Christmas in July
We will be helping out the Seamen’s Church again this year by partnering with other Episcopal Churches. Over the next few months, we will be collecting items for Christmas boxes which will be given to river workers who are forced to work lonely jobs away from home at Christmastime.
This will help us ‘get a jump’ on the season by starting out early.
We will start collecting items on a scheduled basis, (see below). (Items will be listed on the church calendar as a reminder as well). Seamen’s Church will be assembling over 7,000 boxes this Christmas, so every contribution is appreciated. Below is the July Schedule.
July 3 Lip Balm (unscented & colorless)
July 10 Hand Lotion (unscented, hypoallergenic in 2-4 oz. tubes)
July 17 Sealed Packages of Holiday Sweets July 24 Puzzle Books (Word Search, Sudoku, Crosswords etc.)
July 31 Playing Cards
The items for August will be: Facial Tissues, Microwave Popcorn, Chew-ing Gum & Handmade Christmas Cards. (These items will be listed on the August calendar).
There are boxes available in Mills Hall for your contributions.
Also, if you are a knitter and would like to help out by making scarves and hats etc. We have a pattern here at the church or you can look it up online at : http://www.seamenschurch.org/486.asp
Thank You!

NAMI Support Group—Thursday, July 7th
NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The meetings serve as
a support group for those who have friends and/or family who are suf-
fering from mental illness. The meetings are held here at St. Mary’s on
the 1st Thursday of the month from 6 pm—7:30 pm. If you have any
questions you may contact Tom Mills @ 821-3670.
Hospital Stays & Nicknames (PLEASE READ)
Attention parishioners (and / or relatives) of St. Mary’s that go by names other than your legal, given name. Upon admission to the hospital, when asked for your name, please relay to them not only your legal name but also your nickname, so that when we (at the office) call the hospital we can find out where you are, your status, etc.. This is very important, especially in emer-gency situations when time is of the essence. Your cooperation would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
CPC Mile of Pennies
St. Mary’s Churchwomen participate in the CPC Mile of
Pennies. Have you noticed the jar of pennies on the cre-
denza in Mills Hall? CPC stands for Church Periodical Club. It first
sent the Word west in 1888 on Wells Fargo Stagecoaches. It is an af-
filiation of the Episcopal Church and provides free educational materi-
als such as prayer books, textbooks, Bibles, or periodicals—in print or
audio visual form. CPC allocates funds worldwide through grants.
The CPC Miles of Pennies Fund is for children from pre-school to
Grade 12. In addition to the materials listed above, the Mile of Pen-
nies also gives grants for the shipping costs of recycled children’s
books. We collect pennies at our meetings and welcome your contri-
butions of pennies for this outreach.
Thank you—Gertrude Whitmer,
ECW President
Children’s & Youth Sunday School
Just to make you aware...the Children’s & Youth Sunday
School classes have been dismissed for the summer.
Classes will resume in the fall. Coffee Hour will continue.
Discount Prescription Cards
We have received some discount prescription cards from a Christian organization called, “Jesus Little Helpers”. Anyone can use these: if you have insurance, if you don’t, if you are on Medicare and are in the donut hole etc..
Savings examples: With Insurance With Card Kim in Henderson KY has Chromes Disease $ 400 $40 Peggy in KY Blood Pressure Medicine $ 69 $17 Lady taking Cancer Pill $ 245 $74 Judge Cooper KY - Z-Pac $ 39 $ 6
Directions: This is very simple...if you have insurance, let the pharmacy run that card first and then hand them this discount card and ask them to run it and just use the one that saves you the most money. Also if you did not receive a discount on a certain medication one month, keep the card and try it again the next time you have it refilled as the list of ac-cepted medications is constantly updated. You are welcome to take ex-tra cards for family & friends that could use them. We have plenty and can order more if needed. ….. Just sharing the blessings…..
Discretionary Fund Offerings
Sun., July 3rd
The loose offerings the first Sunday of each month are set aside for the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. These funds have been used to help area residents who are in need with rent, utilities, and medical expenses and we have seen an increase in these requests due to the dip in the economy.
There is also a discretionary fund for the deacon, (Rev. Tom Mills), to use for the same purpose. You can contribute to this as you feel led.
Vestry Meeting Change
There will be no Vestry meeting this month. The next meeting will be
Wed. Aug. 10th at 6 pm. Also starting in August—there will not be a
Eucharist prior to the meetings.
If you have any questions, concerns, ideas or suggestions, please
submit these in writing to Rev. Candyce or one of the Vestry mem-
bers, prior to the meeting. Contact info. is on the front cover.

St. Mary’s Day Celebration Date Set
The date of Sun., Aug. 14th has been set for our annual St. Mary’s
Day Celebration with Cake Auction & Ice-Cream Social so save the
date now on your calendars. This year funds raised this day will be
designated to an upcoming mission trip to Tuscaloosa and repairing the metal
work (chalice, candle holders etc.) for the altar. More details in next month’s
Red Door & the weekly bulletin.
Coffee Hour Hosts
A new sign-up sheet is available in Mills Hall for the months of July
& August for those of you who wish to bring refreshments (muffins,
pastries, breads etc.) for our weekly coffee hour on Sundays after service.
Mid-Year Prayer List Clean-up…
On August 1st, we will start off our prayer list with a clean slate, purging
all names from the list and starting over. The reason for this is because
our prayer list becomes quite extensive over the year with names of folks
that we do not know their condition or circumstance. Have they recov-
ered? Have they passed on? So we need your help….
Look over the list below and if you see someone who needs to re-
main on the list, simply fill out a Prayer Request card by Aug. 1st.

Volunteers Needed
We are needing more current contact lists of those who would like to help
with food for receptions (wedding & funeral), and / or prepare or take
meals to those recovering after a hospital stay. This ministry is so impor-
tant. By supporting parishioners at these times, it helps everyone stay
connected by showing Christ’s love in our actions and deeds.
There will be two sign-up sheets in Mills Hall; one for receptions and one
to support those recovering. You are welcome to sign up on both if you
like. Thanks for your support!

The Fringe Benefits of Failure by J. K. Rowling (Author of the Harry Potter books)
Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes
failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if
you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure,
a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic
scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and
I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in
modern Britain without being homeless. The fears my parents had
had for me, and that I had had for myself, had come to pass, and by
every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.
Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun.
That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there
was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of
fairy tale resolution. I had no idea how far the tunnel extended, and
for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a
reality.
So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because fail-
ure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending
to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to
direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to
me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have
found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I
truly belonged.
I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realized,
and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I
had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became
the solid foundation on which I rebuilt
my life.
You might never fail on the scale I did,
but some failure in life is inevitable. It is
impossible to live without failing at
something, unless you live so cautiously
that you might as well not have lived at
all--in which case, you fail by default.
