Vaccinations – Clinics generally establish
a set schedule, recommending the age
and vaccinations needed. If you are in
good communication with your primary
care provider, they will have that information. There is also a
State data bank which allows any physician within the State to
access your schedule if you happen to move.
What you need to get depends upon the products being
used at your physician’s clinic. There are combination vaccines
on the market that contain multiple doses within one injection.
The nurses know exactly what to give for each patient, but you
should always ask your doctor if you have questions.

The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. The DEA has recently changed their
regulations by providing options for
consumers to properly dispose of
controlled substances. They can dispose of
unwanted meds at authorized collection
sites or utilize the mail back program.
Retail pharmacies, hospitals or clinics with an on-site
pharmacy may register with the DEA to be an authorized
collector and/or administer mail back programs. Authorized
collectors voluntarily provide a receptacle for consumers to
dispose of controlled medications.
Authorized mail back programs have for sale prepaid pre-
addressed envelopes in which consumers may mail unwanted
controlled medications. Locations of participating sites can be
obtained from the DEA at www.dea.gov or 800-882-9539.
Healthy Living:

Congratulations, Katrenia
Beane, Radiology Tech, for being
named the SCKMC Exceptional
Service Award winner for the month
of November!
Katrenia was nominated by two
patients for providing excellent care
during MRI exams. She was
recognized for making what is generally considered an
uncomfortable test pleasant, with her patient-centered
attitude. If you would like to nominate someone for next

SCKMC’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve
Perkins, has tendered his resignation, effective
in January 2015, to its Board of Trustees. In his
letter Perkins said, “I have done everything I
can do for SCKMC. I believe the organization
needs a new direction, and I do as well."
The Board of Trustees will act on the
resignation at its upcoming meeting. SCKMC
Board's Executive Committee is already taking steps to affect
a smooth transition in leadership. The position will be posted
very soon for qualified applicants.
"Steve has a passion for this hospital and our community
that will be hard to fill and he will be missed," said Dr. Nick
Rogers, chairman of the South Central Kansas Medical
Center's Board of Directors. "Running a hospital in rural
America is challenging with the many changes dictated by
insurance and government regulations. We were fortunate to
have had him in Ark City and wish him the best."
Perkins expressed his appreciation for the wonderful
members of the Board, management team, staff and doctors
affiliated with the organization.
“We have a tremendously hard-working, dedicated, caring
staff here. Every day, they come in committed to providing
great care and service to our community. It is very difficult to
let go,” Perkins said.

Veterans Hold Flag Ceremony
Members of VFW Post
1254 honored SCKMC with
the gift of a POW-MIA flag.
The flag was presented during
a special ceremony that took
place on Veterans Day.
Despite the frigid
temperatures, the ceremony
was attended by over a dozen
individuals, and included a
speech as well as the official
flag raising.
“We are grateful for all
those who have served our
country as well as those who
are currently protecting our
freedoms,” said Clayton
Pappan, SCKMC Chief
Marketing Officer.
