THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE By: Lizz Stoke

ABRAHAM LINCOLN CRISIS LITTLE BIRD AND BIG BIRD This statue was a gift from Mary Bishop I though this piece was interesting because it consisted of two strange looking birds. They have their toenails painted and I like how their marble eyes reflect rainbows.

I think this piece relates to evolution. I think the bark legs and wings on the little bird are a trait picked up over millions of years of evolution. The bark like legs could be a form of camouflage.

I think the theme of the piece is survival of the fittest. The little bird looks better able to survive. The big bird is also covered in read spots which could predict its likely hood to be killed. More spots means the big bird is an easier target.

STANDING RAM I like animals and this ram looked really cute. That is why I looked at it. I also love the detail in the horns and fur.

This ram could relate to evolution this ram has all the traits of the strongest of his kind. He is able to survive the harsh environments of his mountainous homes.

The artist is trying to display top of the line evolution. The ram has a dark underside to keep him warn in the winter, hooves for climbing rocky terrains, and strong horns for protection.

I could have my students identify traits that could help the ram survive in the wild. I could ask them what type of environment could have caused those traits to develop.

DAVE BY MATT EVALD JONSON I enjoy interesting art. What’s more interesting that a giant robot? It also reminds me of my favorite childhood movie, Iron Giant.

This statue can be related to Ecology. The robot represents humanities effect on nature. The robot is rusted and that shows the damage humans have done to the earth through industrialization.

The sculpture represents the struggle between human industrialization and nature. The plants at the base of the statue are growing up and represent nature trying to reclaim the robot and take back the earth.

I would teach my students the importance of recycling through this statue. The statue was made from reclaimed steel so I would have my students make their own art from recycled materials.

THE ODD TREE SCULPTURE There was no name plate for this statue but I thought it looked really interesting. I almost thought it was a real tree when I first looked.

I think that this tree statue can be related to Ecology. It shows the tree preparing for fall. The leaves have started changing color so the tree can continue to photosynthesize for as long as possible.

I think the theme of this piece is the beauty of nature. The leave on this tree have begun to change color and the glass leave reflect colored light down onto the grass bellow. It is quite breathtaking in person.

I would have my students learn about plant pigments. I would have them collect different types of leaves and examine the different pigments.

MEETING THE HOLSTEINSBY: D DELAP I thought this picture looked really pretty. I also really like sheep, and I thought the ones in this picture looked super cute.

I think this photo represents Zoology. It show lambs in a natural environment. They are on a farm and this picture seems to be taken by an observer.

I think the theme of this picture is sheep. They are in a natural setting and I think the artists wanted to show how seep would live if they lived out in the wild. They have all the grass they could want and a little stream they can drink from.

I would have my students try to imagine other domesticated animals out in the wild and describe how they would live.

BEACH ROCKS OF TIME AND TIDEBY: ALLEN JONES I thought this picture displayed some really interesting rocks. I love the detail that was put into this sketch. I also loved that this was drawn in black and white. It really brings out all the little details.

I think this sketch represent Geology because of all the different types of rocks. I like how the rocks appear to be smooth from years of tumbling in the ocean. This sketch helps to showcase erosion.

I think the theme the artist was trying to convey was the beauty of erosion. The water flowing around the rocks almost look like little fishes and the water has so much depth. The sketch depicts many different looking rocks which helps to illuminate the randomness of erosion.

I would have my students collect rocks and we’d put them in a tumbler and predict how the rocks would look when them came out.
