Ashton OvertureJames Swearingen’s talents as a performer, composer/arranger and educator include a background of extensive training and experience. He has earned degrees from Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University. Mr. Swearingen is currently Professor of Music, Department Chair of Music Education and one of several resident composers at Capital University located in Columbus, Ohio. He also serves as a staff arranger for the famed Ohio State University Marching Band. With over 450 published works, he has written band compositions and arrangements that reflect a variety of musical forms and styles. He joined The American Bandmasters Association, considered to be the most prestigious bandmaster organization in the world. Many of Mr. Swearingen’s most popular band compositions have been recorded by the prestigious Washington Winds.

Canterbury TalesJames Curnow was born in Port Huron, Michigan and raised in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he received his initial musical training in the public schools and The Salvation Army Instrumental Programs in these cities. He lives in Nicholasville, Kentucky where he is president, composer, and educational consultant for Curnow Music Press, Inc., publishers of significant music for concert band and brass band. Curnow’s Canterbury Tales is based on Chaucer’s 14th century collection of stories.

I. The Knight’s Tale. Infused with lush descriptions and elaborate phrasing, The Knight’s Tale is a story of love and war. Close cousins Arcite and Palamon grow to love the same maiden, and to hate each other. The tale is a chivalric romance, in which there are strict codes of behavior that must be followed.

II. The Franklin’s Tale. In medieval times Franklins were landowners who were not of noble birth; they were often viewed as social climbers. Chaucer’s Franklin relates the story of noble lovers separated by a long voyage. While her knight is away seeking fame and glory, Lady Dorigan swears a rash oath, promising to become the mistress of Squire Aurelius, if he will remove the rocks that are a threat to her husband’s safe return. With the help of a magician, Aurelius tricks Dorigan into believing that the rocks are gone. She considers suicide to avoid losing her honor, until her husband tells her that she must keep her foolish promise. In the end Aurelius recognizes the true love between the knight and his lady and releases Dorigan from her oath. The magician who created the illusion that the rocks had disappeared also forgives Aurelius’ debt, whereupon the Franklin asks his audience, “Which was the mooste fre?”(Which was most noble: the lady, the squire or the magician?)

III. The Miller’s Tale. The second of Chaucer’s tales, The Miller’s Tale is the story of a randy student, his dimwitted landlord and the landlord’s cheating wife. It’s a bawdy comedy that provides a stark contrast to The Knight’s Tale’s adherence to chivalric conventions.(It is still found in many Christian hymnals, albeit with a different text.) In 1908, Vaughan Williams used Tallis’ tune in a production of his opera Pilgrim’s Progress and again in 1910 when he was asked to write a new piece, “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis” for the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester Cathedral.

The Liberty BellJohn Philip Sousa hardly needs an introduction. The Norman Rockwell of American music, he is known to (or at least his music is recognized by) all Americans. He was born, appropriately, in Washington, D.C., the son of a Spanish trombonist in the Marine Band. His father, though born in Spain, was of Portuguese origin. “Sousa” is a town in Portugal. Legend has it that his name originally was Antonio So, and that he added the “usa” to the name as a tribute to his adopted country. Sousa denies this,

but if this story is not true, it ought to be, for as musicologist Wilfrid Mellers says, “...it is truer than fact.” Mellers, a British expert in American music, says that Sousa is to the march as Strauss is to the waltz.

The Liberty Bell was written before it was named. It was intended for an operetta that Sousa was writing, but the funding fell through. It was still unpublished and unnamed when Sousa and his band manager visited Chicago for the Colombian Exposition of 1893. They were watching a show, “America,” during which the backdrop came down that featured the Liberty Bell. Sousa’s band manager, George Hinton, suggested The Liberty Bell as the name of the recently composed march. I don’t know if the prominence of the bell in that work suggested the title to Hinton, or if Sousa added that bell after the suggestion by Hinton.

ElementsBrian Balmages is an active composer, conductor, producer, and performer. He received his bachelor’s degree in music from James Madison University and his master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. Mr. Balmages’s works for symphonic band, orchestra, and brass have been performed throughout the world, including the College Band Directors National and Regional Conferences, the Midwest Clinic, the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference, the International Trombone Festival, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference.

Elements is a short 4-movement work (thus its subtitle Petite Symphony) constructed in the same form as a traditional symphony: Allegro non troppo, Largo, Scherzo, and Allegro vivace. Each movement corresponds with and musically depicts a specific element: air, water, earth, and fire.

Overture to CandideLeonard Bernstein often was widely regarded as the Renaissance man of American music, and with good reason. In addition to being one of the world’s preeminent conductors, Bernstein distinguished himself as a composer, pianist, author and teacher. His famous “Young People’s Concerts” showed him to be an engaging television personality, and he proved equally capable of delivering the prestigious Charles Eliot Norton lectures at Harvard.

Bernstein’s work as a composer mirrored the eclecticism of his career as a whole, and included pop songs, film scores and Broadway musicals as well as symphonies and choral works. The most familiar portion of Bernstein’s output rests in his scores for Broadway shows, and one of these, West Side Story, ranks among the most successful musicals ever produced. But not all of Bernstein’s projects were so well received. In 1956 the composer collaborated with playwright Lillian Hellman on a musical adaptation of Voltaire’s satirical novel Candide. The show had a modest run on Broadway, closing after only 73 performances. It has been revived several times but remains known mainly through Bernstein’s overture, which has become a popular concert piece.

Sarabande and PolkaMalcolm Arnold began his career playing trumpet professionally, but by the age of 30 his life was devoted to composition. He was ranked with Benjamin Britten as one of the most sought-after composers in Britain. His natural melodic gift earned him a reputation as a composer of light music in works such as some of his concert overtures and the sets of Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish and Cornish Dances. He was also a highly successful composer of film music, penning the scores to over a hundred features and documentaries, including titles such as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Hobson’s Choice and the St Trinian’s series. His nine symphonies are often deeply personal and show a more serious side to his work, which has proved more controversial. Arnold also wrote a variety of concertos and chamber works, as well as music for the theatre including major ballets.

These two short movements are taken from Arnold’s charming ballet called “Solitaire”. Originally scored for a small chamber ensemble of orchestral instruments, the pieces are also available in piano solo form. This arrangement for band captures their light and entertaining nature. The Sarabande reflects a slow Spanish dance in triple time. It is full of the warmth and sunshine of the region. The Polka, on the other hand, reflects Arnold’s freedom of spirit in a frivolous parody of this dance style.

George Washington Bicentennial MarchTo commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of America’s first president, the Bicentennial Commission held a gala celebration in the nation’s capital on February 22, 1932. John Philip Sousa wrote this march in 1930 at the Commission’s request to mark the event. In one of his last public appearances before his death, Sousa conducted the combined bands of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps at the celebration.

When Jesus WeptWhen Jesus wept the falling tear / In mercy flowed beyond all bound; When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear / Seized all the guilty world around.

The setting of the above text is in the form of a round by the American composer William Billings (1746 - 1800) and it is used in its original form. This early composer wrote simple sturdy tunes that were popular with the colonists, reflecting the ruggedness, deep religiosity, and patriotic fervor often associated with the Revolutionary period. This work was transcribed for band by William Schuman from his New England Triptych and forms the central prelude to Chester, interpreted from Billings’ hymn and marching song of the same name. The composition calls for controlled, sensitive, legato playing from the ensemble. The solo parts, given to the euphonium and trumpet, are demanding in range, color, and intonation.

Pineapple PollSir Arthur Sullivan (1842 - 1900) was the son of a military band clarinetist who was the first professor of clarinet when the Royal Military School of Music opened in England at Sandhurst in 1957. Sullivan’s light operas, written to William Gilbert’s libretti over about twenty-five years from 1871, delighted the public and made a fortune for both men and their impresario D’Oyly Carte.

Sir Charles Mackerras was born in the United States of Australian parents in 1925. He studied in Sydney and Prague and made his debut in opera at Sadler’s Wells. From 1966 to 1969, he was First Conductor with the Hamburg State Opera. From 1970 to 1977, he was the Musical Director of Sadler’s Wells in London. Mackerras is a specialist in the Czech repertoire, notably Janácek, and has recorded a cycle of his operas with the Vienna Philharmonic.

The ballet “Pineapple Poll” is a spoof of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. In 1950, the copyright on Sullivan’s music expired. One of the first to exploit this opportunity was Sadler’s Wells, who staged the ballet set exclusively to music by Sullivan, arranged by a young Charles Mackerras. During the war, Mackerras had played oboe in the pit of a Sydney theater, where they produced all of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas except for Utopia and Grand Duke, the only two not represented in the ballet. Every bar of music, even the short bridge passages, is taken from some opera. The plot is based upon “The Bumboat Woman’s Story” of Gilbert’s “Bab Ballards”, which was later developed by Gilbert into “H.M.S. Pinafore”. The story revolves around Pineapple Poll and her colleagues, who are all madly in love with the captain of the good ship H.M.S. Hot Cross Bun. In order to gain admittance to the ship, they disguise themselves in sailors’ clothes, a fact which is kept secret from the audience until near the end of the ballet.

Russian Christmas MusicAlfred Reed was a 23 year old staff arranger for the 529th Army Air Corps Band when he was called upon to create what has become a masterpiece of the wind literature. It was in 1944, when optimism was running high with the successful invasion of France and Belgium by the Allied forces. A holiday band concert was planned by the city of Denver to further promote Russian-American unity with premiers of new works from both countries. Roy Harris was placed in charge and planned the second movement of his Sixth Symphony (the “Abraham Lincoln Symphony”) to be the American work. The Russian work was to have been Prokofiev’s March, Op. 99, but Harris discovered that it had already been performed in the United States (by Reed’s own organization). With just 16 days until the concert, Harris assigned Reed, already working for Harris as an aid, to compose a new Russian work for the concert. Scouring the Corp’s music library, Reed found an authentic 16th-century Russian Christmas Song “Carol of the Little Russian Children” to use for an introductory theme. Drawing on his investigations of Eastern Orthodox liturgical music for other thematic ideas, he completed the score of Russian Christmas Music in 11 days; copyists took another two days to prepare parts for rehearsal. The music was first performed on December 12, 1944, on a nationwide NBC broadcast. A concert performance was given in Denver two days later.
