Charities ask for help in tackling drought in East Africa

A group of UK charities have started a joint fund‐raising appeal to help more than 10 million people hit by drought in the Horn of Africa. Thousands of families with little or no food and water have trekked for days from Somalia to a refugee camp in eastern Kenya. The camp is now the size of a small city like Leicester, but people are still going there. The UN has called it a "humanitarian emergency".

Lenny Henry who will be presenting the appeal

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal will be shown on the BBC,  presented by comedian Lenny Henry. The DEC said more than 1,300 people a day, mostly children, were arriving in the Dadaab camp. There are now 350,000 people living there.  "Slowly but surely, these people have seen their lives fall apart ‐ crops, livestock and now their homes have been taken by the drought," the DEC said. "We have a duty to help quickly before the situation spirals out of control."

The Red Stallion puts Mr Cleary under the:

Spotlight

Red Stallion: Hello Mr Cleary. Are you enjoying being Head of Year 7?

Mr Cleary: Yes. Mr Wright must have done all of the hard work, because it has been easy for me.

Red Stallion: If you were in a burning building, what one item would you save?

Mr Cleary: An old copy of the book “The Little Prince” written by a French writer who crashed his plane in WW2.

Mr Cleary: I would give some to friends. Then I would buy a nice big house with a moat and a jet-ski faster than Mr Davis’s.

Mr Cleary: Play footie, go to Costa Coffee and try not to over-work.

 3

Mr Cleary: I did want to be a policeman, but my parents told me otherwise. I also like teaching kids.

Red Stallion: If you won £1 million on the lottery, what would you spend it on?

Red Stallion: What do you do during the summer holidays?

Red Stallion: Have you always wanted to be a teacher?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Jack Sparrow goes on a thrilling adventure to the Fountain of Youth, but the most frightening pirate of them all, Blackbeard, is determined to get there too!

This film is very exciting, with a lot of action and a healthy dose of well placed humour. Not only is the acting good, but the action choreography is amazing as well.

The roles of the characters are perfectly portrayed by the actors playing them. The CGI is so real, (especially of the mermaids) you are sure to be on the edge of you seat, almost in the movie. But if you want to feel like you’re really a part of all the action, see it in 3D.Definitely worth watching!

FIFA 12 is an interactive football game where you can play online, head-to-head against your mates or even people all around the world!

FIFA 12 comes out in October. It is a terrific game because you can make your own virtual pro (your own player). You can pick the team he plays for and what position he is in. Also, there is a new feature called ‘Ultimate Team’ where you can create your own team and buy professional players like Wayne Rooney. You can also play tournaments against people around the world.

Overall, we think this game is amazing and super fun!

Andy Murray is a professional tennis player. He is currently number

four in the world rankings and British Number One.  But what’s his

background? Here’s some information about the tennis champion…

Murray was eight years old when the former scout leader Thomas

Hamilton burst into Dunblane primary school and opened fire

with a collection of handguns. Sixteen children and a teacher were

killed before Hamilton shot himself. Murray and his elder brother

were on their way to the school gymnasium and survived by

hiding under a desk in the Headmaster's office.

Andy Murray was approached by Rangers  Football Club when he

was 13 (in 2000). He turned down their offer to sign him despite

his grandfather having played professionally for Hibernians.

Murray won the Queens tennis tournament this year, which

boosted his Wimbledon hopes.

Murray progressed into the semi‐finals of Wimbledon this year,

but sadly lost to Raphael Nadal.
