Have you always wanted to be your own boss? Does the idea of working your own hours, managing a team of motivated staff and creating

your own nancial security appeal to you? Well franchising could be for you.

Franchising allows you to work for yourself but not by yourself. While you will be responsible for your own business, you’ll also have the support of the franchisor along the way. Whether it be in getting the business on its feet, marketing it to your local community or becoming a multi-site owner, the biggest advantage to joining a franchise system is the safety net that comes with buying into an established brand.

This issue of The Pro ler, which comes as a bi-annual supplement to Franchising magazine, will whet your entrepreneurial appetite by providing an overview of a number of different business systems, whether they be retail, mobile or home-based.

Take this as your rst step in the franchising journey. Decide which business model is right for you, decide what you want out of your venture – is it work/life balance? Is it big nancial returns? Or perhaps you want to grow your own mini-empire of franchise territories? Regardless, you will need to conduct thorough due diligence. Talk to your family, make sure you have a good support network behind you, then get legal and nancial advice from professionals who specialise in franchising. And talk to franchisees – old and new - to get honest opinions on what life is like as a business owner in that brand.

Good luck!Danielle Bowling

Bakers Delight

Bakers Delight – rise to the challengeExtensive training and one-on-one business support

It’s not everyday you hear about a career change as significant as moving from driving a truck to running a bakery, but for Bakers

Delight franchisee Kilian Ryan the transition made perfect sense.

Irish-born Kilian explored his passion for food early on by training as a chef before he made the move to driving trucks for Coca-Cola. Kilian loved the variety and travel associated with the job, but several years in, found himself faced with a glass ceiling in terms of career progression.

While on the road, Kilian’s eyes were opened to the inner workings of running a small business, which ignited his decision to make the jump. Many of his stops as a driver included visiting Bakers Delight bakeries, and while speaking to franchisees and bakery staff along the way he knew this proven and established network was the right choice for him.

“When my wife and I were looking for a business opportunity, Bakers Delight seemed to be a great fit for us and the idea of being in control of making your product from scratch and delighting your customers each and everyday, was very appealing,” says Kilian.

Although Kilian and his wife Suellen had no baking experience, they are pleased to report that Bakers Delight provided them with all the required training. “All new franchisees undergo comprehensive, ‘hands-on’ training to ensure they are equipped with the skill set to become capable of operating their own bakery,” he says.

“From business planning, managing staff, financial management and local marketing, to learning how to bake and

everything in between, it was perfect for us,” says Kilian.

Now the proud owners of Bakers Delight Balwyn, Kilian and Suellen are enjoying the challenge and flexibility of being their own boss.

“It’s not always easy, but with the support and one-on-one business guidance from Bakers Delight operations staff and over 500 other franchisees, we feel confident we can overcome any challenge and continue to grow…. who knows, we may even purchase another bakery one day.”

Bakers Delight is predicting strong performance for the coming financial

year with plans to continue expanding its operations, including seeking 100 new franchisees across the network.

Bakers Delight is Australia’s most successful bakery franchise. Over the past 31 years the company has grown to over 700 bakeries across three countries, serving two million customers each week.

Anytime Fitness

Anytime Fitness Australia master franchisors, Justin McDonell and his sister Jacinta McDonell-Jimenez,

have reached some impressive numbers this year, with over 160 clubs now open and 330 territories sold, making them the most successful international Anytime Fitness master franchisors.

John Kersh, VP of International Development for Anytime Fitness says “Justin and Jacinta, and the talented team of managers and franchisees that they’ve assembled, deserve all the credit for their tremendous success. They are without a doubt our most successful international master franchisees”.

The secret to their success: “We look for franchisees who understand the importance of sales and marketing along with an exceptional passion to deliver a great member experience,” says McDonell-Jimenez. “Our most successful franchisees focus on sales and marketing and hire a terrific club manager to produce an ideal club culture. Our clubs offer the members what they need – great equipment, personal attention, and convenient and affordable facilities, open anytime.”

To further strengthen this success, Anytime Fitness has an exciting innovation which will add to its 24/7 philosophy. The franchise is launching a new product called Anytime Health in July which will be free to all members. It’s an online nutrition and exercise program which is designed to be a portal for members to get advice from a virtual personal trainer. They can post questions and get answers, making it hugely interactive and personalised. Members can also program in their current weight

and what they are hoping to achieve. Based on their activity at the gym and outside it, Anytime Health will provide a recommended calorie count with recipes and food components. There will also be videos of people working out at an Anytime club, so if, for instance, a member is wanting to develop a new program to increase their leg strength, there is an example available.

Anytime Health can help members looking to improve and maintain their health and fitness and fits seamlessly into the electro-centric lifestyle that is becoming more prolific within modern society. The new system also reflects the ‘anytime, anywhere’ values of the brand

and will provide the guidance and support that many of the general public can’t afford through expensive personal trainers and nutritionists.

A further development of Anytime Health will be to provide a service for corporations wanting to take positive measures to ensure the consistent good health and productivity of their employees. The Anytime Health system offers companies a way to improve the health of their employees and provide reduced price memberships.

Anytime Fitness truly encompasses the 24/7 fitness mantra, and 2012 will see con-tinued growth and outstanding perform-ance from the hugely successful brand.

Lollypotz

Lollypotz – gift bouquets for any occasionSweet success managed from home

Attending a women’s networking breakfast nearly three years ago spelled significant change for Tracy Fitt, the owner of

Lollypotz Southern Sydney. The speaker at that breakfast was

Lollypotz founder Louise Curtis. Tracy was so inspired by Lollypotz, its fast growth and its beautiful product that she immediately approached Louise to start a franchise from her home.

Tracy, a stockbroker in her previous life, always fancied herself a businesswoman, and the mother of two found that Lollypotz was the perfect choice to take that step.

Tracy makes the gift bouquets herself, and delivers them in her local area. She services the internet orders, but focuses on the corporate market and now finds herself more involved in business networking than anything else.

Tracy believes the best form of local area marketing is to build relationships with key corporate clients in her area. She says “I realised over time that the best customers are those who use you again and again, and my focus has been to build strong relationships with service industry professionals who are looking to thank their customers.”

Lollypotz’s bouquets are a great alternative to flowers, and are priced well to service the corporate and retail markets.

Tracy has also taken the business to the people via pop up shops in a number of her local shopping centres. Tracy says this is a great way to showcase the business and it drives people to the website. “Our product is so beautiful, and people don’t see how great it is until they see

it with their own eyes. Our website is fantastic, but nothing showcases the product like seeing it in person.”

Whilst Christmas, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day can be exhausting, Tracy says it’s these times that deliver the most for her business and give her a great level of satisfaction.

Tracy says the support she receives from the Lollypotz team has helped her business gets on its feet. Spending time with Lollypotz’s franchise manager, Elizabeth Scheurer, on a weekly basis is more like a coaching session, rather than a franchisor checking in and with such a high level of support, there is no opportunity to lose momentum.

Tracy is now focused on building her corporate customer base through

networking groups and has Father’s Day and Christmas front of mind.

“There never seems to be any “down” time with this business, if it’s not a peak trading period, it’s a wedding, or a function that I am preparing centerpieces for.

“There are certainly a lot of facets to the business and a lot of ways to build your profile.”

Cafe2U

Cafe2U – a mobile coffee franchise that’s family friendlyLove your work and choose your lifestyle

Making the change to becoming a business owner is often motivated by a desire for a better,

more flexible lifestyle. Cafe2U offers an opportunity for people to grow a business that is suited to their personality and their choice of working hours.

Cafe2U franchise partner, Lisa Minett, operates a Cafe2U mobile espresso van in Chester Hill, New South Wales. She shares her story and says that the Cafe2U opportunity has allowed her to spend much more time with her children.

What were you doing before Cafe2U?I was working for a manufacturing company for 13 years and I started to question my next steps. Our work had a Cafe2U van call on us and I loved drinking the coffee every day. I wound up buying an existing business from the lady who served me at my netball games.

It’s been just over a year now and the business is doing everything I set out to do. The best thing is that I was earning an income from the very first day.

Who makes a good Cafe2U franchisee? What attracted you to the system? You should be outgoing. You need to make sure that the best part of the customers’ day is the moment the Cafe2U van arrives. They love it because it’s a break in their day — even if it’s just five minutes. I even did a wedding reception in a park last November.

What sets Cafe2U apart?I think it’s the support. When I had my first training day, the managing director came in and spoke about what Cafe2U

would give us to help us succeed. That really gives you confidence that they’re not going to let you fail.

The franchise development manager stays in touch, and if I ever need them to come out and spend time with me to help me be more efficient, they will.

What does franchise ownership allow you to do that you couldn’t before? The major thing is getting to spend more time with the kids. Since they were a couple of months old, I’ve been working. It means a little more work for me in the afternoon with homework and cooking dinner, but you’re getting to spend time with them.

Would you recommend the Cafe2U franchise? Why?Yes. I think it is successful. You get as much work as you want. It’s a good lifestyle. I get to start my own day with an excellent coffee! It’s flexible. If I needed to or wanted to work longer, I could.

EnVie

EnVie – the future of female fitnessDelivering fitness solutions to the modern day woman

EnVie introduces a new era in female fitness – it’s the new business solution for those look-ing to enter the intensifying

female health and wellness market. The female fitness market is solid and

strengthening however the gap between what women want and what is available, is widening. Most female fitness chains were designed over 20 years ago and while they may have evolved, they have not been custom-built to meet the realistic demands of today’s busy woman.

“We asked what do women today need and what do they want? Then we built it into the system,” says CEO Dave Hundt. An EnVie studio includes child-minding, extended hours, quick but constantly stimulating workouts, diverse exercise routines, progressive programs, a welcom-ing, supportive environment, staff who care, group training, personal training and much more. It’s a wish list directly from Australian women themselves.

Who is behind EnVie?EnVie is unique in that it has brought together Australia’s top experts in diverse disciplines to build a new fitness brand. The team has over 120 years of combined fitness and business experience. Leading experts in business intelligence, finance, retail, psychology, physiology, digital marketing, social media and architectural design have joined with fitness and health specialists to build a new discipline which incorporates best practises to ensure a successful outcome.

Training and supportAn EnVie business is completely system-ised with EnVie’s 7 Systems for Success. The training program has been designed to provide all the necessary skills and support to operate a successful and profit-

able EnVie studio. Combining theoretical, in studio and practical training, EnVie ensures franchisees are ready to face the challenges of business ownership and have the tools and ongoing support to build a business successfully.

Most franchises have a monthly royalty fee, monthly marketing fee and monthly training fee. Many then charge for access to software and operating systems. At EnVie all of these charges are combined into a low per week, per customer fee. This allows franchisees to benefit from their own business’ growth with a fixed cost per member and ensures the fran-chisor is actively working to grow the member base. “Unlike other franchisors who promote a monthly flat or fixed fran-chise fee, we are invested in the success of our franchise partners,” says Hundt.

Ready Now!EnVie makes owning a business simple to start, rewarding to run and exciting to build! EnVie takes franchisee recruitment very seriously and is interested in hearing from passionate, business savvy individuals look-ing for a highly lucrative and exciting fitness business opportunity. Franchisees must have or be willing to obtain fitness qualifications.

There are sites secured and available now. The additional BONUS of these secured sites is that they already have members currently generating cash flow plus the ability to market to a large existing database.

EmbroidMe

EmbroidMe – a low cost, low stress franchisePromotional marketing partners in a $5 billion industry

In just a decade and with attractive working hours and a model that is cash-flow strong, EmbroidMe has become the global leader in the

embroidery and promotional products industry.

The promotional industryAs part of the growing $5 billion per year market (AUS/NZ), EmbroidMe is positioned as the promotional marketing partner of businesses large and small. Shirts, caps, bags, pens, water bottles, towels, key rings, lanyards – you name it, if a customer wants to put their logo on it, EmbroidMe can do it.

Most important is the solutions-focused approach that EmbroidMe brings to the industry. More than just embroidering logos onto shirts, EmbroidMe is a true extension of its clients’ marketing departments, making creative suggestions to help promote culture and build brand awareness for its customers.

The beauty of B2BThe brand has experienced sharp growth due in part to the lifestyle-friendly nature of the business. As a B2B franchise its stores are open Monday to Friday during business hours.

Each store has a low staffing requirement of three to four and its strong supplier network means you order your stock as you get an order, so inventory is minimal and cash-flow strong.

The support of the networkThe true strength of a franchise network is the peer-to-peer and franchise field

support that helps franchisees grow. One

advocate for the EmbroidMe support model is Matt Fitzpatrick, owner of the North Sydney store. “With a lot of franchising systems you are essentially a small sales division of head office but with EmbroidMe you are utterly independent,” says Fitzpatrick. “An example of the great support provided is our POS system, which is fantastic. I can have someone trained and quoting within two hours of starting with me, and backup support is always available.”

The EmbroidMe investment is under $200,000 for a turnkey greenfield site, with a five week training program, incorporating two weeks in its World HQ in West Palm Beach, Florida.

History Neither Ray Titus nor Mark Johnson knew that a chance pairing as college roommates in the 1980s would lead

to a career-long partnership and the development of the world’s leading embroidery franchise.

Having already established the SIGNARAMA brand, Titus was looking for additional opportunities to expand his franchise company, United Franchise Group. Johnson, having spent time working for SIGNARAMA and also running a successful embroidery business in New York, approached Titus with the idea for EmbroidMe. The pilot store opened in West Palm Beach in 2000 and began franchising a year later. In 2012, EmbroidMe has grown to 300+ locations in 12 countries, with close to 40 locations in Australia – making it the leader in the domestic market.

Snap-on Tools

Snap-on Tools – easing the pressure with private fundingForget the banks and snap up this great opportunity from one of the largest non-food franchises

Snap-on Tools Australia defies traditional lenders by successfully establishing a direct lending program to franchisees.

One of the largest non-food franchise companies in the world, Snap-on Tools has been in the tool manufacturing and distribution business for more than 90 years.

Last year, the Australian successfully introduced a Credit Program with the aim of providing private funding for potential franchisees. Snap-on believes the program represents the beginning of a trend in successful multi-national retail operations competing with traditional lenders in the franchise market. To date more than 15 new franchisees have taken up the offer, representing a third of the business’ yearly franchisee intake.

“We are witnessing a changing economic paradigm in retail, and particularly in franchising internationally,” says Nick Hudson, national franchise manager for Snap-on Tools. “Throughout the world there is pressure on the retail model – from a softening in demand for product, right through to a restriction on lending for people interested in investing in a franchise. We decided to circumvent this, and inject much needed funding into the system ourselves.”

Entry prices in Australia for many household name franchises are extremely high – ranging from $200,000 right through to $1 million – meaning that a potential franchisee naturally looks to a lender to assist them in making the investment. Snap-on Tools Australia

recognised that although its franchise investment is at the lower end of the scale, securing access to funds was a significant barrier to many who genuinely wished to become part of the franchise network.

With an overflow of customers and new territories in need of a franchisee, the Credit Program presented a straightforward solution.

“We have accreditation with the major banks,” explains Hudson. “We are a reputable and solid business turning over $67 million last year in Australia alone. It is fortunate we are in the position to provide finance sourced purely from the Snap-on network. In the majority of cases there is no need for a bank to become involved in a franchisee’s decision.

“Prior to the commencement of the Credit Program, our franchisees have

typically been at the mercy of bank variable interest rates. The Program provides fixed interest rates, no ongoing fees or additional charges to franchisees, and our credit is unsecured except for a line against the assets of the franchise itself,” says Hudson.

Snap-on Tools Australia is the only Australian franchise operation to offer this innovative program for franchisees.

Brian Tracy International

Brian Tracy International – the trusted advisors and trainersHelp companies and individuals achieve their business and personal goals

Brian Tracy International has been operating for over 30 years and is in 18 countries. We provide a one-stop shop

for anyone aiming to build a training or consultancy business. Our Australian business model has three key components — all profit centres — designed to cover any need for a small, medium or large company. Specifically:

1. Eleven world-class, multi-media, interactive workshop programs. These include topics of time management, sales, leadership, professional development and Certificate III and IV nationally recognised qualifications mapped from our content.

2. World-class hiring, performance appraisal, behavioural assessments. These include DISC assessments and 360 degree assessments, all utilised to help companies understand their people. An absolute must for adding value to clients.

3. E-Learning online programs cover-ing the nation’s top 12 programs—all are funded via a traineeship from the federal government, so it’s cost-neutral for employers. Very popular with administra-tion staff who cannot leave the office.

Our licensees are individuals or companies who want easy access to this comprehensive tool box of programs and business tools, where all the hard work of establishing a business has been done. They are therefore free to focus on revenue and profit goals. A website, and over 200 files covering proposals, training agreements, images and assessment tools, along with comprehensive training and support, ensures a sustainable and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Current licensees have varied

backgrounds—they include large organisations like Talent 2 (HR management), senior executives looking for independence and work/life balance, and entrepreneurs wanting a fast start into this lucrative and booming market.

Some licensees enjoy the option of working from home, while others use serviced offices which offer the use of training rooms if needed. Much of the work is completed on the client premises. The internal operational costs are very low, and the profit margins are very high. Products are ordered as needed so there is

no requirement to pre-purchase stock. A two day program with 10 participants, for example, can yield $15,000.

Brian Tracy is recognised as a global authority on the psychology of success. He has authored our seminar training programs along with over 60 books and 300 audio training sets. Brian is an in-demand speaker and has audiences of 250,000 people per year.

The business model is calibrated to the local Australian market and no stone is left unturned in pursuit of our goal: to present the very best components needed for a successful entry into this field.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees

Gloria Jean’s Coffees – a winning blendFranchise partnerships are brewing up a story of success

In October 2006, John Giovas and sister Chris, made the decision to trade in the daily grind of their corporate professions to embark on

a new venture. The pair were aware of the challenges when starting up a business, so found a franchise an appealing option.

Five years later, John and Chris are now brewing up a story of success, as the owners of a thriving Gloria Jean’s Coffees franchise in Gymea, New South Wales and winning awards along the way.

In the first three years John and Chris achieved their five-year plan, exceeding their initial hopes for the business. They attribute much of their success to the close partnership forged with Gloria Jean’s Coffees’ support office.

When asked about his success, John Giovas says, “a franchise provided us with a sound investment; presenting fewer risks and a greater chance of success. We paid meticulous attention to detail to ensure we entered both a profitable and sustainable business”.

Having opened over 1,000 coffee houses worldwide with over 480 of these across Australia, Gloria Jean’s Coffees is a proven and successful franchise system which has been recognised as one of the world’s best.

With a vision to be the most loved and respected coffee company in the world, Gloria Jean’s Coffees focuses on recruiting and rewarding franchise partners such as John and Chris.

When talking about the partnership, Chris Giovas adds, “choosing the right franchise is absolutely essential. My advice to others would be to look for a strong brand such as Gloria Jean’s Coffees, which can also offer ongoing

support – this made our lives so much easier and we felt reassured every step of the way”.

The siblings recently gained recognition for their achievements at the bi-annual Gloria Jean’s Coffees International Glory Awards attended by more than 400 Gloria Jean’s Coffees franchise partners, master franchise partners and store managers from around the world.

The pair received the coveted International Franchise Partner and Store Manager Award which recognises the standard of excellence in store operations, including sales results, customer connection and store presentation.

John and Chris qualified for the award after winning the Gloria Jean’s Coffees Australian Franchise Partner of the Year Award last year. In the same year, the pair were runners-up in the Franchise

Council Business of the Year Award. On their award success Gloria Jean’s

Coffees executive chairman, Nabi Saleh says, “John and Chris proved to be the best of the best in the Gloria Jean’s Coffees family of more than one thousand coffee houses opened worldwide across 39 markets. Their dedication and passion for the brand, their team and their guests make them standout candidates to win this award.”

Oporto

Oporto – takeaway that’s taking offFor a franchise that’s going places you’ve just gotta go Oporto

Bondi Beach, 1986: a time when fluoro was big, hair was bigger and budgie smugglers weren’t just for toddlers and those blokes that

tell you to swim between the flags. It was just metres from the sand of

Australia’s most iconic beach that a man by the name of Antonio ‘Tony’ Cerqueria was opening the doors of the very first Oporto store.

With authentic grilled chicken burgers and secret recipe sauces inspired by the flavours of his Portuguese homeland, Tony’s business quickly gained a loyal following.

Over the next 25 years the Oporto brand would grow from the single beachside store to become one of Australia’s largest and most successful food franchises, serving more than 15 million customers every year.

And it’s not just Australians who are hooked on the authentic, unmistakable flavours of Oporto’s fresh-grilled chicken and sauces. Today Oporto has over 142 stores across Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

Great taste of successOporto’s general manager, Jamie McKaughan, says the business will keep dishing up success.

“Opening an average of 15 stores a year has ensured we’re one of the few brands to have been named among BRW’s ‘Fast Franchises’ every year since 2004.”

This continued growth is something that Jamie puts down to a number of factors.

“Obviously it all starts with our product, and we’re as committed to providing our customers with high

quality, great tasting food today as Antonio was when he started Oporto 25 years ago.

“But we’re also committed to creating a real partnership-style relationship with our franchisees and providing them with a really high level of support across all areas of the business.”

Jamie says they’re always on the lookout for motivated people to join the franchisee team and share in Oporto’s growing success.

“We’re constantly reviewing new site opportunities, and can offer a number of great store formats in exciting locations throughout Australia.”

Oporto has come a long way from the days of its first store on Bondi Beach, but the brand’s always stayed true to its unique Australian culture and proud heritage, serving up authentic, fresh, great tasting food. And with ambitious plans for growth backed by a proven recipe for success, Oporto’s future looks brighter than ever.

Kwik Kopy

Kwik Kopy – your award winning printing partnerOutranking the industry average in all areas of support

The best way to succeed in a franchise is with a franchisor who offers strong support. Ask Steve Strangward, owner

of Kwik Kopy Richmond since 2004 and winner of the Kwik Kopy 2012 Franchise of the Year award.

“Receiving strong support from my franchisor has been so important to my success. I am convinced that prospective franchisees should look closely at a franchisor’s support system before committing to any of the thousands of different franchises for sale,” he says.

“It was a simple equation when I was looking for my first business – the stronger the franchisor support, the less the risk of failure and the greater the likelihood of success.”

Kwik Kopy is an award-winning provider of graphic design, printing and marketing services with over 100 B2B franchises operating throughout Australia. What’s more, you don’t require any previous experience in printing or design to become a Kwik Kopy franchisee.

As a Kwik Kopy franchise owner, you’re talking with business clients who value professionalism and quality as much as economy and who look for long-term business partners. Kwik Kopy’s B2B business model, which includes a strong franchise support system, was just what Steve and his wife Kate were looking for when they were deciding where to invest.

The franchise has a proven franchise track record, strong brand recognition and a system that gives franchises a real lift into a successful business. Once up and running, franchisees are not on their own.

“Being part of the Kwik Kopy system means we benefit from the strength

and support of a really strong national franchise community,” says Steve.

“Kwik Kopy’s focus on franchisee support has helped make it one of the best franchises in Australia and helped us win the 2012 Kwik Kopy Franchise of the Year award.”

Kwik Kopy recently ranked number five in the Top 10 list of franchises in Australia and number four in the area

of support. The survey conducted by topfranchise.com.au (an independent consumer franchise service), reports that Kwik Kopy has a score of 79 out of 100 which is well above the industry standard of 71 (May 2012 survey) when it comes to operations and operational support.

Kwik Kopy offers its franchisees sound business/financial analysis and advice, on the back of extensive performance benchmarking. It also provides substantial marketing to build brand awareness.

Coco Cubano

Coco Cubano – Espresso + Cocoa + Eatery + CocktailsBringing a taste of Cuban passion to Australia

Coco Cubano is a cantina committed to bringing a fresh, positive change

to the Australian café scene, offering a unique dining and drinking experience. It is a concept proving popular with customers, drawing on elements from the vibrant Cuban culture, with an emphasis on inviting people to linger, day and night.

Coco Cubano is the destination for a premium espresso, breakfast, a delicious lunch or dinner, bar snacks, tapas, coverture hot chocolate and inspired cocktails.

Award-winning coffee In April 2012, Coco Cubano was voted ‘NSW’s Favourite Coffee’ in the Lifestyle Food, I LOVE Food Awards - Australia’s biggest people’s choice awards. Over 134,000 members of the public voted, with Coco Cubano beating some of the big names to be crowned state-favourite.

Coco Cubano sources 100 percent quality Arabica coffee beans from the world’s finest plantations in Cuba, Colombia and Brazil, and has created a world-class range of hand-crafted espresso. Every bean comes from Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee plantations - meaning that every cup we serve is good for the planet, as well as your palate!

The revolutionary team Coco Cubano was founded in 2008 by Tony Melhem, current deputy chair of the Franchise Council of Australia

(FCA), and his wife and co-director, Avril Melhem, after a trip to Cuba in 2007, where they were inspired by the Cuban style of cantina.

Tony sums up the Coco Cubano difference: “We have a loyal customer base, and everybody is treated like family. At Coco Cubano, we’re all about the passion.”

Tony and Avril have over 10 years experience in the hospitality industry, including owning and managing three successful Gloria Jeans café

franchises. Coco Cubano also benefits from the strong business experience of co-director, Cameron Kenna.

Cameron has more than 15 years experience creating and running successful companies with both national and international footprints, and in 2006 came in at number 40 in the BRW Fast 100 list.

Coco Cubano currently has two successful sites in Sydney, and plans to open a number of franchises in Sydney and Melbourne in the coming months.

Bringing the Coco Cubano experience to more Australian centres is a key goal for Tony, Avril and Cameron, and the doors are open to franchisees wanting to start up their very own Coco Cubano cantina.

“We’re proud of our proven business model,” says Tony. “We have some exciting AAA grade sites on offer, with multiple store growth opportunities at the moment. We’re looking forward to meeting more of the high calibre franchisees out there.”

GoGetta

GoGetta – Equipment funding made easyRent.Grow.Own. with franchise accreditation

An equipment funding model that began in the hospitality industry and has quickly gained momentum in the

fitness, transport and construction sectors is now available to help Australian franchises grow and expand.

Launched in 2008 by Silver Chef Limited, the GoGetta Rent.Grow.Own.® solution gives franchisees the chance to obtain costly equipment and preserve working capital.

Through the Rent.Grow.Own. funding model, franchisees can focus on meeting the challenges of day to day business knowing they can access the equipment they need, when they need it in an affordable, flexible way.

The Rent.Grow.Own. funding model is a 12 month rental agreement which appeals to business operators looking for a flexible approach to equipment funding. With no long term liabilities and fixed regular payments franchisees can preserve their cash to use for other business needs.

GoGetta has appointed Fiona Priddin as the GoGetta national franchise manager with the objective of accrediting a wide range of franchises to help support growth in the industry.

“We have already accredited a number of franchise groups in the fitness and construction industries and I am currently working with franchisors in the embroidery, printing and home services sectors,” states Fiona.

GoGetta accreditation is much simpler than bank funding, explains Fiona. The franchise only needs five stores, a copy of the disclosure document and some financial information on store performance.

“We use the financial results to determine what the responsible level of pre–approved finance should be for the group.”

Once approved, every franchisee in the system has access to exactly the same level of pre-approved funding.

“We have learned from many franchisors that despite having bank accreditation in place, the goal posts seem to change with each individual applicant. To help make it easier we make sure we can offer every franchisee the same deal and the ability to access genuine, unsecured lending, without having to put their home on the line,” says Fiona.

So why not just go to your bank for funding? It is no secret that banks have made it more difficult for small business owners to access the capital they require. In a typical franchise, where the purchase

price is around $400,000, a bank’s credit criteria may only allow lending of $200,000. If the franchisee has saved up $100,000 of their own cash, they are still short of another $100,000.

GoGetta’s purpose is more about filling the gap, rather than actually competing with the banks. By incorporating the Rent.Grow.Own. solution, as well as franchise accreditation, GoGetta can assist franchisors and franchisees in initiating and expanding their business by providing funding options for their equipment.

SuperGeek

SuperGeek – super fixed, super fast Mobile IT and computer maintenance

When Mick Davey started his company in 2003 on the Gold Coast he had no idea how quickly the

business model would take off. Before long the SuperGeek brand had expanded to Brisbane, the Sunshine coast and Toowoomba. Now the network has spread interstate with franchises in Coffs Harbour, Sydney and Melbourne. Greater expansion into Sydney and Melbourne is in the pipeline for the next 12 months.

What’s the success of SuperGeek? We thought we’d let some of our franchisees tell their story:

Jeremy and Peta Thomson, Springwood and Kuraby “We had planned a move into the IT industry for quite some time and had researched thoroughly all the options available to us. What tipped the scales in SuperGeek’s favour were the great brand-ing and the great systems in place allowing us to work the business from day one.

“Now we know the potential of this business as we won the franchise of the year in 2010.”

Master franchisee Chris Moffatt “Since the day I bought my individual business in Queensland I have been in love with the brand and what it stands for. Subsequently I have bought a second franchise and then found myself responsible for the Queensland region as master franchisee. “I am immensely proud of the fact that I have been part of the SuperGeek team for nearly five years and have helped to build

it to the business it is today. SuperGeek’s business and brand awareness is at an all time high and this is only the beginning. Anyone who comes on board and adopts the ethics and systems of this successful franchise could only be excited by the potential this business model offers.”

Geoffrey McGrath, Stafford “I have been working in the service industry for over 20 years, as a manager of outlets in national companies or managing the store on the corner - but always in the public eye. I have always wanted my own business and to set my own standards of customer service. I attempted to set up my own business but the transition from employee to self-employed was a tough challenge.

“When I looked at the SuperGeek business model, the standards of customer service delivery, market branding and

company structure were aligned to the standards I would aspire to in my own business.

“Where else was I going to find an established branded model, a business in a box? In all my 20 years of being in business I had never seen a system that just works like the SuperGeeks model.

“Ultimately as a franchisee you are responsible for your own business but by following the SuperGeeks’ model I turned over more than $200,000 in my first year!”

The business supports its franchisees

with many new revenue streams. Due to feedback from our business clients, we have added ‘SuperGeek Websites’, ‘SuperGeek Cloud Storage’ and ‘SuperGeek Computer Sales’ that not only offer more options to our clients but allow more opportunity for each franchisee to earn additional revenue.

Baskin-Robbins

Baskin-Robbins – premium ice cream with a new designEnjoy sweet success with a global brand

Baskin-Robbins is the world’s largest chain of ice cream specialty shops, with over 6,755 restaurants globally including

4,200 located outside the U.S. Baskin-Robbins has been creating

innovative, premium ice cream, specialty frozen desserts and beverages for 67 years. This is an exciting time for Baskin-Robbins in Australia – we have big plans for growth and are actively looking to increase the number of restaurant locations nationwide.

As part of one of the world’s largest Quick Service Restaurant companies, Dunkin’ Brands, Baskin-Robbins has a long history and solid backing globally. There has never been a better time to become part of Dunkin’ Brands, which last year posted global sales in excess of $8.4 billion.

Baskin-Robbins continues to provide guests with a fun, light-hearted and exciting experience by incorporating its new international restaurant design into each restaurant. This innovative design is unique to Baskin-Robbins, and reaffirms each restaurant as a welcoming place for delicious celebrations with family and friends, where new flavours and treats are continually discovered.

Baskin-Robbins offers franchise partners the advantage of a turnkey package. This includes your training and franchise fee, meaning we take care of all the planning and building applications and provide you with a brand new, scoop-ready restaurant from day one.

We also offer our franchise partners ongoing training and knowledge-building workshops, as well as marketing and promotional campaigns and materials, to

assist with your ongoing business success. There is nothing more rewarding than

owning your own business, as all of our franchise partners can attest to. Mount Lawley, WA, restaurant owner Martin Lazarus, says “owning my own business allows me the flexibility to spend time with my family, as well as give back to the community.”

We work hard to provide the best value and return on investment for you, and aim to reduce your incoming costs as much as possible. We therefore build to a budget rather than a set fee, making our restaurants the most cost-effective business in the category by a long way.

Coolum restaurant owner, Nick Volk, says being part of an established, worldwide brand is always exciting. “Baskin-Robbins is endlessly innovating and continuing to revolutionise the ice cream business. We’re always working on

the next great flavour, frozen beverage or ice cream treat. Our dedication to providing guests with an unforgettable experience is the key to our success.”

We are looking for people who are passionate, fun, want to take on a new and exciting challenge and are willing to work hard.

Our restaurants currently under construction range from $210,000 to $220,000+ GST – but we’re always happy to discuss individual requirements with you.

Ink on the Run

Ink on the Run – accelerating opportunityAn environmental, cost conscious door-to-door service

Ink on the Run provides a personalised door-to-door service refilling or replacing ink and toner cartridges to both homes and

businesses. It has a strong environmental focus, a complete range of cartridges for all home and office printers, and a money back guarantee for customers whether cartridges are refilled, original or compatible.

Printer consumables is a growing market with nearly every home and office having at least one printer. The need for this business became evident in 2000 with numerous requests by clients for a quality refill service for inks and toners.

A mobile service was provided and within a few short weeks proved to be both profitable and effective, and with the introduction of our refilling techniques we were able to mobilise and run a clean and efficient operation. The concept was so well received there was evidently need for a franchise system.

The franchise system launched in November 2002 and now has franchisees

in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Northern NSW, Sydney, Victoria, South Australia and New Zealand.

What really sets an Ink on the Run franchise apart is not only the broad customer base but the low start up costs, low ongoing costs and lifestyle rewards from a home-based business.

The benefitsOngoing training and support is crucial to the success of any franchise system and

Ink on the Run takes this very seriously. Printers and the consumables are constantly changing so one of the most important elements in such a dynamic market is research and development. The Ink on the Run research and development team continually keeps abreast of the latest changes, and uses the secure online forum to ensure that franchisees are kept up to date with products, technologies and refilling techniques.

Good quality products and costs are negotiated with suppliers, and this, along with ongoing marketing campaigns

promoting the benefits of Ink on the Run’s value proposition, ensures that Ink on the Run franchisees can remain competitive in the market.

A good way to assess franchise oppor-tunities is to look at how many current franchisees renewed their original fran-chise agreement when it expired. “In the last year every one of Ink on the Run’s franchisees up for renewal renewed their contract: the main reasons are that fran-chisees can see the potential of the mobile

franchise and print consumable market. Franchisees have the potential to make greater income and maintain a desirable lifestyle,” says director, Anthony Davis.

Ink on the Run encourages franchisee expansion and sees it as a “win-win” situation for both the franchisee and the franchisor. “Through the expansion and growth of the franchise, Ink on the Run continues to grow in popularity by reaching a bigger market. In turn, as the brand grows franchisees will have the benefit of more work. One of the other benefits is that a more easily recognised franchise system can attract a premium upon sale.”

We currently have an “accelerate” package at no extra cost available in certain key franchise areas which includes a dedicated marketing campaign to get the right franchisee up and running.

TeleChoice

TeleChoice – protecting your investmentBecome part of one of Australia’s strongest retail sectors

Australia boasts more than 1,000 franchised brands incorporating more than 70,000 small businesses and

representing more than 15 percent of the national income. There’s no doubt that franchises are a significant part of the economy. Seventy percent of franchises are food franchises however in hard economic times, Australian consumers reduce their spending on discretionary items like coffee, cakes and takeaway food.

By contrast, telecommunications is a strong and growing sector because people have got to stay in touch. Be it chatting with friends and family on mobiles or social networks, checking the latest news and weather, football scores or your bank balance - all these are must haves today!

If you forget your wallet at home; there’s no problem. But if you forget your

mobile phone at home it’s an issue! You must go back to get it.

The importance of mobile phones in the everyday life of the Australian population is beyond debate. It is also important to remember that the technology is changing all the time. Newer and better phones are being launched every month, the content is getting bigger to support hundreds of thousands of applications that cover banking, internet access, music, cameras, movies, live sport, dieting tips, cooking recipes, even shopping and there’s lots more to come.

Very soon, you’ll be able to go shopping and tap your mobile phone to

pay for everything in an instant - you will not need to carry a wallet!

One way to be part of this exciting industry is to become a franchisee protected by the Franchising Code of Conduct.

At TeleChoice, you get a full franchise with all the benefits and protection of the franchising Code of Conduct. That is why at TeleChoice, we have more satisfied franchisees than anyone in our sector. We have many owners that have renewed into their second and third terms and also many that are multi-unit owners, which is a testament to our reliable, rewarding system.

Setting you up to win“When you become part of the TeleChoice

family, we want to set you up to win. We start with a thorough process to ensure that the TeleChoice opportunity matches your goals and expectations,” says Ehab Abdou, TeleChoice CEO.

“We follow that with four weeks comprehensive training and then continue with ongoing updates, training and follow-ups to ensure our franchisees are knowledgeable in all the latest product releases, pricing changes and technology updates. The continuity of training is supported by our Learning Management System, software that disseminates all new product information and training material

to our franchisees and their staff.”The future of mobile phones is

more promising than most other industry sectors. Take advantage of the opportunity to be a part of it.

Nanotek

Nanotek – the mobile car cleaners driving growth Making ‘Cool Cars’ your business…

If you love cars, you’ll relate to the driving force behind mobile car cleaning franchise, Nanotek.

This Australian franchising sensation launched in Sydney in 2004 and has since taken on the world with operations in over 15 countries. Nanotek’s exclusive nanotechnology in combination with its mobile service delivery model has created an entirely new market segment – car wash delivery!

“Imagine the freedom and lifestyle of having your own mobile business and working from home – being able to clean a car anywhere and offer your clients the highest quality service at their home or office. This is the business reality of a Nanotek franchisee,” says franchisee development manager, Adam Stone.

Going from traditional water washing to liquid polymer nanotechnology is a massive paradigm shift, but the results speak for themselves, and it certainly appears that the big players are listening! Nanotek provides car cleaning services for Qantas Valet and handles product launches for all of Australia’s major car manufacturers including looking after the requirements of Ford, Holden, Hyundai, Suzuki and Mazda at this year’s Australian International Motor Show.

“We get to do some really cool stuff. Every day is different and fun,” says Adam.

Already with a strong presence in both Europe and the Middle East, Nanotek is now targeting other key markets for the introduction of the service, with the next stop being our closest neighbour, New Zealand.

“New Zealand is a great market for us and extremely well suited to our service,”

says Nanotek CEO, Jim Cornish.“Our Aussie franchisees not only have

the benefit of the international head office being in Australia, but also the benefit of our experience from around the world,” says Cornish. “Our global experience and scale enables us to offer our Australian franchisees pricing, technologies, alliances, experience, expertise and systems beyond the reach of purely domestic franchise systems.”

One of the newest franchisees under the Nanotek banner is Ian Franke, based in Camden, NSW. As a former police officer Ian was attracted by the combination of lifestyle and business potential that the Nanotek business model offers.

“I’m my own boss but I have an extensive support system behind me. I

can choose my own hours and work my business around my family,” says Ian.

“I wake up in the morning excited and actually looking forward to the day. I’ve bought a piece of land with my wife and we’re just about to start building a house on it to raise our children. I’m also looking at purchasing a second territory and taking more of a management role in my business.”

Exclusive Nanotek territories are now available throughout Australia.

Worldwide Online Printing

Worldwide Online Printing – your modern day printing partnerA tried and tested system that’s survived tough times

It’s been more than 15 years since Worldwide Online Printing first burst into the print scene, helping to change the way the consumer

purchases print and deals with traditional printers. Printing was once a bit of a mystery to some people, something that happened in a factory somewhere.

Introducing a revolution in the way print was produced with its hub and spoke production model, Worldwide grew from humble beginnings based in Western Australia to a national presence in a rela-tively short space of time.

During that time there have been many changes to the industry, as well as challenges, including the rise of digital print. Rapid advances in the digital sphere have changed the way the consumer purchases print. The growth in awareness by the consumer of environmental issues, the growing need for faster delivery and higher service standards have highlighted the need to stay relevant to customers’ needs and stay competitive.

There have been some tough times for the Worldwide group, including a short period where the company went into voluntary administration resulting in the closure of its NSW production facility in March 2010, as well as the GFC that is still being felt across the country. However Worldwide stayed strong and was purchased back on July 1, 2010 by a small group of individuals who were previously involved when Worldwide first began.

“Despite these difficult times the Worldwide group has remained positive and focused,” says managing director, Rob Dallimore. “We are privileged to work with some of the most positive

owners of any franchise group in the country. There were some dark times sure”, says Rob “but as an organisation we have come through the whole experience far stronger and more determined than ever.”

Rob puts the recent success of Worldwide down to its people, systems and an enthusiasm to embrace change. “The great strength of this group is that as an owner of a Worldwide centre you’re not alone. We are a strong tried and true systems-based organisation and we have a solid network of highly skilled and

motivated owners who support not only each other but the franchisor.”

Today Worldwide is a much leaner and hungrier organisation. Whilst the production side of the business has always been well organised and efficient, with the hub and spoke system, it needed to look at management structure and the way the business ran. “We have been able to take the lessons learned from the past and transform Worldwide into a successful, dynamic and forward thinking company once again,” says Rob. “Worldwide has been about innovation and vision from the beginning and now that we have recaptured that vision, it’s full steam ahead.”

Esquires Coffee Houses

Esquires Coffee Houses – brewing up a stormA high-tech coffee offering with convenience front of mind

Coffee lovers in Australia, hold on to your mugs, you are about to

get hit with a coffee house concept that is ahead of its time. Esquires Coffee Houses has launched with a bang into the Australian market boasting a technologically sophisticated offering and an eye catching premise in Mosman, NSW.

Apart from using trained baristas to brew Esquires own special coffee blends, the coffee house also aims to be a community hub offering consumers unique features such as the use of free iPads, electronic menus, a self serve kiosk and free Wi-Fi.

Esquires will also be able to offer online ordering through their website and mobile ordering on a custom built app. Customers can place their morning coffee order on their phone as they are heading out the door and pick up their freshly made coffee as they walk into store, without having to line up. Providing the highest level of service and exceeding expectations is what Esquires Coffee Houses is all about.

Retail Food Group (the owner of the Australian and New Zealand Esquires Coffee Houses master franchise agreement) has identified a proliferation strategy to open stores in NSW and other states

including QLD and SA. There are plans for multiple formats including a “Drive Thru” model. The first Esquires Drive Thru store is planned to open in Upper Coomera in Queensland and there are at least two more drive thru sites planned in Queensland over the next 12 months. Esquires aim to offer motorists high quality barista coffee and delicious cafe style food options in the convenience of a drive thru experience. The

store will also have seating for customers who want to take a break and come in store, as well as a play area for children

In addition to the inline and drive thru formats, there will also be kiosk, hole in the wall and coffee cart formats, based on location.

Changing the world – one coffee at a timeBeing environmentally friendly is a big part of who we are, and we are constantly looking

for ways to reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprints of our stores through more advanced technology. Every store we open, we will continue to look for ways to do things better whilst staying true to the values of our brand: serving great organic, fair trade coffee and being hi-tech.

With eight to 12 stores due to open by the end of FY2013, this is a pivotal time for new franchisees to come on board. RFG plans to grow the Esquires brand aggressively throughout Australia, and with full training and support, it’s time to exercise your entrepreneurial skills and love of coffee by investing in a rewarding business venture.

In launching the program, business development manager, Borge Prinsloo says “Joining Crazy John’s has enormous benefits - 20 years’ experience in the retail and telco industries; a trusted and credible brand; strong relationships with leading manufacturers; and ever-increasing demand.

“Commercially, the licensed store model is also a wise investment. Unlike a franchise, licensing doesn’t require ongoing marketing fees or royalties, so the profit remains with the licensee.”

Alongside Crazy John’s existing retail footprint, licensed stores will take advantage of high-traffic locations in metropolitan areas as well as outer metropolitan growth corridors.

Utilising the popular retail “kiosk” format, licensees will have access to the latest range of mobile phones, tablets and mobile broadband products in cost-efficient locations.

“Australians are some of the highest smartphone users globally per capita and technology is being developed at a pace never seen before,” states Borge.

“On top of that, we’re now seeing strong demand for social networking, tablets and wireless connectivity. It’s a great time to join Crazy John’s.”

Applicants do require retail

experience, but not necessarily in the telecommunications field.

“We’re looking for enthusiastic and hard-working people who have an interest in telecommunications,” Borge explains.

“We offer comprehensive induction training and on-the-ground support so I encourage interested parties to contact us for a chat.”

The Crazy John’s Licensed Store Program comes at a time of great success for the company, which recently won the Canstar Mobile Phone Retailer Award.

Conducted by independent ranking agency Canstar Blue, the award saw Crazy John’s win the categories of Overall Customer Satisfaction, Value for Money and Clarity

of Advice; demonstrating once again the strength of the Crazy John’s brand and the opportunity for people looking to take on a store of their own.
