Thoughts for EasterTide

The Resurrection of our Lord is notonly a personal triumph for Him. It isalso the mystery on which our Catholicfaith rests. Christ proved by theholiness of His life and doctrine, by Hismiracles and prophecies that He wassent by God to teach men divine truth.But all these proofs were to stand or fallon the truth that He would rise againfrom the dead. “If Christ has notrisen,” St. Paul says, “vain is your faith,for you are still in your sins . . . we areof all men the most to be pitied.”

But Christ has risen, our sins havebeen forgiven, and we are of all men themost to be envied. During this seasonlet us appreciate the great gift of ourCatholic faith. By baptism our sinfulman was crucified and died with Christand we have risen to a new life in Him.“If you have risen with Christ,” St. Paultells us, “seek the things that are above,where Christ is seated at the right handof God. Mind the things that are above,not the things that are on earth. Foryou have died and your life is hiddenwith Christ in God. When Christ, yourlife, shall appear, then you too willappear with Him in glory.” Let us askfor the grace to follow St. Paul’s words,so that we may obtain their promise.

Low Week certainly made for high spirits,with the series of splendid Spring days, andgrounds and garden bright with Easter colors. Wewere all happy to have our students back, and tooffer again the beautiful school Masses with theirinspiring singing at 11:20. Faithful from throughout the worldgratefully follow these Masses on the internet, cheered anduplifted to be united with us at the altar.

This past Wednesday Fr. Cekada tested the first graders forFirst Holy Communion, and I gave them a little talk andpreparation for First Confession. The same program wasrepeated on Saturday for our Catechism students. We lookforward to their First Holy Communion in June.

Truly joyful are these days of Spring with birds andblossoms, and little ones yearning to receive Our dear Lord. TheMasses of these days especially “rejoice our youth.” Try ityourself, and come some time just out of joyful love, and receiveJesus in Holy Communion.

This Wednesday would be an excellent day for an extraMass. St. Joseph’s Solemnity falls this week, and reminds us ofjust how wonderful a saint is Our Lord’s foster father, theprotector of the Catholic Church. Katie was telling us on HolyThursday of how he is always helping her find things in thesacristy. So I asked her to pray to St. Joseph for a perfect GoodFriday. She did and it was! Pray to him for your needs, too.

Our deacon returns to France on Monday the 26th to makehis final preparations for ordination on June 27. The ReverendMr. Hecquard has made many friends here, and we will misshim, even as we accompany him to the altar with our prayers.You are invited to a little reception in his honor after the 11:20Solemn Mass of St. Joseph this Wednesday.

Have you noticed the beautiful Agony in the Garden shrineoutdoors? Eldon planted purple tulips which are in bloom as Iwrite this, and a Russian olive tree has arrived to complete thisloving memorial to †Anne McMahon, the First SorrowfulMystery. I have my eye on a few more garden statues, should anyof you wish to donate the first or second Glorious Mystery.

Today Fr. Cekada catches his flight for Florida, and Fr.McGuire is with us for extra confessions. Be sure to do yourEaster Duty in a timely way, and pray for those who haveneglected it. Pray good St. Joseph for all of our needs at thischurch, and for the whole Holy Catholic Church. The Novenabegins Tuesday.

THE GENTLE SAINT

As for gentle St.Joseph, he has a placein the affections of allCatholics. Theylearned to love him inthe first Bible storiesheard at their mother’sknee; in their schooldays, when they

learned his hymns, and “honored’ himone special day during his month, byplacing a plant before his statue, andwearing his badge throughout theday; and when, school days over, theygo out into the world, he is still theircherished and favorite protector, as hewas the faithful guardian of theBlessed Mother and Child. He ishonored in his month– the month ofMarch – and on his especial feast-day,this Wednesday, his solemnity asPatron and Protector of the CatholicChurch. Every Wednesday in the yearis consecrated to St. Joseph, and hisclients practice especial devotions ishis honor on that day. Come to Mass on Wednesday for St.Joseph!

Devout clients of the foster-father ofOur Saviour welcome each year thereturn of the month set asideespecially to honor him, as well as hisfeast in Paschal Tide. There is nodevotion so widespread or so popularas that to the gentle saint whom allrevere, and the world over devoutCatholics unite to show their fealtyand affection for one so particularlyblessed. As he was close to the Heartof the Saviour in this life, so is heclose to the hearts of those who followthat Heart, no matter how haltinglyand weakly; and it is safe to assumethat in the realms of eternal happinessSt. Joseph is still the chosen one ofJesus and Mary. A Great Secret for Preserving Peace of Heart

A great secret for preserving peaceof heart is to do nothing with over-eagerness, but to act always calmly,without disquiet. We are not asked todo much, but to do well. At the LastDay God will not examine whether wehave performed a multitude of works,but whether we have sanctified oursouls in doing them. Now the means ofsanctifying ourselves is to do everythingfor God and to do perfectly whateverwe have to do. the works that have astheir motive vanity or selfishness makeis neither better nor happier, and weshall receive no reward for them.

Happiness, as it can exist herebelow, consists in peace, in the joy of agod conscience. Our conscience will bejoyous and peaceful if it know notremorse; it will not know remorse if weare careful not to offend God. to flyfrom sin is, therefore, the chief sourceof happiness on earth. If our conscienceis pure, our life will be happy. there arenone happier than saints, for there arenone more innocent.

Let us do good; let us avoid evil,and we shall be happy. “There is butone way,” said a man of genius, “ofbeing happy, and it is to do well allone's duties.

Act of Consecration to St. Joseph

O Blessed Joseph, faithfulguardian of my Redeemer, JesusChrist, protector of thy chaste spouse,the Virgin Mother of God, I choosethee this day to be my special patronand advocate, and I firmly resolve tohonor thee all the days of my life.Therefore I humbly beseech thee toreceive me as thy client, to instructme in every doubt, to comfort me inevery affliction, to obtain for me andfor all the knowledge and love of theHeart of Jesus, and finally to defendand protect me at the hour of mydeath. Amen.

Peace

When our Divine Lord sent Hisdisciples out to preach, one of Hisinstructions was: “Into whatsoeverhouse you enter, first say: “Peace be tothis house.” Peace is a good word. It ismore than a salutation; falling fromthe Master’s lips, it is a divinebenediction as well. Peace, too, is afruit of grace, which includes all thatis sweetest and divine in Christianculture. Christ’s peace is a blessingwhich comes out of struggle anddiscipline. Well, therefore, does thesalutation “Peace!” befit a Catholichome, which ought to be the abode ofpeace.

✠ READ AND REFLECTThis offering is from the final

column (March 24) of a conservativecommentator, Paul Craig Roberts, andoffers much food for thought:

“There was a time when the penwas mightier than the sword. That wasa time when people believed in truthand regarded truth as an independentpower and not as an auxiliary forgovernment, class, race, ideological,personal, or financial interest.

“Today Americans are ruled bypropaganda. Americans have littleregard for truth, little access to it, andlittle ability to recognize it. Truth is anunwelcome entity. It is disturbing. It isoff-limits. Those who speak it run therisk of being branded “anti-American,”“anti-Semite,” or “conspiracy theorist.”

“Truth is an inconvenience forgovernment and for the interestgroups whose campaign contributionscontrol government. Truth is aninconvenience for prosecutors whowant convictions, not the discovery ofinnocence or guilt.

“Truth is inconvenient forideologues.

“Today many whose goal once wasthe discovery of truth are now paidhandsomely to hide it. ‘Free marketeconomists’ are paid to sell offshoringto the American people. High-productivity, high value-addedAmerican jobs are denigrated as dirty,old industrial jobs. Relics from longago, we are best shed of them.

“Their place has been taken by the‘New Economy,’ a mythical economythat allegedly consists of high-techwhite collar jobs in which Americansinnovate and finance activities thatoccur offshore. All Americans need inorder to participate in this ‘neweconomy’ are finance degrees from IvyLeague universities, and then they willwork on Wall Street at million dollarjobs....

“Wherever one looks, truth has fallento money. Wherever money isinsufficient to bury the truth,

ignorance, propaganda, and shortmemories finish the job....

“Americans have bought into thegovernment’s claims that securityrequires the suspension of civilliberties and accountable government.Astonishingly, Americans, or most ofthem, believe that civil liberties, suchas habeas corpus and due process,protect ‘terrorists,’ and not themselves.Many also believe that theConstitution is a tired old documentthat prevents government fromexercising the kind of police statepowers necessary to keep Americanssafe and free.

“Most Americans are unlikely tohear from anyone who would tell themany different.

“I was associate editor andcolumnist for the Wall Street Journal. Iwas Business Week’s first outsidecolumnist, a position I held for 15years. I was columnist for a decade forScripps Howard News Service, carriedin 300 newspapers. I was a columnistfor The Washington Times and fornewspapers in France and Italy and fora magazine in Germany. I was acontributor to The New York Timesand a regular feature in The Los AngelesTimes.

“Today I cannot publish in, orappear on, the American ‘mainstreammedia.’

“For the last six years I have beenbanned from the ‘mainstream media’...

“The militarism of the U.S. andIsraeli states, and Wall Street andcorporate greed, will now run theircourse. As the pen is censored and itsmight extinguished, I am signing off.”

I am especially struck by the words;“Wherever money is insufficient to burythe truth, ignorance, propaganda, andshort memories finish the job.

A parishioner recently commentedfavorably on the Sunday Bulletin, withits wealth of readings and prayers, butmentioned he did miss the occasional“clippings” or current eventscommentaries we used to reprint.

Today I offer two reprints from theWanderer for your consideration. Thefirst is an interesting quotation fromCardinal Manning on the mediaattacks against the Church:

Henry Edward Cardinal Manningcommented in his The True Story ofthe Vatican Council (Burns & Oates,1877) about “the tendency of adominant party of men to destroy allthe ancient Christian institutions, thelife of which consists in a supernaturalprinciple, and to erect upon theirruins and with their remains a neworder, founded on natural reasonalone.

“This tendency springs from twoerrors – the one that society, as such,has no duties towards God, religionbeing an affair of the individualconscience only, the other that thehuman reason is sufficient to itself,and that a supernatural order, bywhich man is elevated to a higherknowledge and destiny, either doesnot exist, or is at least beyond thecognizance and care of civil society.From these principles follows, bydirect consequence, the exclusion ofthe Church and of Revelation fromthe sphere of civil society and ofscience; and, further, out of thiswithdrawal of civil society and ofscience from the authority ofRevelation spring the Naturalism,Rationalism, Pantheism, Socialism,Communism of the times.

“From these speculative errorsflows in practice the modernrevolutionary Liberalism, whichconsists in the assertion of theprimacy of the State over the spiritualjurisdiction of the Church, overeducation, marriage, consecratedproperty, and the temporal power ofthe head of the Church.”
