PSWTE President’s Letter I once had a conversation with my brother. He was a Desert Storm Navy pilot who had many hours of flight time in the “green zone “in the Middle East theater. I asked him how many individuals were in his squadron, to which he replied, about 500. I expected him to say 16 or 20, if you included his commanding officers. He said to me, “I don’t fly alone. Every screw, every launch, every pound of fuel I burn, depends on my team. If they screw up, I don’t come home.” I thought back to an opportunity that I had to go on a Tiger Cruise with the Navy. As I stood on "vulture's row", I was amazed how every person had a responsibly for preparation, launch and recovery of every aircraft aboard that carrier. Everyone had a part, and without it, potential disaster would be imminent. I bring this up because I am constantly amazed at how many Emmaus alums are not part of a “squadron,” a reunion group. The last talk in the weekend is the 4 th Day talk, and it addresses this so well. And yet, it seems to be so easily overlooked. The reunion groups are collections of Emmaus alums that support each other, teach each other, and encourage each other. Some use the study card that we all were given at the Cross ceremony. Some use this forum for a book study, for a bible study, for Palanca preparations, or for hearing new talks. Some groups are couples; some are just men or women. Some meet separately while others meet in the same house on the same night. Lifelong relationships are made and nurtured in these settings. To many, they are the true life blood of the Emmaus experience and its mission. These groups also become support groups, prayer partners, and “safe havens” in a time of trial. This summer, I challenge each one of you to either join an existing reunion group, or being in one, to reach out and bring someone into yours. These groups support the Emmaus movement by mentoring new core team leaders, mentoring future Lay Directors, and most important, mentoring future spiritual men and women who will be movers and shakers in our world. You might say “gee Scott, you sure put a lot of emphasis on reunion groups!” To that I can say, this IS my family today. This family I break bread with, go to church with, travel with, go to movies, (my wife would say “quilt with”), and so on. PSTWE provides a platform for the ongoing mission of the weekend through reunion groups. Sponsors should take their pilgrims to a reunion group, and new pilgrims should bug their sponsor about where a group might be. My wife and I today are a product of many men and women in our reunion group. Today I have many big brothers, and Anny, big sisters, simply because we asked where a reunion group was eight years ago. Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” He wants to see great things in us and through us. Please accept my challenge this year to seek out and be a part of the small “families” that PSWTE’s mission talks about in the 4 th day experience. Much like my brother’s aircraft, he had a team to put him in the sky and bring him home. Likewise, we need the blessing of family, and what the reunion groups have to offer! PSWTE President’s Letter

I once had a conversation with my brother. He was a Desert Storm Navy pilot who had many hours of

flight time in the “green zone “in the Middle East theater. I asked him how many individuals were in his

squadron, to which he replied, about 500. I expected him to say 16 or 20, if you included his commanding

officers. He said to me, “I don’t fly alone. Every screw, every launch, every pound of fuel I burn, depends

on my team. If they screw up, I don’t come home.” I thought back to an opportunity that I had to go on a

Tiger Cruise with the Navy. As I stood on "vulture's row", I was amazed how every person had a

responsibly for preparation, launch and recovery of every aircraft aboard that carrier. Everyone had a part,

and without it, potential disaster would be imminent.

I bring this up because I am constantly amazed at how many Emmaus alums are not part of a

“squadron,” a reunion group. The last talk in the weekend is the 4th Day talk, and it addresses this so well.

And yet, it seems to be so easily overlooked.

The reunion groups are collections of Emmaus alums that support each other, teach each other, and

encourage each other. Some use the study card that we all were given at the Cross ceremony. Some use

this forum for a book study, for a bible study, for Palanca preparations, or for hearing new talks. Some

groups are couples; some are just men or women. Some meet separately while others meet in the same

house on the same night. Lifelong relationships are made and nurtured in these settings. To many, they are

the true life blood of the Emmaus experience and its mission. These groups also become support groups,

prayer partners, and “safe havens” in a time of trial. This summer, I challenge each one of you to either

join an existing reunion group, or being in one, to reach out and bring someone into yours.

These groups support the Emmaus movement by mentoring new core team leaders, mentoring future

Lay Directors, and most important, mentoring future spiritual men and women who will be movers and

shakers in our world. You might say “gee Scott, you sure put a lot of emphasis on reunion groups!” To that

I can say, this IS my family today. This family I break bread with, go to church with, travel with, go to

movies, (my wife would say “quilt with”), and so on.

PSTWE provides a platform for the ongoing mission of the weekend through reunion groups. Sponsors

should take their pilgrims to a reunion group, and new pilgrims should bug their sponsor about where a

group might be. My wife and I today are a product of many men and women in our reunion group. Today

I have many big brothers, and Anny, big sisters, simply because we asked where a reunion group was eight

years ago.

Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you

and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” He wants to see great things in us and through

us.

Please accept my challenge this year to seek out and be a part of the small “families” that PSWTE’s

mission talks about in the 4th day experience. Much like my brother’s aircraft, he had a team to put him in

the sky and bring him home. Likewise, we need the blessing of family, and what the reunion groups have to

offer!

Many blessings,

Scott Coffinger, President PSWTE

Lay Director Thoughts -Walk #218

It has been a long, challenging and rewarding walk from being asked to be the Lay Director of Walk 212, to creating a team, then having it cancelled before the team meeting, to being asked to be the Lay Director for 218, and getting to this point in the process a second time. I feel very blessed to know God has a plan for these walks and He has the whole process in His hands.

The theme “I Thirst for God” came out of a deep need for Him each and every day in my life. When reading Psalm 42:2 it embodies how every person should feel, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” It is embod-ied in the song “Desert Song” which remind us that he is with us each and every day, and we should be thirsting for Him during those highs and lows.

I am excited for how lives will be changed on this walk and I encourage all of us to be praying for the Pilgrims and the team as preparations are made. I thank you for your prayer and support.

Steve Westerside

Lay Director, PSWTE 218

Lay Director Thoughts -Walk #219

The theme for Walk #219 is “God is With Us”, the song is “Sing” by Josh

Wilson, and the scripture is Philippians 4:6-7. A little over four years ago I

stumbled upon Christian artist Josh Wilson as my husband was undergoing

treatment for leukemia. As I listened to his CD that summer, “Sing” started

speaking to me as a theme song (IF I was ever asked to be a Lay Director). The

theme, God is With Us, comes from the chorus.

The scripture is also one I clung to during that time in my life. “Do not be

anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with

thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which

transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ

Jesus.” Please pray for the pilgrims and team of Walk #219.

Blessings,

Tracy Canfield,

Lay Director WTE #219

Note from the President Emeritus, Carol Decker:

Gift to Puget Sound Walk to Emmaus Community

Last summer Lunelle Flannery (pilgrim on Walk 130, June 2002) passed away. Her nephew told

us that his Aunt had been deeply touched by her Emmaus experience. So much so, that in her

Will she listed the Puget Sound Walk to Emmaus as one of the beneficiaries to her estate. The

final distribution of the estate was completed the end of May, with PSWTE receiving a generous

check. At the June Board meeting, the Board agreed to place these funds into a 90-day CD.

Further discussion for uses will be held at the September Board meeting.

Current Information. Please remember to keep your E-mail address,

home address, and phone numbers updated with PSWTE. Often Lay Direc-

tors contact the Board for help in filling their teams, especially for clergy and

song team members. Anytime you change your contact information, please

send the Historian an email to update the database.

A Note from the upcoming Walks’ Love Team Chairs:

The Love Team Chairs for the upcoming walks are Jeanne Harshbarger (men's) and John Hart (women's). If you are unable to serve on the Walks themselves and would like to serve, the Love Team Chairs would like to invite you to join them on a love team. We know that sometimes it is hard to commit to a whole weekend to serve on a walk; serving on a love team is a great way to give support to the pilgrims when time is at a premium. "An hour or an evening, we can use the help.” If you would like to help, please let us know as soon as possible so we can contact you to arrange times that you can help. Contact Jeanne Harshbarger at [email protected] or John Hart at [email protected]
