Counter, Back

Office for storage & billing, fantastic wall art laced

with humour, 40" LCD TV (recently upgraded to 50"

Plasma), Jamo Audio for music, classy Cutlery &

Crockery, heavy duty Electrical housing, Bar Counter

props…the list is endless. Simple, New

Everything!

The work began in May of 2006 and was

completed and inaugurated on August 26th, 2006

with a mega launch. The I Bar turned out to be most

of the most swanky and stylish bars in the city. Still

continues to be one of the best bars among Clubs

in the Country.

A bigger challenge was – what to name it! While

some were in favour of retaining the old name –

tradition etc., some opined that since the bar was

redone it should be renamed too! The concept of

the Island had also now changed with the bar

counter now being positioned to one side.

This turned out to be a project by itself! After much

debate and after going through countless

suggestions it was decided to name the same as

The I Bar. Trendy, catchy and short with a leaning to

the old name and has strong attitude. Even the

signage was given thought too and was designed

by one of the leading design houses in Chennai M/

s. Signet Designs. In short every inch of detailing

The launch of

the stylish

outdoor facility

Stratosphere,

The I Lounge

which was later

rechristened

Ozone – the

lounge

completed the

all areas of the

primary Bar

project. In

keeping with the swanky new bar, the Staircase

leading up to the bar and the Toilets were redone.

In the world of renovation and construction and

with the ever spiraling costs of raw material, the

THE PRESIDENCY CLUB NEWSteam had to come up with a smart bar within a

modest budget. To that extent this project had

more than achieved this goal.

The 1st event at The I Bar was in April of 2007

which was four weekends of the unforgettable

event that started it all – Karaoke Nites – the

contest for PC’s Karaoke King & Queen. This

was followed by many events, with the 1st

anniversary being celebrated in August 2007, with

a performance by India’s most popular Rock & Pop

Band ‘Skinny Alley’. The trend of exclusive events

at The I Bar continues to this day with events such

as the Jazz & Wine, Cocktail Nite, Ladies Nite,

Pub Quiz, The Beer Fest to name a few fantastic

events held this year. This facility also continues to

bring in large number of members and their guests

on a daily basis.

The I Bar is a classic case of ‘WORKING

TOGETHER WORKS’!

YES, it was a fun-filled tennis tournament with serious matches on the one hand and glitz & glamour-filled

social get-together at the end of the tournament.

For the first time, a tournament was organised for kids and we have an encouraging participation from 36

kids, all of them playing with great enthusiasm. The kids played with gusto in the Bunny-rabbits edition, while

the others battled it out with a lot of Bravado for the Lions-Trophy. After sifting through the pretenders, the

tournament found the worthy winners, whose names are published in this issue of the News magazine.

The prize distribution function was presided over by Mr. Brijehwar Singh, IAS, who gave a polished speech.

Our friendly neighbor, the Hon’ble. Deputy Commissioner Mr. P.M. Hamsa, .from Srilanka spent a lot of time

with our members and gave a diplomatic but interesting speech. Thereafter, more than 120 members and

family members joined for cocktails and lavish dinner with light music by Mr. Shafee and group. It was

Razzmatazz all the way, and kudos to the tennis fraternity.

All the kids who participated were awarded medals for their efforts.

celebrated Members Nite with great aplomb.

Thanks to the rain gods, we were spared by the rain

threatening to disrupt the eventful evening and

Members were treated to a great night of

entertainment & dinner.

The tone for the night was set and started with

inspiring Carnatic Fusion played by the talented and

popular Mandolin Rajesh.

Then there was action packed Dance performances

by Abhishek’s Karun Krafts - to exciting Hindi & Tamil

music - by popular television artistes Sureswar, Sai

Prashanth, Narendra, Deepa, Devipriya, Vandana,

Priyadarshini & Master Roopesh which was

competently compered by Abhishek, leading TV

star.

Then was the time to reminiscence over the music

of yesteryears. Old Hindi & Tamil songs. Rajesh, Anu

& Mukesh, popular singers, set a very, very

melodious & nostalgic mood.

Next was scintillating, graceful and captivating

performances by International Dancers, twin sisters,

Nadia & Sasha Ivanova who came down specially for

this event. As the night went by and moods became

lighter and members wanting more of the same, the

action moved to the poolside, Music, dancing and

revelry continued upto 1 am

Senior members were able to enjoy the evening

upto the wee hours, thanks to the courtesy drop
