What’s Happening Around Town?JABA Recruiting Volunteers for Kids & Elderly

For those receiving long-term care services, an advocate to fight for their rights and listen to their concerns can make a huge difference in that person’s life. Right now, JABA (Jefferson Area Board for Aging) is on a recruiting drive to find some very special people willing to do this important work. Any help you can provide getting the world out would be most appreciated!

A Volunteer Ombudsman visits a fa-cility weekly to provide a listening ear with regards to any concerns, to moni-tor conditions and to help residents or their family members resolve problems that they are unable to handle alone. Support for this role is provided by JABA staff.

Volunteer Ombudsmen are required to dedicate a minimum of four hours per week for one year. Participating in the 20-hour training program, shadow-ing a current volunteer and an assess-ment precedes appointment to a facility.

JABA’s Volunteer Services depart-ment is now accepting Volunteer Reg-istration forms and setting up inter-views for candidates interested in the upcoming September 1- 3rd training. Please contact Leanne Probst at (434) 817-5272 to find out more information.

In addition, JABA is recruiting vol-unteers for FISH (Friends in School Helping).

“Sometimes it’s a volunteer that can do it better than anyone in the build-ing.” - Erin Kershner, Principal Venable Elementary School

If you want to make a real difference in the lives of children in our school systems, becoming a FISH [Friends in School Helping] volunteer tutor, even for just one hour a week, can make a world of difference to a child. JABA is in desperate need volunteers now! Any-thing you can do to get the word out would be most appreciated.

Virginia is for Lovers of Music Festivals

Across Virginia, every style of music is represented with a variety of music festivals and music lovers have plenty of options to choose from.

Lovers of Bluegrass and classic Country music can attend festivals like the Richmond Folk Festival or the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention, the largest and oldest in the world. These festivals offer travelers an opportuni-ty to experience authentic toe-tappin’, porch-stompin’ music right here in the Commonwealth. And fans of more modern music can attend events like Lockn’ and Bristol Rhythm and Roots to see the big names they know and love.

“We have so many great music fes-tivals in our own backyard from the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival to FloydFest to the Richmond Jazz Festi-val,” says Virginia Tourism President and CEO Rita McClenny. “Virginia is so rich in music history, but it also attracts mainstream artists. There’s something for every type of music fan here.”

New Partnership Between BGF and COHH to Design a School

Center of Hope (Haiti), Inc. (COHH) announced today that it is partnering with Charlottesville-based non-prof-it Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) to design an elementary school in Hinche, Haiti. With BGF’s collaborative support, COHH is planning to design and construct a new school to educate up to 150 children in grades 1-9. COHH is rapidly outgrowing the alternative space it currently uses for its school.

The students at COHH are from some of the most vulnerable families in Haiti and would not otherwise be able to attend school. “We have outgrown the current space for our school,” says Julie Atkinson, COHH Executive Direc-tor, “and we are working hard to raise the funds to build our new facility. With BGF’s design expertise, I know that we will have a superb facility that will serve our children for many years to come.” Guided by BGF, COHH has already begun preliminary design work for the project, with the hope of beginning construction as funds become available and completing the new school by the beginning of the 2016 school year.

The project budget for the new school is $500,000 and COHH has al-

The nonprofit is working to raise the matching funds, and more than $90,000 has been raised to date. “This is a case where all hands are needed and all donations, regardless of amount, can have a double impact on the future of our children,” said James Lipscomb, the COHH Advisory Board Chair. “Our partnership with Building Goodness Foundation will assure quality of design and we hope to provide a sustainable school facility.”

Crozet Artisan Depot OpensThe Crozet Artisan Depot opened

its doors in the historic train depot lo-cated on Three Notch’d Road in Crozet on July 1st. The Crozet Artisan Depot was founded by seven local artists with a broad range of artistic talents. Their proposal for the use of the train depot as a local gallery was approved earlier this month by the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. Later in July the Crozet Artisan Depot will be sharing its location with the new Albemarle Tourism and Adventure Center.

The seven artists are led by Kathleen Mistry, a local artist living in Crozet. She views the Crozet Artisan Depot as a community place where local artists and creative people will assemble. The proposal approved by the Board of Supervisors was based on the mission that the Crozet Artisan Depot would be “a venue to showcase and promote local artisans”, “provide a platform for” artists to sell their work and estab-lish a “connected creative community”.

The Crozet Artisan Depot will be an anchor location and collaboration with the Artisan Center of Virginia and an area hub for the Artisan Trail Net-work of Virginia. It plans to participate in Second Saturday, a monthly series of gallery openings in Crozet. It also plans to stage special events featuring regional activities.

Memory Quilt Presentation to City Council

The Memory Quilt made by Clark Elementary third graders and the Cres-cent Hall Quilters was presented to City Council at the beginning of the Council meeting on July 6, 2015.

The Memory Quilt project paired third graders from Clark Elementary School with facilitators from the Cres-cent Hall Quilters, a group of women who live in or near Crescent Halls and are known for their hand-sewn and imaginative quilts. Together, they cre-ated a memory quilt that celebrates the cultural heritage of the Belmont and Ridge Street neighborhoods.

In March, third graders met with the quilters during class time to learn

about the quilting process and talk about ideas of neighborhood and community. Each student then drew an image to illustrate what their own neighborhood and community meant to them on a block of fabric cloth.

Throughout the month of April, the Crescent Hall Quilters hand em-broidered these illustrations and then worked with the students to lay out the overall quilt design. Over the month of May, the Crescent Hall Quilters hand-stitched the quilt blocks together to create the final product.

The final Memory Quilt was re-vealed in a celebration with the stu-dents on May 26. This summer, a pub-lication will be released to document how the Crescent Hall quilters make their work.

Play the City is a community effort to build relationships and understand-ing through art. We celebrate all the things that make our neighborhoods unique through championing the vi-brancy that resides in us all, through cookouts, talent shows, exhibitions, workshops, and community projects that bring us together. CAAR 2015 Second Quar-ter Report posts significant gains in homes sales up 12% over Q2-2014, with 959 closed sales for the

quarter; Area Median Days on Market is at a nine year low at 33 days; Sellers received 95.8% of original list price at sale, highest level since 2007.Charlottesville Area 2nd Quarter 2015 Highlights:• Closed sales in the Greater

Charlottesville area up significantly 12.0% versus last year, with the 959 closed sales, marking the highest quar-terly tally since 2007.

• Median sales price for the region in-creased 2.1% from Q2-2014, rising from $276,500 to $282,220.

• Half of the homes sold in the 2nd Quarter were on the market 33 days or less, the lowest median days-on-mar-ket since 2006.

• Sellers received an average 95.8% of original list price, up from 95.1% last year and the highest level since 2007.

• Active inventory is now 11.5% lower than last year, while purchase activity is high and new listings coming online are stable to 2014 levels.

Sales ActivityAfter an uneven start to 2015 where

sales were virtually flat in the 1st Quar-

ter, the Greater Charlottesville market picked up considerable steam during the spring season as closed sales rose 9.7% in May and spiked 27.1% in June versus last year. All told, the 959 closed sales in the 2nd Quarter exceeded last year’s tally by more than 100 units (+12.0%), representing the most sales for any quar-ter since 2007. Sales activity picked up 94.5% compared to the 493 sales in Q1, exceeding the ten-year average Q1 to Q2 sales gain of 77.1%. “The pace of sales con-tinued to accelerate in the second quarter, posting double-digit percent increases in both units sold and total dollar volume. These indicators confirm the strength of our local market and the continued rise in second quarter pending sales bodes well for the second half of the year,” said CAAR President, Anita Dunbar.

The acceleration resulted in an 8.9% spike in total dollar volume to $495.4M. The $325.6M in sales volume in the 2nd Quarter topped the 2014 mark by $40.8M, an increase of 14.3%. Further, at mid-year, despite the flat sales growth of Q1, the year-to-date sales total is now 10.3% higher than the same period last year, due to the strong performance of the second quarter. Inventory of Homes for Sale

The 1,114 new pending sales over the course of the 2nd Quarter represented a

4.9% increase over Q2-2014. Notably, within the quarter, 406 new pending sales in April 2015 marked the high-est monthly tally since May 2006 and a 4.9% year-over-year increase. Though May’s tally lagged last year’s total by 4.5%, contract activity picked up again in June, climbing 7.5% and boding well for settlement activity heading into the 3rd Quarter. At quarter’s end, there were 889 total listings pending sale, 16.7 percent higher than at the same point last year.

Though contracts and sales posted significant gains, the 1,578 new listings added in the 2nd Quarter were essen-tially flat, leaving inventory headed into the 3rd Quarter down by 11.5% compared to last year. Using the average monthly sales pace over the last twelve months, the 2,058 active listings repre-sent 9.4 months of supply. “While the region remains a buyer’s market in the 9 month range, the absorbption of in-ventory from 10.8 months of supply one year ago is a welcome trend for sellers,” said CAAR President-Elect, Donna Patton. “This is the first time in eight years where supply at mid-year has dipped below 10 months.”

Days on Market (DOM) and Pricing

Homes sold in the 2nd Quarter re-ceived contracts faster than any quarter since 2006. Half of the closed sales were on market for 33 days or fewer, a week better than the 40-day median DOM in Q2-2014. Two of every five homes sold during the quarter (42.1%) were on market less than three weeks. The 51 homes in the $500k-$600k price

range sold fastest, with a median DOM of only 11 days. With a median DOM of 16 days, townhomes sold faster than detached homes (35 days) and condos (60 days).

Median DOM levels improved in four of six jurisdictions, led by a de-crease of more than 90 days in Greene, where half the homes sold in 44 days or fewer. Leading the blistering speed of sales going under contract is the city of Charlottesville, which had a median DOM of 15 days and Albemarle at 26 days. Louisa was the fourth area to post an improvement, with median DOM

falling by a full month to 42 days. Half of Fluvanna’s Q2 sales were on mar-ket 68 days or longer, marking a 16-day increase from the 52-day median DOM last year. Like last year, Nelson homes took longest to sell, with a me-dian DOM of 261 days, meaning the majority of Nelson’s Q2 sales were on market for over eight months prior to contract.

It’s possible to have an amazing summer vacation within close proximity to home. Central Virginia’s six surrounding counties, and the City of Charlottesville, offer plenty of bargains, awesome attractions and

family-friendly fun. MMGY Global’s 2015 Portrait of American Travelers report, reveals that Americans are “staycationing” close to home as an alternative to traveling greater distanc-es for family getaways. So fuel up the car, load up the family and explore the beauty and wonder of Central Virginia.

Nelson County Wintergreen Resort

Nestled on 11,000 acres on the east-ern slopes of the Blue Ridge Moun-tains, Wintergreen Resort is surround-ed by “lush forests, cascading streams and winding trails.” You can expect to find a variety of activities ranging from golf, tennis, ice-skating, winter skiing and spa services. However, for those seeking a memorable summer family getaway, Wintergreen has a variety of activities planned weekly. Families can enjoy diverse activities such as candy bingo, workshops, outdoor movies un-der the stars on the big screen, camp-

fires, storytelling, and s’mores. If you join the Nature Foundation

at Wintergreen, you can take a fami-ly-oriented scenic trek with one of the naturalist volunteer leaders for their “Morning in the Mountains” hike. The 30 mile trail covers a range of ter-rain from rugged steep slopes to short beautiful strolls.

Shamokin Spring Nature Preserve and Ravens Roost Park mountain tri-

als are two favorites among family trav-elers, according to the Nature Founda-tion. But the most scenic mountainous view is located at the end of the Plunge Trial. After enjoying a morning hiking excursion, the entire family can head over to The Edge for lunch. This fam-ily friendly establishment promises a spectacular view during your dining experience, and if you’re lucky you might catch a live performance.

Fluvanna County Pleasant Grove

Fluvanna County is located be-tween two major metropolitan areas – Richmond, the state capital, and Charlottesville, home of the Univer-sity of Virginia. This predominantly rural county flows along the southern boundary of the James River. With the bountiful open spaces of the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills, outdoor en-thusiasts can enjoy an assortment of leisure quests. For example, hunting and fishing are good in this region of Virginia, and water-related activities on rivers, streams and fresh-water lakes can be enjoyed by the entire family. Pleasant Grove, a 960-acre tract along the Rivanna River, provides many rec-reational and historical attractions. Furthermore, the Heritage Trail Foun-dation provides an array of trails that stretches from downtown Palmyra to beyond the town’s new high school. Sandy Beach Trail, one of Fluvanna’s most beloved trails, starts at the East-ern Trailhead, near the dog park on Rt. 53. It’s completely accessible by wheel chair and an easy walk for small chil-dren. The gentle downward slope of the winding trial passes through fields and woods before opening to a shallow portion of the Rivanna River. The en-

tire family will enjoy splashing in the slow-moving waters. Bring a picnic lunch, because your family can enjoy it in the new picnic shelter at the top of the small hill.

Louisa County Lake Anna State Park

Located less than an hour from Richmond, Charlottesville and Fred-ericksburg, Louisa County offers its visitors an opportunity to experience the beauty of rural life away from the hustle and bustle of big city living. This county’s diverse rural charm is popu-lar among weekend travelers and day trippers. There’s something for every-one, whether you enjoy outdoor excur-sions, learning about history or enjoy shopping and delicious food – Louisa County is sure to provide your family with an exhilarating and memorable experience.

There is plenty to do in Louisa Coun-ty. For example, Lake Anna State Park has more than 13 miles of hiking trails, a guarded swimming beach, a children’s play area, a food concession stand, a bathhouse, a children’s and handi-capped fishing pond, and much more.

Small Country Campground is an-other family recreation that includes a new championship mini-golf course, a giant bouncing pillow, giant lake toys, and fire truck rides. While camping at this family oriented campground, you’ll be close to local vineyards, flea markets, historic attractions, all while enjoying a modern camping getaway. There are many places to choose for dining – whether you have the taste for Italian at Il Castello Italian Restau-rant or Mexican cuisine at Los Tres Po-

trillos – your choices are both diverse and abundant. As you can see, there is plenty to do and experience in Louisa County, and it makes an ideal one day family getaway.

Orange County Historical Museums

Orange County is slowly moving into the 21st century with a thriving food and wine scene. Located in the north-central Piedmont region, visitors can expect to see stunning landscapes and a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Orange County is located 20 minutes north of Charlottesville, and 1.5 hours west of Richmond. Its

close proximity makes a great central Virginia destination for day trippers. For those historical buffs, Orange has three museums that you can explore: The Harley Davidson Museum at Waugh Enterprises, the Civil War Mu-seum at the Exchange Hotel, and the James Madison Museum, which hap-pens to be the first museum to fully commemorate the fourth U.S. Presi-dent and “Father of the Constitution.”

The Percherons of Montpelier Wag-on Rides is something the entire fami-ly can enjoy. The wagon departs from the visitor’s center every half hour, and transport passengers from Chick-

en Mountain, down DuPont Circle, up Farm Road, and finally down West Gage Road for a view of the Montpelier Mansion. Adults can expect to pay $10 while the cost for children is $5.

The Arts Center in Orange offers drawing, painting, clay, stained glass, basketry and other arts and craft class-es for both children and adults. With its large gallery shop, it’s the perfect educational experience that the entire family can enjoy.

After taking in the scenery in Or-ange County, your family can enjoy pizza at Antonio’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, southern style cuisine at Country Cookin, or Chinese food at the Great Wall Chinese Restaurant. The decision is yours and the options are endless.

Madison County Skyline Drive Tour

Madison Chamber of Commerce Executive Director and Tourism Co-ordinator, Tracey Gardener, said in a recent article that visitors to Madison learn what residents already know—that Madison is a great place to be. And with its booming tourism recognition, it makes the perfect day vacation spot, too.

The Skyline Drive is a popular sce-nic driving tour that draws more than two million people annually. The 105-mile road runs the entire length of Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While gazing out at the view, you are bound to run across wild turkey, deer, black bear and other wildlife. The scenic Skyine Drive also produces beautiful vegetation such

as cardinal flowers, black-eyed susans, and colorful goldenrods. When travel-ing along Skyline Drive pay particular attention to the milepost because they will help navigate you through the park. Because the speed limit is 35 mph it will take approximately three hours to travel the entire length of the park.

There are many family attractions that are bound to get your kids excited. For instance, the garden maze at Luray Caverns, Black Home on the Farm pig races, and Hess Corn Maze are favor-ites with visitors. The opportunity for

exploration, adventure and education is extensive, and it’s filled with plenty of activities for the entire family. Mad-ison provides an assortment of restau-rants and cafes. If you’ve got a taste for some comfort food, Pig-N-Steak offers barbecue ribs, steak and hamburgers and they are also known for their fa-mous “Mountaineer Platter.”

Greene County Historical Society and Museum

Greene County is one of the final stops before the Shenandoah Nation-al Park, the Appalachian Trial and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Like much of Virginia, Greene County possesses a rich history that’s full of wonder that the entire family can experience.

The Greene County Historical Soci-ety and Museum has an 110,000-name genealogy database that allows visitors to learn about descendants of Greene County. This learning experience helps children research their own lineage and perhaps discover that they too have family ties to the County. In addition, your family can enjoy the Society’s col-lections and artifacts that illustrate the 8,000 years of pre-history and current history of the County.

Greene County also has a history walking trail for those interested in learning more about the history of Stanardsville. You can expect to see such landmarks as the Old Toll House, built in 1815 by John Sorrille, and con-sidered the oldest house still standing. After exploring the history and culture of Greene County, your family should have worked up a hardy appetite by now. Greene County has many restau-rant options to choose from, includ-ing Fabios and Vinny’s for wonderful Italian food or Mi Casa and El Agave

for Mexican cuisine. If you want to go where the locals gather, you can choose from Blue Ridge Café, Olive’s Grill and Rylie’s Diner. Lord Hardwicke’s, whose original location is in Charlottesville, has another restaurant adjacent to the Best Western.

Albemarle County Scottsville

Scottsville is located just 20 minutes south of Charlottesville. It has many organic farms, bed and breakfast ac-commodations, day hikes, and local wineries and brewers. If you want to see the town’s history come to life, start your day trip at the Scottsville Muse-um. There the entire family can watch a video and learn the history behind why the James River is shaped like a “horse shoe bend.” During the visit, you’ll hear stories of floods that plagued the town for centuries, and view artifacts and replicas used during the Civil War. Currently on display is the “Scottsville in the Civil War” exhibit. The exhibit provides an educational assessment of how the war affected Scottsville fami-lies and residents during this time. For example, your family will learn about medical items used to tend wounds at the Scottsville Confederate hospital;

how widows wore symbols of mourn-ing; view a display illustrating the lives of African-Americans after the war, and much more.

If you’re still up for more explo-ration and adventure, the Scottsville Community Farmers’ Market is the perfect venue. It features locally organ-ic grown produce and handmade items all produced on nearby farms. There’s also Teddy Roosevelt’s presidential re-treat, called Pine Knot – a small hunt-ing cabin, located between Scottsville and Charlottesville. This is one of

Scottsville’s hidden gems and can only be viewed by appointment.

At this point, your entire family should be famished, which is why you should head over to the historic down-town where you’ll find a handful of lo-cally own restaurants to choose from. The kids can enjoy burgers and pizza, while you indulge in one of the chef’s special entrees. Most of the restaurants serve beer and wine and, if you have time, you can walk up the street to learn how the local beer is made.

City of Charlottesville Historic Downtown Mall

Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall stretches along seven blocks of brick and tree lined streets. This historic dis-trict has a thriving theater, music and cinema scene, and attracts visitors from around the world. With more than 120 shops and 30 restaurants—many with outdoor cafes—it is impossible to visit Charlottesville without exploring one of the most beautiful pedestrian malls in the nation.

Carter Mountain Orchard has been a Charlottesville tradition since 1912. Located next to Michie Tavern and min-utes from Monticello, it’s the perfect family summer vacation. Although the fun starts in the spring with their annu-al Easter Egg Hunt, during the summer you can pick your own peaches and ap-ples. You can even find nectarines, white-fleshed peaches, and fresh local veggies. The kids will enjoy eating ice cream and donuts as an added incentive.

Your family can also visit the Virgin-ia Discovery Museum, which is an ed-ucational oasis. The Museum features two exhibit spaces: the Back Gallery ex-hibit, and the Museum’s Front Gallery. The galleries are filled with interactive exhibits about art, history and science. And, your kids are guaranteed to light up when they see the historic Carousel that features six painted aluminum horses.

As you can see, the surrounding counties in Central Virginia offer fam-ily travelers many choices for excite-ment, adventure and education. If you want to “staycation” close to home, then load up your family and hit the highway before the kids return to school. Virginia is not only just for lov-ers, but it’s a great vacation destination for the entire family. n

Summer gatherings are the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. They should not be stressful on your spirit, or painful on your wallet. You should look for recipes that re-quire little prep work, ac-tivities that are fun and entertaining, and beverages

that are suitable for both children and adults. For example, you can whip up a large batch of seasonal appetizers, such as guacamole, cold soup or a yo-gurt-based vegetable dip. If you want to make a style statement, you could host a theme summer soiree like Christmas in July. Regardless of the theme, here are some summer ideas that are sure to be a hit at any summer gathering.

Make Ice Shot GlassesIt’s all in the details, and if you want

to be the talk of the town, then making these frozen shot glasses just might do the trick. Although the prep time takes only 20 minutes, expect around 2 hours before serving the first round. You’ll want to serve these immediately upon removing them from the molds because they don’t stay frozen long. These can be made non- alcoholic by using Gato-rade, guava, and cranberry juices.

Delicious SorbetsSorbets and frozen desserts are

quick, easy treats for summer gather-ings. Sorbets can be made in a blend-er and require only a few ingredients: fruit, ice and a sweetener. There are many refreshing recipes to choose from in your quest to beat the heat and cool down during the summer. How does the easy peasy blueberry, coconut banana twist, and sweet and spicy man-go sounds? You can visit www.healthy- happylife.com for these and other des-

ert and recipe ideas.

Water Balloon Piñatas While the adults are indulging in

“spirits,” the kids need some way of keeping cool. Because every home doesn’t have a swimming pool for cool-ing off, why not make a water balloon piñata to keep the kids, and adults who are young at heart, entertained. All you

need is a packet of balloons, a piece of strong rope, a stick or bat, a water hose, and somewhere to string up the piñata – such as a clothesline or between two trees. Kidspot.com.au suggests that you prepare lots of water balloons so that you can continue reloading the piñata, as more balloons get popped. Finally, make sure that everyone stands clear until it’s their turn to take a swing at the piñata.

Serve Balled Fruit in Ice Cream Cones

It might sound strange dressing up fruit in an ice cream cone. But,accord-ing to bakersroyale.com, “this is not a recipe, but merely a presentation idea,” which is one good reason you might want to give this idea a try. Not only will you impress the adults with your clever creativity, you also could be-come a big hit with the kids as well. For instance, if you’ve had a hard time getting your kids to eat their fruit, this “balled fruit in an ice cream cone” just might be the incentive they need. You could promise them a scoop or two of their favorite ice cream after they’ve eaten the fruit. The jury is still out whether or not this idea will fly, but it’s definitely worth a try.

Giant Bubble Station It’s just not summer without bub-

bles. If you want to mesmerize and en-gage the little ones while the adults are mingling, keeping them occupied with a bubble station can be music to your ears. In fact, even the older kids (and some adults) will spend hours making giant bubbles. There are lots of recipes for making homemade bubbles, but if you want to make giant bubbles that don’t easily pop, then visit www.chem-istry.about.com to get the recipe and learn the key to blowing giant bubbles that won’t easily pop.

With these cool summer entertain-ment hacks, you’ll never have to worry about throwing a boring summer par-ty ever again. n
