1. Piloting LSP (2005-2010)
Specialist language course: Italian Reading Skills for Art Historians
non-accredited
19 week-long
focused on developing reading and translation skills
2 levels
2. Integrating LSP in the BA in History of Art (2010 – present)
Year 1: Since 2010 all 1st year undergraduate students in the department of History of Art have the option to take a foreign language as an LFA 20-credit degree module
Year 2 or 3: Students are offered the chance to apply to take a further LFA language course as a 20-credit degree elective

LSP course: Italian for Art Historians Ab initio Specialist language module for Art Historians
19 week-long
Optional module
Accredited (20 credits): Oral (40%) and Written Exam (60%)
focused on developing all four language skills
The language module choice of the majority (57-85%)
50-57% of the cohort have previously studied a different language (GCSE or A-level)
Mixed group levels:
Ab-initio students and students with basic knowledge of Italian from independent study or family connections
International students and first-time language learners
Undergraduate and Postgraduate students (from 2015-2016 PhD in Italian Renaissance Art)

To enable Italian ab-initio students to develop language skills particularlyrelevant to the needs of Art Historians
To study material in Italian related specifically to History of Art
To learn to talk and write about works of art in Italian
To make the most of future field trips to Italy
Career focus:
a) Students might not be strong language learners but have an interest in History of Art
b) Year Abroad in Italy and Employabilty skills: Erasmus+ exchange (at the University of Bologna, Italy. Erasmus+ requirement for the placement is generally B1-2 CEFR)

Collaborative approach between Art Historians and language tutor
Bespoke programme and material: 1. Crossover points with the existing BA programme2. Authentic material related to History of Art
Realistic targets:1. The proficiency level in a foreign language needed by an AH2. The achievable level that HoA students can reach in a year

Mixed group: range of interests in different aspects of Italian society
Majority of students are not familiar with Italian art and heritage
