THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Sirach emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s parents. He explains that spiritual riches will come to those who are kind to their mother and father. Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul advises us to treat each other with kindness and mercy and to forgive as God forgives us. His words remind families to always love and respect one another and let Christ’s peace reign in their hearts and in their homes. Gospel: Luke 2:41-52 When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. Jesus did not return with the company. Instead, he stayed in Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers while amazing them with his understanding and questions. When found by his concerned parents, Jesus reminded them that he must be in the house of his Father. Returning together, Mary kept these things in her heart.

From the desk of Fr. Ginel The Feast of Christmas is one of those feasts whose celebration extends beyond, as a result of the Incarnation of the Eternal Son of God. Today’s Feast of the Holy Family is one such example. When listening to the reading from Sirach, we can appreciate his emphasis on the fourth Commandment, which God gave to Moses. Such behavior towards one’s parents carries with it the result of God’s blessings. It is the only Commandment which does so: “Honor your father and mother that you may have long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you.” Viewing Jesus’ conduct in the Gospel today, we can see his response to his mother’s concern for his safety, as well as his causing her and his foster father, Joseph, sorrow. Now that he was considered fit to discuss with other adults the word of God, he had “to be in his Father’s house”. Nevertheless, returning with them, he submitted to their authority. The son of God, Jesus, with the fullness of his identity realized, places himself under human authority! Can we do less? Would we frown to place ourselves under the authority of God, He who placed Himself under ours unto death? In St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians his teaching on kindness, mercy and forgiveness in our relationships is at the heart of Christ’s gospel message of love. Our treatment of each other is clearly expressed by the child Jesus’ response to his earthly family. It sets before us an ideal example for us to emulate, lives which reflect love and action. It will be the basis of Jesus own life and the result in the outpouring of his love and peace in our own hearts and homes. As the New Year approaches, May the love and peace of God our Father and the Lord, Jesus Christ, and the presence of the Holy Spirit be in our hearts and homes.

On behalf of Fr. Charlie Szivos, Fr. Emmanuel Anyansi, and myself, Fr. Ginel, we extend to all a blessed New Year!
