The very first students enrolled in the degree programs of Bachelor

of Military Sciences and Master of Military Sciences at the 88th

Cadet Course

The main selection criteria to the Cadet Course were:

Leadership skills

Motivation

Academic capabilities

Aptitude to the military education and training

Relevant features and competence have been measured by means

of the certificates from the secondary-level education, conscript

training and military service experience together with the entrance

exam

The entrance exam consisted of a comprehensive aptitude

evaluation and a 12-minute running test

The Student Selection of the 88th Cadet Course

The number of admissions was limited and the acceptance of the

students was based on the score ratings of the entrance exam

The entrance exam consisted of four modules, which were based

on certain military subjects and research methodology

Each of the modules has its own emphasis, which was taken into

account in the final scoring

During the five days long exam the applicants were tested by

means of several literary and equivalent applied tests

The General Staff Officer Course 58 is being primarily intended to

officers from the 87th and 88th Cadet Courses and it is being

enforced 2015 - 2017

The 12-minute running test was not scored in the selection process

of the 88th Cadet Course´s students, nonetheless the academic

achievement and physical endurance have had a clear connection

with each other

Besides, in general the good performance of physical exercises can

both improve self-confidence and contribute to persistence, mental

clarity as well as ability to cope with stress

A Sound Mind in a Sound Body

From self-leadership´s point of view it is interesting that although

the good physical endurance does not play a crucial role in the

scoring of the student selections´ of the Finnish officers, it seems to

have the favorable influences to the success of studies and career

generally

The good physical endurance indicate to be a potential premise to

continue reviewing of theme in order to evaluate quality and

functionality of the selection systems of the basic and postgraduate

degrees of Military Sciences as part of competence and knowledge

management
