OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Once again, during this month of January, we come uponan anniversary that we would rather not observe. OnJanuary 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of our UnitedStates handed us a decision which is now infamous.

Roe v. Wade struck down all state laws banning abortion, making it legal at any stage of pregnancy, for any reasonwhatsoever, and for no reason at all.

We grieve for those unborn babies lost in the last 43years, and for those who today remain threatened. We achefor their mothers, for decisions they may have made at a timewhen they felt helpless and overwhelmed. We pray for theirhealing and we offer them help. That’s why, year after year,we mark this day as a time of prayer, as a day of fasting, as aday of penance for violations to the dignity of the humanperson. We stand together with commitment and courage, and above all else, we stand with hope.

The word “ordinary” is not always a desirableadjective. Who would not be insulted to receive a notethanking us for our “ordinary birthday gift” or the “ordinaryhospitality at the dinner party?” No car dealer seats acustomer at the steering wheel and whispers, “Look howordinary this is!” Yet, here we are in the Ordinary Time ofthe Church Year. The word carries a different meaning here:it does not mean these days are dull, boring, uninteresting. It means ordinal or numbered Sundays, a season of the yearwhen we follow the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in anordered way, with each Sunday assigned an ordinal number. You can amaze your friends with this example of Catholicarithmetic: the “Ordinary Sundays” begin with the lastSunday of Christmas (the Lord’s Baptism), continue until theSunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster offeasts following Pentecost Sunday. The numbers arecalculated by counting backwards from the Solemnity ofChrist the King (the 34th Sunday). Now you know there isnothing “ordinary” about Ordinary Time.

MARRIAGES AND VALIDATIONS If you have been married bya justice of the peace or a minister other than a Catholic priest, please consider having your marriage validated. This processis not always complicated and would allow you to once againreceive the sacraments. Couples are requested to have thefollowing documents: updated baptismal certificate andmarriage certificate. If there is an annulment required, you’dalso need a copy of the divorce decree. Speak with Father formore information.

GOT AN IPOD? Our new sound system hasan iPod docking port. If you happen to havegotten a new iPod for Christmas and don’tknow what to do with your old one, why notconsider giving it to the parish for use in thechurch? Speak with Father if you can help.

KNIGHTS AT THE ALTAR FOR FUNERALS Each year, our parishcelebrates more than 50 funerals per year, about one eachweek. It is not always possible for the altar servers from theregional school to be released from classroom instruction. So,we are seeking the assistance of women and men from theparish who may be home during the day and could be trainedas servers and sacristans for funeral Masses. Father has moreinformation. Speak with him if you are interested in helping.

You can observe this day by fasting, praying the rosary or chaplet for the unborn, praying for those who have beenwounded by abortion, visiting the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel and becoming involved with respect life organization in the county.

FIRST RECONCILIATION Next Saturday morning and afternoon, the youngsters of our parish religious educationprogram and the regional Catholic school will be confessing their sins to the priest for the first time. Since this isa big step, we ask for your prayers for them and their parents. We congratulate them, their families, teachers andcatechists and offer thanks to Mr. Donald Ruzzi, Mr. Thomas Hamilton and all who assist them with their religiouseducation.

2015 DONATIONS TO THE PARISH If you’d like a contribution statement mailed to you, we’d be happy to do so. Simply make a noteon the front of your weekly envelope when you drop it in the offertory basket or call (947-1873) or e-mail Linda ([email protected])and it will be mailed or emailed to you, whichever you prefer. Our ability to provide this service is just one of the reasons for you togift-wrap your donation in a church envelope or use ParishPay each week. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generous supportto our parish all throughout the year.

THE CHRISTMAS OFFERING It is not lack of gratitude (for we are more deeply grateful that we can tell you) thatmakes us seem tardy in thanking you for your generosity in the Christmas offering which amounted to $51,657.50.We were only waiting for most of it to come in so that we could tell you how wonderful it was. Many parishionersare away for the holidays and make their contributions in the weeks that follow and some are still catching up.There is no way to thank you adequately. Your amazing generosity is such an encouragement to all of us. Weunderstand the sacrifices you make to contribute so liberally. Thank you again.

GROCERY STORE SHOPPING CARDS Each weekend at the school and in the narthex, and any weekday at the parish office, groceryshopping cards for ShopRite and Stop ‘n’ Shop are made available to parishioners. This is a great fund raiser for the parish. Whenyou buy a card at face value, St. Gregory receives 5% back. Of the many who come to church, only a small amount are sold. Wouldn’tit be great if everyone bought cards for their weekly shopping? In a parish of 2,900 families, only 36 purchase them each week. Fatheruses them for all rectory purchases. Thank you for supporting this important effort.

BURNING OF PALM BRANCHES Where do the ashes which begin the Season of Lent come from? They come fromthe palm branches that were blessed and distributed during Holy Week. Because they are a “sacramental”, they mustbe disposed of in a proper way. There is a basket in the narthex and you may leave your palm branches there, andwe will burn them on Tuesday, February 9 in anticipation of Ash Wednesday. Please do not leave palm in baggiesor with rubber bands. These will be discarded and not burned for the ashes.

REMEMBER ST. GREGORY BARBARIGO IN YOUR WILL With a bequest to your parish, you can help assure that we will continue as avital center of sacramental life to the community. To remember your parish, you need only incorporate these words into your Will:“I do give and bequeath to the Church of St. Gregory Barbarigo, in accordance with the discipline and government of the Roman Catholic Church,a corporation sole, the sum of $(include stated amount) to be used for general purposes.” Thank you for supporting us.

FIFTH ANNUAL FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS CAMPAIGN: A CATHOLIC RESPONSE Cardinal Dolan is calling on every Catholicinstitution in the archdiocese during the last week of January. Unfortunately, the high demand for emergency foodcontinues this year. We need to recognize and praise the generous and dedicated work that our parish is alreadydoing. Without these efforts, our current crisis would be much worse. This initiative cannot resolve the problem, for it is impossible to make up all the reductions in resources. However, the fact that we cannot do everything is

not an excuse to do nothing. There is a special box in the narthex and your food may be left there. This program is also being heldsimultaneously in all of our regional schools. Mr. Ruzzi will coordinate with the religious education children. Thank you so muchfor your participation in this very worthy effort.

Departure from Washington back home will be at 6:00 PM. Adults $30 andstudents $15. For reservations, call 634-6885 or 735-4379 or visit www.rocklandrtl.org. Donations to sponsor a walker are gratefullyaccepted. The Eternal Word Television Network will provide life coverage of the March for Life from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. WatchVerizon FiOS channel 285 and Cablevision channel 135.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? Out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament and courtesy to the priests, ministers andworshipers, please refrain from using cell phones and pagers in the church building. Be sure to turn off the audiblefeatures of these devices when in our church. We don’t want you to miss any important calls, but unanswered pagersand cell phones are becoming a more frequent distraction during Mass.

BATHROOM BREAKS If you have to go, you have to go! But ideally, the worst time to go to the bathroom while you are at churchis during the readings and homily, while Jesus himself is reading and preaching (Catechism, #1077-1112) and during the EucharisticPrayer and consecration (when you are at the foot of the cross at Calvary.) Please avoid leaving Jesus when he speaks or when youare at the foot of Calvary. If you have to go, you have to go. But could you wait for a more appropriate time?

ALL ARE INCLUDED We love to see babies and young children brought to Mass on Sundays and weekdays by theirparents, grandparents and relatives. We want everyone to feel welcome here. And, it is obvious for the commongood of the assembly that has come to pray, proper care of little children is needed. For example, veteran parentssay that proper care means that you bring books, sometimes toys or whatever will keep young children peacefuland quiet while Mass is going on. And proper care means that you are ready and able to carry babies to the backof the church when they get really restless or start to make a lot of noise. And, if older ones reach a point wherethey need to roam around the vestibule or go outdoors, we think God understands that the adults who get up andgo out to watch them are doing the best they can under the circumstances. Being a parent isn’t easy. God blessyou!
