A Play about the Public Service

I went with a long-time public servant (35 years to my 20) and we both howled and poked at each other during the funny and sometimes hilarious exchanges between the three main characters ... oh, if only I had the chance to cry out to Canadians and beseech them to take a closer look at what has happened to the public service.

- Winnie Pietrykowski, Public Servant of over 22 years

Young and enthusiastic Madge has been tasked with her first official memo. The only thing standing in her way are endless revisions, an impossible deadline, funding cutbacks and the ev-er-shifting world of government protocol. An unofficial public service motto is: “fearlessly advise and loyally implement,” but what happens when that advice isn’t heard? Inspired by dozens of interviews with public servants, this laugh-out-loud comedy ex-plores the fuzzy divide between personal need and public good.

“A delightful confection of wit and insight.” - (Capital Critic’s Circle, Ottawa)

Our audienceThe Public Servant played to sold out houses at Ottawa’s Great Canadian Theatre Company in June 2015.

- smart, relevant, and expertly imagined. Director and co-writer Jennifer Brewin has welded together two seemingly disparate ideas: The public service and entertainment. And it works. The play juxtaposes the mundanities of the life of the public service with physical comedy in a performance that is funny, ironic, and relevant.

- Capital Critics Circle

We are proud of our audience as they truly reflect the diversity of our city. A typical audience is made up of many ages, occupations, experiences, and languages. They work across the city and bring friends from around the world. They come alone and in groups, by car and by public transport.

The Public Servant attracts career civil servants, politicians, volunteers, democracy buffs, union members, voting advocates, private sector members, real estate agents, lawyers, engineers, architects, and anyone who has ever found themselves within a bureaucracy, working to make a difference. Our audiences are connected by bonds of family, work and community. They live in Rosedale, Danforth, Etobicoke, Regent Park, Flemingdon Park, Parkdale and Thorncliffe.

We bring the play to Toronto in March 2016 in association with Nighwood Theatre, a company dedicated to producing plays by women.

Funny, witty, emotionally touching, on so many levels...it’s just too bad that it’s sold out! Would want to have so many more go experience it.

- Larry Rousseau, National Capital Region REVP
