One of the most remarkable stories in the literature of the world is the story of Joseph. Sold into slavery by his brothers, he found himself alone far from home and all that was familiar. When tempted by his master’s wife, he was rewarded for his chastity by being put in prison. He is the classical example of the person for whom every thing seems to go wrong. Yet, he refused to let despair, bitterness, and wrong doing control him. The result of his faithfulness to God was that he rose to the second position in the Egyptian government, and he became the salvation of the brothers who had sold him into slavery. How does one explain such a life? Scripture gives a simple explanation: the Lord was with him! From a biblical perspective this seems to be enough to explain such a remarkable life. The presence of God makes every misfortune and every injustice bearable. In fact, this is the explanation given for the lives of all the heroes of the faith in the Bible: the Lord was with them! No matter what happens, no matter what transpires, as members of the First United Methodist Church of Newbern and members of the Mt. Carmel UMC, we must be faithful to the vow we made to God and the church when we became members. If we wish for the churches to grow, and even exist in the future, we must be steadfast and faithful. If we will do this: the Lord will be with us! The blessings of God be on you all, Bro. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: “But while Joseph was in the prison, the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.” (Genesis 39:20-21).
